Abstract:
The aim of this article is to explain the process of translating Eminem's song titles and the various translation methods used to produce translations that are accurate and acceptable. The research methodology employed in this work is descriptive qualitative research, using a comparative approach. The article outlines the challenges involved in translating English songs into Indonesian while maintaining the melody and using limited words. The researcher used Newmark's translation theory as a framework for the translation process. The study utilized six types of translations, including word-for-word, faithful, free, semantic, idiomatic, communicative, adaptation, and literal. The most frequently used method was the word-for-word translation (53.9%), followed by faithful translation (30.7%). There were no instances of idiomatic, communicative, adaptation, or literal translations.

Abstract:
The title of this research is “Method and Procedure of Translation used in Anime Quotes from Japanese to Indonesia at Official Account LINE Bahasa Jepang Bersama”. The purpose of the research is to identify the types of technique, procedure, and method of translation applied in translating anime quotes. Theories used in this research are the theory of translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002), the procedure of translation by Vinay and Darbelnet (1995), and the translation methods by Newmark (1988). The research data was analyzed by translational equivalence method and glossing. The result of the data analysis indicates that there are several translation techniques applied, they are literal translation, amplification, modulation, linguistic amplification,established equivalence, reduction, and transposition. The most found translation technique is literal translation because its aim is to produce a translation that stick to the originality of the language source text content and form. Then, there are procedures of translation applied, they are literal translation, transposition, and modulation. Thereafter for the method of translation applied they are literal translation, free translation, communicative translation, and idiomatic translation. The most found translation method is free translation because its aim is to produce a translation that fit to the need of target language readers. The translation methods applied tend to be oriented towards the target language.

Abstract:
This study is aimed at identifying the type of translation methods and their application in translating kotowaza on the Japanese Course blog Evergreen. The data were obtained by using observation method and note-taking technique. Furthermore, the analysis of the data was done by applying the translational identity method and glossing technique. The theory of translation methods by Newmark (1988) was also used in this study. The result shows that the translation of 40 kotowaza on the Japanese Course blog Evergreen use only four from eight translation methods proposed by Newmark. Based on its translation methods, the study found out that 13 data use literal translation, 9 data use adaptation, 14 data use the free translation, and 4 data use communicative translation. Kotowaza that has an equivalent in Indonesian proverb tends to be translated by using adaptation and communicative translation. However, not all kotowaza are equivalent to Indonesian proverbs with both of those methods. In this case, using literal translation is another way of translating kotowaza. Meanwhile, kotowaza which its equivalent cannot be found in Indonesian proverb is translated with literal translation or free translation.

Abstract:
This research aimed to identify the translation procedures employed in the startup guide for the Sony Xperia C5 Ultra Dual Smartphone from English to Indonesian. The ata were collected from the guide and analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method, focusing on established translation procedures. Translation theory categorizes these procedures into seven types: borrowing, calque, literal, transposition, modulation, equivalence, and adaptation. The studies revealed that five of these procedures—literal, adaptation, borrowing, transposition, and modulation—were used in the translation process. The results showed that literal translation was the most frequently applied method, with 19 out of 48 items translated in this way. Adaptation translation accounted for 12 items, while borrowing and transposition were each applied to 8 items. Modulation was the least utilized procedure, appearing in only 1 item. This analysis highlights the predominance of literal and adaptation methods in translating technical documents, emphasizing the importance of accurate and contextually appropriate translations in user guides for electronic devices.

Abstract:
Our understanding of Vladimir Nabokov’s method of translating Eugene Onegin as literal is largely based on his own claims and as such it populates anthologies of translation theory (i.e., Venuti’s The Translation Studies Reader) and classrooms. However, upon closer examination, Nabokov’s method is extremely removed both from the broad and specialized understanding of what a literal translation is. It is neither instrumental, as any literal translation would be, nor hermeneutic, as any literary translation accompanied by a voluminous commentary should be. Nabokov’s Commentary, an adjunct to his translation of Eugene Onegin, is the key to his translation method and to the translation’s strangeness. Analyzing the nature, scope, and function of the commentary from within the field of translation studies rather than that of literary criticism, this essay accounts for a number of idiosyncrasies observed by many critics of Commentary but previously unexplored and unexplained. These include its seemingly irrational feature of discussing texts unrelated to Pushkin’s own reading list; its excessive attention to Gallicisms and Romantic texts; its role in stabilizing translation; in a word, its function in Nabokov’s innovative translation methodology. This essay argues that instead of reviewing Nabokov’s Commentary within the paradigms of literary or historiographic genres, we should consider it first as a translation tool. The translation methodology then can be reevaluated in more technical terms than conventionally practiced in literary translation criticism. This revision unveils Nabokov’s translation not as literary but technical and not as literal but corpus-based, with mechanics and parallel texts minutely detailed in the commentary.

Abstract:
This study aimed at determining the methods used in translating song lyrics on Harry's house album on Indolirik YouTube channel. The theory used in analyzing the data is Newmark theory (1988) which explained that there were two approaches in translating text namely SL Emphasis (Domestication) in which the emphasis was on the source language and the other one was TL Emphasis (Foreignization) in which the emphasis was on the target language. Newmark (1988) also explained there were eight methods of translations, namely, word for word, literal, faithful, semantic, adaptation, free, idiomatic, and communicative translation. The researcher conducted a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data. The data were taken from the translation of song lyrics on Harry's house album on Indolirik YouTube channel, which consisted of 5 songs and 111 song lyrics. The findings of this research showed that there were 6 types of translation methods used by Indolirik YouTube channel in translating the lyrics. From the analyzed data, Indolirik YouTube channelused Literal translation (43,25%), Word-for-Word translation (5,41%), Free translation (10,81%), Idiomatic Translation (17,11%), and Communicative translation (23,42%). It was also found that the translator mostly used the literal translation process, it means that the translation products focused on the source language in translating the song lyrics rather than the target one.

The objective of the research is to find out the extent of direct translation at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Pematangsiantar in the translation descriptive text from English into Indonesianin academic year 2019/2020.The problem research is about what extent of direct translation method are used at grade eight students of SMP N 6 Pematangsiantar in the translation descriptive text from English into Indonesian?. To solve the problems, the research used theories Vinay and Darbelnet in Venuti (2000:84-93) divided translation procedures into two namely Direct or Literal Translation which cover three procedures (borrowing, calque, and Literal translation). The research uses qualitative descriptive method. The data was taken from grade VIII-2 SMPN 6 Pematangsiantar with the total number of students are twenty students. The researcher takes 20 students to analyze the students’ translating. Then, the researcher analyzes the data, describe and classify their translation. The research finding of the thesis showthat the students’ translation borrowing translatiom 22,2%, calque translation 19,05%, literal translation 58,73% but some students did not get transferring the meaning of text so the students did not complete to translate the text. The researcher concludes that some students always found many difficulties in translation because they do not understand meaning word, the usage of structure in sentences and confused within the text.

Abstract:
This research aims to analyze the translation techniques used and assess the translation quality in the form of accuracy and acceptability assessment on respond-to-request speech acts of The Lost Hero and The Son of Neptune novel series written by Rick Riordan. This research used a qualitative-descriptive method whose data sources were the novel series and two raters who had aptitudes in assessing translation quality. The methods to collect and analyze the data were content analysis and Focus Group Discussion. The study found 11 translation techniques applied in translating the respond-to-request speech acts. They were establish equivalent, variation, borrowing, modulation, amplification, adaptation, discursive creation, transposition, reduction, literal translation, and substitution. Dealing with the quality, the findings showed that most translations were accurate and acceptable. The majority of accurate translations used established equivalent technique. The less accurate translations applied modulation, amplification addition, discursive creation, literal translation and reduction whereas the inaccurate ones applied literal translation technique. Meanwhile, the majority of acceptable translations used establish equivalent and he less acceptable translations applied modulation, amplification addition, and discursive creation. Thus, this research proposes that the use of appropriate translation techniques is very important for the results of quality translation that is easily understood by the reader.

This study examines how approaches affect the quality of translating the Mandarin children's narrative "对小虎的称赞" into Indonesian. This study examines how approaches affect translation quality. This study investigates how approaches affect Mandarin-to-Indonesian children's story translation quality, unlike earlier studies. This study uses qualitative research. This study found that the most common method of translating source data into the target language was literal translation. 87.70% of the data underwent literal translation, exhibiting average readability, accuracy, and acceptability. The average readability, correctness, and acceptability of semantic translation, 3.45% of total data, was good. Free translation comprised 49 cases (5.63% of total data) with worse readability, accuracy, and acceptability. We applied communicative translation to 0.92% of the data, which was readable, accurate, and acceptable. Faithful translation had 13 occurrences (1.49% of total data) of illegible, inaccurate, and poor translation. We adapted 0.57% of the data with legible, accurate, and acceptable translations. According to these data, translation method choice strongly impacts translation quality.

This research is descriptive qualitative research which aims to describe translation methods used by author in translating preface of Work in Progress English textbook. The researcher classified the data by using the theory of Newmark, (1988) which divided translation method into eight categories. This research reveals that the translation methods used in translating English textbook are free, semantic, faithful, communicative, and literal translation. The highest frequency of translation method used by the author in translating preface is free and semantic translation. The lowest frequency is literal translation.

Abstract:
The present dissertation investigates literary translation from a cultural perspective by comparing the translation of culture-specific words and concepts in five different translations of the novel Ein weites Feld by Günter Grass. The translations were chosen to represent three ‘small’ (Swedish, Danish, Norwegian) and two ‘large’ (American English, French) languages and cultures, in order to find out whether these categories are characterized by different ‘foreignizing’ or ‘domesticating’ translation methods. The main purpose of the study is to present an empirical and descriptive analysis of the concrete difficulties and possibilities connected with the process of transferring culturespecific words and concepts taken from the geographical, historical, literary and everyday context of the original work. A further aim of the study is to undertake a comparison of theory and practice of translation with regard to culture and culturespecific words. The methodological framework is taken from the historically oriented ‘Transfer’ method of the Göttingen literary translation school, where deviations from original literary texts are not seen as ‘mistakes’ in the traditional linguistic sense but as differences caused by various historical and individual factors. Above all, this study aims to focus on the translations themselves, to investigate what different solutions to cultural translation problems can tell us about the meeting between the ‘Foreign’ and the world of the translators and their prospective readership. The study’s analyses demonstrate that culture-specific words and concepts in this material are translated in a broad variety of ways, which often differ from translation to translation and therefore cannot be classified into predictable categories of translation 'strategies’. A certain pattern could be detected as far as the translation of geographical place-names and similar concepts were concerned, where the Scandinavian translators tend to preserve the original words and concepts to a greater extent than the other translators. As a contrast, the American and French translators have preserved a large number of words connected to the ‘Third Reich’ in the original form, which raises questions about the way strategies of preserving the ‘Foreign’ in translations are connected with the picture of other cultures. However, the most conspicuous result of the investigation could be found within the category of the ‘pragmatic’ decisions (Chesterman), which differ considerably in all translations as far as explanations of culture-specific phenomena within the text itself are concerned. Thus five literary translations make five different variations of the same novel. The heterogeneous translation solutions further show that the theoretical approaches within translation theory are of only limited use for describing existing literary translations in an adequate way.

Relatório de Estágio do Mestrado em Tradução apresentado à Faculdade de Letras<br>O presente relatório de estágio vem responder à necessidade de elaborar um trabalho final no âmbito de concluir o segundo ciclo de estudos, e surge na sequência da realização de um estágio curricular na Comissão Nacional da UNESCO, que teve uma duração de três meses, de setembro a dezembro de 2018. Assim, este relatório vem apresentar o trabalho realizado ao longo do dito estágio, expondo alguns exemplos práticos retirados da sua execução. Os documentos que me foram dados para traduzir na Comissão integram-se todos no grande grupo da Tradução Técnica, e fazem parte, designadamente, da área jurídica, e da área da comunicação. Paradoxalmente, a principal razão pela qual optei pela temática da versatilidade para o tema do meu relatório de estágio, foi a falta de diversidade relativamente aos tipos de textos com os quais trabalhei. Daí que a questão do papel versátil do tradutor tenha surgido tão naturalmente, fazendo eco dos ensinamentos diversos que me foram proporcionados ao longo do mestrado. Ademais, abordar a versatilidade da profissão de tradutor implica dedicar parte da investigação e do relatório não apenas aos diversos tipos de tradutores existentes nas várias áreas da tradução, mas também às diferentes técnicas e estratégias existentes e reconhecidas pelos profissionais da tradução. Existem inúmeros artigos científicos e trabalhos académicos dedicados à investigação da grande diversidade de tipos de tradução e às diversas abordagens possíveis – por exemplo, a tradução científica, a tradução política, o humor na tradução, o género na tradução, etc. –, mas é escassa a informação disponível acerca de técnicas que sejam claramente explicadas e que possam ser utilizadas como um guião para os estudantes, ou até mesmo para os profissionais da tradução. Consequentemente, o objetivo do presente relatório de estágio é esboçar, embora não de forma exaustiva, um curto quadro das técnicas e estratégias utilizadas consoante cada caso prático de tradução.<br>This Report translates the necessity of elaborating a final paper to graduate from the Masters’ degree. It comes up as a result of a curricular internship done at the Portuguese National Commission for UNESCO in Lisbon, which lasted three months, from September to December 2018. Therefore, this Report presents all the work done during the internship, by showing some of its resulting practical examples. All the documents I had to translate at the Commission belong to the Technical Translation area, and, in particular, to the legal field as well as the communication field. It is paradoxical that the major reason why I chose to write about the “versatility of the translator” is the lack of diversity of the documents I worked with. So, this topic came naturally, and reflects all the knowledge I have learned over the two-year Masters program. Furthermore, when you approach this kind of topic in an academic paper you automatically have to dedicate part of it not only to the diversity of all kinds of translators and all the specific fields of Translation, but also to the different methods and strategies existing and recognized by the professionals of this area. Although there are many scientific articles and academic papers dedicated to the investigation of the diversity of kinds of translations and all its possible approaches – for example, scientific translation, political translation, humor in translation, gender in translation -, there is scarce information available on methods clearly explained and which could be employed as a guide for students or even professional translators. Hence, the purpose of this Report is to draw a quick framework of methods and strategies in accordance to each translational practical case.

The aim of this thesis is to present an annotated literary translation of two short stories (L'arbre Yama a Barsa, ou barsaq) from the collection Histoire du pied et autres fantaisies by French author and Nobel Prize for literature winner J. M. G. Le Clézio. The first part of this thesis contains a translation of the two short stories. The second part, a commentary on the translation, includes information about the choice of the text, the author and his work, main stylistic and thematic features of the two translated texts, a list of main translation problems and strategies to solve them, the choice of the translation method and conception, the reception of Le Clézio's work in Czech literary context and an analysis of a survey among Czech publishers.

Szymborska, U. Fanthorpe, J. Stone etc.). It results from an Intermedial studies seminar held in 2021 within the program Literature and Intercultural Communication at Masaryk University, Brno. The contributions display various approaches that fall under two main intermedial methods, literature-centered (introduced by Werner Wolf), which focuses primarily on a semantic analysis of the original text, and literature-oriented (as suggested by Irina Rajewsky), which respects the transmediation as an autonomous representation and observes its relations to the pretext mainly retrospectively; and even a comparative one, which involves a translinguistic analysis of translations as intercultural and historical transfers.

The eighteenth century saw the curious tradition of translating Milton’s Paradise Lost into normative English prose and verse. The status of these translations as literary curiosities belies their serious ambition: to secure a universal readership of this English classic, an ambition also articulated in contemporary works of criticism and commentaries. Rather than treating this cluster of works as adaptations, this chapter conceives of them as intralingual translations, thus positioning them in the terms with which their authors describe them and within the earlier tradition of translation-as-commentary. Milton’s English translators aim at making his epic accessible to women, ‘foreigners’, ‘young people’, and ‘those of a capacity and knowledge below the first class of learning’, even if that accessibility requires some rewriting. Borrowing methods from the teaching of Latin, these authors established a practice that persists to this day in student-friendly translations of English poetry.

This article, based on three key case studies, presents an overview of the translation of Russian literature in Mexico from 1921 to 2021. First, it explores the influence of Russian thought and Soviet policies on the cultural project of the Mexican intellectual and politician José Vasconcelos during his tenure as Secretary of Public Education (1921-1924), drawing on Vladimir Maiakovskii’s impressions of his trip to Mexico in 1925. Vasconcelos’s programme is still regarded as the most important transformation of cultural policies in post-revolutionary Mexico. Second, I analyse the work of Mexican author Sergio Pitol in translating and disseminating Russian literature from the 1950s to the 2000s. Pitol’s case is exceptional, because he combined translation work with mastery as a prose writer, leading to the award of the Cervantes Prize―the most important prize for Spanish-language writers. Third, I focus on the work of the Mexican translator Selma Ancira as a professional translator of Russian literature from 1980 to the present day. The quality and diversity of Ancira’s versions of both Russian and Modern Greek make her a prominent figure in the contemporary panorama of Spanish-language translation. For each case study, I use a microhistorical method within the frame of the sociology of translation. Lastly, I link relevant events in the cultural and literary exchange between Mexico and Russia since 1920, seeking to delineate the role of Mexican intellectuals in the translation of Russian literature into Spanish.

We consider a combined satisfiability problem where an instance is given in two parts: a set of traditional clauses extended with a set of parity (xor) constraints. To solve such problems without translation to CNF, we develop a parity constraint reasoning method that can be integrated to a clause learning solver. The idea is to devise a module that offers a decision procedure and implied literal detection for parity constraints and also provides clausal explanations for implied literals and conflicts. We have implemented the method and integrated it to a state-of-the-art clause learning solver. The resulting system is experimentally evaluated and compared to state-of-the-art solvers.

The purpose of the paper is to summarise and present semantic and structural peculiarities of phraseological units with MONEY component translation, based on modern English and German Economic texts. Methodology. The survey is based on comparison of semantic and structural peculiarities of phraseological units with MONEY component, that can be used in modern Economic texts in English and German languages and main methods of their translation into the Ukrainian language. For research of features of phraseology units with a component on denotation of MONEY translation we analysed 164 English phraseological units with the structure of word-combinations, that were investigated and described the main ways of their translation and 103 phraseological units from the economic articles of German newspapers. The analysis of the economic articles gave possibility to carry out thematic classification of phraseological units with the component-name MONEY in English (money, penny, cent, dollar, pound, cash) and German languages (Geld, Mark, Euro, Cent), within the framework of that the groups of phraseological units are distinguished with sema composition of the meaning. According to semantic classification English and German phraseology units with a MONEY component were divided into such groups: on denotation of riches and profit, wastefulness and charges, feelings and looks of man, relation of man to money, poverty and lack of money and on denotation of currency and bank transactions. The percentage ratio of semantic groups of English and German phraseological units with MONEY component in the economic sphere is represented on diagrams. Basic methods of phraseological units translation that are used by translators for the achievement of maximal adequacy of translation are distinguished. Among the methods of English phraseological units translation with a MONEY component the following one are distinguished: selection of equivalent, analogue, by the method of literal and descriptive translation whereas German phraseology units with a MONEY component are translated by phraseology and unphraseology methods; to phraseology the method of selection of eauivalent or analogue is taken, to unphraseology correspond calquing and descriptive translation. Carried analysis of features of English and German phraseology units with a MONEY component into the Ukrainian language translation did possible the reflection of research results by means of the diagram.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the functioning of Turkish translations of Shakespeare's poetry and dramaturgy, the formation of a holistic picture of the stages of discovery of Shakespeare by the Turks. The aim of the study is to identify and present the main points related to the transfer of Shakespeare's word into Turkish culture through translations from European languages. The proposed study is focused on translation aspects, as translation has become the first link in the dialogue between English and Turkish literature during the contact and interaction of Turkish literature with the Western, the processes of familiarization of the Shakespeare with the Turks, the perception and reproduction of Shakespeare's creativity on Turkish soil. In this study we used such methods as the cultural-historical method, which focuses on the translation of Shakespeare's works in relation to the cultural-historical development of Turkish society; a comparative method aimed at comparing the original sonnets and dramas of Shakespeare with translations into Turkish; receptive-aesthetic method, focused on focusing on how the pictorial and expressive artistic means of Shakespeare's works in Turkish translations are projected on the recipient (reader), convey to him the author's idea. Particular attention is focused on the translation analysis of some sonnets and dramas. Working with factual material revealed the basic prerequisites for entry into the Turkish literature of Shakespeare's works (Divan literature, the period of reforms), made it possible to characterize the first stage of translation studies – namely, the translation of Shakespeare through the prism of the French language, and accordingly the translation from the French language. As a result, we conclude that no artistic translation, especially poetic one, can be definitive, since there are always unrealized reserves of the original hidden in the multifacetedness of its associative relations. And each translation is only a certain link, the voicing of voices in the process of functioning of the artistic image. This can be explained by the considerable number of translations in Turkish of both the poetic and dramatic works of Shakespeare from the second half of the 19th century to the present. Also the great potential of the Turkish youth in the translation field has been revealed, which is certainly facilitated by the popularity of English and literature in higher education. institutions.

Abstract:
Translation of precedent phenomena requires a special approach to preserve their uniqueness and authenticity. This article studies the ways of translating precedent phenomena in video games on the example of localisation of the computer game “Atomic Heart” by Mundfish studio. The authors analyse the difficulties arising in the translation of precedent phenomena and consider the translation strategies that allow preserving the authenticity of precedent phenomena. In the game “ATOMIC HEART”, precedent phenomena are used to create “false nostalgia”, which arouses the interest of domestic users of different age categories. Feedback from foreign users indicates that it was not possible to fully localise the game for other cultures. In most cases, a resistive method with reliance on literal translation or omission of the precedent element was used to convey the meaning of precedent phenomena. As a result, foreign recipients, unlike domestic ones, do not experience vivid emotions and nostalgia while playing the game, encountering different cultural references.

It is necessary to solve the following tasks in the course of the research: (1) to identify the semantic and pragmatic characteristics of metaphorical economic terms; (2) to determine the types of transformations used in the translation of metaphorical economic terms. Literal translation, modulation, and explicatory translation should be considered as typical ways to translate metaphorical economic terms, as it is shown in our research. And the choice of a particular translation method depends on various intra- and extra-linguistic factors, such as the historical and cultural background, the mental picture of the world presented in the source language.

Для анализа переводов требуется разработать количественную оценку степени сохранения переводчиком оригинального стиля автора и создать метод, позволяющий определять степень близости перевода к оригиналу. Адаптирован теоретико-информационный метод, предложенный для атрибуции литературных текстов и рассмотрены переводы литературных произведений с английского языка на русский и с русского на английский. Разработан метод определения качества перевода, считая, что перевод тем лучше, чем больше сохраняется стиль писателя и чем меньше проявляется стиль переводчика. To analyze translations, we invented a quantitative assessment of the degree to which the translator preserves the original style of the author and produced a method that allows determining the degree of closeness of the translation to the original. Therefore, we adapted the information-theoretic method proposed for the attribution of literary texts. Afterwards, we used an adapted method to consider translations of literary works from English to Russian and from Russian to English. In result, we developed a method for determining the quality of a translation, considering that the translation is better when the more the style of the writer is preserved and the less the style of the translator is manifested.

When translation is considered in the context of university studies, the key questions – how to teach and how to study translation – become two closely related perspectives, equally essential for teachers of translation. This close association between the perspectives of the teacher and the student is also linked to the requirement to be aware of the decision-making routines used by student translators. Teachers need to anticipate potential issues and equip students with problem-solving methods; in general terms, this means a specific way of thinking and acting for translators. Though highly individual, there are some common features and approaches. This paper is aimed at providing, based on brief references to theoretical literature, analytic insights into several aspects of teaching translation in tertiary education that make an essential contribution to enhanced competence of student translators. It does this by examining, first, the primary aspects of translation studies and translation to be discussed with students; second, a number of the most important approaches and techniques for ensuring productive studies; and third, illustrative translation units. The paper covers some key terminological, contextual, co-textual, and editorial considerations for developing student awareness regarding the prerequisites for efficient translation procedures and for quality translations. In practical terms, tertiary translation studies should be aimed at undertaking course activities that ensure advancement of students’ competence, including general background knowledge and specific skills. Structured theoretical and analytical insights into translation and ready-made sets of priorities and approaches save time for students in understanding the essence of translation and the factors that determine the quality of the target language-for-special-purposes or literary text. In particular, discussions should emphasise interpretative aspects, the poeticity of text, function-based, process-oriented, and product-based approaches, the technique of key focus areas, ways of encouraging flexibility and avoiding literal translation, contextual and co-textual considerations, and text revision.

Culturemes are the markers of the source culture, which can reach the reader in the target language only through the ability of the translator, who must, in fact, be a great connoisseur of the most hidden cultural details. For the transposition of a foreign culture into a new culture, for a proper communication between them, a loan is needed, retrieval and processing of information so that it is accepted. The motivation behind this study is to provide an overview of how to approach culturemes in the translation of works of contemporary Chinese literature in Romanian, works characterized by great linguistic and extra-linguistic generosity. In order to achieve this goal, we followed the stages of identifying the culturemes from thirty-one Chinese contemporary novels translated in Romanian; followed by creating a corpus based on fourteen categories and five equivalence methods to ensure the cultural equivalence, coherence and homogeneity of Chinese works recreated for the Romanian reader. Finally, we performed an in-depth study of a selection of culturemes from each category, with the aim of showing their distribution in the Romanian translation of Chinese fiction. The study intends to provoke but also to help raise the awareness that translations are not only transpositions (by this we mean moving from one linguistic register to another without operating the text as part of a cultural whole, approaching it externally to all of its sources of influence from the culture in which it has been created) of a work in another language, but they have the primary role of enriching knowledge about one's culture, civilization, literature – i.e. China’s cultural heritage for the present study. Culturally-aware literary translations are the most effective and most stable manner of intercultural exchange, of international prosperity of a culture, of understanding and acknowledging the cultural specifics of one nation. The intertextual references – the culturemes – studied, are part, as will be presented, of all cultural spheres, from those denoting the daily life of the Chinese, the food and basic needs, to those denoting holidays, toponymy, units of measurement, history, but also those that are politically motivated, while also spiritual, subtle, erudite, which only close study, extensive knowledge and diligent work can drive the translator to find and transfer them to the target reader.

Abstract:
Purpose. The article deals with various lexico-stylistic means of portraying a literary character. The analysis is based on the empirical study of the story “The Pool” by a famous English writer William Somerset Maugham. The main methods used in the research are: the method of contextual analysis and the descriptive-analytical method. Results. The results of the research revealed that the peculiar characteristic of the story “The Pool” as well as of many other Maugham’s stories is the author’s strong presence. The portrayal characteristics of the protagonists, their manner of speech, the surrounding nature greatly contribute to creating the unforgettable characters of Lawson and his wife Ethel. Somerset Maugham employs various lexico-stylistic means to create the images of Lawson and Ethel, allowing the reader to vividly portray their personalities. Practical implications. The received results can be used in teaching Stylistics of the English language, stylistic analysis of the text as well as theory and practice of translation, in writing course and graduation papers.

Abstract:
Purpose. The goal of the present article is to study various means of creating a literary character. Analyzing the creative work of a famous English writer William Somerset Maugham and basing on the story «The Kite» an attempt is made to scrutinize Maugham’s peculiar style and lexico-stylistic devices he employs to create the main female characters of the story «The Kite». The main methods used in the research are: the method of contextual analysis and the descriptive-analytical method. Results. The results of the research revealed that the peculiar characteristic of the protagonists of the story “The Kite” is the author’s strong presence. Portraying the characters of Missis Sunbury and Miss Bevan, Somerset Maugham pays special attention to precise description of their appearances and manner of speech. Employing various lexico-stylistic devices, S. Maugham creates extraordinarily vivid characters. Practical implications. The received results can be used in teaching Stylistics of the English language, stylistic analysis of the text as well as theory and practice of translation.
