Abstract:
The Jeju Island power system consists of two-unidirectional high voltage direct current transmission systems (HVDC), thermal power plants, and renewable energy sources. The local government’s policy states that a 100 MW offshore wind farm should be constructed in the future. Due to the small size and sensitivity of the Jeju Island power system, power system analysis must be carried out before the installation of the new facility. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the Jeju Island power system with a new wind farm applied to uncontrolled diode rectifier HVDC. Although there are many studies about the grid connection method of offshore wind farms, its small grid connection analysis has been rarely investigated, especially in the diode rectifier HVDC method. Diode rectifier HVDC is a new grid connection method for offshore wind farms, which reduces the costs and increases the reliability of the offshore platform. To verify the accuracy and effectiveness of simulation models, steady and transient state scenarios were conducted using the PSCAD/EMTDC program. First, the model of the Jeju Island power system without a new wind farm was compared with measured power system data. Second, its power system connected with a diode rectifier HVDC was simulated in a steady state. Finally, disconnection and single line ground fault occurred at the offshore wind farm, respectively. From the simulation results, the grid stability of the Jeju Island power system was confirmed considering a new facility.

Abstract:
The power system on Jeju Island currently faces challenges due to an imbalance between power supply and demand owing to increasing renewable energy (RE) generation. Consequently, the multi-infeed high-voltage direct-current (MIDC) systems are expected to play an important role in reducing RE curtailment and increasing RE penetration. However, despite the balance between power supply and demand, transmission line (TL) overloads on Jeju Island, which has a low permissible rating, may lead to RE curtailment. We propose an operational strategy for the MIDC systems to mitigate TL overloading and RE curtailment. This strategy was aimed at managing the possible congestion of TLs, maintaining a power supply–demand balance, and increasing the penetration level of RE. In this paper, we present a scheme for calculating the operating points of the MIDC systems and allocating RE curtailment using optimization with security constraints to mitigate TL overloading. The proposed optimization model simplifies solving the mathematical equations involved by employing a sensitivity factor called the power transfer distribution factor (PTDF), using which linear programming (LP) optimization can be performed. To verify the feasibility of the operational strategy, case studies are conducted using an actual Jeju Island power system with a power system analysis tool—Power System Simulator for Engineering (PSS/E). The optimization problem was solved using MATLAB.

Abstract:
As Jeju Special Self-Governing Province advances policies to expand the adoption of renewable energy, the issue of power curtailment exceeding the capacity limits of the Jeju power system has emerged. This study analyzes a strategy to mitigate output constraints based on an energy storage system (ESS) using reused batteries from electric vehicles, which is more cost-effective than the existing ESS construction in Jeju, and can also be expected to have the effect of resource recycling by using used batteries recovered from electric vehicles that have reached the end of their life. It also proposes a way to supplement renewable energy variability through this. Jeju Island has the highest electric vehicle penetration rate in Korea, which makes it possible to build an ESS using used batteries. This study examines the operation model and charging/discharging strategy of a reusable battery-based ESS and analyzes the optimal ESS utilization plan to alleviate the curtailment problem. Based on this, we propose a strategy for building an ESS based on reusable batteries for electric vehicles to ensure the stable operation of the power system in Jeju.

Abstract:
In South Korea, Renewable Energy Sources (RES) have been increasing with the application of energy policies, such as Feed in Tariff (FIT) and the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). However, a rapid increase in RES supply leads to an uncertain power supply due to the intermittent output of RES. A representative example is the curtailment of Wind Turbines (WT), which frequently occurs in Jeju Island, South Korea. The proportion of RES power on Jeju Island is 67%, and there are cases where WT is curtailed among the operable sections to maintain the balance of power supply and demand. This paper applies Power-to-Gas (P2G) technology to hydrogenate, store, and utilize unused power to solve this problem. In this paper, Aewol-eup in Jeju Island is selected as a target site for case study. An Integrated Energy System (IES) for various energy operations is designed to control RES output. This paper proposes the optimal facility configuration and finally drives the optimal design and operation solution of IES by analyzing the objective functions and focusing on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) perspective.

Abstract:
Renewable energy curtailment often occurs to accommodate large amounts of renewable energy sources in power systems while maintaining system stability and reliability. Widely known methods, such as new transmission line construction, the introduction of demand-side resources, and the reduction of conventional generator output, can minimize the occurrence of curtailment; however, there are difficulties in introducing them because of social and economic problems. For these problems, the Jeju power system adopted a battery energy storage system (BESS) resource to mitigate the curtailment and secure frequency stability with the high penetration of renewable energy. The small-size Jeju island power system is operated with reliability must-run (RMR) units and high-voltage direct current (HVDC) lines connected to the mainland. Since the number of RMR units contributes to frequency stability by providing inertia, reducing the number of operating units for curtailment mitigation is difficult. Therefore, in this paper, based on the current “Carbon-Free island” policy and operation plan of the Jeju power system, we proposed a BESS for reducing the number of RMR units, observe the effect of reducing curtailment using the BESS, and suggest a practical operation plan to reduce the number of RMR units under conditions that secure frequency stability.

Abstract:
This work deals with the deployment of distributed power sources into the electric power grid. The nature of these sources causes that the massive integration may experience problems with power quality in the local context, and also overall reliability of supply in the range of interconnected power systems may be endangered. Work is focused on local voltage quality problems with special emphasis on analysis and design of tools (e.g. reactive power compensation units of power plants or dynamic voltage control by transformers 110/22kV) for voltage control in power distribution systems. These tools should be used as a part of uniform concept of voltage control. The proposed concept is involved.

Abstract:
The essays in this book take up various related aspects of Guillaume de Machaut’s legacy, especially as established by his judgment series. The salient features of that legacy include the focus on fame and authorial reputation; and, within this context, there is both the intra- and extratextual self to be contemplated, along with the emergence of an I possessing ontological fullness. The Machaldian poem manifests a shifted cultural understanding that comprehended a poetic machinery, one in which the poet (the real Guillaume) and the poet’s I (his intratextual confection) together modulate the flow of literary, social, and even political power, within the text and sometimes beyond it. The flow is most often realized through the institution of patronage. The dramatizations of the patronage system become integral within a conceptualization of authorship that is nearly modern, not so readily recognizable as medieval. In the work of Machaut and his heirs we find the problematizing of authority, the theatrics of the very notion of judgment, the late medieval dit’s capacity to leave judgment to its reader, as well as the thought-provoking ambivalence of an un-concluded jeu-parti.
