Abstract:
Trade has always been a traditional topic of study in geography, present in different approaches. In this work, commerce is interpreted from the perspective of technique, approaching the technical phenomenon geographically, that is, through the geographical milieu and its manifestations. This article aims to propose an interpretation of trade through geography from the category of geographical milieu. Based on Milton Santos' proposal for the periodization of geographical space, we relate the natural milieu and exchanges, the technical milieu and traditional commerce, reaching the current period with the emergence of the technical-scientific-informational milieu and its corresponding form of commerce, the e-commerce. Keywords: geographical space; technical-scientific-informational milieu; e-commerce.

Abstract:
The article covers a wide range of relations between the population and the economy through space (their spatial relations). The dynamics of quantitative proportions between the number of inhabitants, the volume of gross product and the size of the territory of the countries of the world and Russian regions are analyzed. Changes in the composition of the economy and population, production and consumption under globalization and post-industrial development, and their geographical effects, are revealed, including those in Russia. It is recognized, in particular, that the geography of society is today less dependent on fixed capital and more on the human capital. A distinction is made between types of activities by their demand for space with its resources and between types of places according to their supply. The role of space as an integrator or disintegrator of social phenomena, in terms of its accessibility is investigated. A review of some issues related to the growth of spatial mobility of people and property, flows and territorial shifts is carried out. The social value of mobility and its role in overcoming spatial barriers is shown.

Abstract:
Historical Cartography along with Historical Toponymy makes it possible to understand the dynamics of geographic space through the occupation process, that is, historical maps contribute to the toponymic study, where geographic names present themselves as testimonies in the process of occupation of a given territory and space dynamics geographical. In this sense, the objective of the present work is to analyze the spatial dynamics regarding the origin of the geographical names of the genesis area of the imperial city of Petrópolis/RJ. For this purpose, it relied on the historical cartographic documents Koeler Map – 1846 and Otto Reimarus Map – 1854, and the cartographic base from 1999. Thus, the geographic names contained in the three referred cartographic documents were extracted and subsequently classified. Results show the prevalence of geographic names of Germanic and Portuguese origin, however, the names of Germanic origin went out of use over time. These geographical names of Germanic origin are closely related to the settlers who established themselves there in the mid-nineteenth century. However, the town was later occupied by, individuals of Portuguese origin, which is also associated with the creation of different entrances to the city and explains the modification of these names. Abstract:
This study aims to analyze and define the appropriate terminology for "small cities," "local cities," "small localities," or "mikripolitan space". To achieve this, one of the methodological procedures was a comprehensive literature review regarding the subject, highlighting key authors of Brazilian geography, such as Pierre Monbeig, Milton Santos, Roberto Lobato Corrêa, Tania Maria Fresca, and Ângela Maria Endlich. The study underscores the lack of available research on these geographical spaces. Monbeig (1957) argued that small cities warrant investigation due to their unique complexity. Santos (2008) also acknowledged the paucity of studies on these cities, accentuating their significance as entities comparable to large cities in developing countries. In Espaço e Método [Space and Method], Santos (2008b [1985]) expounded on how complexity increases as the scale of study diminishes. While Endlich (2017) reported an increase in academic production on small localities, she nonetheless observed that it remains insufficient. Data from the 2022 Demographic Census demonstrated that in 88.01% of Brazilian municipalities the population is less than 50,000, thus reflecting the importance of this topic. In order to exemplify, the study also proposes to analyze the network and the intermediate geographic region of Cascavel in the state of Paraná. Abstract:
Feminism is a multidisciplinary field that addresses women’s issues and interests. The field has extended its focus to cover major aspects of women’s lives rising from society, economy, culture, and politics to geography. Feminist geography examines women’s status, interaction, and significance in a place and space. Leila Slimani’s Adele (2019) is a masterpiece that presents a genuine mode of spatiality where the interconnectedness and interplay between the physical and the digital space navigates gender-related issues. This present article addresses the idea of spatiality in Adele, and how the interconnectedness between the physical, and the digital spaces provides a holistic feminist geographical lens to discuss gender roles, inequality, and social discrimination. The study portrays how the protagonist navigates between the two realms effortlessly while exploring how places and spaces are social and gendered constructions. Initially, the digital place helped Adele to escape from the domestics, the family, and the public space, but digital escapism collapsed as it gave more intricate and complexity to the multithemed feminist issues and mode of spatiality in the narrative. Keywords. Domestic place, digital space, feminist geography, gender roles, interconnectedness, interplay, mode of spatiality, space.

Abstract:
Public spaces are political in nature as they serve as an arena for ideological contestation, for the inhabitants. Public spaces are defined by the social activities of the people. These public spaces also symbolize people’s resistance and state’s hegemony and work as a medium where the two comes in contestation with each other. A public space itself is political, manipulated through planning by different power structures and are often used by ruling regime to exhibit its power over space, in this regard the design and planning activity has been reduced to provide fodder for establishing ideological supremacy of the regime. The research will identify and analyze the transformation of public space by the regime to surveil and to control public activities through the case study of Greater Iqbal Park, which has diverse qualities of urban public spaces for citizen’s political action, as well by the ruling authorities, discussed with reference to the work of Henri Lefebvre, in order to examine the spatial aspects of the relation between state and society. To understand the spatial characteristics, it is important to understand its transformation which can be due to external forces, these forces can be political, economic systems or social and geographical conditions. •It discusses the value of public spaces as space for meeting and interacting between public and focus on inclusivity of public space. Abstract:
The contributions of this paper are the result of a thematic review conducted on some of the most relevant scientific contributions and policy guidelines about women’s perception of safety while walking in public spaces. The first part of the review focused on 23 scientific references revolving around the keywords “gender”, “safety” and “walkability”. This led to the establishment of three main Safety Factors: (i) Spatial Features (space characteristics/morphological features); (ii) City Use (traces of behavior and presence of city users); and (iii) Hotspots (safe havens and no-go areas); further resulting in 19 sub-factors. The second part of the review covered a collection of 20 reports and 10 guidelines focused on diverse geographical scales, areas of interest and target audiences, as well as data collection methods. This involved the selection of multiple case studies, which are also presented, thus maintaining a geographically diverse sample. As part of the scientific research project “STEP UP—Walkability for Women in Milan”, the outputs of the proposed thematic review will be exploited to help identify challenging areas of Milan (Italy), as samples of analysis to develop a set of policy recommendations to enhance the level of walkability for women.

Cropping pattern means the production of area under various crops at a point of time. It is dynamic concept because no cropping pattern can be said to be ideal for all times to a particular region. It changes in space and time with a view to meet requirements and is governed largely by the physical as well as cultural and technological factors. The change in cropping pattern in particular span of time clearly indicates the changes that have taken place in the agricultural development. These changes are brought about by socioeconomic influence. The cropping pattern explain from agriculture crops and changes are analyzed. Two sets of data (2003-2004 and 2017-2018) were taken in this study. Secondary data’s are collected and analyzed by cropping pattern. Abstract:
A fundamental geographical argument is that the irruption of significant economic or technical groupings impacts the rhythm and content of transformations in a preexisting space. These forces affect these spaces and are identified in a temporal perspective of economic cycles. This line of reasoning is undeniable since, in the case of Corumbá-MS, several changes occurred cyclically. Nevertheless, in contrast to a uni-causal explanation and abrupt changes, we defend a socio-spatial perspective based on the idea of coexisting and juxtaposed economic agents and processes, which provoke productive restructuring, whose impact can be sinuous and realign into new functions and ongoing geoeconomic dynamics. Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Comparative Political Theory provides an entry point into this burgeoning field by both synthesizing and challenging the terms that motivate it. The handbook demonstrates how mainstream political theory can and must be enriched through attention to genuinely global, rather than parochially Euro-American, contributions to political thinking. Entries emphasize exploration of substantive questions about political life—ranging from domination to political economy to the politics of knowledge—in a range of global contexts, with attention to whether and how those questions may be shared, contested, or reformulated across differences of time, space, and experience. They connect comparative political theory to cognate disciplines including postcolonial theory, area studies, and comparative politics. Creative organizational tools such as tags and keywords aid in navigation of the handbook to help readers trace disruptions, thematic connections, contrasts, and geographic affinities across entries.

The introduction first explains the relationship of the book to the discourse of the ‘Silk Road’, the western half of which is discussed here. It is differently related to Europe than the eastern one. The ‘music road’ metaphor emphasizes the historical and geographical flux of cultures across this region, justifying the keywords of diversity and yet, coherence in musical developments. The topics covered in the book are then gathered under three cultural paradigms: mobility, transmission in time, East–West imagination. The last-named is proposed as a more sensitive term for attitudes formerly subsumed under ‘orientalism’. An extended survey of the topic of all individual chapters reveals many different forms of transfers, connections, bridges and also disruptions in the musics of this special world region.

Abstract:
Abstract: This article aims to demonstrate the reasons why there is an increase in requests for mining blockades made to the National Mining Agency (ANS) - which have a legal basis in Art. 42 of the Brazilian Mining Code - as well as identifying who should bear the possible losses resulting from compensation to mining companies, if these blocking requests are accepted by the regulatory agency. With the growth of wind and photovoltaic energy generation in the Brazilian energy matrix, several conflicts have arisen between mining companies - which have obtained titles for research permits, mining concessions, and the like, in specific polygonal areas due to the locational rigidity inherent to mining activity - and energy generators and transmitters, who have emerged as winners in auctions held by the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL). The uproar is that mining and energy generation and transmission activities have been authorized, in several situations, in the same geographic space, which is the reason for the impasses. Certainly, such situations need to be faced and resolved; however, given the same constitutional level that exists between mining and energy activities, the current solution boils down to the rule inserted in Art. 42 of the aforementioned Mining Code, supported by an opinion issued by the Federal Attorney General's Office. The objective of this study, therefore, was to identify whether there is systematization that can prevent the growing number of requests for mining blockades and whether there is regulation capable of resolving the problem. The method used was dialectical, with bibliographical, exploratory, and applied research techniques, of a qualitative nature. It was concluded, after immersion, that an interconnection between ANS and ANEEL is necessary when carrying out relevant technical studies to authorize each activity, aiming to avoid new situations, as well as that the impasses created by the aforementioned regulatory agencies attract, within the scope of the Brazilian legal system, the obligation of the Federal Union to bear the economic losses caused. Keywords: mining blockade; energymatrix; need for systematization and standardization.

Abstract:
Urban and geographical imaginaries seem to be bearers of the local elite’s cultural ideologies in their search to organize territories. During the 19th century, the Chilean state began a territorial occupation process in Araucania under a civilizing ideal and an empty conception of space, using a group of actions linked by the railroad. These matters were at the base of the Nation-State’s consolidation (Pinto, 2003). The research questions the insistence to evoke railroad elements in the design of public spaces during different temporalities, and in return, to reflect on remembering the elements of Mapuche culture as a response to the imposition of hegemonic urban imaginaries. This work, from a quantitative approach, has the purpose of comparatively analyzing public spaces in Araucania’s coastal and mountain cities and examining their contextual imaginaries. Abstract:
Studies of childhood geography reflect the significance of place and space of childhood. It is inseparable from the geography of the child, the main actor of childhood. The geographies of childhood are primarily focused on the way adult society shapes childhood, whereas the children’s geography is more concerned with their experiences. In order to analyse and identify the framework and tendencies of contemporary geographies of children, the author formulates the following questions: 1) What research methods have been applied to research the geographies of children? 2) Which factors define the ‘map’ of geographies of contemporary children in the context of education? To identify the spatial and time frame of geographies of contemporary children and to answer the stated questions, the following criteria were set for the scoping review: the Web of Science database was chosen and open access articles in English with the period 2019–2023 were selected using the keywords “geographies of children” in the category “Education; Educational Research”. A selection of 47 articles was made of which 19 were analysed as relevant to the focus of this scoping review. Public and private narratives of geographies of contemporary children are intertwined, driving geographies of children from the micro to the macro level. The promoters of geographies of children in educational contexts identified in the review are largely socio-geographical, with human rights as an important feature of geographies of children, since a significant amount of research focuses on the geographies of children from marginalised groups.

Abstract:
The state of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil, presents a peculiar urban structure when compared to the national context. Presenting several geographical, cultural and social conditions, it brings together cities that express varied urban fabrics, sometimes with very dispersed and segregated configurations, sometimes very reticulated and integrated. In this opportunity we bring to study Blumenau, a city that expresses the first characteristic, and Chapecó, a municipality representing the second situation. Different centralities have emerged and transformed in these contexts, directly influencing the use and experience of urban space. Based on this observation, we compared the structure of these two medium-sized cities identifying attributes of urban centralities through formal, functional and historical aspects. To assist in the analysis of the distinct centralities, we bring as an important methodological contribution the studies by Holanda et al. (2015) and the Spatial Syntax theory, developed by Hillier and Hanson (1984). The results found point to a strong correlation of the configurational structure with the network of centralities present in both cities analyzed, revealing places with greater or lesser possibility of gathering urban qualities and expressing diversity, attendance and quantity of people in urban space. Abstract:
The social construction of public space has become important since the mid-20th century. Several interdisciplinary scenarios have been used to argue the physical and social destruction of cities around the world as a result of traditional urbanization models inspired by capitalism. The model is challenged and methods for humanizing the city are suggested. This article presents some reflections that come from the doctoral research project of the same name, which examines new social action-production strategies of public spaces at the microscale, including tactical urbanism, its mode of operation, the socio-spatial variables it produces, and the model's scalability. To reinforce the idealistic foundations of the urban movements that promote these modern collaborative practices, a bibliographic review of several influential classic theorists is performed. Two case studies are presented in the South American context (geographical segment of the research), in which the tools and elements of tactical interventions are evaluated and some of the conclusions that have been defined in the PhD work are acknowledged. Keywords: tactical urbanism, convergent urbanism, human scale, right to the city. Alessandro Camiz ¹ ¹ Department of Architecture, Girne American University, Cyprus, Association for Historical Dialogue and Research, Home for Cooperation (H4C), 28 Marcou Dracou Street, Nicosia, Cyprus, 1102. E-mail: alessandrocamiz@gau.edu.tr Keywords (3-5): urban tissues, urban morphology, urban routes, theory, history Conference topics and scale: Tools of analysis in urban morphology Recent urban morphology studies consider urban tissues as living organisms changing in time (Strappa, Carlotti, Camiz, 2016), following this assumption the theory should examine more analytically what Muratori called ‘medievalisation’ (Muratori, 1959), a term describing some of the transformations of urban routes happened in the middle ages. The paper considers the diachronic deformation of routes, and other multi-scalar occurrences of the attraction phenomena (Charalambous, Geddes, 2015), introducing the notion of attractors and repellers. Archaeological studies already do consider attractors and repellers as a tool to interpret some territorial transformations, following the assumption that “the trajectory that a system follows through time is the result of a continuous dynamic interaction between that system and the multiple 'attractors' in its environment” (Renfrew, Bahn, 2013, p. 184). There are different elements that can act as attractors in an urban environment, such as bridges, city walls, city gates, water systems, markets, special buildings, and it is possible to consider each of these anthropic attractors as equivalent to a morphological attractor at the geographical scale. We can even interpret the ridge-top theory (Caniggia, 1976) as the result of attraction and repellence of geographic features on anthropic routes. The territorial scale analysis is the methodological base of the theory, but the attractors herein considered operate at the urban scale, deviating locally across time from a rectilinear trajectory and defining a specific urban fabric. The research interprets and reads the effects of attractors on urban routes and fabrics as a method for the reconstruction of Nicosia’s medieval city walls, in continuity between the Conzenian approach (Whitehand, 2012) and the Italian School of Urban Morphology (Marzot, 2002). José Antonio Vivanco Viladot The Bartlett School of Planning, University College of London, Central House, 14 Upper Woburn Place, WC1H 0NN, London. E-mail: jose.viladot.15@ucl.ac.uk Keywords: Quito, Ecuador, Social Practice Theory, Transport behavior, Cycling Conference topics and scale: Urban form and social use of space In Quito, the relatively recent development of infrastructure and programs to promote cycling has become central in the discussion for sustainable mobility[1]. Moreover, considering that the scheme ‘Ciclopaseo’ has been an important dominical event for many families over a decade, if compared with the low rates of cycling in the modal share, questions surge about the effectiveness of all these measures. Moreover, the appropriateness of cycling in a city with geographical, morphological, social, and cultural challenges for practitioners has been analysed. The use of Social Practice Theory[2] provides a theoretical framework to understand holistically the daily mobility of two groups: a representative sample composed by University students, gives a specific target for policy making; while a parallel sample puts into perspective the validity of the results. SSPS and ArcGIS are used for the analysis of primary data collected with Google Forms. Overall, the analysis of each one of the elements of practice explains a dimension of the self-reinforcing barriers to cycle. It is revealed that the construction of meanings in daily travel, especially cycling, is based on instrumental factors such as travel time and distance, but non-instrumental factors related to safeness and security weigh heavily in travel behaviour, creating psychological barriers to cycling. It is concluded that reshaping the meanings of cycling is necessary by the construction of a culture of ‘road user behaviour’, the creation of physic-temporal-symbolic spaces to build cycling skills, and later transform the transport system, road infrastructure, streetscape, and the social rhythms of Quito into cycle-friendly spaces. Abstract:
The most crowded space for collective use in contemporary times is the shopping mall: large buildings dedicated to the consumption of goods that have changed urban dynamics and have had, among other consequences, the partial substitution of local commerce and public space. Their rules of composition are almost invariable: a hermetic volume that facilitates a controlled environment with artificial conditions of lighting, acclimatization and security. We present an analysis of the architecture of shopping centers and their urban relations in the metropolitan area of the city of Medellin (Colombia), a region that is transforming its economic vocation, favoring deindustrialization and turning shopping centers into service and leisure nodes. Through questions such as: What is the urban impact of these infrastructures; what are their design characteristics; what geographical, climatic, social, regulatory and economic parameters are taken into account in their design; and through the comparative method, we seek to understand the typological characteristics, urban implantation and internal composition of the shopping centers. With indicators and evidence on the ways of designing shopping centers and their relationship with this specific urban environment, it is concluded that, despite the genericity of shopping centers, local conditions affect their composition. Keywords: Shopping malls, Generic, Latin America, Urban. Abstract:
The morphological approach in the reading of the Territorial City Maria Gagliardi Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona, UPC. Av. Diagonal, 649. 08028 Barcelona E-mail: bissolati27@hotmail.it Keywords (3-5): Territorial city, territorial grid, accumulation process, relief of innovative elements. Conference topics and scale: City transformations The crisis of the traditional city, with its morphological characteristics, has been largely debated. The new urban phenomenon has almost always been described as antithetical; by contrary this article interrogates the possibility of reading a continuity between the traditional and the contemporary city. The article brings forth the concept that the territory can be described as an urban phenomenon result of a change of scale of the city, and offers the definition of the contemporary city as Territorial City (Città-Territorio). The article recovers this term introduced in the 70’s by the Italian morphological school, to emphasize the continuity with the European traditional morphological schools, taking advantage of its learnings, to compare the traditional city, with the contemporary city. The relevance of a morphological approach in the study of the contemporary Territorial City is discussed through an excursus of the main European schools’ contributions, with a particular schematization due to geographical areas. From the synthesis of these references emerges a basis for the definition of a Taxonomy organised around tree main elements that constitute the urban grid. Moreover, the article proposes a methodology for the analysis of the Territorial City that use the Taxonomy as reading tool; this method, illustrated through his experimentation on the Metropolitan Region of Barcelona, is of particular relevance towards the interpretation of the dynamics that have characterised the morphology of the current urban phenomenon, describing its aggregation logics and decomposing the historical-procedural continuum. Abstract:
The lighting design in workplace environments involves/demands multidisciplinary knowledge; however, the principle that supports its conception is repeatedly grounded on aesthetical considerations and technical requirements rather than on comfort and inclusive solutions. Besides legislation it is important to observe how people work and the requirements and expectations felt by individuals according to the tools used, spatial layout, geographical orientation, windows area and the reflectance of the surfaces. Natural light aims to illuminate working plans while it is a crucial factor to manage human circadian cycle and mood. Contemporaneous workplace concept is changing to respond to economic pressure and technical improvements. Coworking spaces require a deep understanding as they shelter people from different professional, cultural and social backgrounds with different gender and age issues. Anthropometric and ergonomic concepts are fundamental for a healthy and comfortable environ in which lighting design emerge and deserve special attention. This piece of research aims to study the “do´s and don’ts” of lighting design in a workplace layout in a way that it becomes useful for future humanised planning of coworking environments. In order to achieve such goals this research will be conducted throughout literature review stemming from elected keywords and the analysis of two case studies: Lx CoWorking and Ávila CoWorking, in Lisbon.

Abstract:
The term “walkability”, is linked with the new society yearnings to make cities into more sustainable, for the benefit of people and providing more pleasant and inviting urban environments for pedestrians, with guaranteed safety and accessibility conditions. This research started with the recognition of the mobility conditions and infrastructure of the public space, with a main focus on the analysis of sidewalks and crossings of roads and the fulfillment of pedestrian criteria. Subsequently, a geographic area was delimited, in this case the immediate surroundings of a university. The chosen place prioritized a space of urban dynamism, from a large equipment that works as an inducer of growth, densification and traffic generator, in addition, promoting pedestrian traffic. For this territorial cut, the Walkability Index was applied, a tool developed by the Institute of Transport and Development Policies (ITDP Brazil), aiming to measure the characteristics of the urban environment and evaluate them in their relevance to favor displacements on foot. Keywords: Walkability Index, public space, sidewalks, urban infrastructure.

Abstract:
The 2024 European Parliament (EP) election in Greece was held against a background of geopolitical instability in Europe’s neighbourhood. However, domestic – rather than European – issues dominated the campaigns, including the economy, inflation and the cost-of-living crisis. The electoral results were primarily an anti-government protest vote and confirmed a trend of electoral fragmentation across the political spectrum. On the right, three relatively new far-right populist parties received parliamentary representation, i.e., the Greek Solution, Victory and the Voice of Reason. On the left, SYRIZA–PA maintained its second place, although its support declined substantively compared to the previous EP election. Course of Freedom and the KKE, on the other hand, were key electoral beneficiaries in the left-wing space. Younger age groups primarily opted for SYRIZA–PA, whereas older groups were more likely to support New Democracy. That said, far-right parties also received votes from younger generations. Geographically, the far right is more successful in the north of Greece. The key message of this election was political discontent and a general feeling of economic malaise posing dilemmas across the political spectrum.
