Abstract:

Augustine has had a large influence on the development of western theology, and nowhere is this more obvious that in Martin Luther's understanding of God, humankind and grace. Yet at the same time there are also significant differences in the two churchmen's thought. Sometimes these differences are subtle, such as their views of the state; other times they are not so subtle, such as their positions on free will or their praise of philosophy and its usefulness in sounding the depth of Christianity. In order to best explain these varying views, one must look at Augustine's and Luther's diverging opinions of man's nature where one will see that the dissimilarities are best understood in light of Luther's pessimistic view of humanity.

Abstract:

This study with the title Luther and the Law in the Lutheran Church of Uganda investigates how the Law is understood and interpreted by Lutherans in the Church of Uganda. It studies the Lutheran understanding of the Law from the Reformer, Martin Luther, to the current Lutheran Church. The study also presents the findings from the Ugandan Lutherans. The research question is to find out whether the Lutheran Church of Uganda understands and interprets the Law in the same way as Luther and other Lutherans across the globe. The motivation for doing this research is the contextualisation of the Gospel, that is, to find out whether the social and cultural context of the Lutherans in Uganda affects their understanding and interpretation of the Law. Luther understands and interprets the Law according to his social context of the sixteenth century. His background is much different and so much removed from the African context the Lutherans in Uganda find themselves in today. Even in Luther we find some conflicts with Paul because of different social contexts. Therefore, can the Lutheran Church of Uganda have the same understanding of the Law as Luther? Are there aspects in the Law s interpretation that are peculiar to the social context of the people of Uganda? This study keeps in mind the social and cultural context of the people involved in the understanding and interpretation of the Law. This study investigates whether the Lutheran Church of Uganda has its own distinct understanding and interpretation of the Law given its distinct social location and cultural background. This is important because people understand a concept better when it is applied to an environment that is familiar to them. For example, when Paul preaches to the gentiles he strips his gospel of Jewish practices of circumcision and food laws. This, however, did not stand well with his fellow Jews (cf. Gl 2). Jews thought that only those within Jewish ethnicity should be counted among the people of God. This study is interested in finding out whether the cultural context of Lutherans in Uganda influences their understanding and interpretation of the Law. To achieve this goal, this study presents the Western Lutheran understanding of the Law (Chapter 2), the Law as it is understood by Lutherans in Uganda (Chapter 3), and then compares (Chapter 4) and contrasts (Chapter 5) the two understandings. Abstract:

Der Gegenstand dieser Arbeit sind die physischen, bibliographischen und infrastrukturellen Dimensionen skandinavischer Buchdruckkultur im Spannungsfeld zwischen Spätmittelalter und früher Neuzeit, Scholastik und Humanismus, spätem Katholizismus und früher Reformation. Ihr theoretischer Ausgangspunkt ist die Erkenntnis, dass die vorreformatorische skandinavische Buchkultur nur im Zusammenhang und Wechselspiel mit der gleichzeitigen kontinentaleuropäischen Buchkultur verstanden werden kann. Der von Deutschland ausstrahlende Vertrieb von gedruckten Büchern erweiterte sich im Gefolge der Preiskrise der 1480er und dem Ausbau Export-orientierter kontinentaler Buchdruckzentren zu einem fest etablierten, zuverlässigen Buchhandel europäischen Ausmasses. Er stellte für skandinavische Drucker eine grosse Herausforderung dar, der sie erst nach 1525 mehr und mehr gewachsen zeigten. Auch wenn die (selbstverständlich nur ungenau zu schätzende) Zahl der gedruckten Bücher, die vor der Reformation in Skandinavien vorhanden waren, an sich klein war, stützt die weit höhere Zahl der Provenienzen eindeutig die Erkenntnis, dass wir es mit einer wesentlich grösseren Buchkultur zu tun haben als bislang angenommen. Die skandinavische vorreformatorische Buchkultur unterschied sich dabei grundsätzlich nicht von der zeitgenössischen kontinentalen oder westeuropäischen Buchkultur. Gegenüber der dynamischen zeitgenössischen kontinentalen Buchzentren entwickelte sich Skandinavien zwar langsamer, ebenso wie Auswirkungen der geographisch periphen Lage nicht ausser Acht gelassen werden dürfen. Gleichzeitig aber war es in vielerlei Hinsicht fest im Gefüge der Netzwerke des kirchlichen, akademischen, intellektuellen und buchhändlerischen Europas verankert.<br>The subject of this thesis are the infrastructural, bibliographical and physical dimensions of Scandinavian print culture between the contradictory contexts of the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period, scholasticism and humanism, late Catholicism and the dawn of the Reformation. Its theoretical point of point of origin is the awareness of the importance of the connection and interplay of Scandinavian pre-Reformation book culture with its contemporary continental counterpart for a deeper understanding of its characteristics and development. The trade with printed books emanating from Germany expanded to a reliable, well-established trade of European dimensions. While being a challenge for Scandinavian printing, which they met successfully not before after 1525, for readers it meant an opportunity. Although the number of printed books available in Scandinavia before the Reformation was not large, the large number of provenances identified and presented in this thesis supports the assumption that this print culture was much larger than assumed up to now. The nature of the Scandinavian pre-Reformation print culture didn’t essentially differ from its continental or Western European siblings. In comparison, Scandinavia did evolve slower and we mustn’t disregard the effects of a position in the geographical periphery. But, at the same time, was Scandinavia firmly positioned in European ecclesiastical, academical, intellectual and book trade networks.

Bien que Luther ait clairement proclamé la primauté de la raison et l'entière liberté de l'homme dans le monde, il fut perçu par la postérité comme l'un des plus féroces ennemis de la raison et de la liberté pour avoir nié leur valeur dans le ciel. La thèse démontre l'indéniable compétence philosophique de Luther acquise à Erfurt. Ses œuvres témoignent d'une pensée précise, profonde et logique, innovante aussi avec l'application du principe de parcimonie à la sotériologie. Le sens de sa critique de la raison s'éclaire lorsqu'est pris en compte son arrière-plan biblique (la tradition prophétique) et son intention théologique (rendre à la grâce ce qui est à la grâce). En vérité, le système luthérien tout entier apparaît comme une puissante réfutation, en langage théologique, des prétentions transcendantes de la raison, comme l'annonce du criticisme anti-mystique kantien<br>It is astonishing that the one who so clearly proclaimed the highest authority for reason and the full liberty of man on earth was to be held later for one of the worst enemies of human reason and freedom for having denied their value in heaven. The thesis shows that Luther was highly competent in philosophical matters. His works reveal a deep, precise, logical and innovating thought (for example, Luther applied the economy principle on soteriology). Luther's critique of reason is rightly understood when considering the biblical background (the prophetic tradition) and his real intention (render to grace what belongs to grace). The Lutheran system is a one unique refutation, in theological terms, of transcendent reason and announces the Kantian anti-mystical criticism

Abstract:

The aim of the current study was to conduct a psychobiography of the life of Martin Luther King Junior, who was born in 1929 and died in 1968. He was an American clergyman, husband, father, activist, and prominent leader in the African-American civil rights movement. King fought for civil rights for all people. His “I Have a Dream” speech raised public consciousness of the civil rights movement and established him as one of the greatest orators in the United States of America. His main legacy was to secure access to civil rights for all Americans, thereby empowering people of all racial and religious backgrounds, and promoting equality in the American nation. This is a psychobiographical research study which aimed to explore and describe the life of Martin Luther King junior’s psychological development according to Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Developmental Theory. King was selected through purposive sampling on the basis of interest, value, and uniqueness to the researcher. Alexander’s model of identifying salient themes was used to analyse the data which were then compared to Erikson’s theory through a process of analytical generalisation. Limitations of the current study were identified and certain recommendations for future research in this field are offered.

The main purpose of my thesis is a comparative study of the theme ‘God hidden and revealed’ in Luther and Calvin, with a focus on the relation between the hidden God and the revealed God. One of the serious issues debated in theological scholarship is the relation between the hidden God and revealed God. Some say the relation is antithetical, arguing from the apparently dualistic and irreconcilable aspects such as the arbitrariness of God and God as love. Some say that it is identical, seeing that in a single event of revelation, the eye of faith discerns <i>the Deus revelatus, </i>where sense-perception can only find <i>Deus absconditus. </i>While there have been many diverse critical views surrounding the issue of Luther’s God hidden and revealed, not much attention has been given to Calvin’s doctrine of hiddenness of God. Nor has a comparison been made of the relation between the hidden God and revealed God in Luther and Calvin. In this thesis, Luther’s concept of the hidden God is put on the matrix of his central theme of theology of the Cross, a theme which runs through his whole theology. Luther’s hidden God in the theology of the Cross is characterized as the God wearing the mask, who works <i>abscondita sub contrariis </i>in relation to his creature. Compared to Luther, however, this thesis shows that the concept of <i>Deus absconditus </i>is not only as native to Calvin’s theology as it is to Luther’s, but also parallels Luther’s in large parts. If the mask is the trademark of Luther’s hidden God, the idea of ‘accommodation’ can be Calvin’s trademark. The accommodating God speaks to us like a mother babbles to her child, in baby talk. As Luther’s God hides himself in masks to reveal himself, Calvin’s God accommodates himself to our human weakness and sinfulness to reveal himself. Luther’s ideas are deeply rooted in paradox. Much more so than Calvin, Luther describes so sheer and serious a contradiction between God hidden and revealed as to threaten the unity of God hidden and revealed. At the same time, Luther never loses his strong view of unity of God. ‘Unity in contradiction’ in God hidden and revealed can be understood only in <i>Divine paradox, </i>which tells us that contradiction is just in the human eye, not in God’s eye.
