Abstract:
AbstractRV Tauri stars are luminous population II Cepheids which show a characteristic light curve of alternating deep and shallow minima. There are 126 RV Tauri variables in our Galaxy. Using WISE [3.4]-[4.6], [12]-[22] diagram we show that Galactic RV Tauri stars show three main types of IR properties in their SEDs; disc-type, non-IR and uncertain, which does not show a clear characteristic in the SED. We also show that there is a strong correlation between disc-type SED and binarity (Gezer et al. 2015). RV Tauri stars were linked to post AGB stars in early studies (Jura 1986), however, recent studies show that their evolutionary nature is more complex than previously thought (Kamath & Van Winckel 2014, and Manick et al. 2018). In this study, we intentionally selected two RV Tauri stars, GK Car (disc-type) and GZ Nor (uncertain), with different IR characteristics to compare their chemical and photometric properties.

Abstract:
This study investigated overinclusive and overexclusive thinking in chronic and acute schizophrenics, manics and schizoaffective schizophrenics. Comparison groups were comprised of depressives, character disorders, and borderline patients. A concept formation task was developed which allowed for a separate analysis of association and accuracy errors. The major findings were: (a) acute and chronic schizophrenics did not differ from each other but did differ from comparison-control groups; (b) the manic pattern differed from all other groups showing severe overinclusion and minimal overexclusion; (c) schizoaffective schizophrenics shared qualities of both the schizophrenic and manic groups but were equivalent to neither.

Abstract:
To evaluate qualitative differences in the nature of thought disorder, the ‘cloze’ procedure and the Scale for the Assessment of Thought, Language and Communication were used to compare speech samples from schizophrenic, depressive, manic, schizo-affective and normal subjects at two different times. At the acute phase, thought-disordered subjects (schizophrenics, manics and schizo-affectives) were less communicable than non-thought-disordered subjects (depressives and normals). Communicability increased with remission of the more flagrant features of disturbance. Comparison of the thought-disordered diagnostic groups in the rate and pattern of remission of specific features of thought disorder indicated that factors reflecting goal-disrupted cognition distinguished the groups.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between adult mood disorders and childhood psychological trauma in a developing country. METHOD: Adults with and without mood disorders were assessed in a case-control study using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Assessment of childhood trauma included physical and sexual abuse, frequent exposure to violence, and parental loss. RESULTS: In two independent multivariate analyses, after adjusting for potential confounding factors, we found a higher odds ratio for frequent exposure to violence in the community (p = .037) and for physical abuse by parents or caregivers during childhood/adolescence (p = .012) in the group with mood disorders than in the control group. In secondary analyses splitting the mood disorder group in two subgroups (manic episode, and major depressive episodes/ dysthymia), only manic patients showed significantly higher rates of frequent exposure to violence in the community (p = 0.01) and physical abuse during childhood (p = 0.02) than did patients in the control group. In addition, maniac patients had significantly higher rates of sexual abuse than did controls (p = .03). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings document an association between violence during childhood and adult mood disorders, especially for manic patients, in a developing country.

Abstract:
153 patients with primary episode of bipolar affective disorder were divided to three groups: with prevalence of depressive symptomatology (44 men and 75 women), with prevalence of manic symptoms (15 men and 8 women) and with simultaneous presence of depressive and manic symptomatology or with rapid or severe manic symptoms (6 men and 5 women) and were examined using the Rey–Osterrieth test. It was found that they had impaired cognitive functioning whose structure and severity were related to the clinical type of the primary episode. In patients with depressive variant revealed approximately equal deterioration of test performance across all assessment vectors, while reproduction (immediate and delayed) observed synchronous deterioration of indicators, with the degree of deterioration of characteristics between copying and immediate and retarded reproduction. In the manic variant the performance of test is significantly different from the depressive variant. Patients with a manic variant showed the lowest indicators in the presence of individual elements of the figure, accuracy and diligence. At the same time, indicators for most estimation vectors are unstable, varying with immediate and delayed reproduction without some systematicity. Such features reflect on the cognitive functions of the maniac state with its acceleration of the speed of thinking, its chaos, instability of attention, difficulties of concentration and inability to productive activity. In patients with mixed episode, the Ray–Osterrieth test scores reflect complex contradictory tendencies of changes in the affective area, related to the rapid phase change and the presence of opposite affective manifestations. Quantitative values of indicators in patients of this group has an intermediate position between indicators of patients with depressive and manic variants. Common disorders inherent in patients of all groups were distortion of the integrity and symmetry of the figure, contamination of the elements of the figure and the omission of minor details. The differences in the structure and severity of cognitive impairment between men and women are not statistically significant.

Abstract:
The value of color preference as a diagnostic sign was examined by comparing the data of manics, schizophrenics, and normal controls. The rank-order of preference for 8 color cards (blue, green, red, yellow, purple, brown, black, and grey) was determined for a group of 14 bipolar patients (diagnosed by DSM‐III- R) all of which currently showed manic symptoms and who also fulfilled the ICD-9 criteria for affective psychosis. The same data were obtained from 20 ICD-9 schizophrenics and from 29 normal controls (factory workers and psychiatric nurses). The analyses of variance showed no significant differences (p .05) between the 3 groups with respect to preference for any of the 8 colors. Clinicians are cautioned against the use of Luescher's Color Test as a diagnostic tool.

Abstract:
There is paucity of computed tomography (CT) studies from developing countries, where schizophrenia is said to have more favourable outcome and present predominantly with positive symptoms. We highlight the densitometric analysis of frontal and parietal areas, assessed by tracing of regions of interest on the slice that passes through the foramen of Monro and the pineal gland. The relationships of the density values with clinical and CT measures were investigated. Fifty schizophrenics, 14 manic and 41 normal subjects were compared. The schizophrenics were assessed with Andreasen’s scale for negative symptoms, and outcome was based on the social and clinical condition in the past year. There were no significant differences in mean ages and brain slice area across the groups. In analysis of variance, schizophrenics and manics had significantly higher frontal density than normals. Schizophrenics had significantly higher parietal density than manics and normals (p< 0.001). Parietal density was significantly higher than frontal density, for schizophrenics and normals (p< 0.001). For the patients, density values were not significantly correlated with linear CT measures of atrophy (e.g. ventricle: brain area ratio) and duration of illness. Density values were not significantly associated with outcome, presence of negative symptoms, and visual ratings of cortical sulci and central atrophy. Our findings indicate that schizophrenia in developing countries is also associated with non-specific brain abnormalities.

Full text
Abstract:
Research was conducted involving a series of lateral impact tests on a horizontal sled facility by scientists at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). The purpose of the research was to conduct an assessment of the biodynamic response of an anthropomorphic test device (ATD) to support the development of AFRL neck injury criteria. Impacts were completed using a 50th male Hybrid III aerospace ATD due to this ATD being used by the USAF to qualify and evaluate ejection systems. A test matrix was developed to assess ATD response as a function of various seat configurations which were an approximation of the seat configurations used by the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) for previously conducted lateral impact tests of PMHS subjects (post-mortem human subjects). The specially fabricated seat configurations were a rigid seat fixture with a 5-point harness and a padded rigid seat with a 3-point harness. The input acceleration pulses were trapezoidal in shape and varied in peak magnitude from 8.5 to 17 G. The rigid and padded seat configurations both generated fairly linear ATD responses across the input acceleration range. The ATD’s response with the padded seat and the 3-point restraint was greater than the ATD’s response with the rigid seat and the 5-point restraint with the upper neck. The My torque showed the greatest increase from the rigid seat configuration to the padded seat configuration. This highlights the importance of a proper restraint and the importance of controlling the motion of the torso since it could reduce the loads and torques of the unrestrained head and neck, resulting in a lower probability of injury. The lateral impact program with the ATD provided critical impact data to fill data gaps that support the development of the ATD-to-human transfer functions for AFRL’s Multi-Axial Neck Injury Criteria (MANIC) for lateral impact or MANICy calculation. The program also highlighted gaps in human and PMHS head response data in identical lateral impact configurations that would not only improve the current MANICy transfer function but would allow the investigation of the efficacy of using the 6F-MANICy to replace the current MANICy.

Abstract:
The glass beads discovered in various archaeological sites in South Asia and Southeast Asia between the 1st and 13th centuries were generally referred to as Indo-Pacific glass beads. Various shapes and colors of glass beads are found on Kampai Island, Langkat Regency, Sumatera Utara. Collected data of glass beads were obtained from archaeological excavations in Kampai Island. In analyzing varieties of glass beads, this study characterizes the variety of Kampai Island glass beads based on their typology and frequency, i.e., drawn glass beads and wound glass beads. A number of these glass beads are analyzed in the laboratory to identify the composition of the ingredients. In determining the origin of glass beads production, this study used a comparative method on some published research. Through comparison of the findings of glass beads wastes from Arikamedu and glass beads production centers in Papanaidupet (India) and Gudo (Indonesia), the result finds that Kampai Island was a glass beads production site in the Malacca Strait region between 11th–14th centuries. The emergence of Kampai island as a glass beads production site in the 11th century was likely a result of geopolitical conditions. Glass bead making traditions spread to Kampai Island as Cōla Kingdom influences rose in Malacca Strait region after its expansion to several places in that region.

Abstract:
IntroductionThe concept of unipolar mania has been raised, rejected and resurrected by a number of authors, and its true position within bipolar affective disorders is still a subject of debate.Clinical caseA 52-year-old Caucasian woman was presented to the emergency room accompanied by family members because she had seven days without sleeping, exaggerated self-confidence and was engaged in multiple activities.DiscussionAt the mental examination she presented irritability, agitation, elation of mood, verbiage, sexual disinhibition, delusional activity of persecutory content, absence of insight. She had three manic episodes earlier and she didn’t have therapeutic adherence. The patient maintained an optimal level of performance functioning between maniac episodes, and also had no earlier depressive episodes. She described herself as a very creative, original, friendly, outgoing, sociable, responsible person. She had no family history of bipolar disease or other psychiatric disorder. An hemogram, basic biochemical investigations, cerebral TC, ilicits drugs screen and EEG were preformed showing no relevant alterations. She was admitted at an acute care psychiatric unit for 16 days. She had a good response to risperidone 2 mg and 1000 mg of divalproex sodium and to cognitive behavioural treatment.ConclusionDue to her previous 3 and her current manic episodes, without history of depressive symptoms, we concluded by the diagnosis of unipolar mania. Although there are certain sociodemographic and clinical variables that overlap, there does seem to be recent evidence concerning clinical, psychopathological and treatment features indicating a nosological separation of unipolar mania from bipolar mania.

IntroductionMania occurs in higher rates among individuals with HIV/AIDS, especially with the progression of HIV infection, and constitutes an additional risk factor for facilitate the HIV spread.ObjectiveTo provide an overview of secondary mania in HIV-infected patients.MethodsLiterature review based on PubMed/Medline, using the keywords “HIV”, “AIDS” and “mania”.ResultsSecondary mania or AIDS mania may be due to illicit or prescribed drugs, CNS infection with HIV, medical illness, including opportunistic infections. Of these, HIV neurotoxicity has been proposed to be the most important factor in its pathogenesis. Mania AIDS differs from primary mania with regard to clinical presentation, course, management and prognosis. The authors will analyze them. Besides decrease to treatment adherence, maniac symptoms also predispose to HIV risk behaviors, which may lead to further HIV transmission. Importantly, the occurrence of HIV mania may announce the transition from HIV infection to AIDS perhaps before other clinical signs are evident. Early recognition and treatment of manic symptoms with mood stabilisers, antipsychotics and HAART improve quality of life, protect from further cognitive deterioration and decrease mortality. In these patients, medication side-effects toxicity, drug interactions, and adherence require special attention.ConclusionsMania has been associated with HIV/AIDS and in many instances acts as a barrier to achieving best treatment outcomes. Thus, psychiatrists need to be aware of the complexities involved in the emergence of manic episodes in HIV-infected patients in order to deal with them in the most appropriate and effective manner.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

The Canadian public has heard many apologies from various governments and church institutions over the last 20 years. In June 2008 Prime Minister Stephen Harper apologized to First Nations for the federal government’s role in the residential school system. First Nations have also received apologies from the United Church of Canada (UCC) for its participation in these schools. Much of the work being done on the process of apology assesses the apology in order to judge if it is convincing and worthwhile. My work asks the question: are apologies effective in their attempt to make amends for past injustices, or are they examples of what Klein calls “manic reparation”?

Abstract:
One hundred and ten consecutive new patients presenting with major affective disorders were divided into five categories according to pattern of presentation: recurrent manic disorder, recurrent depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, single episodes of manic disorder, and single episodes of major depressive disorder. Manic patients predominated, and recurrent manic disorder was much more frequent than either recurrent depressive or bipolar disorder. The manic and bipolar patients were younger. Females predominanted in all five groups of patients. The two manic groups were less likely to be married, but this was probably a reflection of their younger age. No differences were demonstrated with regard to educational status or occupation. There were no significant differences with regard to sibship position, family size, or polygamous/monogamous parents. Manic patients were more likely to have suffered permanent separation from one or both parents before the age of 12 years. A relatively low proportion of the patients had a positive history of mental disorder among first- or second-degree relatives. Manic and bipolar patients tended to present in hospital relatively early in their illness.

Abstract:
Manic-depressiveness is the name here given to a hypothesized personality continuum that has, at one extreme, manic-depressive psychosis. A Manic-Depressiveness Scale is described, which comprises three scales, Manic Experience, Depressive Experience, and the sum of the two, since they are correlated. 250 undergraduate psychology students at the University of Adelaide and at Goldsmiths' College, London, were administered the Manic-Depressiveness Scale along with 12 measures including the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (Revised). Scores on the total Manic-Depressiveness Scale tended (in order of size of association) to be correlated with Schizotypal Personality (and three subscales), Neuroticism, Magical Ideation, Mystical Experience, Belief in the Paranormal, absence of Social Naïveté, and Psychoticism. Manic Experience showed a pattern of relationships with the above variables broadly similar to that of Depressive Experience but included Creative Personality, while Depressive Experience included introversion. The relationship between manicdepressiveness and schizotypy is discussed.

Abstract:
BackgroundThis post-hoc analysis evaluated whether the efficacy of lurasidone in major depressive disorder (MDD) with mixed features is moderated by the number and characteristics of manic symptoms present at study baseline.MethodsPatients meeting DSM-IV-TR criteria for MDD who presented with two or three manic symptoms (consistent with the DSM–5 mixed features specifier) were randomly assigned to 6 weeks of double-blind treatment with either lurasidone 20–60 mg/d (n = 109) or placebo (n = 100). Finite mixture models were applied to identify latent class patterns of the 10 baseline manic symptoms.ResultsThree latent class profiles were identified: 105 (50.5%) patients had manic symptom profile 1 (MIX 1) with mean MADRS 33.0, mean YMRS 9.2, mean number of manic symptoms 3.8; 63 (30.3%) patients had manic symptom profile 2 (MIX 2) with similar baseline mean MADRS (32.4) and YMRS (9.3) and lower number of manic symptoms 3.5; 40 patients had manic symptom profile 3 (MIX 3) with significantly higher severity scores in MADRS (35) and YMRS (14.9) and mean number of manic symptoms 4.6. A significant moderating effect on change in YMRS score was observed for the “decreased need for sleep” symptom, with greater lurasidone effect size (vs. Placebo) found in patients without vs. With this symptom (P < 0.05).ConclusionsIn this post-hoc analysis of a placebo-controlled trial involving MDD patients with mixed features, absence of “decreased need for sleep” was found to be significantly associated with improvement in manic and depressive symptoms and to moderate the treatment effect on manic symptoms.Disclosure of interestI am full time employee of Sunovion pharmaceuticals Inc.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: Mixed episodes have been described as more severe than manic episodes, especially due to their longer duration and their association with higher rates of suicide attempts, hospitalization and psychotic symptoms. The purpose of this study was to compare the severity between mixed and pure manic episodes according to DSM-IV criteria, through the evaluation of sociodemographic data and clinical characteristics. METHOD: Twenty-nine bipolar I patients presenting acute mixed episodes were compared to 20 bipolar I patients with acute manic episodes according to DSM-IV criteria. We analyzed (cross-sectionally) episode length, presence of psychotic symptoms, frequency of suicide attempts and hospitalization, Young Mania Rating Scale scores, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale scores and the Clinical Global Assessment Scale scores. RESULTS: Young Mania Rating Scale scores were higher in manic episodes than in mixed episodes. There were no differences in gender frequency, CGI scores and rates of hospitalization, suicide attempts and psychotic symptoms, when mixed and manic episodes where compared. Patients with mixed episodes were younger. CONCLUSION: In our sample, mixed states occurred at an earlier age than manic episodes. Contrary to previous reports, we did not find significant differences between manic and mixed episodes regarding severity of symptomatology, except for manic symptoms ratings, which were higher in acute manic patients. In part, this may be explained by the different criteria adopted on previous studies.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyze the effect of the national economic recovery program (PEN) in Indonesia in an effort to increase productivity for MSME actors due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The economic sector, which has also been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, has resulted in many MSMEs experiencing a decline in turnover, even going bankrupt. So the government makes programs through the national economic recovery policy (PEN) to overcome the problems faced by MSMEs. This research is a quantitative research, with the population in the study are all MSMEs in the Gudo Manik-Manik Center, Jombang Regency, which then determined a sample of 73 respondents using the slovin formula. The sampling technique used was probability sampling with the random sampling method, because taking all the population, namely MSME Gudo Manik-Manik Center, had the same opportunity to become respondents. Data was taken using a questionnaire. The research analysis used is multiple linear regression using SPSS 26. The results of the study state that, the tax incentive which is an economic recovery program (PEN) has no effect on the productivity of MSMEs during the COVID-19 pandemic at the Manik-Manik Gudo Jombang Center. Meanwhile, loan restructuring, which is an economic recovery program (PEN) has a significant impact on MSME productivity during the Covid-19 pandemic at the Gudo Manik-Manik Center. Simultaneously, tax incentives and loan restructuring, which are part of the economic recovery program (PEN) have a significant influence on the productivity of MSMEs during the Covid-19 pandemic at the Gudo Manik-Manik Center, Jombang.

Abstract:
SummaryObjectives: The main aim was to describe the gross and histological appearance of the equine manica flexoria and to identify any differences between the forelimbs and hind-limbs. An additional aim was to relate the findings to diagnostic and surgical anatomy of the manica flexoria. Methods: Measurements of the manica flex-oria were made on cadaveric limbs from horses free from pathology within the digital flexor tendon sheath. Histological sections, stained with haematoxylin and eosin and alcian- periodic acid schiff, were evaluated based on three micro-anatomical zones from dorsal to palmar or plantar. The prevalent tenocyte morphology, number, and distribution of blood vessels and nerves were described in each zone. Forelimb and hindlimb measurements were compared using a Students T-test.Results: Proximally, the manica flexoria attaches to the digital flexor tendon sheath via a reflection of areolar tissue. The fibrous manica flexoria is longer in the forelimb (32.0 ± 4.2 mm) than the hindlimb (29.4 ± 3.8 mm) (p = 0.04), with the areolar portion longer in the hindlimb (22.9 ± 5.3 mm) compared to the forelimb (16.7 ± 4.3 mm) limb (p = 0.0005). Histologically, degenerate blood vessels were prevalent in the palmar/ plantar regions and were associated with chondrocyte-like tenocytes, indicative of fibrocartilagenous metaplasia.Clinical significance: The study has provided a detailed anatomical description of the manica flexoria relevant for interpretation of diagnostic and surgical evaluation. Fibrocartilaginous metaplasia occurs on the palmar/plantar surfaces of the manica flex-oria.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To report cases of manic-like behavior induced by fluvoxamine, a selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitor; to review pertinent literature; and to encourage replication of our findings in larger patient samples. DESIGN: Description of a case series of fluvoxamine-induced, manic-like behavior. PATIENTS: Eight patients with depression or obsessive features who developed manic-like behavior after initiation of fluvoxamine therapy. RESULTS: Manic symptomatology resolved in all eight patients following dosage reduction or withdrawal of fluvoxamine. Four patients still are maintained on low-dose fluvoxamine without recurrent manic symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Our case series suggests that fluvoxamine may have the ability to induce or unmask manic behavior in depressed patients. Clinicians are alerted to monitor for this “switching” effect, especially in patients previously or currently treated with neuroleptics or lithium, and in those patients exhibiting characteristics of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Abstract:
The 18-item Manic-Depressiveness Scale was revised via a Rasch ‘top-down purification’ procedure to provide a new 12-item scale with no significant age or sex bias. Application of this scale to previously collected data indicated that patients with manic-depression and schizophrenia receive comparable scores, which are significantly higher than those of a control group of students. Moreover, for a subgroup of patients with manic-depression, scores correlated .55 ( p < 001) with number of manic-depression-relevant medications being taken. These findings lend support to the validity of the Rasch Manic-Depressiveness Scale as a general measure of psychoticism and psychiatric status.

Abstract:
Psychotherapy with manic-depressives, whether individually or in groups, has not had the interest of most psychotherapists. Apart from the suicide risk and the manic chaos, the reasons for this seem to lie in the dynamics and special mode of communication of the manic-depressive and in the personality and training of the psychotherapist. Awareness of this combination of factors is essential in understanding the problems of interaction between the manic- depressive and the therapist.

Twenty schizophrenics, 20 manics, and 20 depressives were given two sets of multiple choice questions, one testing the subject's social knowledge of how people tend to act in a social situation and the other tapping their knowledge of events or objects which are relatively free of a social component. Schizophrenics were significantly impaired on the former set of questions relative to manics, and were significantly worse on both than depressives. It is suggested that these results represent an objective measure of the social naïvete of schizophrenics. The significant difference from manics indicates that the results are not merely the general effects of psychosis, particularly because the manics performed worse on an attentional test than the schizophrenics.
