Abstract:
Isaac ben Solomon Ibn al-Ḥadib (or al-Aḥdab) emigrated from Castile to Sicily no later than 1396. In astronomy, his most important work, written in Hebrew, is The paved way ( Oraḥ selula), a set of tables for the motions of the Sun and the Moon. Here, we focus attention on his unusual tables for finding the difference in time and the difference in longitude between mean and true syzygy, where syzygy refers to the conjunction and opposition of the Sun and the Moon. It is shown that he took into account the effect of Ptolemy’s second lunar model on the velocity of the Moon at syzygy, which was done by very few astronomers in the Middle Ages. It is also noteworthy that he took some parameters from the zij of al-Battānī and others from the Parisian Alfonsine Tables, using them inconsistently in these tables.

Abstract:
There has been an upswing in attention to South African biography in the past few decades, with a welcome trend towards remaking or revising the canon of important figures from the South African past. This has included edited collections of the works of prominent individuals, and notable among these have been early-twentieth century black African politicians and writers. Historical Publications Southern Africa (renamed from its previous moniker, the Van Riebeeck Society) has published four edited collections of the writings of such individuals since 2008, including Isaac Williams Wauchope, Richard Victor Solope Thema, and A.B. Xuma. A Life in Letters, a collection of Solomon T. Plaatje's correspondence, is the fourth such volume in just over a decade. There are 260 letters, written from 1896 to 1932, included in the book. Most are in English, but some are in Setswana, Dutch/Afrikaans, and a few are in German. Although a number of the letters are from the collections of the Cullen Library at the University of the Witwatersrand, the reviewer counted twenty-seven different collections across three continents. The book is thus an excellent resource not only for historians, but also for students and the general public who now have access to a wide range of Plaatje's thoughts, opinions, and emotions that are evident in his letters.

Abstract:
Abstract Preclinical and clinical investigations have identified unresolved inflammation and oxidative/nitrosative stress as two coconspirators, which play a multifaceted role and serve as driving force in the journey to cancer development. Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory disease of the colon that predisposes to colorectal cancer, the fourth leading cause of cancer worldwide. Overexpression of proinflammatory mediators, a distinct network of intracellular signaling molecules including upstream kinases and transcription factors, facilitates tumor promotion and CRC progression. Current therapeutic drugs for CRC have severe adverse effects. Several investigations indicate that a plant-based diet rich in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables is effective in preventing or reversing premalignant lesions. Thus, the search for novel chemopreventive agents of physiologic relevance acting on specific and/or multiple molecular and cellular targets holds promise as a rational strategy for the control of health-threatening diseases such as ulcerative colitis and CRC. A bioactive component, 6-gingerol from ginger (Zingiber officinale) has been reported to possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Our study demonstrates that 6-gingerol protects against dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis in BalBc mice. 6-Gingerol attenuated DSS-mediated increase in immunoexpression of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB [p65]), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1 β), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), mitogen-activated kinase (P 38), RANTES, Bcl2, monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP-1), and β-catenin expression. Similarly, 6-gingerol modulated DSS decrease in adenomatous polyposis coli (APC), DESMIN, Interleukin 10, and levels of antioxidant enzymes. In the two-stage (DMBA initiation and TPA promotion) mouse skin carcinogenesis model, 6-gingerol downregulated the expression of COX-2 and NF-κB. Also, in the benzo(a)pyrene and DSS (BDS) model of colorectal cancer, BDS induced adenocarcinoma and decreased APC, p53 expression, and number of apoptotic cells. In addition, tumor incidence, β-catenin, and cyclin D1 expressions were increased. Treatment with 6-gingerol decreased adenocarcinoma significantly and modulated the expression of these proteins and transcription factors. This anti-inflammatory phytochemical exerted chemopreventive effects by modulating intracellular signaling cascades and proinflammatory mediators and therefore qualifies as therapeutic signature for chemoprevention of inflammation-associated CRC. Abstract:
From the EditorsHuseyin Uzunboylu, Cigdem HursenIt is an honour for us to welcome you as Editors of Cypriot Journal of Educational Sciences which has accepted publications indexed in qualified databases since 2006. Cypriot Journal of Educational Sciences (CJES) is listed in many scholarly citation indexes; DOAJ, Ulrich's Educational Research Abstracts (ERA), EBSCO, Google Scholar, PsycINFO, Asian Education Index & AWER index. Also our major aim is to increase the quality of the journal day by day. We are ready to publish the new studies of Cypriot Journal of Educational Sciences which has 9 full length articles written by authors from, Cyprus, Canada, Nigeria and Turkey. The aim of this issue is to give the researchers an opportunity to share their academic studies. First of all, I would like to thank all who have contributed to this issue. There are different focuses. For example, Hayat Boz and Sibel Esra Karatasexplored the impact of Internet use on QOL of the elderly by examining available researches in this field. By searching on ADM Digital Library, WEB Science, ERIC, PsycINFO and PubMed databases, this study reviewed 25 studies published after 1990 that investigates the relationship between Internet use and QOL of elderly. The synthesis of the research findings indicates that the functional use of computer and Internet improves QOL for older people. The findings also provide a comprehensive perspective on the current state of knowledge and raises questions for further research. On the other hand, Japo Oweikeye Amasuomo, examined the academic performance of students in the compulsory courses in technical education during the transition period of first and second years of three years Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) Technical programme before choosing their disciplines in the third year. The study established that, students in Electrical/Electronics discipline performed better than their counterparts who made Automobile, Building, Metalwork and Woodwork as their discipline, and the academic performance of the five groups of students differed significantly. Also, Hussain Ali Alkharusi examined students' perceptions of classroom assessment tasks as a function of gender, subject area, and grade level. Results showed that students tended to hold positive perceptions of their classroom assessment tasks in terms of congruence with planned learning, authenticity, student consultation, transparency, and diversity. In addition to these, Johnson Enero Upahi, Ganiyat Bukola Issa and Oloyede Solomon Oyelekan carried out a study on students. This study assesses the classroom activities which are the fundamental process required to determine the extent to which intended learning outcomes has been achieved. Emrah Soykan aimed to identification of views of teachers, students and their parents at Near East College in North Cyprus on use of tablets in education. The research is a descriptive case study. As result of the analysis carried out in this research, it has been seen that teachers, students and parents evaluate the problems related with tablet PCs under the following two sub-dimensions; the experienced problems of during tablet supported education and the benefits of tablet pc usage in education.Zeynep Karatas and E. Tremblay Richard examined the level of depressive symptoms of the secondary school students in Turkey and Canada has been aimed in this study. The research group of the study consists of 1050 secondary school students with the average age of 13. Their socio-economic levels are low in both countries, Canada and Turkey. The study revealed that the level of depressive symptoms of Turkish secondary school students has been found higher than the level of depressive symptoms of Canadian secondary school students. While the levels of depressive symptoms of the Canadian female students have been higher than male students, the level of depressive symptoms of Turkish students has not differentiated in terms of their genders. Behiye Akacan and Gurcan Secim examine the responses of university students in social anxiety situations in order to create a psychological counselling program with a structured group based on Cognitive Behavioural and Existential Approaches. These responses involve the behaviour and thoughts of the university students in situations where they experience or anticipate social anxiety. The findings of the study revealed that the thoughts regarding the social anxiety situations of the final year students studying in Guidance and Psychological Counselling and Pre-School Teaching departments are generally negative and their behaviour usually presents as desertion or avoidance. Also, Halil İbrahim Akyuz and Hafize Keser examined the effect of an educational agent, used in online task based learning media, and its form characteristics on problem solving ability perceptions of students. It is determined that applied method has an important effect on problem solving ability perception of students and that the educational agent in the role of teacher is more effective than the role of friend in the development of problem solving ability perception. Finally Muge Tacman and Nazan Comunoglu examined the way how the primary school class teachers evaluate the candidates, what their expect from the candidates and the effectivenes of the teaching training program being conducted in Ataturk Teacher Training Academy (AOA) to fulfill these expectations. Research findings were studied and interpreted in the framework of 4 main topics which are field knowledge, basic professional attitudes, effective communication and teaching abilities.I would like to express my thanks to all authors preferring Cypriot Journal of Educational Sciences to make their articles published, all reviewers working seriously in the process of publishing, and also quest editors supporting us in this process.Best regards,Prof. Dr. Huseyin Uzunboylu, Editor-in-ChiefAssist. Abstract:
This chapter addresses the poetry of Solomon Ibn Gabirol. Solomon was born in Malaga in 1021 or 1022, and lived the greater part of his life in Saragossa. From his early years, he was crippled by disease, and his illness is a constant theme of his poetry. He was compelled to live by his writing, and found a sympathetic patron in Yekutiel ben Isaac ibn Hasan, who was executed in 1039. Perhaps as a result of his indisposition, and his consequent sense of inferiority, he was not an easy companion, and he left Saragossa, to die, perhaps in Valencia, between 1053 and 1058. He devoted much of his life to the pursuit of philosophy or ‘wisdom’, in which he found consolation for his physical cares; he was an adherent of the Neoplatonic school. His absorption in the ‘new’ philosophy, however, contributed to his personal unpopularity in the Jewish community of Saragossa. Meanwhile, Solomon’s fame as a poet rests mainly on his liturgical poems, which are masterpieces of concision and delicacy. It was he who introduced into the Hebrew poetic canon the poem addressed to the ‘soul’, by which he generally meant man’s intellectual aspiration to discover God.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the Jewish culture of early medieval Europe, which is largely hidden by the mists of time and emerges into the light of surviving literary evidence only in the eleventh century. It refers to R. Isaac ben Jacob of Fez and R. Gershom ben Judah of Mainz, who provide a starting point for solid information about what rabbinic Judaism looked like in Spain and Germany. It also mentions R. Solomon ben Isaac (Rashi), who inaugurated the most creative Talmud centre in medieval Europe after he travelled from his home in northern France to the academies of the Rhineland. The chapter talks about historians who theorize about what was going on in the Midi while the Spanish and German academies were putting down roots. It also probes the scholarly consensus that detects an early Ashkenazi orientation in southern France.

Abstract:
The Commentary on the Torah by Solomon ben Isaac (1040–1105)—also known as Shlomo Yitzhaki, or Rashi—stands out as the most widely studied and influential Hebrew Bible commentary of all time. This chapter explores ways in which the Commentary can be seen not only as the most formative and authoritative of Jewish biblical commentaries but also as a work bearing canonical status, though it was never formally canonized and even met with pockets of stiff opposition. The chapter argues that criticism may actually have contributed to the Commentary’s attainment of preeminent status.

Abstract:
This chapter follows Isaac Mayer Wise into the presidency of Hebrew Union College. He left the second Council of the Union (1875) with his rapturous enthusiasm undimmed. He was showing congregational presidents and boards of trustees how by helping the union they would be helping themselves, as the union would ‘exert its influence to get every Israelite to observe the Sabbath and to be a member of the congregation’, and would supply the congregations with rabbis to whose oratory it would be a feast of reason to listen. After the board of governors resolved formally to appoint Wise president of Hebrew Union College, he performed his services gratuitously, and his only assistant was Solomon Eppinger, who had been on the staff of the Talmud Yelodim Institute. Though there was no ready-made grandeur surrounding the presidency, Wise responded in a tone which suggests that the official appointment affected him deeply.
