Abstract:

Abstract:
CONCLUSÃO: A adição do extrato etanólico da erva-mate verde foi efetiva em diminuir a reação de Maillard nos modelos de biscoito e lácteos.<br>INTRODUCTION: the Maillard reaction (MR) occurs in processed foods during heating, processing and storage and in biological systems, where it is called glycation. The MR is initiated by the condensation of amino groups of proteins with the carbonyl group of reducing sugars and has special importance in foods, because they promote sensory changes important to the flavor, aroma, color and texture. In biological systems, this reaction are involved in the progression of several diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular complications and neurodegenerative diseases. The Maillard reaction products contribute to increase the endogenous pool of carbonyl compounds. The use of substances or foods that can minimize the formation of these compounds may constitute a strategy to minimize your intake. OBJECTIVES: evaluate the effect of addition of the ethanolic extract of yerba mate in inhibition of the Maillard reaction in model food systems. METHODS: were developed cookies and milk models food systems. The content of Maillard reaction products [Furosine (FUR), hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), carboxymethyllysine (CML) and fluorescent compounds (IF)] were evaluated. The yerba mate extract was obtained by hot continuous extraction and characterized for the levels of phenolic compounds and saponins by liquid chromatography. The contents of the fluorescent compounds (IF) was measured by spectrophotometric method, HMF and FUR were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography and the levels of CML by ELISA. RESULTS: The yerba mate extract contained 155g mg -1 of total phenolics, 76g mg -1 of caffeine, 5g mg of ursolic acid and 3g mg -1 of oleanolic acid. The formation of HMF, FUR and IF in cookie systems was not influenced by the addition of the yerba mate extract. The CML content of the cookie model with yerba mate extract was significantly lower (p<0.05) than the other treatments with heating. The IF milk models added extract were significantly lower (p <0.05) than the IF milk models with heating without extract. CONCLUSION: The yerba mate extract reduced the formation of CML in the cookie system and inhibit the Maillard reaction in the intermediate stage in milk systems.

Abstract:
This thesis presents the development of a software model that simulates a payload instrument onboard the MATS satellite. The goal of this model is to provide an understanding of how the instrument impacts the measured data. This model is important for error analysis and may help in correcting the measured data for systematic flaws in the instrument. The software will consist of 5 main modules as follows: Scene Generator, Optics Module,Stray Light Module, Charge-Coupled Device Module and Electronics Module. This thesis forms a basic foundation for the software by designing the CCD module and a part of the Optics module, and concludes the effects of both on the output of the system. It takes into account important mission defined procedures that ultimately aim to improve image quality, resolve vertical structures in different bandwidths and analyze noise effects on the measured data.

Abstract:
Išnagrinėjus literatūros šaltinius bus pristatytas kontekstinio panašumo formavimo būdas, kurio veikimas tiriamas naudojant dirbtinius ir realius duomenis.<br>Similarity is one of the most important aspects in the area of information retrieval and data mining. A new trend in similarity judgment assumes that similarity between two objects can not be expressed as a fixed value and depends on the context in which the similarity is measured. However no formal definition of context has yet been specified. In this thesis a new formal context definition is proposed and a method to measure contextual similarity is developed. The main idea behind this method is to extract context information from distinct groups of data. This method is tested with synthetic and real-world data sets comparing context similarity measure with distance based similarity. Results indicate that taking the similarity into account may cause significant changes in object similarity. This work shows the importance of context when measuring similarity.

Bottazzi, Emanuele. "Nonstandard Models in Measure Theory and in functional Analysis." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Trento, 2017. https://hdl.handle.net/11572/368322.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the study of nonstandard models in measure theory and in functional analysis. In measure theory, we define elementary numerosities, that are additive measures that take on values in a non-archimedean field and for which the measure of every singleton is 1. We have shown that, by taking the ratio with a suitable unit of measurement, from a numerosity it can be defined a non-atomic real-valued measure, and that every non-atomic measure can be obtained from a numerosity by this procedure. We then used numerosities to develop a model for the probability of infinite sequences of coin tosses coherent with the original ideas of Laplace. In functional analysis, we introduce a space of functions of nonstandard analysis with a formally finite domain, that extends both the space of distributions and the space of Young measures. Among the applications of this space of functions, we develop a continuous-in-time, discrete-in-space nonstandard formulation for a class of ill-posed forward-backward parabolic equations, and on the study of the regularity and asymptotic behaviour of its nonstandard solutions. This approach proved to be a viable alternative to the study of the vanishing viscosity limit of the solution of a pseudoparabolic regularization of the original problem.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with the decomposition both as a solution method and as a problem itself. A decomposition approach can be very effective for mathematical problems presenting a specific structure in which the associated matrix of coefficients is sparse and it is diagonalizable in blocks. But, this kind of structure may not be evident from the most natural formulation of the problem. Thus, its coefficient matrix may be preprocessed by solving a structure detection problem in order to understand if a decomposition method can successfully be applied. So, this thesis deals with the k-Vertex Cut problem, that is the problem of finding the minimum subset of nodes whose removal disconnects a graph into at least k components, and it models relevant applications in matrix decomposition for solving systems of equations by parallel computing. The capacitated k-Vertex Separator problem, instead, asks to find a subset of vertices of minimum cardinality the deletion of which disconnects a given graph in at most k shores and the size of each shore must not be larger than a given capacity value. Also this problem is of great importance for matrix decomposition algorithms. This thesis also addresses the Chance-Constrained Mathematical Program that represents a significant example in which decomposition techniques can be successfully applied. This is a class of stochastic optimization problems in which the feasible region depends on the realization of a random variable and the solution must optimize a given objective function while belonging to the feasible region with a probability that must be above a given value. In this thesis, a decomposition approach for this problem is introduced. The thesis also addresses the Fractional Knapsack Problem with Penalties, a variant of the knapsack problem in which items can be split at the expense of a penalty depending on the fractional quantity.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research study is to propose guidelines for providing a positive user experience for pupils using Dr Math®. User experience was found to have a positive impact on the acceptance and adoption of a product. Thus the proposed guidelines contribute in maximizing the adoption and acceptance of Dr Math® among pupils. This study begins with an introductory chapter that describes the problem that forms the basis for this research. The chapter defines the objectives that this study is intended to achieve in order to accomplish its ultimate goal. The methodology followed to conduct this research study as well as its scope are also defined here. The results from a preliminary survey revealed that despite its potential accessibility, Dr Math® has a low adoption rate. However, when compared to other mobile learning (m-learning) applications for mathematics learning, Dr Math® is more popular. Thus Dr Math® was selected as a case for study. Chapter 2 of this study provides a detailed description of Dr Math® as a local mobile application for mathematics learning. It was found that the affordability and accessibility of Dr Math® did not necessarily imply a high adoption rate. There are various possible barriers to its low adoption. User experience (UX), which is the focus of this study, is one of them. Thus, a subsequent chapter deals with UX. Chapter 3 discusses UX, its scope, components and definition and places particular emphasis on its significance in the success of any product. The chapter also highlights the characteristics of a positive UX and the importance of designing for this outcome. In Chapter 4, a discussion and justification of the methodology used to conduct this research is discussed. This study primarily employs a qualitative inductive approach within an interpretivism paradigm. An exploratory single case study was used to obtain an in-depth analysis of the case. Data was collected using Dr Math® log files as a documentary source. Gathered data was then analysed and organized into themes and categories using qualitative content analysis as outlined in Chapter 5. Also the findings obtained from the results, which are mainly the factors that were found to have an impact on the user interaction with Dr Math®, are presented here. The identified factors served as a basis from which the guidelines presented in Chapter 6 were developed. Chapter 7 presents the conclusions and recommendations of the research. From both theoretical and empirical work, it was concluded that Dr Math® has the potential to improve mathematics learning in South Africa. Its adoption rate, however, is not satisfying: hence, the investigation of the factors impacting on the user interaction with Dr Math®, from which the proposed guidelines are based.

Abstract:
Since the development of quantum mechanics it has been natural to analyze the connection between classical and quantum mechanical descriptions of physical systems. In particular one should expect that in some sense when quantum mechanical effects becomes negligible the system will behave like it is dictated by classical mechanics. One famous relation between classical and quantum theory is due to Ehrenfest. This result was later developed and put on firm mathematical foundations by Hepp. He proved that matrix elements of bounded functions of quantum observables between suitable coherents states (that depend on Planck's constant h) converge to classical values evolving according to the expected classical equations when h goes to zero. His results were later generalized by Ginibre and Velo to bosonic systems with infinite degrees of freedom and scattering theory. In this thesis we study the classical limit of Nelson model, that describes non relativistic particles, whose evolution is dictated by Schrödinger equation, interacting with a scalar relativistic field, whose evolution is dictated by Klein-Gordon equation, by means of a Yukawa-type potential. The classical limit is a mean field and weak coupling limit. We proved that the transition amplitude of a creation or annihilation operator, between suitable coherent states, converges in the classical limit to the solution of the system of differential equations that describes the classical evolution of the theory. The quantum evolution operator converges to the evolution operator of fluctuations around the classical solution. Transition amplitudes of normal ordered products of creation and annihilation operators between coherent states converge to suitable products of the classical solutions. Transition amplitudes of normal ordered products of creation and annihilation operators between fixed particle states converge to an average of products of classical solutions, corresponding to different initial conditions.

Abstract:
Malaria is a vector borne disease that has been plaguing mankind since before recorded history. The disease is carried by three subspecies of mosquitoes Anopheles gambiae, Anopheles arabiensis and Anopheles funestu. These mosquitoes carry one of four type of Plasmodium specifically: P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae or P. ovale. The disease is a killer; the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that about 40% of the world's total populations live in areas where malaria is an endemic disease and as global warming occurs, endemic malaria will spread to more areas. The malaria parasite kills a child every 30 seconds. In Africa alone, as many as one million children die annually from malaria before they reach the age of 5. The World Health Organization has an estimate of 100-200 million victims annually. Malaria has many mathematical models and this paper will examine several different models in order to achieve a greater understanding of this disease.<br>M.S.<br>Department of Mathematics<br>Sciences<br>Mathematics
