Ramos, Miguel. "Lucumí (Yoruba) Culture in Cuba: A Reevaluation (1830S -1940s)." FIU Digital Commons, 2013. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/966.

Full text
Abstract:
The status, roles, and interactions of three dominant African ethnic groups and their descendants in Cuba significantly influenced the island’s cubanidad (national identity): the Lucumís (Yoruba), the Congos (Bantú speakers from Central West Africa), and the Carabalís (from the region of Calabar). These three groups, enslaved on the island, coexisted, each group confronting obstacles that threatened their way of life and cultural identities. Through covert resistance, cultural appropriation, and accommodation, all three, but especially the Lucumís, laid deep roots in the nineteenth century that came to fruition in the twentieth. During the early 1900s, Cuba confronted numerous pressures, internal and external. Under the pretense of a quest for national identity and modernity, Afro-Cubans and African cultures and religion came under political, social, and intellectual attack. Race was an undeniable element in these conflicts. While all three groups were oppressed equally, only the Lucumís fought back, contesting accusations of backwardness, human sacrifice, cannibalism, and brujería (witchcraft), exaggerated by the sensationalistic media, often with the police’s and legal system’s complicity. Unlike the covert character of earlier epochs’ responses to oppression, in the twentieth century Lucumí resistance was overt and outspoken, publically refuting the accusations levied against African religions. Although these struggles had unintended consequences for the Lucumís, they gave birth to cubanidad’s African component. With the help of Fernando Ortiz, the Lucumí were situated at the pinnacle of a hierarchical pyramid, stratifying African religious complexes based on civilizational advancement, but at a costly price. Social ascent denigrated Lucumí religion to the status of folklore, depriving it of its status as a bona fide religious complex. To the present, Lucumí religious descendants, in Cuba and, after 1959, in many other areas of the world, are still contesting this contradiction in terms: an elevated downgrade.

Concordia, Maria J. "The Anagó Language of Cuba." FIU Digital Commons, 2012. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/732.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the socio-linguistic factors that led to the emergence of a new language in Cuba known as Anagó. This language emerged from contact between multiple dialects of the West African Yoruba language and Spanish. Language contact between the Yoruba language and Spanish took place in Cuba beginning in the nineteenth century after the introduction of large numbers of Yoruba speakers into Cuba during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. This thesis argues against the opinion that Anagó is simply a corrupted and imperfect form of Yoruba. Instead, it maintains that Anagó is a new language that emerged in Cuba and became a functional vehicle for the transmission of ideas and culture. Additionally, this study will present evidence that the Anagó speaking community was a constituent part of Cuban society since the nineteenth century, and is therefore an inextricable part of Cuban cultural patrimony. Twentieth century examples of Anagó language are examined as evidence of a vital Anagó speaking transnational community.

Elder, Carley. "Conjoined Lucuma Fruit Vessels: Evolution & Context in Nasca Art." VCU Scholars Compass, 2015. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/4070.

Full text
Abstract:
The function of a ceramic vessel is often evaluated in relation to its form. Vessels with complex forms can be challenging to analyze from this perspective and require a different approach. One such example is an overlooked yet long-lived specialized vessel type in the form of conjoined lúcuma fruits found throughout the ancient Andes. The main object of this study is a Nasca version of this vessel type in the Virginia Museum of Fine Art. This study explores the relationship between form and iconography, rather than function. It examines how Nasca potters adopted the conjoined lúcuma form vessel and adapted it to into their fertility iconography.

Norman, Lisanne. ""I Worship Black Gods": Formation of an African American Lucumi Religious Subjectivity." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:17467218.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1959, Christopher Oliana and Walter “Serge” King took a historic journey to pre-revolutionary Cuba that would change the religious trajectory of numerous African Americans, particularly in New York City. They became the first African American initiates into the Afro-Cuban Lucumi orisha tradition opening the way for generations of African Americans who would comprehensively transform their way of life. This dissertation examines the inter-diasporic exchanges between African Americans and their Cuban teachers to highlight issues of African diasporic dissonance and differing notions of “blackness” and “African.” I argue that these African Americans create a particular African American Lucumi religious subjectivity within the geographical space of an urban cosmopolitan city as they carve out space and place in the midst of religious intolerance and hostility. The intimate study of these devotees’ lives contributes new understandings about the challenges of religious diversity within contemporary urban settings. These African Americans cultivated a new religious subjectivity formed through dialogical mediation with spiritual entities made present through material religious technologies, such as divination, spiritual masses, and possession. Through the lens of lived religion, I examine the experiences of African American Lucumi devotees to better understand how their everyday lives reflect the mediation between a private religious life, defined and structured by spiritual entities, and their public lives in the contemporary sociocultural, economic and political context of urban American society. Based on more than 8 years of intense participant observation and semi-structured interviews and discussions, I analyze how religious subjectivities and religious bodies are cultivated as these African Americans leave their mark on this religious tradition, their geographical surroundings, and African American religious history.<br>African and African American Studies

Orosei, Roberto, Angelo Pio Rossi, Federico Cantini, et al. "Radar sounding of Lucus Planum, Mars, by MARSIS." AMER GEOPHYSICAL UNION, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/625516.

Full text
Abstract:
Lucus Planum, extending for a radius of approximately 500km around 181 degrees E, 5 degrees S, is part of the Medusae Fossae Formation (MFF), a set of several discontinuous deposits of fine-grained, friable material straddling across the Martian highland-lowland boundary. The MFF has been variously hypothesized to consist of pyroclastic flows, pyroclastic airfall, paleopolar deposits, or atmospherically deposited icy dust driven by climate cycles. Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS), a low-frequency subsurface-sounding radar carried by European Space Agency's Mars Express, acquired 238 radar swaths across Lucus Planum, providing sufficient coverage for the study of its internal structure and dielectric properties. Subsurface reflections were found only in three areas, marked by a distinctive surface morphology, while the central part of Lucus Planum appears to be made of radar-attenuating material preventing the detection of basal echoes. The bulk dielectric properties of these areas were estimated and compared with those of volcanic rocks and ice-dust mixtures. Previous interpretations that east Lucus Planum and the deposits on the northwestern flanks of Apollinaris Patera consist of high-porosity pyroclastic material are strongly supported by the new results. The northwestern part of Lucus Planum is likely to be much less porous, although interpretations about the nature of the subsurface materials are not conclusive. The exact origin of the deposits cannot be constrained by radar data alone, but our results for east Lucus Planum are consistent with an overall pyroclastic origin, likely linked to Tharsis Hesperian and Amazonian activity. Plain Language Summary Lobe-shaped thick deposits, collectively known as the Medusae Fossae Formation, are found west of the Olympus Mons volcano on Mars. Visual observations of these smooth and relatively unremarkably looking materials have not definitively determined how they formed with hypotheses ranging from volcanic ash to remnants of a materials deposited at a previous location of the north pole, to accumulation of atmospheric dust. In this study we used the ground penetrating radar on board Mars Express to see through these deposits to derive information about Lucus Planum, the central lobe of the Medusae Fossae Formation. Through our analysis of the way the radar waves were reflected by subsurface layering, we concluded that the materials forming Lucus Planum are spatially variable: the east and west portions of the deposits are highly porous and probably composed of ashes and rocks from nearby volcanoes. In the north-west the deposits are much denser, but we could not unequivocally define their nature. Finally, our instrument could not detect signals from the central part of Lucus Planum, which suggests yet a different component in the deposits. This diversity points to a dynamic geological history in this unique region of Mars.

Guerrero, Castillo Pedro Alonso.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this work is to determine the composition of the oil and hydrophilic methanolic extract of lucuma seeds (Pouteria lucuma), which are generated as agroindustrial waste. These come from the district of Chilca (located in the province of Cañete, 62 km from Lima), donated by the OVNI ice cream shop. The methodology consists in obtaining the hydrophilic methanolic extract and the oil, the first comes from the maceration of the seed with methanol and the removal of the lipophilic part with hexane, while the oil is the result of the separation with hexane at the extracts generated by maceration with methanol and acetone sequentially and by extraction with Sohxlet equipment to the final residue with hexane. Thus, metabolites such as free fatty acids, esterified fatty acids, linear triterpenes, steroidal and non-steroidal triterpenes, among others, are identified in the three fractions comprising the oil by GC-MS and 851.49 ± 1.29 mg of -sitosterol and 75.42 ± 1.02 mg of stigmasterol per 100 g of oil. While with the GC-FID and FAME standards, the presence of oleic, palmitic, stearic and (9E) -octadecenoic acids is reported, which make up 30% of the oil. The content of total phenols is 1130.63 ± 11.89 mg EAG / 100 g of dry seed and total flavonoids of 661.23 ± 4.73 mg of quercetin / 100 g of dry seed in the hydrophilic methanolic extract. Through UHPLC-ESI-MS / MS, it is reported that metabolites such as amino acids, organic acids, gallic acid, a wide range of flavonoids, among others, are contained in the same extract and with the use of DPPH reagent it is recorded that it possesses a medium inhibitory concentration (IC50) at 41 μg / ml. Based on the results, it is concluded that this agroindustrial waste has an added value to be explored.<br>Tesis

Abstract:
This study focuses on two areas: alchemy (Part I) and rituals of initiation (Part II) in the works of Miguel de Cervantes, focusing on Don Quijote de la Mancha as my main case study. The first part analyses the function of alchemy and how it can be interpreted throughout the works and various literary genres of Cervantes. It will demonstrate that the texts of Cervantes contain both explicit and implicit allusions to, as well as different aspects of alchemy, such as operative and spiritual alchemy and how these are ultimately used by Cervantes as a means of expression. The author draws from this rich source and modifies these means of expression in order to achieve various results: sometimes with wit or in relation to fraud; at other times it focuses on inner alchemy relating to chivalry in what I have called spiritual chivalry, which has the aim of self-improvement and ultimately, gnosis.  Regarding the chivalric rituals of initiation, according to this investigation chivalry serves as both satire and representation of the alchemical process in the case of Don Quijote, which finds its key moments during the rituals. In this sense alchemy and chivalry are studied as two sides of the same coin, in which the search for something higher, an object (the philosopher stone, the beloved), subjects the protagonist to continuous transmutations and puts him in contact with the transitory, that is, liminal states, people and spaces. From this perspective Don Quixote de la Mancha is built upon liminal poetics. My approach, which follows the tenets of analogical hermeneutics, is included within the framework of the Western Esotericism Studies. The 16th and 17th centuries were a fertile age for alchemy throughout Europe. In Spain, alchemy and other esoteric disciplines co-existed with the Spanish Inquisition and its body for the control of ideas and texts: censorship. By being ambiguous and putting into dialogue different ideas of alchemy, Cervantes not only allowed readers to reach their own conclusions, he also protected his work from censorship.

Full text
Abstract:
This doctoral thesis analyses the evolution of the graphic arts industry in Barcelona during the second half of the 19th century, when it evolved from handwork to a mechanical industry, focusing on its protagonists: printing and lithography houses. The thesis is mainly based on primary sources, and studies the evolution of the industry from two perspectives. At the industry level, it offers an overview of the sector’s development and configuration as part of Barcelona’s industrial landscape. At an individual level, this work studies the main characteristics of each printing and lithography workshop in Barcelona that have been identified and documented. The general study of the industry is detailed in Chapter 2. This chapter determines its composition, activity, and presence within Barcelona’s industrial network in order to quantify the growth experienced during the period studied. First, the degree of mechanization of the industry is assessed by analysing the available machinery in the workshops. Second, the professionals in the field are studied to determine their tasks, their position within the workshop, and their working conditions, including a gender-based approach. Last, advertising, professional journals, and exhibitions are investigated with the aim to highlight the dissemination activities at both individual and industry levels. Lastly, Part III focuses on studying individual workshops by creating a descriptive directory of over 840 printing houses and lithography workshops which can be documented as active in Barcelona during the second half of the 19th century. Every workshop is described in file format, including not only identification data such as name and address, but also information regarding activity period, machinery and equipment owned, relationship with other workshops, succession line, references in guides, exhibitions where they participated, available services, etc.

Abstract:
The importance of studying the urbanism of Roman cities lies not only in the information it gives us about the different public facilities that the urban centers had, associated with political, legal and religious life, but also with entertainment and spectacle, but above all in their capacity cities, and their physical evolution, have to document the social transformations of their civic body. Thus, the analysis of the changes made in streets and quarters but also in public and private buildings also allows a better understanding of the ideological, political, economic and social changes of the societies that created, inhabited and transformed a given urban center. The city of Lucus Augusti, founded in the late 1st century BC by Augustus, has its origin associated with the administrative reform carried out in Hispania, once the entire peninsula was annexed to the Empire, at the end of the Cantabrian Wars, through the creation of three conuentus iuridici in northwestern Iberia, an instrument used to pacify and integrate indigenous peoples into the Roman world. In order to better understand foundational urbanism of Lucus Augusti, as well as its evolution over the centuries of Roman occupation, we analyzed the reports of a wide range of interventions framed in seven archaeological zones, namely those associated with the streets of Raiña, Progreso, Clérigos, San Marcos, Anxel Fole, Armanyá and Montevideo, located inside the Historic Center of Lugo, in the intramural area of Late Imperial walls, a structure that still persists in the urban landscape of that city. Finally, we have proposed a comparative analysis of the design and evolution of Lucus Augusti's urban morphology with available data of other Roman cities in the northwest, giving special value to Bracara Augusta, capital of the conventus bracaraugustanus, which has over 40 years of systematic excavations and integrated study, thus constituting an unavoidable reference for the present work.

Text in Afrikaans<br>Summary in English<br>Until recently damages were only awarded in South African law for the loss of an object which was utilised for the generation of income. In Kellerman v South African Transport Services' damages were awarded for the first time for the loss of use of an object, which was used for non-business purposes. In this dissertation the writer aims to indicate that the personal loss that a plaintiff suffers by the loss of the object is so closely related to the physical possession through which it is served, that the Jaw should protect such personal interest. In such circumstances damages should be awarded in principle, irrespective of whether the plaintiff used the object for business purposes or whether he indeed hired a substitute or not. There is room in the South African law for development in the area of delictual damages for the Joss of the possibility to use a material object.<br>Private Law<br>LL.M.
