Abstract:

Our research is based on data triangulation methodology by which we are going to answer the question with a combination of two elements: the design and development in combination with life cycle perspective according to ISO 14001:2015 and organization consider the life cycle perspective when they design and develop their products, in a modified form introducing many new aspects of life-cycle thinking. This Master’sthesis aims to discuss the Sustainability approach through the use of Environmental Management Standards (EMS), the results achieved by organizations that implement and certify those EMS, and a special focus on the current process of ISO 14001:2015 revision and the logic behind it. Revisiting the concept of Sustainability, the status of the International Organization for Standardization 14001, requirements that related to that life cycle perspective in ISO 14001:2015, eco-design, circular economy and its expected outcomes are discussed. The ISO 14001:2015 revision will have major impacts on the more than 300,000 worldwide certified organizations and on the many professionals that work with it. Analysis of the development of a sustainability portfolio within a globally-operating manufacturing company, we came different illustrate the kinds of life cycle work involved in dealing with activities and interests, connecting activities and interests into action-nets, performing life cycle practices, and spreading the life cycle idea. Finally, we discuss implications of life cycle work for research in the field of organization and management studies and questions related to the topic with quality engineers within the organization.

Abstract:
<p>This thesis is mainly directed towards readers with a basic background in Environmental or Quality Management Systems. More increasingly organisations and companies decide to work with Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and the ISO standard has ever been increasing in popularity. The advantages of the ISO standard are the flexibility it offers, the adaptability to a variety of organisations and processes.</p><p>Most literature on EMS focuses on communication but very few address the issues regarding implementation and translation of the EMS into something functional for the core activities of an organisation.</p><p>In this qualitative study the author focuses on studying the differences between organisational levels regarding working with and implementing EMS at their various levels. The theoretical frame for the study is that of new-institutionalism. Within this frame is gathered empirical data from interviews with representatives of eight larger companies or organisations, all with multiple organisational levels. Combined these interviews form a solid foundation for the study if intra- and interorganisational EMS-implementations.</p><p>The conclusion of this research indicates the participating companies translated and implemented the EMS by standardising already existing routines and methods into complementing the EMS. A side-effect of this study which lies outside the actual aim of this thesis is that companies which have built up their EMS starting at ground-level have a better implementation and communication of such EMS.</p><br><p>Det här arbetet fokuserar på<strong> </strong>läsare med en bakgrund inom miljö- och kvalitetsledningssystem.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine and identify critical factors as well as solutions to overcome these. The results will then be used to create a framework for small businessesto use when implementing the environmental management system ISO 14001:2015. Method – To reach the purpose of this study, a literature review has been conducted in order to establish a theoretical framework. The purpose of the theoretical frameworks was to identify critical factors when implementing ISO 14001:2015. A case study has also been conducted on a manufacturing company in order to collect empirical data. The methods used in the case study were interviews, surveys and observations. The empirical data and the theoretical framework were later compared and analysed to answer the study’s purpose and research questions. Findings – In the theoretical framework and the case study, five critical factors were identified: knowledge and competence, involvement of employees, resources, identifying environmental goals and the company’s environmental impact and corporate culture. The commitment of the senior management was also identified as a critical factor, but was strongly related to knowledge and competence, and therefore it was included in that critical factor. To overcome the critical factors, solutions to each critical factor was identified. With all the solutions identified, it was concluded that all the critical factors are strongly related. Furthermore, the solutions to overcome the critical factors were similar, where training and education of employees was a key solution to overcome the critical factors. Implications – The study can be used as a framework and provide help for small business that want to implement ISO 14001:2015. The study has identified critical factors in the implementation and how to overcome these, regardless of the area that companies work within and can therefore be used by different types of companies. Limitations – Because of the restrictions in the society following the COVID-19 pandemic, the amount of observations and interviews that should have been conducted was limited and therefore the credibility of the study was affected in a negative way. More observations and interviews would have given a more credibly result.

Abstract:
For standardized environmental management systems (EMS) to be environmentally effective tools, they should affect important environmental aspects related to flows of materials and energy, which for manufacturing companies are closely connected to their products. This paper presents how external environmental auditors interpret and apply important product-related requirements of ISO 14001 at manufacturing companies in Sweden. The results indicate that the link between EMS and products is rather weak. Products are seldom regarded as significant environmental aspects and are therefore not within the main scope of many EMS, which are mainly focused on sites. However, all of the interviewed auditors require that some kind of environmental considerations be incorporated into product development, but these considerations are to large extent site oriented; how they are prioritized in relation to other factors such as economics and other customer priorities appears to be up to the companies. The paper includes some recommendations to strengthen the role of products within the framework of standardized EMS.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Environmental Managemt System (EMS) is a popular tool where many Swedish SMEs is certified to the EMS-standard ISO 14001. The update of the standard ISO 14001:2015 included several new criteria for organizations to fulfill where they have a transition period of three years to update their certification. It is therefore relevant to study Swedish SMEs who recently updated their certification to let their own experiences come through. Purpose: This study aims to contribute with knowledge to how SMEs experience drivers, barriers and practical implications connected to the implementation of ISO 14001. Method: A qualitative multiple case study on two SMEs has been conducted with focus on the cases’ subjective perceptions. Document studies and interviews will provide a hermeneutic narrative interpretation where each case is presented as a narrative. Conclusion: Customer demands are according to the study the most significant driver for these SMEs to implements ISO 14001. The implementation and maintenance of ISO 14001 appears to be a challenge caused by internal resistance and the fact that the standard is not optimal for the structure of SMEs. We have not found indications that ISO 14001:2015 helps SMEs to tackle this problem. However, many positive implications have been found, although it is disputable if the positive aspects are larger than the barriers. As the customer demands are increasing, SMEs appear to have little to say which leads to the conclusion that ISO 14001 can be perceived y SMEs as a necessary pain.

Abstract:
The impact the company has on the environment is assessed from a holistic perspective. These aspects, in conjunction with relevant environmental legislation, govern the environmental work so that positive effects are achieved. Environmental goals and environmental policy ensure that management is committed and engaged in work to reduce environmental impacts and achieve constant improvements regarding the environmental issues. An environmental management system enables companies to communicate that their environmental work is practiced in a trustworthy way. The aim of the implementation of the environmental management system ISO 14001 to make it easier for companies to work with environmental issues and improve communication between stakeholders and companies. The aim of this paper is to investigate how SMEs experience the implementation of environmental management systems according to ISO 14001 as well as how management in these companies motivates and educates employees regarding ISO 14001. The study is based on a qualitative approach and three companies have played the role of informants whose answers are reported in the collected empirical data. Based on the informants' answers, parallels have been drawn to previous research and theories. The results have shown that companies have difficulties with ISO 14001 and that both management and employees are not sufficiently educated around ISO 14001 and environmental management system. When implementing environmental management systems, it is important that both management and employees are well-educated, motivated and committed to the dynamics of the company

Abstract:
<p>Environmental problems are seen as the first priority that all countries try to find as a solution to be more sustainable. These issues arise due to the lack of our responsibility to the world. Researchers agree on that the starting point in changing our society to be green is to increase environmental awareness (Jiang et al., 1999). Several sectors accept this idea like UNESCO which focuses on education as a tool to promote sustainable development (UNESCO, 2002).</p><p> </p><p>Following UNESCO, our study investigates university students’ environmental awareness. The Authors hope that the outcome not only reflects university performance, but also helps to develop the environment in the future.  Hence, the authors selected the University of Gävle or HiG, as a case study because it is a best practice in Environmental Management System (EMS). Moreover, HiG received the ISO 14001 certificate and it has a continuous improvement program (Sammalisto, 2007, p.69). </p><p> </p><p>The study was started by reviewing research literatures concerning Environmental Management System (EMS), Sustainable Development (SD), Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Environmental Awareness. The authors found that there are few studies talking about students’ awareness in universities after being awarded ISO 14001. Notice that the research was seen only from environmental perspective (Flint, 2004).</p><p> </p><p>To answer research questions, two surveys were adopted. The first part focused on teachers and officers (or staffs) who work on environmental issues. While, the second part focused on the students which were divided into Swedish and international.</p><p> </p><p>The research outcomes indicate that HiG has a good EMS performance supported by annual environmental audits, regular policy revision and the attempts to minimize non-conformities. Conversely, when the authors pointed at student awareness, it shows that students have insufficient environmental knowledge. Moreover, some students have lower environmental awareness and act in a less ecological friendly way. Nevertheless, a knowledge problem was also found among several university staffs. This is because of the lack of communication about environmental issues inside the staffs community and lack of environmental education for students.</p><p> </p><p>Whatever the university situation is, there are some groups of staff and students eager to develop themselves and their university. This point of strength could be the best driving force. It can push the university forward until the university reaches sustainable development and it brings the aware graduates into society.</p>

Abstract:
New conceptions of environmental management arise all the time, based on the principles that establish an environmental quality policy, incorporating the basis of a sustainable development to the industrial activities. Objectives: To evaluate the certification process in an industry of the automotive sector and how involved the employees of the company are. Methods: ISO 14001 implementation case study, with a descriptive, qualitative and quantitative methodology, in a multinational company located in São Bernardo do Campo - São Paulo. Some criterions used to choose this company were: having an ISO 14001 certificate; an effective EMS; leadership in the environmental issues; social work with the local communities; and, most of all, that would allow this study to happen. Data were obtained through a survey technique, and a questionnaire as the main tool of the research. Data analysis was carried out through contents analysis methods (BARDIN 1995). Results: The company has more than 9.000 employees and 21 internal divisions involved with the implementation process. Most of the employees are engineer (68,2 per cent ). The decision of going after the ISO 14001 certificate was based on the companys environmental commitment (43,5 per cent ), and according to 34,8 per cent of the answers, it was motivated by the attraction of new customers and markets (or at least retain access to customers and markets with EMS requirements) and to prevent pollution and conserve resources. After the certification, 82,6 per cent of the employees said that some significant changes were made inside the company, such as: enhance compliance and reduce/mitigate risks (95,7 per cent ); enhance awareness and involvement of the employee team (95,7 per cent ). You should note, however, that developing and implementing an EMS may have some difficulties. 52,2 per cent pointed out that the environmental education is the most difficult thing to achieve. The answers obtained with the working class show that they do know (47,5 per cent ) the meaning of ISO 14001. Once the system is implemented, it is possible to realize the most relevant benefits obtained through the certification, which are the environmental liability (43,5 per cent ); and enhance image with public, regulators, lenders, investors (21,7 per cent ). The ISO 14001 certification brings improvements in overall environmental performance and compliance. Conclusions: Although the EMS is not the solution for all environmental issues, it can result in both business and environmental benefits. The standard establishes a management framework by which an organizations\' impacts on the environment can be systematically identified and reduced.

Besides the Environmental Licensing, which includes the Preliminary License, Installation License and Operating License, and the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), two management tools can assist the management of WWTPs in this way: the NBR ISO 14001:2004, for the implementation of an Environmental Management System (EMS), and NBR ISO 14004:2005, which recommends conducting an Initial Environmental Review before installing the system, although does not have tools that can be used for this purpose. Thus, the general objective of this work was to develop tools to aid in conducting this Review in WWTPs, having as object of study WWTP-Monjolinho - São Carlos-SP, which wastewater treatment consists of: preliminary treatment, biological treatment with UASB reactors, dissolved-air flotation - preceded by flocculation with metallic coagulants and polymers -, ultraviolet (UV) radiation disinfection and postaeration of treated wastewater by cascade aeration before its throwing to Monjolinho river. The research was performed in four stages. At first, it was performed theoretical background; in the second, the knowledge of the object of study; in the third, the tools of Initial Environmental Review were developed and applied to WWTP-Monjolinho; and in the fourth stage there was the presentation and discussion of the results, as well as the research finals considerations. Eight tools and also the results of their application to WWTP-Monjolinho were obtained. It is considered that, through the tools developed in this work, the WWTPs, as WWTP-Monjolinho, can guide themselves more appropriately in search of the EMS installation and improve their activities, in order to more adequately meets increasing aspirations from society for a better quality of life and environmental protection and conservation.<br>A construção de redes coletoras e a implantação de Estações de Tratamento de Esgoto sanitários (ETEs) não são garantias de que os problemas ambientais e de saúde pública acerca do esgoto sanitário sejam plenamente resolvidos, pois as ETEs necessitam de insumos para funcionar e geram resíduos e rejeitos durante sua operação e podem, portanto, também tornar-se fontes de poluição ambiental e causar danos à população.

Abstract:
Today many global dilemmas are stemming from organizations’ business activities. In addition, many corporations’ have realized the importance to aspire a green-public image in combination with cutting possible liability costs. Therefore, many companies are interested to participate in the attempts of reducing the impacts related to their business activities. However, at the same time organizations are facing many constraints in the transformation towards environmentally aware and responsible organizations. Therefore, companies often strive to implement an Environmental Management System (EMS) in order to achieve organizational guidance when establishing, developing and reviewing their business practices towards both corporate and environmental goals. The theories discussed in this master thesis discloses that the implementation process of an EMS often requires a cultural revolution in organizations, which can be a challenge especially for companies present in developing countries, where environmental issues often are marginalized due to low levels of environmental awareness and weak institutions. The purpose of this master thesis identifies potential obstacles in facing ISO 14001 EMS for Stora Enso’s agro-forestry project in Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the efforts that would stimulate the adoption facing ISO 14001 EMS. This was analyzed through a combination of a qualitative text analysis of scientific papers and a case study with eight semi-structured interviews with managers from Stora Enso Lao Co., Ltd. This study points out limited availability of support and resources, unclear policies, constrained participation and communication, inadequate knowledge about environmental management and ISO 14001 EMS as the potential obstacles for Stora Enso Lao Co., Ltd to tackle. Therefore, in order to stimulate the adoption of ISO 14001 EMS the potential efforts suggested in this master thesis are more money in order to promote environmental training and organizational changes in terms of increased participation of employees and communication between internal and external stakeholders.

Abstract:
<p>Environmental (‘Green’) issues have become an increasingly important issue in contemporary business management. Pressure on business regarding environmental issues is increasing and is expected to continue to do so into the future. Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are thought to have a large combined effect on the environment and this area has been cited as problematic for the SME sector. This thesis investigates collaboration amongst SMEs through networks as a way to increase environmental activity in this sector – focusing on the Hackefors model (a joint ISO 14001 certification network). The empirical study of this thesis involved a survey study of 4 networks that have implemented the Hackefors model to achieve ISO 14001 in Sweden. The networks represented SMEs from a large variety of industries and the study brought a 75% response rate. It explored different aspects of the Hackefors model, such as the motives and benefits for entering the network, drawbacks and disadvantages of the model, network relations, pressures for ISO 14001 certification and the possibility of extended network relations after certification. The results showed that group ISO 14001 certification using the Hackefors model is an effective way for an SME to implement an EMS. Not only is the model successful in achieving certification, it also brings many other benefits with it. The Hackefors model can be seen as an effective way to encourage SMEs who may not have previously considered an EMS, to implement ISO 14001. In addition, it helps companies become ISO 14001 certified at a significantly lower cost and to overcome some of the problems traditionally associated with SMEs, such as size and lack of time.</p>

Abstract:
In this study the aim was to investigate and nuance how the Volvo Construction Equipment (VCE) production Hub can evolve their environmental work, at Chinese wheel loader producer Shandong Lingong (SDLG), to reach Volvo standard. The study also aimed to investigate what international companies in China should take into consideration in their environmental work. The work was carried out by answering the following research questions; In which way or ways can the VCE Hub at SDLG evolve their environmental work to reach Volvo standard? What should international companies take into consideration in their environmental work when establishing on the Chinese market, and why? A lot of the information in this Thesis is based on empirical data, i.e. interviews. Three interviews with Swedish companies have been carried out. They are all highly valuing Environmental work but use different methods, their situations are unlike and they produce diverse products. Several interviews with people working with environmental issues in different ways have also been done, as well as with the SGS; a Chinese certification body. Three different companies with production in or around Shanghai were chosen; Volvo CE, SKF, and Sandvik. All three companies are originally Swedish but with production in China. Environmental work is highly prioritized in Sweden and the companies have global environmental policies and goals. The three companies were chosen because they are in different production areas but they are striving in the same direction with environmental issues in China. They are working differently and their situations are of various kinds. In 2006 Volvo CE invested in a Chinese wheel loader producer named Shandong Lingong. Volvo CE has a Hub, at the plant, which runs independently. SDLG are still not ISO 14001 certified and do not have an environmental management system (EMS) that is conformably with the Volvo demands. The most important to take into consideration when doing business in China is according to the study; top management support, to do training for the employees, mediate the importance of awareness, and to have knowledge about Chinese regulations. These are some of the issues International companies have to deal with when doing business in China. A well established EMS is a necessity for a good environmental work. To implement an EMS in the Hub as a pilot project is the best solution according to the information gathered in this thesis. SDLG could be a part-, they can evaluate-, and later it could be possible to implement the process in the whole SDLG. Due to this methodology they will learn how to work according to Volvo requirements and obtain benefits of an implementation. There are three different alternatives for the ISO 14001 certification of the Hub according to this work. For the Hub to be ISO 14001 certified together with another Volvo plant seems to be the best alternative thought it reduces the amount of work with legal authorities. VCE’s EMS will also not be compared with SDLG and it will be moneysaving. The policies and Environmental aspects (EA) though have to be rewritten to be suitable for both the factories.

Abstract:
Product life cycle perspective, a concept emanating from sustainable product development has gradually emerged as one of the key areas in product design and development. Several studies and research have shown the direct co-relationship between product design, development and manufacturing and its impact on our environment and ecosystem. The need to take these environmental factors into consideration is fundamental and highly prioritized in organizations that seeks to minimize the environmental impact of their operations in our ecosystem and if possible redirect these operations to contribute positively to saving the natural ecosystem. In the latest revision of ISO 14001:2015 standard, the term product life cycle perspective (LCP) has now become a fundamental requirement for organizations to fulfill. The requirement specifies the need for life cycle perspectives to be a significant factor during product design and development. However, the practical challenges of continuously integrating life circle analysis in product design is enormous for companies and organizations. This thesis will look at the challenges confronting ISO 14001 certified product manufacturing companies and allied services in implementing product LCP during product development and design and also the interpretations given by auditors from certification companies concerning how companies implement product LCP in relation to the requirements in ISO 14001:2015 at the product design and development stages.

Full text
Abstract:
The Swedish company Kockums AB, at the forefront within maritime and naval technology, is in need of a tool, document, and/or method to include environmental aspects in their product development process. This is mainly because of additional requirements put on Kockums AB from their main customer. Ship recycling is the major issue that has to be addressed and included in Kockums AB’sworking procedures. Moreover, ship recycling is a pressing issue to handle due to horrible conditions in South Asian countries, where most ship dismantling is taking place. For these reasons, the objective of this M.Sc. thesis was to integrate environmental aspects in the product development process at Kockums AB by designing and proposing a way of implementing a tool, document, and/or method. Environmental product requirements that Kockums AB is demanded to fulfill mainly derives from customers, classification societies, laws and legislations, and themselves. The Hong Kong Convention has been adapted, in 2009, but is yet to enter into force. Ship recycling is covered by the convention, and an ‘Inventory of Hazardous Materials’ has to be provided from the ship builder, and hence this is the main aspect for Kockums AB to consider. Naval ships are, however, excluded from the Hong Kong Convention. Kockums AB does not have a routine on how to handle environmental requirements nor are environmental aspects included in their product development process. Consequently, Kockums AB’senvironmental ambition should not be put too high and rather aim at follow laws. In an empiricalstudy, regarding environmental aspects at Kockums AB, difficulties were identified. Lack of environmental knowledge, communication problems, and misunderstandings regarding the ambiguous term environment showed to be most notable. The three most prominent success factors for asuccessful integration of ecodesign, from the conducted literature review and empirical findings, are education for employees, existence of an environmental champion, and top management support. A Long-term Environmental Action Plan (LEAP), which took the success factors into account and contains 18 Actions, was developed for Kockums AB, and is the ultimate result of this research. The LEAP was developed in accordance with ISO 14006, a new standard for incorporation of ecodesign in Environmental Management Systems, with the aim of reducing adverse environmental impactsthroughout a product’s lifecycle. Moreover, the proposed way of implementing the LEAP was based on a ”Plan, Do, Check, Act” methodology from Product-Oriented Environmental Management Systems (POEMS). POEMS focus on a product’s environmental efficiency throughout its lifecycle, by a systematic integration of ecodesign in the company’s strategies and practices, and hence continual improvements. This way of implementation should be familiar to Kockums AB because the company is certified according to ISO 14001, where continual improvement of environmental performance is a key factor. The proposed LEAP includes tools, documents, and methods that are to be used in daily work and product development at Kockums AB. It is a step towards environmentally conscious design and enhanced environmental knowledge at Kockums AB. Additionally, as a result of the LEAP, the expectation is that environmental conscious mindsets of employees arise.

Abstract:
With the hot topic of the climate change effects a desperate change is needed in the world ofthe national and global industry. A good start is an environmental management system, EMS.The main focus of the on-going process of an EMS is to organise the company’s work, to decrease the use of raw materials and energy, and to severely reduce pollutions to air, water and land. The EMS is a part of a sustainable development and a valuable tool for everyindustry who wants to better their image and keeping environmental concerned customers. Asia and Thailand are growing markets where SME and large-scale industries have started tointroduce ISO standards. The top management of these organisations have opened their eyes to the demand of the clients regarding less environmental impact from their products and services. The motive for this study, carried out as an MFS is to get an insight of the Thai industries and how well they have implemented their EMS.<br>www.ima.kth.se

Abstract:
Do standardised environmental management systems (EMS) lead to improved environmental performance? This depends on to what extent these systems lead to changes in important flows of material and energy, which for manufacturing companies, in turn, mean that the product development process is important. Consequently, it appears vital to investigate the connection between EMS and ‘Design for the Environment’ (DFE), i.e. the connection between these management systems and concepts that deal with environmental issues in product development. This paper presents product-oriented environmental management systems (POEMS), including characteristics of existing models, experiences from projects where these models have been tested and experiences concerning the product connection in ‘normal’ EMS. It includes a discussion of important factors influencing to what extent DFE activities are integrated into EMS and/or the outcome of such integration. There are many motives for integrating the two concepts. Firstly, DFE thinking might enrich EMS by contributing with a life-cycle perspective. If EMS encompassed products' life cycles to a greater extent, they would be a better complement to the often facility-oriented legal requirements and authority control. Secondly, EMS might remove the pilot project character of DFE activities and lead to continuous improvement. Thirdly, integration could lead to successful co-operation, both internally and externally. However, existing studies show that there is a mixed picture concerning the extent ‘normal’ EMS currently encompass products.

Abstract:
Aquest treball també estudia el nivell de coneixement de les empreses quant a polítiques, normatives i eines associades a la gestió ambiental.<br>Environmental aspects have important and increasing implications for companies, because the way they deal with them will have a positive or negative affect on the objectives set by the companies themselves. In the literature on the subject, there is talk of environmental opportunities as areas in which companies have to improve to achieve an advantageous position among their competitors. <br/><br/>In other words, the environment has become a basic component of strategic positioning with regard to the decision making process of a company and is crucial in considerations of cost and design of the product. In the same way, it is the key to opening up new markets. Furthermore, environmental problems are becoming more and more numerous, complex and interrelated and the traditional way of dealing them, at the end of the process, has proved to be highly inefficient. <br/><br/>Because of the situation described above, more and more companies are moving down the road of environmental management. Usually, as a first step they adopt the UNE-EN-ISO 14001 rules or Regulation 1836/93 of Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) as introductory models of EMS, since each of these offer a systematic framework for incorporating environmental aspects in the daily decisions of a company.<br/><br/>The main objective of this dissertation is to analyse the introduction of corporate environmental management and the EMS implementation in Catalonian industry.

Abstract:
In recent years, organizations have sought an efficient and effective means of management systems (MS). Quality management systems (QMS) and environmental management systems (EMS) are important contributors towards this goal, together with the introduction of more widely known standards published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The QMS is based on the international standard ISO 9001 and for the case of EMS the ISO 14001 norm represents the standard. Their implementation has led to unprecedented worldwide figures. By the end of 2011, there were over one million (1,111,698) ISO 9001 certificates and more than a quarter million (267,457) organisation were certified in ISO 14001 (ISO, 2012). Based on the previous, the present study aims to analyse and capture present and future trends regarding these standards. An empirical analysis is performed focusing primordially on the pulp and paper industry. Abstract:
An environmental management system (EMS) is a management process designed to address systematically the environmental impacts of any entity. The process utilises a risk-based assessment of issues, focusing on continual improvement using data generated by the system. The best-known codification of EMS is the international Standard, ISO 14001. Ratified in 1996, and arguably applicable to any industry, this Standard was initially used in agriculture in 1997. This thesis considers the potential and actual outcomes of EMS use in agriculture. A multi-methods approach (involving case studies, document analysis, participant observation, reflection, and key informant interviews) was used to determine the benefits of EMS use and barriers to implementation. Firstly, 40 case studies of adoption of EMS by farmers were conducted to assess the applicability of EMS to the agricultural context. A subsequent study compared the outcomes, costs, benefits, behaviours and practices between 17 EMS users and 23 non-users. These studies indicated that EMS use conferred diverse benefits, and that EMS users differed in some ways to non-users. The benefits of EMS use were considered further, specifically the potential to assess outcomes using commonly recognised sustainability indicators, and for EMS to act as an integrative management tool. The implications of conceptualising EMS as an innovation and the role of elements of EMS in encouraging adoption of other innovations were then considered. Finally, the potential of EMS to promote social and cultural change was examined. The research revealed that the EMS process was very useful to agriculture and easily implemented on-farm with minimal changes to the way in which EMS was typically applied. Using EMS provided farmers with a flexible tool to deal with a diverse range of intra- and extra-business considerations. Importantly, EMS gave a transparent and credible link to the information desired by natural resource management agencies. The EMS process enhanced and embedded innovation, while also being an innovation in itself. Most importantly, the EMS process strengthened change in social domains, leading to a culture shift in thinking about environmental and business management, increasing communications and interactions, and embedding and reinforcing change in practices. EMS use provided diverse outcomes across the triple bottom line spectrum, providing a powerful mechanism to achieve policy, environmental, business and social outcomes. Despite the benefits of EMS use in agriculture, however, total adoption remains low. The use and applicability of EMS in agriculture could be greatly enhanced by clearer government policy and support. Other issues include clarity around the implementation of the various components of EMS, recognition of the scope and context in which the EMS process is used, mechanisms to encourage adoption, and the development of well-trained and knowledgeable EMS facilitators. Recommendations for addressing these issues are provided and implications of this thesis for future research are discussed.
