Abstract:

Abstract:
André Martinet holds an important position in the history of linguistics in the twentieth century. For more than six decades he decisively influenced the development of linguistics in France and in the world. He is one of the spokespersons for French linguistic structuralism, the structuralisme fonctionnel. The article focuses on a description and critical appreciation of the interlinguistic part of Martinet’s work. The issue of auxiliary languages and hence interlinguistics had interested Martinet greatly from his youth and provoked him to examine the matter actively. From 1946 onwards he worked in New York as a professor at Columbia University and a research director of the International Auxiliary Language Association (IALA). From 1934 he was in contact with the Danish linguist and interlinguist Otto Jespersen (1860–1943). Martinet, who went back to Paris in 1955 to work as a professor at the École Pratique des Hautes Études (Sorbonne), increasingly developed into an expert in planned languages; for his whole life, he was committed to the world-wide use of a foreign language that can be learned equally easily by members of all ethnic groups; Esperanto, functioning since 1887, seemed a good option to him.

Abstract:
Summary Read outside its immediate historical context, Languages in Contact (1953) by Uriel Weinreich (1926–1967), most particularly its Preface by André Martinet (1908–1999), contains statements that can seem contradictory and mystifying. Describing his student Weinreich’s book, Martinet characterises bilingualism as “divided linguistic allegiance”, and uses the metaphor of a battlefield to describe the feelings of language variation experienced by bilinguals – but also by monolinguals, suggesting that the mainstream doctrine of languages as self-contained and unified is nothing more than a useful abstraction. Martinet’s own allegiances were divided between loyalty to his student and to his profession, since his own best-known work tended in the direction of the abstraction. All this was taking place in a febrile atmosphere at Columbia University, as “loyalty investigations” were being implemented by the Dean of Students to root out suspected communists – people thought to have allegiances divided between the two sides of the Iron Curtain. This paper tries to make the curious statements in the Preface and the book proper comprehensible by reading them within these professional and political contexts. It considers too how Martinet and Weinreich conceive of the bilingual brain on the model of two nations within a single state.

Isidro Ferrer, Liz. "Implications of Urban Law on Urban Renewal Projects in the Historical Center of Lima." McGill GLSA Research Series 1, no. 1 (2021): 1–28. http://dx.doi.org/10.26443/glsars.v1i1.121.

Abstract:
The Historic Center of Lima currently shows signs of urban deterioration as a result of the processes of exclusion and spatial segregation that have characterized the intense urban growth of the city of Lima. In the face of this urban deterioration, urban renewal processes are an instrument of transformation that acts as surgery for the recovery and reintegration of deteriorated central areas into the functioning of the current city. As a general, urban law regulates urban problems resulting from the transformation of urban lands, including the deterioration of central areas. In particular, actions in traditional central areas have regulations for the protection of cultural heritage. Therefore, the execution of the urban renewal process requires different regulatory instruments to plan and manage the renewal process, which defines its scope. In this sense, the present research has been proposed to address the implementation process of three urban renewal projects in collective housing located in the Historic Center of Lima; "Casa de las Columnas", the "Conjunto de Vivienda La Muralla" and the "Proyecto Piloto Martinete", to identify the effectiveness of the scope of the legal framework of urban renewal, as well as the procedures of intervention in historic centers and monumental areas. Focus on the analysis of the public administration's management, execution, and control activities in the land transformation process of deteriorated traditional urban areas. The article consists of the following parts. First, some conceptual considerations on urban renewal and its relationship with urban law are presented. The next section provides an overview of the state of the regulatory framework for urban renewal in Peru, which is key to contextualize the analysis of the case studies. The third part presents the study methodology and the limitations of the study. The fourth part presents the case studies and develops the scope of the legal framework of urban renewal in the case studies. Finally, some final reflections and conclusions are presented that establish the important elements that should be considered in the legal framework of urban renewal.

Abstract:
The un ou deux phonèmes? problem in PolishThe paper deals with the so-called un ou deux phonèmes? problem in Modern Polish. The framework adopted by the author is the theory and methodology of Axiomatic Functionalism, i.e., a functional semiotic approach developed by Jan W. F. Mulder in association with Sándor G. J. Hervey which is mainly based on linguistic ideas of André Martinet. The analysis focuses on the phonological interpretation of sequences of palatalized labials and [j], nasal diphthongs, and affricates in Polish. The author argues that nasal diphthongs and palatal and retroflex affricates should be interpreted monophonematically, whereas it is both adequate and economical to interpret sequences of palatalized labials and [j] and alveolar affricates as realizations of sequences of two separate phonemes.

Abstract:
Abstract The asbestos industry has always claimed that asbestos is a ‘magic mineral’, which is not replaceable. New findings, however, contradict this because asbestos-free alternatives, with excellent insulating properties, have been available since the end of the nineteenth century. The aim of this current research is to gather evidence of the potential of ‘Martinite’ to replace asbestos. We identified references to ‘Martinite’ in documents and brochures pertaining to insulation of ships, dating back as far as possible by acquiring recent interviews, utilizing records in public libraries and in archives, and conducting web searches. Martinite was produced by a small company called ‘Manifatture Martiny’, founded at the end of the nineteenth century in Turin, Italy. This company was specialized in insulation materials production, such as cork, rubber, foams, and even asbestos. In the early twentieth century, Martinite was utilized in warships of the Royal Italian Navy. During this time, it was patented in Italy and in many other industrialized nations. It was also utilized in construction of civilian power plants and was approved by the Architects Corporation in 1940. Furthermore, it was licenced in 1950 by the Italian National Naval Certification Body (UNAV) to be used on ships. We argue that had Martinite been properly advertised and distributed, it could have been used worldwide in place of asbestos for some applications, resulting in a lower incidence of serious and fatal diseases. The small scale of the company, compared to those of the asbestos multinationals, contributed to the lack of commercial development of the product.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study examines the influence of learning orientation on business performance (achievement of sales and profit objectives) in the context of pure service, specifically that of public accounting services firms. The conceptual framework used in this research has been drawn from marketing, finance, and organizational behavior theory. Specifically, relationships related to learning orientation, sources of competitive advantage, and business performance have been identified. This research tests a framework about learning orientation and its consequences in an accounting services firm. Specifically, this study focused on several research questions, including: 1) Is there a relationship between learning orientation and business performance in terms of the achievement of sales and profit objectives in an accounting services firm?, 2) Is there a relationship between learning orientation and competitive advantage in an accounting services firm?, and 3) Does competitive advantage moderate the relationship between learning orientation and business performance in an accounting services firm?A survey-based research methodology is used to explore these research questions and pertinent findings reported in previous studies (Martinette, 2006; Martinette & Obenchain-Leeson, 2010; Martinette & Obenchain-Leeson, 2012). The findings of this study suggested that as learning orientation increases in public accounting services firms, business performance scores and competitive advantage also increase. The findings of this study did not suggest that competitive advantage moderates the relationship between learning orientation and business performance in public accounting services firms.

Abstract:
During the 1820s Harriet Martineau undertook the writing of tracts and "little books"for the Shropshire publisher Houlston and Son, a firm specializing in religious and didactic literature. This apprenticeship allowed Martineau to master the generic features and literary style of the didactic tract and turn those techniques to new uses in her industrial tales, The Rioters (1827) and The Turn-Out (1829). Later, Martineau transformed the politics of the "little book" in her Illustrations of Political Economy (1832-1834), a series exemplifying the economic theories of Adam Smith, James Mill, David Ricardo, and Thomas Malthus but intending to further the political goals of the Unitarian radicals. This essay argues that Martineau's "little books" were meant as the radical counterpart to Hannah More's Cheap Repository Tracts (1795-1798), a series of moral tales and didactic poems written during the 1790s in order to stifle the revolutionary impulses of the working classes and divert them into religious channels. By using the format and rhetorical features of the "little book," Martineau signals her desire to attract a popular audience and her intention, in the era of the First Reform Bill, to redirect knowledge from a conservative social and religious framework to a progressive,theory-based economics, politics, and literature.

Abstract:
Aim: To study the specific functional condition of the cardiovascular system in primary school-aged children who experienced stress from military actions. Design: Prospective cohort non-randomised study. Materials and methods. There were 730 children under observation: 239 children of the main group lived in the territories where active hostilities took place; the younger schoolchildren of the control group (491 children) lived in territories where military operations were not carried out. The functional state of the cardiovascular system was studied by calculating and determining the parameters of the Martinet–Kushelevsky sample. Results. The study showed that the recovery of heart rate after the Martinet–Kushelevsky test in younger schoolchildren who were in peaceful living conditions occurred faster than in children who experienced the stress of military operations (p < 0.05). The initial study of children who experienced the stress of military operations allowed us to establish not only a longer recovery time of blood pressure (p < 0.001), but also gender differences. The study conducted repeatedly, against the background of the integrated integration program, revealed a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in pulse blood pressure values in all subgroups. Conclusion. In younger schoolchildren who have experienced the effects of active hostilities, the ability of the cardiovascular system to recover after dosed physical activity is sharply reduced; the identified features of the functioning of the CCC in children must be taken into account during physical education lessons at school. Keywords: children, primary school age, cardiovascular system, Martinet–Kushelevsky test.

Abstract:
IN THE PREFACE TO HER twenty-five volume series of novellas, Illustrations of Political Economy (1832–33), Harriet Martineau advertises her attempt to popularize the emergent science of political economy. However, at the same time that she justifies her plan to illustrate various principles of political economy through her use of narrative form, Martineau goes further, arguing for the global scope and significance of this contested and often misunderstood new science. Toward the close of her preface, she writes:

In his celebrated paper [7], Martinet showed the equivalence between the infinitesimal versality and the versality for [Ascr ]- and [Kscr ]-morphisms. By using this theorem, he obtained the following Theorem 1·1 which played one of the key roles for the classification of C∞ stable map-germs ([1, 7]).
