Hogan, Louise. "The role of LILR in micobacterial infection." Thesis, St George's, University of London, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.603593.

Abstract:
Lcukocyte Ig-like receptors (LILR) are a family of innate immune receptors whose members have been shown 10 recognise both self and bacterial ligands. They can exert powerful immunomodulatory effects on monocytic cells and by doing so influence the adaptive immune response. Monocytic cells arc a target for mycobacterial infection, and LILR expression patterns correspond to leprosy disease phenotype during M.leprae infection. This thesis was based on the hypothesis that LJLR activity may also be relevant in tuberculosis. The main aim was to investigate LlLR with respect to infection with Mycobacterium bovis and to compare this with Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. By measuring the transcription of LILR using qPCR, receptor expression was shown to be altered following culture of monocytic cells with mycobacteria. Culture with M bovis demonstrated the broadest change to expression patterns, with four L1LR down-regulated (LlLRA2, LILRA3, LlLRA6, LILRB 1), and one receptor, L1LRBS, up-regulated. In the absence of any previous published studies regarding the expression, ligand or potential functions of LlLRB5, further analyses were performed for this receptor L1LRBS transfectants exhibited signalling in the presence of BCG, indicating a relevance to mycobacterial recognition. Flow cytometric analysis demonstrated LILRBS expression on low numbers of mDC but on high numbers of T cells. Furthermore, crosslinking LI LRB5 revealed the down-regulation of CD80 on antigen presenting cells, which may impact on T cell activation. Phenotypic alterations were also detected on T cells following LILRBS crosslinking. Finally, cattle, as the natural hosts of M. bovis, were hypothesised to encode and express LILR. Here the identification and classification of 16 novel bovine L1LR was described. Cattle appear to have retained both LILR and Paired Ig-Like Receptors (pm.), which are thought to have evolved from a common ancestral gene, and whilst the signalling domains are more restricted than their human counterparts, cattle possess six genomically encoded soluble receptors.

Maughan-Brown, Frances. "The Authority of the Lily and the Bird in Kierkegaard's Lily Discourses." Thesis, Boston College, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/bc-ir:104816.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Richard Kearney<br>This dissertation presents a systematic reading of the four discourses Kierkegaard wrote on Matthew 6:24-34, which I am calling the Lily Discourses (“What We Learn from the Lily in the Field and the Bird of the Air” (1847); “The Cares of the Pagans” (1848); “The Lily in the Field and the Bird of the Air” (1849); “Christ as Archi-Image” (1851)). Matthew instructs the reader to “consider the lilies,” and in reading this passage Kierkegaard presents the lilies as authoritative, rather than merely “figural” or “metaphoric”. The aim of this dissertation is to describe what Kierkegaard means by the authority of the lily and the bird. Since Kierkegaard engages with and in “figural” language in his pseudonymous as well as his signed texts, what he says about the lily and the bird in these four Discourses is significant for all of Kierkegaard’s work. In the first and the third Discourses Kierkegaard writes lyrically of the beauty of nature, but concludes with a brutal picture of nature’s death and decay. It is not nature, this dissertation argues, but the trace nature leaves in language, that Kierkegaard is investigating. Kierkegaard ends the first Discourse by invoking the positing power of language: he says, “Let the lily wither”. As if in response to the death at the end of the first Discourse, the second is written in praise “on the day all goes black.” If the first two Discourses describe the authority of the lily and the bird in terms of the performative – of positing and praise – the third Discourse describes this authority in terms of receptivity. The lily and the bird are obedient, Kierkegaard says there. He develops an account of obedience that is, on the one hand, required for reading the lily and the bird (for granting authority), and on the other, is the lesson taught by the lily and the bird. In the fourth Discourse Kierkegaard presents the archi-image (Forbillede, previously translated in English as “pattern” or “prototype”) and what corresponds to it: “imitation.” Only when we imitate, rather than ape mimetically or endlessly interpret, can the image (Billede) that we are responding to be the archi-image (Forbillede). The lily and the bird, the dissertation argues, have the authority of the archi-image only if we can read them in a certain way, that is, if our reading is non-mimetic imitation. For Kierkegaard imitation is an act, made by an individual person at a concrete time and place in history; it therefore commits the reader, in her full responsibility (including “social” or “political”) in the risk of reading. The dissertation has four chapters, each devoted to one of Kierkegaard’s Lily Discourses. Accordingly, Chapter One describes Kierkegaard’s account of the authority of the lily and the bird as positing, Chapter Two as praise, Chapter Three as obedience and Chapter Four as imitation<br>Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2015<br>Submitted to: Boston College. Abstract:
Composers have long been interested in authentic materials from their own national heritage. Many composers favored folk-based melodies and rhythms. Bela Bartok, for example, collected volumes of Hungarian folk and gypsy melodies throughout his life. Igor Stravinsky's three ballets ( Firebird, Petrushka , and The Rite of Spring ) are also famous for their employment of folk melodies and primitive rhythms. American composers such as Charles Ives and Aaron Copland represented 'Americana' through the use of American pop music, jazz, and folk songs in their compositions. Much of the music of composers who emigrated to foreign countries represents strong implications of nationalism. These composers' efforts to remember their origins, as well as nostalgia for their native culture, were expressed in their music. These qualities appear most interestingly in Asian composers such as Toru Takemitsu and Isang Yun. Despite the drastic difference between Asian and Western music, the two contrasting idioms are handled similarly by these two composers. They not only use non-Western musical materials such as folk melodies and rhythms, but also employ Asian titles, concepts, and traditional instruments to represent Asian inspiration in their music. The composition Lily Park consists of three movements, entitled Wind Bell, Goblin Lights , and Rock of Ages . The three movements are based on my personal impressions of the cemetery Lily Park, located near Deagu, Korea, where all my grandparents are buried. In this composition, Western musical idioms are integrated with the composer's Asian musical heritage. The concept of Lily Park , which is purely non-Western in origination, is realized by utilizing compositional techniques and concepts that have been developed by Western composers, such as tone color, tonality, pitch-class set theory, and serialism, with an ensemble that consists of Western instruments. These ideas are combined with Asian materials such as exotic scales, extended performance techniques associated with Asian music, and ideas that are associated with Asian philosophical and religious thought (the sacredness of the number three, use of space, and isolation).

Abstract:
Lily leaf spot disease, caused by the fungal phytopathogen, Pseudocercosporella inconspicua, infects Lilium canadense and L. grayi. The disease is currently ubiquitous in populations throughout the range of L. grayi. To determine the historical prevalence of the disease, lily specimens from eight herbaria were examined visually and microscopically, and a search for records of the pathogen was conducted using mycology databases and relevant literature. Of 516 herbarium specimens, two L. canadense and one L. grayi had the characteristic leaf lesions that contained diagnostic conidia of P. inconspicua. All three diseased specimens were collected prior to 1950. Mycological collections included two North American records of P. inconspicua on L. canadense, two on L. michiganense, one on L. philadelphicum var. andinum, and one on a cultivated Eurasian lily hybrid. Interestingly, the earliest diseased herbarium specimens were from the northeastern US with a later appearance in the southern Appalachians, a pattern also present in mycological collections of P. inconspicua. The rarity of historical specimens with disease, the temporal geographic pattern of occurrence, and the ubiquity of P. inconspicua in current populations of L. grayi suggest the spread of lily leaf spot disease in North America may threaten the viability of native Lilium host species.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to bring back to light a forgotten masterpiece of the Goset (the Moscow State Yiddish Theater), the King Lear produced in 1935, directed by Sergey Radlov. The great Solomon Mikhoels was assigned the role of Lear and Venjamin Zuskin was an extraordinary Fool. The actor’s interpretations are considered landmarks in the history of both yiddish and world theater. There are a few studies on this production, while the Goset and its King Lear should be between the pages of the Twentieth century theater. The Goset was a distinguished victim of the history of the century. Gordon Craig admired the Goset and its director Michoels so much that to study the Goset’s King Lear can reveal a lot about Craig’s idea of theater. To study this King Lear means to consider the history of the Goset and sovietic politics in art’s matters. This work could benefit of a lot of orginal documents from the Goset’s history so that it is possible to point out the importance of King Lear in theater history.

Abstract:
Lily leaf spot, a fungal foliar disease caused by Pseudocercosporella inconspicua, leads to premature senescence of aboveground tissues in Lilium grayi. At Roan Mountain, North Carolina/Tennessee, the disease was most prevalent and most severe in seedlings and juveniles. In the two growing seasons assessed, 59 and 70% of mature plants experienced disease-induced premature senescence. Plants with disease lesions on seed capsules matured fewer capsules and had fewer seeds per capsule, and seeds had reduced viability. Disease prevalence over the growing season followed a sigmoidal pattern typical of polycyclic epidemics. Plants with low and high disease severity occurred in clusters whose locations were stable across growing seasons. Prior to the recent description of lily leaf spot, L. grayi was already considered threatened or endangered in each of the three states where it naturally occurs. Therefore, this infectious disease poses conservation and management difficulties because increases in plant density can be expected to lead to enhanced disease transmission. Lily leaf spot of L. grayi is best characterized as an annually recurring epidemic because of high prevalence rates, strong impacts on all life stages, and reductions in seed production and viability.

Abstract:
My thesis aims at contributing to classifying the Liar-like paradoxes (and related Truth-teller-like expressions) by clarifying distinctions and relationships between these expressions and arguments. Such a classification is worthwhile, firstly, because it makes some progress towards reducing a potential infinity of versions into a finite classification; secondly, because it identifies a number of new paradoxes, and thirdly and most significantly, because it corrects the historically misplaced distinction between semantic and set-theoretic paradoxes. I emphasize the third result because the distinction made by Peano [1906] and supported by Ramsey [1925] has been used to warrant different responses to the semantic and set-theoretic paradoxes. I find two types among the paradoxes of truth, satisfaction and membership, but the division is shifted from where it has historically been drawn. This new distinction is, I believe, more fundamental than the Peano-Ramsey distinction between semantic and set-theoretic paradoxes. The distinction I investigate is ultimately exemplified in a difference between the logical principles necessary to prove the Liar and those necessary to prove Grelling’s and Russell’s paradoxes. The difference relates to proofs of the inconsistency of naive truth and satisfaction; in the end, we will have two associated ways of proving each result. ¶ Another principled division is intuitively anticipated. I coin the term 'hypodox' (adj.: 'hypodoxical') for a generalization of Truth-tellers across paradoxes of truth, satisfaction, membership, reference, and where else it may find applicability. I make and investigate a conjecture about paradox and hypodox duality: that each paradox (at least those in the scope of the classification) has a dual hypodox.¶ In my investigation, I focus on paradoxes that might intuitively be thought to be relatives of the Liar paradox, including Grelling’s (which I present as a paradox of satisfaction) and, by analogy with Grelling’s paradox, Russell’s paradox. I extend these into truth-functional and some non-truth-functional variations, beginning with the Epimenides, Curry’s paradox, and similar variations. There are circular and infinite variations, which I relate via lists. In short, I focus on paradoxes of truth, satisfaction and some paradoxes of membership. ¶ Among the new paradoxes, three are notable in advance. The first is a non-truth functional variation on the Epimenides. This helps put the Epimenides on a par with Curry’s as a paradox in its own right and not just a lesser version of the Liar. I find the second paradox by working through truth-functional variants of the paradoxes. This new paradox, call it ‘the ESP’, can be either true or false, but can still be used to prove some other arbitrary statement. The third new paradox is another paradox of satisfaction, distinctly different from Grelling’s paradox. On this basis, I make and investigate the new distinction between two different types of paradox of satisfaction, and map one type back by direct analogy to the Liar, and the other by direct analogy to Russell's paradox.

Abstract:
The ghost story--in all its forms--has haunted humans since the first tales of the strange and inexplicable were told around the campfires of pre-history. Such stories explore collective ideas of death and the afterlife, the eeriness of certain places, and the awe that is felt in the presence of the Unknown. Pictures of Lily and Other Stories contains three examples of the genre, each written in a different sub-genre. "Money," the story of an impoverished college student who gets a housesitting job that is more perilous than it first appears, owes much to the haunted house stories of British master M.R. James, while "Under the House" parallels the haunted love stories of Edith Wharton. Finally, the novella "Pictures of Lily" explores gothic themes in the tradition of Shirley Jackson and Oscar Wilde.

Abstract:
Lily leaf spot is an emerging disease of the globally rare Lilium grayi S. Wats., a species endemic to the southern Appalachian Blue Ridge, USA. The species is considered Threatened or Endangered in the three states where it naturally occurs (North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia). Disease leads to premature senescence of aboveground tissues and curtailment of sexual reproduction. Spore morphology, completion of Koch’s postulates, and DNA sequence data showed the causative agent of lily leaf spot to be Pseudocercosporella inconspicua (G. Winter) U. Braun, a Lilium-specific basidiomycete. Diagnostic disease symptomatology includes amphigenous necrotic lesions with tan to green margins encircling a white to grey powdery mass of conidia. Studies conducted in the field at Roan Mountain, NC/TN, in the largest known population, showed that a visual disease diagnosis based on morphology can be highly accurate in predicting P. inconspicua infection, and that high concentrations of conidia of P. inconspicua are strongly associated with infected L. grayi, but are largely absent or few on uninfected L. grayi and other species. Field inoculation trials using infected L. grayi leaf tissue as inocula resulted in transmission of disease and induction of premature senescence under natural conditions.

Abstract:
The multiplication of biographical studies about Lili Boulanger (1893-1918) encouraged this research, which is conceived as an inquiry about the education of young woman, who was born from an important French musical family of the XXe century and who became a composer without following a regular course of studies. In 1913 Lili Boulanger was the first woman to obtain the Premier Prix in composition at the Concours de Rome, with Faust et Hélène cantata. Analysing her diaries, the press, her manuscripts, the editions and a complex collection and archives which are scattered between many institutions (the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Musée de la Musique, the archives of the Centre international Nadia et Lili Boulanger in Paris ; the Médiathèque du Conservatoire supérieur de musique et danse in Lyon ; the library of the Académie de France in Rome), we have reconstituted the emergency of a musical sensibility in a privileged setting. Beyond the information already known about the musical training with Paul Vidal and Georges Caussade, this education has been enriched thanks to a mosaic of aesthetic suggestions and orientations made of listening, watching, concerts, readings and meetings during life spent between Rome and Paris at the beginning of the XXe century. The final result is the profile of an intriguing personality, plunged in modernity. Her modernity is not to be searched into her musical language which, on the contrary, doesn't betray the characteristics of the French music of those years, but into her personal approach to the various disciplines (literature, painting, philosophy) which find in music their best application field

Abstract:
Abstract Biotechnology has become a necessity, not only in research, but also in the culture and breeding of lilies. Various methods in tissue culture and molecular breeding have been applied to the production of commercially important lily species and cultivars. However, scientific research data of such species and varieties that have potential in the northern climate is scarce. In this work, different biotechnological methods were developed and used in the production and culture of a diversity of lily species belonging to different taxonomic groups. The aim was to test and develop further the existing methods in plant biotechnology for the developmental work and the production of novel hardy lily cultivars for northern climates. Most of the plant material was started from seeds, which provided genetic variability and new material for breeding. Different features in seed structure were studied with light microscopy and SEM, and different parameters affecting germination were tested. Several tissue culture protocols were also compared with different species using both solid and liquid media. Molecular biological methods were used in assessing genetic background of traditionally grown lilies. Somatic embryogenesis in callus differentiation of callus cultures was studied, and gene expression behind differentiation processes was analyzed with various molecular biological methods. Particle bombardment system was used in genetic transformation. In addition, protoplast isolation methods from various tissues were tested. The main results indicate that many tissue culture methods can be used in research and in mass production with all tested species. Especially in a large-scale production, temporary immersion system is promising. In addition to the conventional bulb scale material, seeds were found to be a suitable starting material for genetic variability required for production of new cultivars, and in the preservation of natural populations. RAPD techniques proved a suitable method for revealing phylogenetic relations of different lily species and cultivars. Methods in DNA and RNA isolation, cloning and analysis were optimized for lily material. In addition, particle bombardment system was successfully used for genetic transformation of lily callus. In the future, more information is needed to understand better the germination and differentiation processes, focusing especially in the genes, their products and function. In addition, the large and still mostly unknown lily genome is a challenge for research in the future. However, the currently presented results provide good opportunities for further developmental work and research of hardy lily species.

Made available in DSpace on 2014-05-28T16:01:36Z (GMT). Cette étude permet donc de tisser des liens étroits entre la musique et son auteur car l'œuvre de Lili Boulanger est résolument intime<br>Lili Boulanger is the first woman to get the Fisrt Great Prize of Rome in musical composition in 1913, at the age of nineteen, and after only two years of intensive studies at the Conservatoire of Paris. Our various analyses also bring to light her mastery of the diverse musical styles of her time together with an incredible maturity in the use of languages. Born in a family of musicians, Lili Boulanger’s education has been boosted by an environment constituted in great part by the parisian musical elite. Abstract:
The contribution from this research for literary studies is to launch a new view at Mario Quintana’s work, especially on the character Lili, considered by the critics as proper for children. Lili’s character draws attention of all publics: the child reader is enchanted with the playful ambient of the girl’s dreams and also with the sonority of this universe, and the adult reader is enchanted with an adventure in a world where the boundaries between real and imaginary have been erased for the emergency of poetry, the genuine life. Thus, through the adventures of Lili, we analyze some surrealistic traces in Quintana’s work, a poet who made a poetic discourse stripped of artificialities and that stands for (apparent) simplicity of quotidian life. We then discover that Lili, the poet’s favorite ghost, was born from childhood reveries to explore the world of dream and imagination.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this dissertation I examine some of the most relevant proposals of common solutions to the Liar and the Sorites paradoxes. In order to do that, I present first a definition of what a paradox is so that, with this at hand, I can characterize in detail what should we expect from a common solution to a given collection of paradoxes. Next, I look into the reasons we might have to endorse a common solution to a group of paradoxes and some consequences are drawn with respect to Vann McGee's and Graham Priest's proposals to cope with both the Liar and the Sorites paradoxes, In the next chapters, three authors are examined in some detail. First, Jamie Tappenden's account is judged inappropriate, specially in the case of the Liar paradox. With respect to the Sorites, it is showed to be at least as problematic as Supervaluational approaches. Second, Paul Horwich's epistemicist proposal is examined with a special focus on the treatment of the Liar paradox. Horwich's account about how to construct his theory of truth is formalized and critically discussed with the use of a fixed-point construction. In the last chapter, I introduce and discuss some logics based on the work of Hartry Field that use two conditionals in a language with a truth predicate and vague predicates.<br>En aquesta tesi examino algunes de les propostes mes importants de solució comuna a les paradoxes del Mentider i la Sorites.

Abstract:

Li, Dilin. "Can silence be a proper response to the liar paradox?" HKBU Institutional Repository, 2020. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/877.

Full text
Abstract:
Many attempts at solving the liar paradox involve either rejecting some principles in classical logic so as to block the argument that leads to the contradiction or modifying the notion of truth so that the liar sentence can be classified as true in one aspect while false in another. However, the prominent approaches based the above strategies may suffer from the revenge problem. That is, while they solve the pristine liar paradox, the introduction of the solution triggers another one with the same structure. In this dissertation, three prominent approaches to the liar paradox are first introduced and examined. In particular, they are, first, the Tarskian hierarchical approach, whose main idea can be roughly characterized as that a natural language is a hierarchy of a series of languages and the liar sentence is true at one level of the hierarchy and is false at another; second, Saul Kripke's paracomplete approach, whose main idea can be roughly characterized as that the liar sentence is ungrounded and has no classical truth value at all; finally, Gupta and Belnep's revision theory of truth, the main idea of which is that truth is a circular concept and that the truth predicate is circularly defined. With a new semantics and logic for circular concept and definition, one can classify the liar sentence as not categorical. Based on two general patterns that give rise to the revenge paradox by Graham Priest, it is shown that none of the above approaches can escape the revenge paradox, at least, not satisfactorily. After the examination of three prominent approaches, I provide an initial characterization of a kind of approach which I call the silence approach. The main idea of the silence approach is that, perhaps what the liar paradox teaches us is that the semantic status of the liar sentence is eventually not classifiable, in the sense that the accepted or correct semantic theory for natural language simply does not apply to the liar sentence. There are two theoretical possibilities that can evoke the failure of classification. Either there is just no semantic category that fits the liar sentence or the necessary principles for the classification do not apply to the sentence. In either case, the silence approach suggests that although the liar sentence could have a semantic status according to the accepted or correct semantic theory, but given that we cannot classify it, we cannot know it. In this dissertation, I do not provide a detailed and well-developed theory of the silence approach. Instead, after the initial characterization of this approach, I go on to introduce and examine two current theories on the liar paradox which I think satisfy at least part of my characterization of the silence approach. The first theory is the semantic epistemicism by Paul Horwich. The second one is what I call exceptional theory, which is given by Thomas Hofweber. The result of the examination is that, both theories can indeed be interpreted as a silence approach. However, although they can block both the pristine liar paradox and the revenge paradox, they suffer severely from the problem of being ad hoc. The current conclusion of this dissertation about the silence approach thus is that, it is possible to construct a silence approach which can block the pristine liar paradox and the revenge, but it is hard to find a rationale for the solution. That is, it is hard to answer the question as to why the liar sentence is not classifiable. Finally, as an overlook to the future development of the silence approach, I suggest that even if we can solve the problem of ad hocness, there remains a question as to whether the incompleteness of classification is a symptom revealing that the accepted semantic theory is defective, or it is a symptom showing that there is just no possible semantic theory that can eventually do the job. Without answering this question, the silence approach still lacks a plausible theoretical ground
