Abstract:
Background: Absenteeism, turnover and disability among the drivers appeared to be high. The main conditions leading to disablement among drivers are related to cardiovascular diseases, psychological problems and musculo-skeletal disorders. This study was planned to determine the pattern of musculoskeletal morbidities among government bus drivers in Mangalore, the associated risk factors of musculoskeletal morbidities. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted at Mangalore KSRTC Bus Depot among 310 bus drivers over a period of 18 months from 2014 to 2016 yr. The study was conducted in three depots of KSRTC division Mangalore in Mangalore city. Results: In our study all drivers were males, the mean age 44.88 years. Out of the 310 bus drivers who participated in the study 298 belonged to upper middle class indicating that the KSRTC drivers are financially stable. The common morbidities were musculoskeletal problems especially low back ache 84.8% followed by neck pain 46.8%,about 32.3% had shoulder pain 15.8% had knee joint involvement. The proportion of bus drivers with hypertension and diabetes mellitus was 35.8%and 7.7% respectively. Out of the 310 bus drivers 239 (77.1%) consumes alcohol. The prevalence of smoking was (85.5%) and tobacco chewing was 14.5%.Conclusions: During our study we found that there is an increased prevalence of chronic conditions like diabetes mellitus and hypertension, this is attributable to the increase stress faced by the drivers in terms of the responsibility they carry to transport the public of all age groups. This unnoticed stress plays a very important part in development of the chronic conditions.

Abstract:
Background: Public transport demand forecasting is the fundamental process of transport planning activity. It plays a pivotal role in the decision making, policy formulations and urban transport planning procedures. In this paper, public bus passenger demand forecasting model is developed using a novel approach. The empirical passenger demand for a bus depot is modelled and forecasted using a data-driven method. The big data generated by Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETM) used for issuing tickets and collecting fares is sourced as the data for demand modelling. This big data is time indexed and hence has the potential for use in time-series applications which were not previously explored. Objectives: This paper studies the application of time-series method for forecasting public bus passenger demand using ETM based time-series data. The time-series approach used is the four Holt-Winters’ modeling methods. Holt-Winters’ additive and multiplicative models with and without damping have been empirically compared in this study using the data from the inter-zonal buses. The data used in the study is a part of the transaction on ticket sales by Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) maintained at the Trivandrum City depot of an Indian state Kerala, for the period between 2010 and 2013. The forecasting performance of four time-series models is compared using Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) and the model goodness of fit is determined using information criteria. Conclusion: The forecasts indicate that multiplicative models with and without damping, which better account for seasonal variations, outperform the additive models.

Abstract:
To assess the visual acuity, identify the cause for reduced vision & to advice patients regarding correction of vision in drivers for safe driving. Analysis of a cross-sectional study of people having a history of driving — two-wheeler, four-wheeler or autorickshaw was done. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) less than 6/6 in the better eye were selected for the study through screening camps for KSRTC bus drivers, Autorickshaw drivers and patients coming to the OPD of R L Jalappa Hospital & Research Center in Kolar district, having a history of driving a two-wheeler, four-wheeler & autorickshaw were included. Patients who have stopped driving due to reduced vision were excluded from the study. After taking an informed consent, patients underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examination. Those patients who were identified as having decreased vision were advised regarding the necessary treatment. Out of 706 patients, 87.99 % of drivers in this study were males and majority belonged to the age group between 20-30 years. 29.17 % of patients did not have driving license though they were driving either 2 or four-wheeler vehicles or Autorickshaws. 41% of patients did not have any eye checkup prior to our examination and after our examination was done 58.9% of patients were advised spectacle correction. This highlights the need for intensified health education to encourage drivers who experience these defects to seek prompt medical help and advice. The prevalence of refractive errors among the study population also indicates the need to enforce the law on comprehensive eye examination by appropriate professionals, as enshrined in the law, rather than just measuring visual acuity prior to acquiring or renewing drivers’ licenses, as is currently the case. "Biological Activity of Four Trichoderma Species Confers Protection against Rhizoctonia solani, the Causal Agent of Cucumber Damping-Off and Root Rot Diseases." Sustainability 15, no. 9 (2023): 7250. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/su15097250.

Full text
Abstract:
The cucumber (Cucumis sativa L.) is often subjected to several fungal diseases. Rhizoctonia solani-induced cucumber damping-off and root rot are the most common diseases reported from the commercial greenhouses of the eastern area of Saudi Arabia. The objective of the current study is to explore the antagonistic activity of four Trichoderma species against R. solani in vitro and in vivo. Ten R. solani isolates (eight belonging to AG-4 and two belonging to AG-A and AG2-1) were studied. AG4 isolates were pathogenic to cucumber plants, while AG-A and AG2-1 isolates were non-pathogenic. Seven isolates of Trichoderma spp., named T. hamatum KSATR8, T. harzianum (KSATR9 and KSATR10), T. asperellum (KSATR11, KSATC, and KSAT1E), and T. longibrachiatum KSATS were isolated, and the identities of both R. solani and Trichoderma isolates were confirmed based on the phylogenetic analysis of the DNA sequence of the ITS region. The dual culture findings indicated that T. asperellum KSATC and KSAT1E exhibited the most significant inhibitory activities against R. solani, with values of 79.33 and 70.89%, respectively. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed a considerable degradation in the cell wall and collapsing of R. solani hyphae by all Trichoderma species. Under greenhouse conditions, the application of T. asperellum KSATC and KSAT1E at concentrations of 2 × 108 conidia/mL revealed a reduction in root rot and damping-off incidence percentages with values that did not reveal a significant (p < 0.05) difference from those of Rizolex-T fungicide. Nevertheless, the efficacy of the fungicide attained 86.67%, being higher than that of T. asperellum KSATC, which reached 80%. Trichoderma asperellum KSATC and KSAT1E were the greatest in increasing peroxidase, catalase, and chitinase enzymes activities in cucumber plants. Conversely, a significant (p < 0.05) elevation in polyphenol oxidase enzyme (0.762 and 0.97 U/g FW) and total phenol content (0.55 and 0.62 mg/g FW) was recorded in cucumber plants treated with T. harzianum KSATR9 and KSATR10, respectively. The statistical analysis results displayed no considerable variations among cucumber plants regarding total chlorophyll content as a response to treatments with Trichoderma species and fungicides. Therefore, we endorse using T. asperellum KSATC and KSAT1E as an alternative to fungicides to manage root rot and damping-off in cucumbers.

Abstract:
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease and it is characterized based on the increase in the sugar level in the blood. The other diseases such as the cardiomyopathy, neuropathy and retinopathy may occur due to the DM pathology. The RR-time series or heart rate (HR) signal quantifies the beat-to-beat variations in the electrocardiogram (ECG) and it has been widely used for the detection of various cardiac diseases. Detection of DM based on the features of HR signal is a challenging problem. This paper copes with a new method for the detection of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) based on the features extracted from the HR signal. The Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA) of HR signal and the Kernel Sparse Representation Classifier (KSRC) are the mathematical foundations used to achieve the detection. SSA is used to decompose the HR signal into sub-signals, and diagnostic features such as the maximum value of each sub-signal and eigenvalues are evaluated. Then, the KSRC uses the proposed diagnostic features as inputs for detecting diabetes. The experimental results reveal that the proposal attains the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity values of 92.18%, 93.75% and 90.62%, respectively, employing the KSRC and the hold-out cross-validation approach. The method is compared with existing approaches for detecting diabetes from HR signal.

Abstract:
A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) target recognition method combining linear and nonlinear feature extraction and classifiers is proposed. The principal component analysis (PCA) and kernel PCA (KPCA) are used to extract feature vectors of the original SAR image, respectively, which are classical and reliable feature extraction algorithms. In addition, KPCA can effectively make up for the weak linear description ability of PCA. Afterwards, support vector machine (SVM) and kernel sparse representation-based classification (KSRC) are used to classify the KPCA and PCA feature vectors, respectively. Similar to the idea of feature extraction, KSRC mainly introduces kernel functions to improve the processing and classification capabilities of nonlinear data. Through the combination of linear and nonlinear features and classifiers, the internal data structure of SAR images and the correspondence between test and training samples can be better investigated. In the experiment, the performance of the proposed method is tested based on the MSTAR dataset. The results show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

Abstract:
To improve the bearings diagnosis accuracy considering multiple fault types with small samples, a new approach that combined adaptive local iterative filtering (ALIF), multiscale entropy features, and kernel sparse representation classification (KSRC) is put forward in this paper. ALIF is used to adaptively decompose the nonlinear, nonstationary vibration signals into a sum of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Multiple entropy features such as sample entropy, fuzzy entropy, and permutation entropy with multiscale are computed from the first three IMFs and a total of one hundred and eighty features are obtained. After normalization, the features are employed to train and test the classifier KSRC, respectively. Finally, the proposed approach is evaluated with two experimental tests. One is concerned with different types of bearing faults from the centrifugal pump; and the other is from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) considering 12 bearing fault states. Experimental results have proved that the proposed approach is efficient for bearing fault diagnosis, and high accuracy will be obtained with high dimensional features through small samples.

Abstract:
Object and purpose of research. This research was intended to validate supercomputer-based optimization procedure for propulsion systems of carrier ships, with a case study of hull shape and propeller optimization for a Project 1594 vessel. Materials and methods. The optimization proceeds in Russian software package pSeven. The computation core is Siemens Star CCM+ software. Three-dimensional parametric model of the propeller is generated in KSRC-developed BladePlus software, whereas three-dimensional parametric model of the hull is generated in Siemens NX software package. Hydrodynamic parameters of the propulsion system are obtained as per CFD methods. Viscous flow parameters are obtained through control volume-based solution of unsteady Reynolds equations (URANS) closed by biparametric semi-empirical turbulence model. Main results. The study yielded a new bow shape offering lower wave-making resistance for the same overall dimensions. It also yielded a new shape of propeller offering higher efficiency than the initial one taking into account the limitations for available shaft torque. Design hydrodynamic parameters have been confirmed by the model test data obtained at KSRC Deepwater Test Tank. Propulsion performance calculation has shown a growth in the achievable speed of the optimized propulsion system in different running conditions. Conclusion. The optimization studies intended to improve propulsion efficiency of Project 1594 ships yielded new shapes for hull and propeller. The solution thus obtained features high propeller efficiency and low wave-making resistance of the hull. Numerical simulation results have been confirmed with experimental data.

Abstract:
Background Occult hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections remain a safety concern worldwide. The prevalence in Kenya ranges from 2.6% to 4.4% among secondary school-going voluntary blood donors. This study estimated the prevalence of occult HBV infections among school-going voluntary blood donors through donations made to Kwale Satellite Blood Transfusion Center (KSBTC). Methods This was a retrospective cross-sectional study on data collected by the KSBTC between January 2020 and June 2021 among secondary school-going voluntary blood donors. Data were collected in MS Excel 2013 and analyzed in Epi Info 7. Descriptive statistics were calculated and we compared donors with positive Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) to those with negative HBsAg. Crude Prevalence Odds Ratios (cPOR) at 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated to identify factors associated with positive HBsAg. Results A total of 613 records were analyzed. The mean age of the donors was 19.1 years (± 1.8 years), there were 457 males (74.5%), 502 individuals were in the age group 18–25 years (82.3%), and the mean hemoglobin level was 14.1 g/dl (±1.6 g/dl). First-time blood donors made up 84.8% of all donors (513/605) and the mean inter-donation period was 20 months (±5.8 months) for repeat donors. The sero-positivity for HBsAg was 8.8% (54/613). Age category 16–17 years with positive HBsAg were 10.2% (11/108), femaleswere10.9% (17/156), and first-time donors were 9.4% (48/513). On bivariate analyses, first-time blood donors were 1.5 times more likely to test positive for HBsAg compared to repeat donors (cPOR = 1.5, 95% CI 0.61–3.57). Females were 1.4 times more likely to test positive for HBsAg compared to male donors (cPOR = 1.4, 95% CI 0.76–2.54). Conclusions The majority of the voluntary blood donors were males and the majority of occult HBV infections came in the first-time blood donor group. We recommend increasing targeted recruitment of repeat donors by encouraging healthy first-timer donors to be regular donors, and suggest this population should be vaccinated against HBV infections.
