Abstract:
This study examined the dynamic evolution of Fulɓe (Fulani) kinship structures within Jigawa State, Nigeria. Jigawa State, located in northern Nigeria, is home to a diverse range of ethnic groups, in addition to the Fulɓe. Some of these ethnic groups include Zarma (Zabarmawa), Hausa, Kanuri, Bade, Ngizim, Gungawa, and so on. Some typologies of Fulɓe people in Jigawa State include Nomadic Fulɓe, Sedentary Fulɓe, Agro-pastoral Fulɓe, Fulɓe Traders, etc. The research employed qualitative methods by utilizing secondary sources such as documents and records, books, journals, and internet sources to collect data on the dynamic evolution of Fulɓe kinship structures within Jigawa State. The investigation draws on the social structure theory to comprehend the traditional Fulɓe kinship systems, elucidating their essential functions in maintaining stability and order within Jigawa State. The findings reveal that the evolution of Fulɓe kinship structures in Jigawa State is intricately linked to historical events such as colonialism, the spread of formal education, urbanization, economic transformations, and the assimilation of modern values. Consequently, Fulɓe kinship structures in Hadejia Emirate, Ringim, Dutse, Kazaure, Birnin Kudu, and Buji, in Jigawa State, exhibit a synthesis of traditional and modern influences by adapting to the changing societal landscape. This adaptation involves a shift towards an increased emphasis on individual choice, smaller nuclear families, more flexible kinship networks, and a heightened focus on individual accomplishments. In light of these findings, the study advocates for collaborative efforts between the government and Fulɓe communities in Jigawa State to formulate policies that are supportive of the distinctive kinship structures in the State.

Abstract:
This study investigated evaluation of geospatial climatic variation and aridity increase, high risk zone with annual seasonal variation for a period of thirty years (30 years) from 1990 to 2020 in Jigawa State. Climatic data for this work are global data sources, which include; Tropical Application of Meteorology Satellite (TAMSAT) and NASA Earth observatory. Temperature data was acquired from NASA Earth observatory while precipitation data and evapotranspiration data were obtained from TAMSAT respectively. The seasonal variation of Jigawa State was investigated using an excel spread sheet to compare precipitation and temperature in the extreme Jigawa north and Jigawa south of the areas was also analyzed to find a critical environmental factor in determining the evolution of natural vegetation by considering the water stress which may occur during reduction of vegetation cover. Results showed that there was higher evapotranspiration and temperature but less precipitation in the northern part of Jigawa state. The rate of evapotranspiration is also high from 2011 to 2020. Aridity ranges for the Jigawa state are characterized by very high aridity and very low aridity. Aridity is very high in the extreme north of Jigawa, with an aridity value of 0.20 and a land area of 9,062.7 km2 or 39 percent (%) land mass; aridity is very low in the extreme south of Katsina, with a value of 0.40 and a land area of 5,044.5 km2 or 22 percent (%) land mass. There is more precipitation in southern Jigawa than in the northern part. On the other way round, the temperature is higher in northern Jigawa than in the southern part.

Abstract:
This study examined the impact of technology on the kinship of the Fulɓe people in Jigawa State, Nigeria. The study employs secondary data and content analysis methods to achieve its objectives. It utilizes the diffusion of innovations theory as a theoretical framework to comprehend the impact of technology on Fulɓe kinship in Jigawa state. The investigation reveals that technology facilitates improved communication among Fulɓe communities, bolsters livestock management, introduces new economic opportunities for the Fulɓe culture and economy, expands the horizons of education, offers new possibilities for Fulɓe families to conceive and have children, enhances morbidity and reduces mortality rates among Fulɓe people in Jigawa State. On the other hand, technology diminishes face-to-face interaction among them, instigates changes in economic dynamics, challenges traditional values and norms deeply embedded within the Fulɓe community, introduces new methods of influencing ideas about lineage, inheritance, and the transmission of family identity, alters family structures and caregiving dynamics within the Fulɓe kinship system in Jigawa state. The study, therefore, recommends that government and community leaders should collaborate on initiatives that integrate indigenous wisdom with innovative technologies that can improve lives while preserving the essential aspects of the Fulɓe kinship system in Jigawa State.

Abstract:
Abstract Despite recent advances in reducing poverty across the world, millions of people remain on the verge of or already living in severe multidimensional poverty especially in third world nations. The poor in Nigeria suffer from a feeling of voicelessness, helplessness, mistreatment, a complete lack of capacity to influence important choices that impact their life, and a lack of social networking inside state and societal organisations. The goal of this research is to conduct a geospatial analysis of Nigeria’s multidimensional poverty and to identify the geospatial distribution pattern of poverty in Jigawa State as a case study. As a result, comprehend the causes of Jigawa’s complicated poverty condition and to create the state’s first ever poverty map. Also, to look at the country’s poverty trends, with a particular emphasis on Jigawa. The National Bureau of Statistics provided the headcount poverty statistics for Nigerian states, which were downloaded and analysed using simple geospatial approach. The findings revealed a dynamic pattern in Nigerian state poverty from 1996 to 2019. The distribution of poverty in Jigawa state, as a case study, revealed that physical and natural environment resources play a critical role in the state’s high poverty rate. Natural drainage, fertile soil, flat topography, and vegetation pattern all aid other people’s poverty levels in different parts of the state. Future study will examine the linking between environmental, social, religious, and political factors and multidimensional poverty using a geospatial method to map the state’s poverty, which has consistently ranked at the bottom of the Nigeria States Poverty Index.

Abstract:
Financial inclusion, characterized by access and usage of formal financial services, is a critical driver of economicdevelopment and poverty reduction. In Nigeria, a country with a large population of unbanked and underbanked individuals, adoption of Digital Financial Services (DFS) presents a promising avenue for expanding financial inclusion among low- incomehouseholds. This study focused on evaluating the effectiveness of DFS for promoting financial inclusion among low-incomehouseholds in Jigawa State, North-West Nigeria. Usinga mixed-methods research approach, this study comprehensively assessedthe impact of DFS on financial inclusion indicators. The research draws from a representative sample of low- income householdsin Jigawa State, examining utilization of DFS platforms, perceptions of thebenefits and challenges associated with these services.Findings indicate notable increase in financial inclusion among low-income households in Jigawa State following the introductionof DFS. Factors contributing to this positive trend include improved convenience, reduced transaction costs, and increasedfinancial literacy. However, challenges related to digital literacy (complexity) and trust in digital platforms (perceived risk) persistand need to be addressed to maximize the impact of DFS. Thisresearchcontributes to the ongoing discourse on financial inclusionand digital financial services by providing empirical insights specific to the Jigawa State context. The outcomes of this study areexpected to inform policymakers, financial institutions, and DFS providers on strategies for further enhancing the reach andeffectiveness of digital financial services in promoting financial inclusion among low-income households not only in Jigawa Statebut also in similarregions across Nigeria and beyond.

Bappa, Salisu Jamilu. "The impact of compensation on public sector construction workers in Jigawa State of Nigeria." Thesis, University of Wolverhampton, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2436/620335.

Full text
Abstract:
Compensation is the remuneration which workers receive for their services or contributions to the organisation. The literature reviewed showed that compensation packages have relationship with workers’ motivation, job satisfaction, attraction and retention. On this basis, this study established a conceptual framework based on equity theory and used it to examine how compensation might be influencing workers’ motivation, job satisfaction, attraction and retention in the Ministry of Works and Transport of Jigawa State of Nigeria. The dependent variables considered in this study are limited to salary, allowance, gratuity, and pension as independent variables while the corresponding motivation, job satisfaction, attraction and retention are the dependent variables. The Positivist paradigm guided this empirical research; which holds the principle that knowledge is arrived at through the gathering of facts that provide the basis of laws. Thus, a quantitative research design was employed. A questionnaire was developed, pilot-tested and administered to gather data on workers’ motivation, job satisfaction, attraction and retention regarding four job compensable aspects, namely: salary, allowances, gratuity and pension. A total of 265 questionnaires were administered and 260 were collected through the early and late response technique. This represents a response rate of 98%. The respondents were selected using the stratified random sampling technique. The data collected was analysed using both descriptive statistics and structural equation modelling. The findings revealed that gratuity and allowance do positively and significantly influence workers’ motivation whereas salary and pension have no impact on workers’ motivation. Likewise, gratuity and pension do positively and significantly influence workers’ job satisfaction while salary and allowance have no impact on the job satisfaction of workers. Further, gratuity and pension do positively and significantly influence workers’ retention while salary and allowance have no impact on the retention of workers. Moreover, salary, gratuity and pension do positively and significantly influence workers’ attraction while allowance has no influence on the attraction of public construction workers in Jigawa state of Nigeria. Consequently, a framework was developed to reflect the factors that emerged for improving the motivation, job satisfaction, attraction and retention of the and equally address the pay disparity in Jigawa state. 67 respondents who participated in the main study were administered a second questionnaire to validate the framework. The subsequent findings revealed that the framework was relevant and could serve as a guide towards enhancing compensation practices and policies in the Ministry of Works and Transport. Thus, this study and its framework offer important policy recommendation to the Jigawa state government such as introducing new or improving the existing compensation packages of their workers.

Full text
Abstract:
<p> In spite of a decrease globally, the maternal mortality rate (MMR) in Nigeria and its Jigawa State has remained persistently high. Few efforts to address the MMR in Nigeria have been undertaken. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of Jigawa State&rsquo;s Free Maternal and Child Health Program (JSFMCHP), education, employment, and parity of pregnant women on health care utilization (the outcome variable), as measured by antenatal care (ANC) visits. Anderson&rsquo;s behavioral model served as the study&rsquo;s theoretical framework. The sample size included 400 antenatal records of pregnant women who were randomly selected from the state&rsquo;s Health Management and Information data collected between 2011 and 2015. Chi-square tests showed a significant association between those who did not participate in the JSFMCHP, education, employment, with ANC. There was no association between parity and the number of ANC visits. The odds ratio suggested that pregnant women who did not participate in the program were 5.53 times as likely to have 4 or more visits compared to those who participated. Furthermore, the recommended number (4 or more) of ANC visits was predicted by tertiary education and employment. This study&rsquo;s findings indicate the need for a reevaluation of JSFMCHP policy, with a focus on ensuring a minimum recommended number of ANC visits for all program participants. These results can influence positive social change if used by policy makers to strengthen policies that have a beneficial impact on maternal morbidity and mortality in Jigawa State, in particular, and Nigeria, in general.</p><p>

Full text
Abstract:
A college education offers people social and economic benefits, yet youth from foster care backgrounds are less likely than their peers to attain a college education, which places this already vulnerable population at higher risk for a lifetime of living on the margins of society. Foster alumni face multiple obstacles to accessing and persisting in higher education. To facilitate and support the success of this frequently overlooked population, professionals in higher education need to understand these obstacles. Little is known about the experiences of youth with foster care backgrounds as they transition into and through higher education. Although existing research has reported the academic, health, and social effects of having been in foster care, little is known about why foster alumni do not persist in higher education. This study used student-development theory, specifically Schlossberg's transition theory, Tinto's theory of student departure, and Bourdieu's work on social and cultural capital to provide a conceptual framework through which to view the lived experiences of youth with foster care backgrounds. Because, for many youths with foster care backgrounds, the pathway to the baccalaureate degree is through a community college, this study examined and explored the transition experiences of foster alumni about to begin or currently enrolled at an Oregon Community College. The study explored the factors that challenge and facilitate foster alumni persistence towards the attainment of a college degree.

Abstract:
Doctor Educationis<br>The weak routine immunization activities in Nigeria have led to an upsurge of vaccine preventable diseases such as poliomyelitis in the northern parts of the country. This made the federal government to intensify efforts to improve routine immunization activities with various intervention programmes over the years. This commitment of the federal government towards improving routine immunization as a way to promote infant and child survival led to the partnership between the UK Department for International Development (DFID) to support the launching of Partnership for Reviving Routine Immunization in Northern Nigeria (PRRINN) programme in 2006. The programme, implemented in the northern states of Jigawa, Katsina, Yobe, and Zamfara was intended to augment other federal government immunization intervention efforts in improving routine immunizations services. After five years of programme implementation, assessment of the effectiveness of PRRINN had not be undertaken using a survey based immunization coverage to establish how well the primary objectives of the programme are being met in terms of improving routine immunization. This study was designed to evaluate the performance of the PRRINN programme in improving routine immunization coverage in Jigawa State using coverage data from the National Immunization Coverage Survey (NICS) of 2010.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I have presented the search for supersymmetry (SUSY) in Run II data at 13 TeV centre-of-mass energy using the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. SUSY searches are described using the supersymmetric partners of quarks (squarks) and gluons (gluinos). Firstly, prospects and then results are shown for an inclusive search for squark and gluino production in hadronic final states using the Recursive Jigsaw technique of variable construction. This novel method is described and simulation studies illustrate potential sensitivity to SUSY in signatures involving jets and missing transverse momentum. Benchmark points for squark and gluino pair production are studied for models with large mass splittings as well as with compressed spectra.<br>Thesis (Ph.D.) -- University of Adelaide, School of Physical Sciences, 2018

Abstract:
This chapter takes a critical look at the multiple dimensions of water crises in drylands of Sub-Saharan Africa. It argues that urban water crises cannot be explained in isolation of rural areas many of which have competing water needs and are the locations for dams and other critical urban water infrastructure. It uses an example of Kano region – a hydrogeological and geopolitical region of over ten million inhabitants whose lives and livelihoods are vulnerable to climate change. The study draws upon a suite of methods comprising literature review, field-based measurements and observations of wells, as well as information retrieval from people managing wells and those directly affected by water scarcity. Results reveal that basement complex aquifer found mostly in Kano State is the most overexploited compared to Jigawa State's predominantly Chad formation system. It is evident that majority people in basement complex areas travel to a distance of 300-1000m in order to fetch water for their daily use. The current situation of current and future water crises in the region brings to the fore the role of technology, governance, and the need for active private sector participation in planning and management of water resources and services in dry land areas.

Abstract:
This study was carried out at Kiyawa community and aimed at determining tree growth attributes, identifying fungi, bacteria and determining the microbial load in the Neem and Eucalyptus shelterbelt. Data were collected from four temporary sample plots of 30 x 30m each laid at interval of 100 m along a line transect of 500m in length. Also, 1 × 1m subplot was laid within the 30 x 30 m plot and used for soil sample collection. Dbh and total height of all trees were measured using a measuring tape and spigeal relascope while volume and Basal area were calculated using appropriate formula. Potato Dextrose Agar and Nutrient Agar media were used for the isolation of fungi and bacteria. The collected data was analysed using descriptive statistics and t-test. The Neem shelterbelts had the highest Dbh, Basal area, Height, and volume of 82.25cm±1.23, 0.90m2 ±0.15, 15.90m±0.2, 97.08m3 ± 4.27m3 followed by Eucalyptus shelterbeltwhich had the lowest value of 62.50±0.93cm, 0.463±3.43m, 3.75±0.0 3 and3.48±2.43m.The findings revealed the presence of three (3) bacteria species in each study site. Staphyloco ccus aureus and Bacillus cereus were found in the Euca lyptus shelterbelt, while Bacillus subtilis and E. coli we re found in the neem shelterbelt. However, Aspergillus flaming occurred in eucalyptus shelterbelt while Fusarium oxysporum was found in Neem shelterbelt. Result showed that mean microbial load of fungi (Eucalyptus = 1.45x 106 ; Neem = 1.50 x106 ) was higher than that of bacteria (Eucalyptus = 1.24 x 106 ; Neem = 1.3 x106 ). There was significant difference (p≤ 0.05) between the bacterial microbial loads between the two study sites. Thus, the shelterbelt supports growth of neem tree and fungal growth. Therefore, interplanting of tree with arable crops is recommended for improved economic production and enhancement of shelterbelt

Abstract:
This paper proposes a novel pretext task for self-supervised video representation learning by exploiting spatiotemporal continuity in videos. It is motivated by the fact that videos are spatiotemporal by nature and a representation learned by detecting spatiotemporal continuity/discontinuity is thus beneficial for downstream video content analysis tasks. A natural choice of such a pretext task is to construct spatiotemporal (3D) jigsaw puzzles and learn to solve them. However, as we demonstrate in the experiments, this task turns out to be intractable. We thus propose Constrained Spatiotemporal Jigsaw (CSJ) whereby the 3D jigsaws are formed in a constrained manner to ensure that large continuous spatiotemporal cuboids exist. This provides sufficient cues for the model to reason about the continuity. Instead of solving them directly, which could still be extremely hard, we carefully design four surrogate tasks that are more solvable. The four tasks aim to learn representations sensitive to spatiotemporal continuity at both the local and global levels. Extensive experiments show that our CSJ achieves state-of-the-art on various benchmarks.

Abstract:
Multiple development actors are interested in stimulating more inclusive fiscal governance. Efforts to generate greater budget transparency, citizen participation in resource allocation, and public oversight of government spending are commonplace. How can development donors and lenders support such efforts, and what are their limitations? How do their attempts to do so interact? Exploring the outcomes of two projects in the Nigerian States of Jigawa and Kaduna provide some answers to these questions. The projects pursue overlapping goals, but with different approaches. The Partnership to Engage, Reform and Learn (PERL) programme funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth &amp; Development Office works in a granular and contextually adapted way in each state to construct joint government and civil initiatives that test and embed citizen engagement and oversight approaches. The World Bank States Financial Transparency Accountability and Sustainability (SFTAS) initiative offers financial incentives to states if they meet a set of common public financial management benchmarks. Their actions have been complementary in several ways, despite significant contextual differences between the states in terms of conflict dynamics and prevailing citizen–state relations. The projects also reinforced each other’s efforts on public procurement reform in Kaduna State. However, in Jigawa State, SFTAS incentives to pass a procurement law following a standard template failed to codify and may indeed reverse gains from longstanding PERL efforts supporting transparency. This illustrates how donors with similar reform objectives in the same contexts can unconsciously undermine existing efforts towards overarching public accountability goals.
