Russell, Mardi L. "Cost and Throughput Modeling of Manual and Automated Order Fulfillment Systems." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32476.

Full text
Abstract:
The e-commerce revolution has brought about the need for more efficient order fulfillment. Guidelines are needed to determine the order fulfillment system design, and whether a manual or automated system should be implemented. A spreadsheet-based descriptive model has been developed based on demand levels, labor rates, and order sizes. We propose to combine the descriptive model with simulation output to demonstrate reactions of the system to fluctuations in demand, labor rates, and order sizes. The ultimate research goal is to provide a design aid to companies engaged in order fulfillment systems, emphasizing the decision of whether or not to automate the sorting process.
Master of Science

Ehmann, Markus Friedrich. "Developing a methodical approach for the systematic identification of innovative technological applications, based on mixed reality in manual order picking." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/3027.

Full text
Abstract:
The need to be economically successful is the key driver for companies to be innovative and implement new technologies with increasing efficiency and effectiveness. Uncertainty about whether to use new technologies and missing knowledge about their advantages lead to staggering and withholding from fast diffusion of innovations. Focusing on the industry of logistics and the technology Mixed Reality, this research project developed a methodical approach for evaluating the fitness of an innovative technology and a specific process of application. A mixed methods approach was derived, based on interviews and experiments. The main methodologies used, were semi-structured interviews with decision makers in logistics companies to elaborate triggering criteria in the investment process and laboratory experiments for the evaluation of competing technologies. These methods were framed by an initial field experiment and feedback interviews after the analysis for the validation of the approach. The research proved the competitively viable applicability of Mixed Reality and its specific strengths and weaknesses in manual order picking. This set the foundation for possible further development and implementation of the technology. The developed methodological approach proved to be a valid and reliable assessment of the intersection between a technology and specified process of application. This can greatly enhance the speed of implementing new innovations and gaining competitive advantages for companies.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the Summa Angelica de casibus conscientie written by Angelo da Chivasso (d. 1495), first printed in 1486. Angelo belonged to the Observantine branch of the Franciscan Order and was its vicar general four times. Having documented Angelo's life and career, the thesis centres on the construction and purpose of his Summa. It assesses its originality within the tradition of confession manuals and the reasons for its popularity. It argues that the structure is very clear because Angelo intended it for the use of simplices confessores, by which he probably meant priests who did not have a university degree. He arranged his material alphabetically and in the longer sections, paragraphs were numbered, making cross-referencing easy. He included a list of authorities and explained the manner of quoting from them. Not all these features were original, but together they helped to make the Summa popular. There are several noteworthy features of Angelo's Summa. The procedures described had been laid down in earlier manuals, including the need for more rigorous questions - ad status – relating to the profession of each penitent and where this might lead to sin. Angelo however diverged from some earlier authorities by warning about excessive rigour. Circumstances were to be taken into account, and where possible penitents to be given the benefit of the doubt. The number of copies of Angelo's Summa printed throughout Western Christendom during his lifetime and following his death are a tribute to its importance. The period of fame however, was short. Martin Luther was a particularly virulent critic of the Summa, and the Catholic Church changed the method of hearing confessions, making much of it redundant, though it survived for some centuries more as a work of reference for confessors.

Abstract:

Abstract: With this study, I intend to reflect on and to analyze whether the way some argumentative genres are explored in a public school (4th cycle - 7th and 8th grades), in the class of Portuguese Language (in the figure of the LDP and the teacher), in the production of written texts, collaborates for training the producers of these texts. The questions that motivated its accomplishment were: (i) How are some argumentative genres are explored in Portuguese Language classes in the activities of written production of a LDP? and (ii) What effects of LDP's and teachers' teaching are perceived in some texts written by pupils using argumentative genres? To answer them, I developed a study based on interpretivist Applied Linguistics (AL) methodological procedures, focusing on the process of language use. The corpus for analysis consists in some of the proposals of written production of argumentative genres presented by the LDP "Português - Linguagens", by the classes where two teachers developed the activities related to these proposals of production and by the corresponding texts written by the pupils. Data analysis showed that pupils generally are able to produce written argumentative genres. I concluded that they bring to their texts some traces of extra-school knowledge on the production of written argumentative genres as regards the stylistic and thematic marks detected in the texts that were not taught by the LDP or by teachers. This study indicates that much of the knowledge on argumentation pupils show in written texts does not come from the direct contribution of the LDP or the teacher's. It must come, therefore, from pupils' extra- school experiences.
Doutorado
Lingua Materna
Doutor em Linguística Aplicada

Abstract:

Abstract:
This research examines the effects of a daily, ritualistic, intentional practice of Sufi meditation Tamarzok, Sufi Zikr and art making in the life of a female art therapist graduate student, in a transitional professional and developmental stage of life. The general psychology and art therapy literature were examined to look at contemporary understanding in the integration of spirituality and art in mental health. A lack of information in the art therapy literature prompted the interest in the development of this study to respond to this inquiry. This art-centered research informed by a heuristic, phenomenological, dialectical inquiry of self-examination, encompassed the practice of Sufi Zikr and Sufi meditation Tamarkoz as understood from the perspective of the Sufi Order Maktab Tarighat Oveyssi Shahmaghsoudi School of Islamic Sufism, followed by art making as a way of documenting and contextualizing the qualities of the internal and external emotional landscapes to uncover themes and broaden self-knowledge in the support and enhancement of growth and well-being. The data was analyzed by looking at emergent themes. Conclusions drawn aligned the combined practices of art making and spirituality to that of a relational home where the Self and all parts of the psyche can coexist and contextualized for meanings to emerge and healing to take place. The findings of this inquiry were in overall alignment with the reviewed art therapy literature; gaps in the reviewed literature were noted in the exploration of the somatic component of the practice of art making as it relates to healing. Further research is warranted to expand and explore the data and the uncovered areas.

Petchezi, Awedeou. Thesis, Clermont-Ferrand 1, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014CLF10427.

Full text
Abstract:
Legal relations are based essentially on the monetary obligations. The dominant role of money is explained by its legal and economic functions. The daily flow of money transfers attest this importance. If those legal and economic relations are usually located in a limited geographical area, they now follow a movement towards internationalization. The circulation of money also follows the same movement beyond the simple framework of a country. To ensure the funds transfer across borders, various techniques have long time allowed to make international money transfers. Early techniques appeared in fairs of the middle Ages, with the use of commercial paper (bill of exchange or promissory note) and later the check. These traditional instruments which have the characteristic of being based on the paper declined to give way to new techniques. The celerity required by business, has created a need of innovation. It explains the creation of new techniques of money transfer and a new form of currency: the "electronic money”. Another important innovation is the emergence through the computing, "systems" that are a new framework of funds transfers. The foreign element related to international nature of the new techniques of money transfer raises the legal problem of conflict of laws. If for traditional techniques of fund transfer, standardization initiatives (Geneva Conventions on bills of exchange and checks) seem to have solved this problem, there is not presently, any uniform law governing the international use of new techniques of funds transfer. So, is it necessary to consider the nature of contractual relationships which are formed thanks to computing in systems in order to determine a “contract law” able to govern the new techniques of international funds transfers

Marty, Marie. Thesis, Bordeaux, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014BORD0107/document.

Abstract:
Admissibility of evidence is one of the most crucial and complicatedissues in the European Union’s area of freedom, security and justice. However, thedifficulties regarding the use of evidence gathered in one Member State inproceedings in another Member State through the mechanisms of judicialcooperation seems to have been underestimated by the European Union legislator, and this despite the success of criminal proceedings with a cross-border characterbeing considered a priority for the last fifteen years. Indeed, the EU’s criminal policyhas been striving for the strengthening of the efficiency of judicial cooperationbetween judicial authorities. This requires the improvement of the instrumentsdedicated to obtaining criminal evidence. Thanks to the principle of mutualrecognition of judicial decisions in criminal matters, based on mutual trust betweenMember States, the differences between and potential incompatibilities of nationalsystems should not be an obstacle to the free circulation of evidence in the EUcriminal justice area. However, this theoretical justification is not sufficient to ensure mutual admissibility ofevidence, as the good administration of evidence remains a national issue, with awide margin of appreciation accorded to the national judge. Furthermore, both thestudy of national procedural norms and the study of the European Union legalframework show deficiencies, requiring a coherent concept for the protection offundamental rights in criminal proceedings at the EU-level. A better and harmonisedprotection of procedural guarantees is the path to ensure the mutual admissibility ofevidence, overcoming national differences

Abstract:
95
Order batching policy decide the method to combine order to form batch. If the orders with similar picking location are integrated into a batch and are picked in the same picking tour, the order bathing can reduce the total distance of all order finished and promote the efficiency of operation in the manual order picking system. Since batching is an NP-hard problem, this paper proposes a heuristic algorithms base on fuzzy similarity clustering for each of the three routing policies, return, traversal and largest gap. The similar degree of two orders can be recognized effectively by fuzzy similarity. This enables the heuristic to attain the better solution for order batch problem. To verity the efficiency of the heuristic, this paper compares other existing algorithms through computer simulation. The result indicates that the proposed heuristic algorithm has batter performance. Furthermore, the algorithm is quite simple and can be easily applied in practice.

Abstract:
This dissertation develops several efficient order picker routing policies for manual picker-to-parts order picking systems. This work consists of six chapters and is structured as follows. Chapter 1 provides a brief introduction of the dissertation. Chapter 2 then presents the results of a systematic review of research on order picker routing. First, it identifies order picker routing policies in a systematic search of the literature and then develops a conceptual framework for categorizing the various policies. Order picker routing policies identified during the literature search are then descriptively analyzed and discussed in light of the developed framework. Our discussion of the state-of-knowledge of order picker routing shows that there is potential for future research to develop exact algorithms and heuristics for the routing of order pickers, both for order picking in specific scenarios and/or for non-conventional warehouses. One result of the literature review is that prior research on order picker routing always assumed that the picking tour starts and ends at the same location, which is usually the depot. In practice, however, it does not necessarily start and end at the same location, for example in case picking tours are updated in real time while they are being completed. Therefore, Chapter 3 proposes an exact algorithm as well as a routing heuristic for a conventional warehouse with two blocks where the starting and ending points of the picking tour are not fixed to the depot, but where they can be any locations in the warehouse instead. This chapter extends an earlier work of Löffler et al. (2018), who studied the case of a conventional warehouse with a single block, and adapts the solution procedures proposed by Ratliff and Rosenthal (1983) and Roodbergen and de Koster (2001a) that are both based on graph theory and dynamic programming procedure. Chapter 3 also develops a routing heuristic, denoted S*-shape, for solving the order picker routing problem in this scenario. In computational experiments, we compare the performance of the proposed routing heuristic to the exact algorithm. Our results indicate that the exact algorithm obtained tours that were between 6.32% and 35.34% shorter than those generated by the heuristic. One of the observations of Chapter 2 is that the order picker routing problem in non-conventional warehouses has not received much attention yet. Therefore, Chapter 4 studies the problem of routing an order picker in a non-conventional warehouse that has been referred to as the chevron warehouse in the literature. We propose an optimal order picker routing policy based on the solution procedures proposed by Ratliff and Rosenthal (1983) and Roodbergen and de Koster (2001a). Moreover, we modify three simple routing heuristics, namely the chevron midpoint, chevron largest gap, and chevron S-shape heuristics. The average order picking tour lengths resulting from the exact algorithm and the three routing heuristics were compared to evaluate the performance of the routing heuristics under various demand distributions and storage assignment policies used in warehouses. The results indicate that the picking tours resulting from the exact algorithm are 10.29% to 39.08% shorter than the picking tours generated by the routing heuristics. Chapter 5 then proposes an exact order picker routing algorithm for another non-conventional warehouse referred to as the leaf warehouse, and it again uses the concepts of Ratliff and Rosenthal (1983) and Roodbergen and de Koster (2001a). Moreover, it proposes four simple routing heuristics, referred to as the leaf S-shape, leaf return, leaf midpoint, and leaf largest gap heuristics. Similar to Chapter 4, we evaluate the performance of these heuristics compared to the exact algorithm for various demand distributions and storage assignment policies. Our results show that the picking tours resulting from the exact algorithm were, on average, between 3.96% to 43.68% shorter than the picking tours generated by the routing heuristics. Finally, Chapter 6 concludes the dissertation and presents an outlook on future research opportunities.

100
Warehouse operation plays a key role to a supply chain and a proper performance evaluation criterion can aid the designer to quickly evaluate design alternatives for both warehouse configurations and operations. This thesis presents a throughput time evaluation model in a warehousing system with the COI-based storage policy and the traversal policy to analysis the optimal batch size. After deriving the first and second moments of the order-picker’s service time, this study applies these moments to estimate the expected throughput time. Since the arrival of orders follows a Poisson process, the batching time of orders has an Erlang distribution and hence the order picking system under investigation is regarded as an G/G/1 queueing model. This thesis uses the Flexsim simulation package to validate the results generated by the model. The result indicate that the approximation method appears to be sufficiently accurate. Moreover, the effects of batch size and popularity skewness on the travel time are discussed.

88
The distribution center (DC) has to make optimal order picking decisions to satisfy the customers’ demands at reasonable order picking cost during the rapid business flow process. Hence, order picking policies play an important role in a DC and the exact planning can also reduce operational costs of DC. This study integrated the order batching and route planning problems in a manual picking area. In order to obtain a better order picking policy, this study searches for a global solution (or near optimum) by tabu search rather than traditional local search method. Finally, an experimental design was made to analyze some design parameters of the tabu search to the order batching and routing planning problem. The results show that the factors of the exchange method are significant in both solution quality and efficiency.

Abstract:
96
This study investigates an order picking system involving multiple pickers in a warehouse. Travel distance or travel time has usually been employed to measure order-picking efficiency, since most previous studies assumed an order picking system only undertakes single picker operations. However, multiple pickers frequently work in the same area concurrently in an actual warehouse system and congestion inevitably takes place and the traditional travel distance or travel time might not be a proper measure for the system efficiency. Consequently, this study proposes a throughput model for the determination of the picking operation performance for such multiple-picker environment to consider a trade-off between the picking distance and the blocking-caused delay for the storage assignment. The proposed model is first validated by a simulation experiment and then used to compare the throughput of the warehouse under two popular storage assignment strategies with different demand distributions of stock keep units in the order picking system. The study developed a storage assignment heuristic. The objective of heuristic is to maximize throughput rate of order picking system. The study compares the throughput rare for different storage assignment policies and demand skewness. The results show that the heuristic policy is better than another storage assignment policy.

97
The order picking is one of the important and complex operations in the distribution center. The order picking time accounts for 30%~40% of total operation time in distribution center. Hence, a well planned order picking strategy can reduce the operating cost of the distribution center effectively. In this study, the optimal order picking strategies were evaluated. We used two order batching methods (Random Batching and Least Aisle Batching) combined with two route planning methods (Traversal Strategy and Largest Gap Strategy) to determine the initial solutions. Then, we used Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to improve the initial solution and then tried to achieve the optimum solution. Finally, we utilized the MINITAB statistical software to test t the relationships among initial solutions, order picking strategies and the load limit of the picking cart. The results showed that the initial solutions had no statistical significance on the order picking distance. While order picking strategies and load limit had more influence on the order picking distance. We also found that the largest gap strategy had best performance in these simulation test problems.

96
Order picking is the core work in distribution center (DC) that behaves like the heart of the human. If we can reduce the operation time, it will increase the efficiency of the DC. Then, order picking policies play an important role in DC and the better planning can also reduce operation cost. Thus, this study integrated the order batching and two kinds of route planning method (Traversal Strategy and Largest Gap Strategy) to determine the initial solution in three kinds of warehouse configuration. In order to make optimal order picking decisions, we used simulated annealing (SA) to improve the initial solution and then try to find the optimum solution. Finally, we use SPSS statistical software to analyze how importance influence of the order picking distance in the different route planning problems or in the different warehouse design or in the different load limit. The results show that the factors of the exchange method are significant in solution efficiency and quality except that exchange the initial route planning method and load limit. We also found that the square warehouse has the shortest order picking distance, and the largest gap strategy had better performance in these simulation test problems, and when the load limit is 80 units that easy to find the shortest distance.

Abstract:
97
Order picking is a key factor in managing a warehouse efficiently. Generally, there are three significant warehouse policies decisions that determine the efficiency of order picking, picking routing, storage assignment, order batching. Most of previous studies in picker-to-parts warehouse systems investigated only single-picker operations and are therefore adequate to evaluate order picking efficiency by travel distance as aisle congestion never takes place in such systems. In real world applications, the congestion inevitably occurs when a system has multiple pickers working together within the same region. This thesis presents an approximation method base on a GI/G/1 closed queueing network by using self-correcting approximation technique algorithm to evaluate the throughput of an order picking system with multiple pickers and aisle congestion considerations for different routing policies. The results generated by the proposed method are compared and validated via simulation model using eM-plant simulator. The result indicates that the approximation method appears to be sufficiently accurate for practical purposes. The sensitivity analysis of the throughput with respect to order sizes and number of pickers are conducted and the performance of different item storage policies are also evaluated using the proposed approximation model. Moreover, the pick-and-pass system plays an increasingly important role because of the growth of e-commerce and time-based competition. This thesis develops an analytical model for the pick-and-pass system by describing the operation of a picker as a Markov Chain for the estimation of the expected distance traveled of the picker in a picking line. Based on the proposed analytical model, this thesis derives properties of storage assignment and proposes three algorithms that optimally allocate items to storages for the cases of a single picking zone, a picking line with unequal-sized zones, and a picking line with equal-sized zones in a pick-and-pass system.

Abstract:
99
The order picking is one of the important and complicated operations in a distribution center. On the average, the order picking time accounts for 30%~40% of total operation time in the distribution center. Hence, a well planned order picking strategy will reduce the operating cost, manpower and time of the distribution center effectively. Former researches in the order picking problem are focused on the single order or batch order picking policies. However, fewer of them are concerned about the number of cross-aisles in the search of solution quality. This study aimed to apply the Harmony Search (HS) to improve the batch order quantity of the initial solutions with the objective of minimum order picking travel distance. This study also added in multi-cross aisle design (with 0, 1, 3, 4) and used three seed order selection strategies (Random, Smallest Number of Picking Locations, and Smallest Rectangular Covering Area) combined with three accompanying order selection Strategies (Random, Smallest Number of Additional Picking Aisles, and Shortest Average Mutual Nearest Rectangular Distance) to determine the initial solutions with three route planning methods (Traversal, Largest Gap, and Combined). Then, we applied HS to improve the initial solutions for these test problems. The computational performances of each combined method were tested by the statistical software MINITAB. The results showed that order batching methods had no statistical significance on the performances, and the order picking travel distance achieved optimally with the cross aisle quantity equaled to three. Besides, this study also compared with Particle Swam Optimization (PSO) method, the computational results showed that the performances of HS outperformed PSO.

Abstract:
In the context of American imperialism, what role does the interracial/interethnic literary romance play? Do these romances offer the possibility of integrating politically disparate elements, or do these literary unions reveal the conflicts of nation-building at a time of territorial expansion? Drawing upon Doris Sommer's work on heterosexual romances and Robert McKee Irwin's work on homosocial bonds and both authors studies on nation-formation in Latin America, I explore interethnic/interracial unions in works by American and Latino writers and analyze the role these fictional romances and unions serve in representing the inclusion of new peoples and the formation of American national identity at the time of territorial expansion. The texts examined include Helen Hunt Jackson's Ramona, María Amparo Ruiz de Burton's The Squatter and the Don, Elizabeth Van Deusen's collection short story readers, Stories of Porto Rico and Tropical Tales (Porto Rico) and Manuel Zeno Gandía's Redentores. Through their use of the interracial/interethnic romance and unions, I argue that these writers reveal the complications of the larger geopolitical unions being constructed by the United States in the second half of the nineteenth century and early part of the twentieth century. These texts show the potentially subversive power that love, the romance trope, and related themes and homosocial bonds may have in a genre that traditionally emphasizes unions; in addition these works demonstrate that in unions—whether romantic or political—tensions will always persist. Lastly, these texts also demonstrate the frailty of using the nation-as-lovers as the emblematic trope of a nation that will hold within it multiple unions. Issues discussed include how romance is constructed, including the allusions, metaphors, plot devices, and motifs incorporated to tell the story of that romance; representation of these unions in light of United States' anti-miscegenation laws; the construction of consent; education and the lessons of domesticity.
