Abstract:
Tulokset rajoittuvat melko suuresti autoteollisuuteen, mutta esimerkiksi vääntöjäykkyyden ja vääntävän vivun pituuden suhdetta voidaan hyödyntää laajasti<br>The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to document the procedure of designing new anti-roll bars to a Formula Student race car and to determine some of the fundamental roll-related properties of the vehicle. These properties include among others the roll stiffness of the vehicle and the contribution of the anti-roll bar to the overall roll stiffness. A major portion of the applied theory has been gathered from subject-related literature, and the mechanical properties of the anti-roll bar originate from the fundamental formulas of engineering mechanics. The design revolved mostly around CAD and comparing the properties of the new anti-roll bar to those of the old one. The resulting anti-roll bar is in many ways like the previous version, only a bit lighter and more practical. During the writing phase the relationships between the physical dimensions of the anti-roll bar and its stiffness and durability became evident. The results of this thesis are mostly limited to the automotive industry, but for instance the relationship between the length of the lever arm and the stiffness of a torsion bar can be widely utilized

Abstract:
Within the selected corpus, our specific objectives are: a) to analyze the poems, taking into account their historical and literary context; b) analyze the sound and expressive aspects into phonemes, words and statements; c) analyze some poetic musical relations, aiming to collaborate with interpretive questions. The work is justified by the fact that we not have found others who address the Stylistics or even phonostylistics, as a subsidy to develop, analyze or assist interpretative issues in vocal works. As methodology, we chose the analysis of the poems, focusing on phonostylistics, observing some sound and expressive resources. The interpretative suggestions were developed from the interaction between phonostylistics and music. This result was obtained because both (phonostylistics and music) explore the relationship between sound and meaning and can thus contribute to the development of interpretative suggestions.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the early development of parasitism in a wild population of Soay sheep on the Scottish island group of St. Kilda. The research used statistical analysis and modelling of a detailed data set collected over a year of field based study. The outcome is a comprehensive description of the epidemiology of nematode parasitism in young animals from a wild ungulate population. An immuno-epidemiological model is used to explore the dynamics of acquired protective immunity against parasites in early infection. The model predicts early male/female differences in immunocompetence. The model also allows estimation of the relationship between weight, age, and infection rate for males and females. It shows that as lambs get older, net infection increases in males, as immunity becomes more important in females. The predictions of the model suggest that differences in immunity between hosts drive the patterns of aggregation observed in the system. Significant intermediate-scale spatial heterogeneity in early parasitism on St. Kilda is demonstrated. Lambs from three hefts, which frequent three distinct parts of the study area, are shown to have significantly different mean faecal egg counts (p<0.001). An attempt is made to tease out the causes of the observed heterogeneities, but further empirical research is required before firm conclusions may be drawn. It is established that such intermediate -scale spatial heterogeneity is not the cause of the high levels of parasite aggregation observed in the system. The implications of parasitism for over-winter survival in lambs are explored.

Como resultado deste trabalho é oferecido ao final da pesquisa uma nova edição revisada para performance da partitura da Missa Caiçara, possibilitando melhor divulgação da obra.<br>The purpose is to analyze the Caiçaras mass and to recognize the compositional processes used by Kilza Setti in this composition, by demonstrating how traditional European musical procedures were blended with caiçaras musical procedures, creating reference material on the composer\'s compositional characteristics. Dicks, Kara Leanne. "Unravelling major histocompatibility complex diversity in the Soay sheep of St Kilda." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31412.

Full text
Abstract:
The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is one of the most variable regions in the vertebrate genome. Many genes within the MHC play important roles in the development of an immune response, including the response to pathogens, by presenting pathogen fragments to T cells. Pathogen-mediated balancing selection is thought to be important in maintaining the high levels of allelic variation at these loci, though the precise mechanism remains unclear. The number of studies of MHC diversity in non-model organisms has increased dramatically in recent years as genotype data have become cheaper and easier to generate; however, key limitations in many such studies remain a lack of high quality MHC genotypes and associated phenotype data. Many studies focus on a single MHC locus, assuming that one locus will represent the full range of variation within each MHC haplotype. Alternatively, the products of different loci may co-amplify, preventing locus-specific genotypes and hence heterozygosity being accurately determined. Non-model systems are also often limited by small sample sizes and limited recording of associated host and pathogen measures, which, combined with high levels of allelic variation at MHC loci, can limit statistical power. Finally, few MHC studies control for the general effect of relatedness in explaining host traits before testing for MHC effects. With so many methodological impediments, it is challenging to identify robust associations between MHC variation and host phenotypes, such as parasite burden or fitness, and to draw conclusions about the mechanisms underpinning the maintenance of diversity at MHC loci. In this thesis, I address these problems by developing a SNP-based haplotyping system for a population of unmanaged Soay sheep (Ovis aries) on Hirta, St. Kilda, for which data is available on pedigree, phenotypic traits and fitness and its components over a 30- year study period. The ovine MHC consists of four classes of loci, within which loci are tightly clustered and show reduced recombination rates compared to the genome average. Although the mammalian MHC is usually highly variable, one would expect that the number of haplotypes within an MHC class in an island population of sheep with no immigration to be limited. The class IIa region of the ovine MHC includes the classical class II loci which are typically thought to be involved in the presentation of peptides derived from extracellular pathogens, including gastrointestinal helminths, in sheep and other mammals. In chapters 2 to 4, I describe the characterisation of class IIa haplotypic diversity in the Soay sheep using direct Sanger sequencing of PCR amplified fragments, which, in combination with cloning, revealed eight distinct haplotypes. With this knowledge of haplotypic diversity, and genotypes for a sample of Soay sheep typed on the Ovine Infinium HD chip (approximately 600K SNPs), I developed a panel of 13 SNPs which could be used to impute the class IIa haplotypes. This panel was genotyped by KASP (Kompetitive Allele Specific PCR) in 6034 samples and used to impute the class IIa haplotypes. After quality control measures, class IIa haplotypes were successfully imputed for 5349 individuals. Evidence of balancing selection was identified using the Ewens-Watterson test at different life history stages and within the standing population each year between 1985 and 2012, showing that allele frequencies were more even than would be expected under neutrality. However, there was no evidence of deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium identified at different life stages or in the standing population in any year. In chapter 5, I investigate associations between the MHC class IIa haplotypes and individual-level data on host phenotypes - body weight, plasma immunoglobulin levels (measured as anti-Teladorsagia circumcincta third larval stage IgA, IgE and IgG) and strongyle faecal egg counts (FEC). Associations were tested within mixed effects models which were used to account for repeated measures and control for fixed effects known to affect the response variables, as well as within an animal model framework to account for relatedness between individuals. Haplotype heterozygosity was unrelated to any of the traits investigated, suggesting a general heterozygote advantage is unlikely to be operating within the Soay sheep. Six of the eight class IIa haplotypes were associated with multiple traits in different age-sex classes, although many of these associations were removed after inclusion within animal models. The evidence of balancing selection and associations between class IIa haplotypes and phenotypes related to health offers a promising glimpse into the evolutionary mechanisms which may be operating to maintain diversity within this region.

Title: Fashion Killa: A study on teenager’s attitudes towards luxury fashion clothing brands. Bachelor Thesis 15HP in Business Economics (Marketing) Halmstad University School of Business, Engineering and Science  Supervisor: Thomas Helgesson Examiner: Venilton Reinert Purpose: The purpose of this essay is to examine the underlying factors that affect teenager’s attitudes towards luxury fashion clothing brands. Research question: What are the underlying factors that affects the attitudes of teenager ́s towards luxury fashion clothing brands? Literature review: The literature review introduces the theories and previous findings regarding the underlying factors that can be connected to our research question and explanation on the chosen generations as this study is supposed to relate to. Frame of reference: In these sections, our main investigation topic will be explained briefly what literatures explain and approach this matter. Our investigation topic “attitudes” have a meaningful role in this paper and it is defined in these sections as well is our choice of model. In the end of this chapter, we present our hypothesis which is based on our chosen model. Method: Based on the literature review and frame of reference a quantitative study was created where 408 Swedish respondents within the generation Z participated. Empirical findings: The survey consisted of 25 statements and questions as regard to our theories and could easily be connected to our chosen model. A Likert-scale from 1-5 was used so the respondents easy could fill in on what level they agreed or disagreed to. Conclusion: The conclusion on this study is that affect which are one of the three components that builds up attitudes. It is the component that positively influence teenagers the most. We can also see that social media have a great positive impact on their attitudes followed by luxury marketing and psychological benefits.

Maahlamela, Tebogo David. "Sepedi oral poetry with reference to kiba traditional dance of South Africa." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/63209.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous studies show that contrary to other African languages of fewer speakers, written poetry in Sepedi/Sesotho sa Leboa’s transition from oral to written did not only lag behind, its development was also slow, with less intense treatment. However, this scarcity is not of the actual oral material, but rather its documented version. Vast untreated material at various repositories such as the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) library and the International Library of African Music (ILAM) are facing a risk of being lost due to limited resources and resourcefulness to digitalise them. Investigation of written poetry from 1906 to 2006 attests to the fact that in its written form, Sepedi/Sesotho sa Leboa poetry is still underdeveloped, dominated by “microwaved” collections aiming at nothing beyond meeting school prescription criteria. Calls have been made from the dominant South African poetry narrative that there are no innovative studies in the field of African languages, especially Sepedi/Sesotho sa Leboa. Musicological studies show that contemporary jazz artists have adopted and adapted kiba poetry into jazz music, which resulted into classics of all times. Intensive studies were conducted on such poetic kiba-influenced jazz, but the primary source remains a grey area. The analysis of selected kiba poems shows that kiba poetry is the richest poetic form in the Sepedi/Sesotho sa Leboa with its creative and artistic merit exceeds all other genres. The study further reveals that kiba poetry is the heart of Bapedi/Basotho ba Leboa spirituality, a heart without which some faith institutions will remain incomplete. Furthermore, kiba poetry embodies, among others, poetic genres rarely explored in the South African poetry milieu such as “sound poetry” and poetry of special metrical schemes, of dramatic and devotional essence. Scholarly attention is, therefore, recommended on this repertoire to explore the field beyond this preliminary study, so as to save as many kiba poems as possible, which will enrich the dwindling written poetry milieu. Literary excellence of the treated poems attests to the fact that the artistic wealth of kiba poetry is worthy of attention, and it has potential to transform not only the face of poetry in Sepedi/Sesotho sa Leboa, but of the entire South African poetry landscape.

Miles, William Thomas Stead. "Ecology, behaviour and predator-prey interactions of Great Skuas and Leach's Storm-petrels at St Kilda." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2010. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/2297/.

Full text
Abstract:
At the St Kilda archipelago, Outer Hebrides, declines have been recorded in the Leach's Storm-petrel breeding population, the largest in Britain and Ireland, and rapid increases in the population of Great Skuas. Leach's Storm-petrels have frequently been found in the diet of Great Skuas at St Kilda, where storm-petrels are active on land only at night and, unusually, skuas often hunt after dark. Apparent severe skua predation of Leach's Storm-petrels has raised conservation concerns regarding the sustainability of the St Kilda Leach's Storm-petrel population. However, it was recognised that this particular predator-prey relationship is a globally rare phenomenon, had not previously been studied for long at St Kilda (and never elsewhere), and warranted further research before conservation management interventions could be considered. Additionally, research on Leach's Storm-petrels was desirable in its own right, because the species had rarely been studied in the UK, due to its highly pelagic lifestyle and very remote breeding locations. The aim of this study was to increase our understanding of the ecology, behaviour and predator-prey interactions of Great Skuas and Leach's Storm-petrels at St Kilda. Results showed that Great Skua predation of Leach's Storm-petrels was considerable and sustained. Estimated numbers of Leach's Storm-petrels consumed annually by skuas were variable but averaged approximately 21,000 individuals per year. There was strong evidence from storm-petrel ringing and behavioural observations conducted at night that skuas fed predominantly on non-breeding Leach's Storm-petrels, which likely visit the archipelago in very large numbers each year, from huge colonies elsewhere, and probably play and important role in reducing impacts on the breeding population at St Kilda. It was found that Leach's Storm-petrels did not exhibit any specialised counter-predator adaptations to Great Skuas, and were very easily captured at night on the surface of the breeding colonies by skuas on foot. However, prey specialisation by skuas on nocturnally active seabirds (predominantly storm-petrels) did not create fitness advantages over prey specialisation on diurnally active seabirds or fish. Leach's Storm-petrel specialist skua pairs were very few and all pairs exhibited a tendency to feed on a diversity of prey and to switch prey-types between years. Adult and juvenile Leach's Storm-petrels were highly sensitive to light, and artificial light reduction measures in autumn helped prevent storm-petrel attractions and mortality in the village on Hirta. The St Kilda Great Skua population was found to be declining slightly, in contrast to the exponential growth recorded between 1990 and 2000, and Leach's Storm-petrel conservation issues now appear less severe than had been expected.

Abstract:
In changing world of e-commerce and internet based communication, business transactions and data flows play a key role in successful business management. It is vital for companies’ information systems to implement business transactions. The purpose of this work is to propose a model for outside business process’ implementation. Basic models’ steps are: business transaction specification, data structure and architectural solution selection. Communicative action loop is proposed for modeling business processes and XML is suggested as the best method for data exchange in an internet based environment. Deploying three-tier architecture completes the models’ steps for successful business information system implementation. In this work we propose a multipurpose tool – DAO (Data Abstraction Object), based on PHP to control, manage and save XML document data. A PHP alternative way – Java Servlet technology is also discussed for using Java tools for XML processing and database connection. At the end of the work an example information system is implemented following the steps described above.

Abstract:

Bicknell, Anthony William James. "Population structuring and dispersal in the highly pelagic Leach's storm-petrel : implications for the EU population." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/814.

Full text
Abstract:
Dispersal is a fundamental process that shapes many aspects of population ecology and evolution. Dramatic local population declines brought about by anthropogenic-driven changes to ecological processes are unfortunately becoming ubiquitous and increasing the urgency to understand dispersal behaviour in many species. For species where direct methods of tracking movement and dispersal are unsuitable, other indirect methods need to be employed to understand and characterise these behaviours. The steep population decline, due to predation, at the largest EU population of Leach’s storm-petrels Oceanodroma leucorhoa (St Kilda, Scotland), and the potential part immigrant birds have in buffering this threat, highlighted the need to understand dispersal and connectivity of widely spaced colonies in this species. The implications for the persistence of local colonies and the wider population of Leach’s storm-petrels could then be assessed. A population genetic analysis of 9 colonies across the North Pacific and Atlantic distribution, using two DNA markers (mtDNA control region and microsatellites), revealed ocean basin differentiation (Global ST = 0.32 P <0.0001, Global FST = 0.04, P <0.0001) but also identified a migrant individual in the Pacific population (STRUCTURE migrant assignment). The Atlantic population was found to be genetically homogenous, with patterns of historical and contemporary gene flow, indicating that long-distance effective dispersal is prevalent in Leach’s storm-petrels within the ocean basin. Bayesian stable isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen (13C & 15N) provides evidence for natal dispersal as an important dispersal mechanism, and reveals movement of immature birds between colonies during the breeding season as a likely mechanism to promote inter-colony exchange and gene flow. Stable isotope comparison also identified mixing on wintering grounds as another possible influence on dispersal. The potential for immigrant birds to offset the loss caused by predation at the St Kilda colony is supported by these studies, and will likely help the persistence of the colony in the short-term. However, future viability is debateable considering the evidence for both avian and mammalian predation. This research provides a better understanding of the extent and mechanism of dispersal in the Leach’s storm-petrel, which is important to predict the potential impact of environmental change and, where possible, implement effective population management for this species.

The analysis of migratory routes of these species in the Western Palearctic based on literature analysis is presented. Ringing recoveries maps of duck species ringed in Lithuania and found in foreign countries, or ringed in foreign countries and recovered in Lithuania, were produced by means of analysis of all available long-term data collected in the Lithuanian Bird Ringing Centre. The direct ringing recoveries maps were produced for most common in Lithuania duck species. Particularly informative ringing recoveries maps, produced by means of analysis of large number of long-term recoveries, were provided for Mallard, Tufted Duck, Pochard and certain other species wintering mainly in Europe. For long-distance migrants (Shoveler, Pintail and Garganey) ringing recoveries available in Lithuania reflect only staging sites of these species, as there are almost no recoveries available from their key wintering sites located in Africa. In changing world of computerized information systems modeling of business transactions plays an important role. Business transaction can be defined as extended communicative action loop. Using such approach, business processes and new functional requirements may be represented as choreographed sets of extended communicative action loops with established pragmatic and semantic dependencies. In general case, a computerized information system may be of hybrid nature, that is, it may consist of different versions and types of databases. XML streams’ formatting in hybrid information system is discussed in this paper.

Rowe, Keri. "Elevating the Other: A Theoretical Approach to Alexander McQueen." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2015. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4394.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationship between art and fashion in order to first, justify fashion as an art form, and second, demonstrate the applicability of critical theory to the study of fashion through an examination of Alexander McQueen's Spring/Summer 2006 menswear collection, titled “Killa,” presented in Milan, Italy, in 2005. “Killa,” loosely based on William Golding's 1954 novel Lord of the Flies and its 1963 film adaptation, opens with crisp, white, tailored suits worn by neatly groomed models. Steadily throughout the collection, these tailored suits are exchanged for wide-legged, cropped shorts, and tanks in browns and beiges. By the end, models appear on the runway with painted faces, wild hair, and highly patterned, dark-colored body suits and billowing capes. While “Killa” appears to demonstrate the narrative regression from civilized to savage demonstrated in Golding's novel, this thesis argues that McQueen's collection actually strives to promote a more positive ennobling of the Other. A careful study of his life and career suggests that McQueen perceived himself as the Other within the community in which he worked and lived. Frustrated by frequent misinterpretations of his work and false accusations of his character, “Killa” becomes McQueen's ultimate confrontation with Otherness. Positioning the Other at the climax of an elite fashion show, represented by Mesoamerican designs depicted through the highest quality tailoring, McQueen's Other is respected and revered, rather than looked down upon. In this way, McQueen challenges the perception of his own character within the fashion community. Ultimately this thesis seeks to demonstrate the necessity of the application of critical theory to objects of fashion. As demonstrated through the case study of McQueen's 2006 menswear collection, this academic consideration has the potential to reveal important overlooked meanings within the art of fashion. This suggests that McQueen's work, as well as the work of other contemporary fashion designers, merits more thoughtful and careful interpretation in the study of postmodern art history.

McClory, Dunbar Helen Laura. "Kilea and a critical, reflective essay on Virginia Woolf's The Common Reader and To The Lighthouse, James Joyce's Ulysses and Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2010. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1425/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis consists of two parts: a creative work and a reflective, critical essay. The creative work is a novel, entitled Kilea after the central character, who is a young girl brought to a Scottish island by a man she calls Father. The girl is haunted by visions of spirits, called ‘schie’, and by their music, by her feelings of being an outsider, and by a metaphysical confusion and anxiety that grows as she develops. Kilea was originally modelled on Heliodorus’ the Aethiopika, a work of late Hellenistic fiction. However, while writing the chapters which make up the second part of this thesis, I came to realise that the plot of the older novel was not sympathetic with the aims and style I wished to bring to my work, and that my narrative could not follow a journey as the other had; it required to be located in one place only. A singular setting required an increase in detail, an awareness of landscape and how it can be salted with levels of meaning that enliven the language and support characterisation. The introduction and first chapter of the critical essay lay out the struggle to come to grips with the Aethiopika, and the usefulness of Virginia Woolf’s theories of cultural translation in ‘On Not Knowing Greek’, an essay in her The Common Reader, as well as how and why Woolf enacted the transmutation of setting in To the Lighthouse from a nostalgia-tainted Cornwall to a neutral, but unfamiliar place, Skye. Chapter Two addresses James Joyce’s Ulysses in a similar vein, though the style of this chapter is impersonal, lacking the ‘I’ of the rest of the critical essay. This decision was made to reflect the analytical, less personally reflective approach towards Joyce’s cultural reshift of the Odyssey from the Mediterranean to a time-specific, linguistically energised Dublin. The last chapter examines Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea through the lens of feminism, with an awareness of Rhys’s antagonistic views of ‘Women’s Lib’. It notes how fate and foreknowledge of fate imbue the characters of the novel with a heaviness and fatality regardless of their gender. This is compared with Kilea, in which I wished to leave open a sense of possibility, in terms of the turns of plot, the physical qualities of the landscape and the presence, or imagined presence of the dead.

Black, Thomas William. "Ecology of an island mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus hirtensis." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/20411.

Full text
Abstract:
An island subspecies endemic to the remote St Kilda archipelago, Apodemus sylvaticus hirtensis is considered of national importance but has been little studied, despite its inclusion in the criteria for the islands’ designation as a World Heritage Site. This study expands our knowledge of the core ecology of the mice; distribution, morphology, age structure, breeding phenology, population density, range size, survival and fecundity are all described and quantified using data collected from 4462 captures of 787 individuals between 2009-2012 on three sites (Carn Mor, Glen Bay & Village Bay), 1-2km apart on the main island of Hirta. Morphological analysis confirmed the reputed gigantism the mice, with maximum body weights of 60g for males and 50.5g for a non-gravid female both being approximately double that of a mainland specimen (the heaviest gravid female caught weighed 56g). Sexual dimorphism was evident, with males >1 year old being 8.7% heavier than females on average. Significant geographical variation in size was also found; mice on the seabird breeding colony of Carn Mor were heavier, longer and in better condition than mice elsewhere. Mice were observed to have a well-defined breeding season between April and September, shorter than on the mainland, with most individuals not breeding until their second year and very few surviving two winters. No geographical differences were found in the proportion of adult mice more than a year old that were in breeding condition at any given time, although there were significant geographical differences in the proportion of individuals in breeding condition for ‘young adult’ mice entering their first spring and sub adult mice in the autumn of the year in which they were. Spatially explicit capture-recapture (SECR) methods were used to quantify population densities free from ad hoc methods of trapping area estimation. Temporal variation in population size typical of temperate small mammals was found, with densities as low as 2 mice/ha in spring, increasing through summer and autumn with juvenile recruitment until reaching a peak at the beginning of winter of up to 50 mice/ha. Geographical variation was again observed, with frequent significant differences between trapping sites and an overall trend of highest population densities on the seabird breeding site. Mean individual range sizes varied between 0.3-3.0ha and were largest in Village Bay and in males in breeding condition. Pradel robust design recruitment models were used to quantify monthly survival (0.67-1.00) and fecundity (0.03- 0.41) and overall rate of population change (0.81-1.52) between sessions. Survival varied little between grids outside of the breeding season, but tended to be greater in Carn Mor than Village Bay during the summer. Fecundity rates varied little between years and grids, with one exception where increased summer fecundity followed a severe winter decline on Carn Mor. The possible role of differences in the quality of the food supply (in particular the seabird breeding colony and spatial variation in sheep grazing pressure) on creating geographical variation in body size, condition, breeding phenology, density and population dynamics are discussed in detail, as is the overall pattern of insular traits found in the mice.

Full text
Abstract:
This study seeks to investigate the origin and development of the thinking, make up, evolution, meaning, impact, essence of originality, and attempts to reclaim the true identity of African music of South Africa from 1963 to date by Philip Tabane through his concept of Malombo Music. This study introduces Philip Tabane’s biographical background, and sketches out the socio political milieu in which he has had to do creative work, maps out stages of development of Malombo music, and investigates how media was bent on shaping a particular public opinion about Malombo music. The latter is juxtaposed against Philip Tabane’s own philosophy of music making. The research further investigates what Tabane’s own definition of Malombo is. Primary and secondary sources of data are consulted, including a collection of primary data drawn from continuous dialogue with Dr Philip Tabane himself from 1990 to 2008, and getting to do media scan of public statements made in interviews with journalists. One on one discussions were held with Dr Philip Tabane in order to understand and verify popular views held about him and about his work. Secondary sources included newspaper articles, journals, policy documents, and internet survey. Findings of this research are a record of Philip Tabane’s life, discography; philosophy; compositions; key debates on the management of heritage; rights and ownership of intellectual property in South Africa; analysis of Tabane’s compositional and stylistic format; Tabane’s national and international profile; and suggestions for the development of true national heritage and culture. Above all the research findings will help in providing necessary understanding of South African music history, especially future challenges on concept development in music, ownership and rights, recommended amendments to the existing legislative framework that governs broadcast and copyrights, as well as the very history of one of the least celebrated but honoured son of the soil, Dr Philip Nchipi Tabane. Abstract:
The thesis deals with European sacral architecture of the twentieth and the twenty-first century. Particularly, it refers to Judaic, Roman-Catholic and Islamic buildings. The second part puts into historical context the sacral constructions of individual religions including their function, characters and typology. In the third part of this thesis the representative sample of significant modern sacral constructions is selected, always under circumstances regarding their creation, the urban description and the setting in a specific location as well as the architectural layout, the interior arrangment and a possible use of special technological procedures at their construction. The mutual comparison and the evaluation of the modern European sacral architecture development are carried out in the fourth part. This section notices the function and the usage of light and presents some extraordinary buildings from this point of view. The final fifth part tries to answer the question, how a modern temple should look like.
