Social media has penetrated into our lives, triggering engagement both online and offline. However, the current research is limited to the exploration of online engagement, so this study expands the scope of research to offline, and explores the impact of media dependence on online and offline communication based on media-system dependency. This study adopts the method of questionnaire and selects three topics of clothing, food, and sports events to provide data support. The results of the study show that similar to common topics such as clothing and food, online engagement has no effect on offline communication, and for topics of sports events with certain interest orientation, media dependence will not affect its offline communication.

Abstract:
The purposes of the current study are (1) to conceptualize and test a social networking service (SNS) dependency measure and (2) to propose and test a general model of the effect of SNS dependency on online and offline interpersonal storytelling. This study is theoretically guided by media system dependency theory and communication infrastructure theory. Computer-assisted personal interviews (CAPI) were conducted with 477 SNS users aged 19–59 in Seoul in October of 2012. Confirmatory factor analyses results showed that our SNS dependency measure was valid and reliable. The results also confirmed that SNS dependency had direct effects on individual users’ levels of engagement with interactive activities on SNSs and indirect effects on offline interpersonal storytelling.

Abstract The paper questions the pervasive western intellectual universalism which disregards Global South imaginations for generalized approaches. Using field data from Uganda about Community Audio Towers (CATs), the western-generated community media theory is interrogated, accentuating its failure to account for the intricate relationship between the individual, society, and small media. To cover the gap, the Small Media System Dependency theory is herein introduced as a geocultural response to lack of theory from the South.

Abstract:
This study proposed a conceptual framework for extending Media System Dependency (MSD) Theory in the study of Social Media Dependency (SMD). The framework is proposed based on in-depth analysis of determining influencing factors from social media dependency perspective. Extensive review of literature on three different domains namely social system, social media system and entrepreneurial system was carried out to propose the conceptual framework. Books and research articles on social media dependency or addiction were also consulted to see the emerging trends in global management and communication settings. Drawing from MSD Theory, a determining system; entrepreneurial system was proposed that highlights the factors that can play important roles in developing SMD among Gen Zers. It is argued that potential entrepreneurs, education, and entrepreneurial intention are a few of the important entrepreneurial elements in social media usage which can significantly develop Gen Zers SMD. It has also been proposed that MSD theory is known for making individuals develop dependency relations with the media if they find the resources provided by the media helpful in accomplishing various goals. This study is conceptual in nature. Proposed hypotheses need to be verified empirically, and this study is the first of its kind to observe Gen Zers SMD from three lens namely social system, social media system and entrepreneurial system simultaneously. The idea will significantly add value to MSD Theory, SMD and generational cohort’s literatures.

The present article examines the elites’ dependence on diffusion media and communication media within the Luhmannian system theory. Through the use of a media concept from medium-theory and concepts from research on elites, three levels of dependency emerge: the diffusion media, the media of the system and leadership as the specific communication medium of elites, which is dependent on the state of the three media. The hypothesis is that the specific form of elites has specific, epochal media dependencies, and this becomes evident in the present in social scientific research.

: Guided by the theory of reasoned action and media system dependency theory, this study examined attitude towards genetically modified foods (GMF) among university students in Kunming, China, as well as personal and media factors related to such attitude. Data were collected from an online survey with 467 university students across eight universities in Kunming. Results showed that attitude towards GMF were more negative than positive. Moreover, food neophobia and media attention were negatively associated with attitude towards GMF. In contrast, perceived benefit was positively associated with attitude towards GMF. Although the interaction between media dependency and media attention was significant, simple slope analysis confirmed that the interaction slopes were nonsignificant, suggesting that media attention did not moderate the association between media dependency and attitude towards GMF in this study. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract:
The Social Media landscape is characterized by constant and rapid changes, with new platforms emerging in the market and existing ones evolving by integrating new features. Amidst this dynamic environment, the phenomenon of Social Media Dependency (SMD) has become particularly salient. This study seeks to explore individual usage behavior on Social Media with a specific focus on SMD. In contrast to previous research that predominantly examines Social Media addiction, our emphasis lies on the utilitarian, rational, and goal-oriented aspects of Social Media usage. We analyze the impact of individual attitudes on SMD by integrating expectancy-value theory with media system dependency theory. Specifically, this paper investigates how one particular social axiom construct – Societal cynicism – influences SMD, taking into account the variations in the usage patterns between two widely used Social Media platforms: Facebook and YouTube. Through the development and validation of a research model, this research aims to shed new light on understanding the dependency phenomena within the context of Social Media.

Abstract:
Through the theoretical frameworks of the media system dependency model and uses and gratifications theory, this study examined the uses of social media by Syrian refugees in Jordan and Turkey. A mixed-methods approach was used to increase the credibility and validity of the study’s findings by combining a qualitative method with quantitative data. The findings show that there were some factors that affected the Syrian refugees’ use of social media before seeking refuge in Jordan and Turkey, which were mainly its ban due to the regime’s censorship and a bad Internet connection due to the bad infrastructure. The absence of these two factors led to an increase in their social media dependency after seeking refuge. There are variances in which social media sites Syrian refugees use the most and why. The majority relied on Facebook for various reasons, and this dependency had varying repercussions on individuals. Furthermore, many immigrants were acquainted with new platforms, implying that refugees became social-media-literate and participated in the updates of the new platforms, even if such sites were not well known to the general public. The Syrian refugees’ dependency on social media varies from person to person due to differences in personal goals, social status, locations, living characteristics, and easy access to the Internet. Furthermore, this dependency on social media has different effects on them according to the media system dependency model. The refugees become increasingly dependent on social media to satisfy their needs and, because of that, social media dependency will become more important in their lives and will increase its influence and effects on them. Furthermore, the study found that the Syrian refugees depended on social media for various gratifications, such as educational, work, and business; information access; cultural and social aspects; connecting with networks and families; establishing friendships; learning new skills; self-expression; making business; and finding work, in addition to reaching routes and contacting smugglers to help them leave the country.

Abstract:
This paper uses the “Media System Dependency Theory” proposed by American communication scholars Paul Rockich and Melvin DeFleur as a research framework to investigate the deep-seated reasons for the dependence of Chinese international students on Jitterbug in social media, and to propose countermeasures. Overseas students are an important force for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, and their values will influence the values of the whole society in the future. The international students are in the period of value formation and cognition, so it is very important to grasp the cognition formation in this period. With the advent of the mobile Internet era, short video social media, represented by Jitterbug, has become one of the most popular leisure and entertainment platforms for international students. However, while Jitterbug has brought rich experiences to young people, some negative effects have come along with it. Many international students seem to be inseparable from Jitterbug, gradually developing into a strongly sticky “relationship chimera”. It can be said that tens of thousands of international students not only cannot leave Jitterbug, but also gradually develop a kind of “dependency syndrome”—spending a lot of time and energy indulging in it, experiencing negative effects such as reduced attention span and indifferent interpersonal communication, and becoming doubly dependent on Jitterbug in terms of emotion and behavior. This study aims to examine the effects of the dual dependence on Jitterbug. Therefore, this study hopes to analyze the dependence of international students on Jitterbug as a social media and propose countermeasures to improve the media literacy of international students.

Abstract:
Social Networking Services (SNS) exert a substantial influence in the digital realm. For marketers and entrepreneurs, comprehending the nuances of potential consumer interaction with SNS is pivotal to craft optimal communication strategies. Consequently, deciphering the determinants that either encourage or hinder individual SNS usage behaviors becomes imperative, as it fosters deeper insights into users' continuance intentions and facilitates the building of robust relationships. Drawing upon the Media System Dependency (MSD) theory, this research addresses two main questions: 1) How do individuals' MSD relations, encompassing Understanding Dependency (UD), Orientation Dependency (OD), and Play Dependency (PD), satisfaction (ST) within the SNS context? 2) Does satisfaction subsequently enhance their continuance intention (CI) towards the SNS? To address these queries, we scrutinized data amassed from 393 online Weibo users in China. Participants, all of whom possessed prior Weibo experience, were invited to partake in a comprehensive survey. The proposed hypotheses were rigorously examined using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The analysis revealed that the three delineated MSD relations significantly bolstered participants' ST, which in turn robustly influenced their CI. This study's findings shed invaluable light on the nexus between MSD relations and SNS engagement, offering meaningful implications for both academics and SNS practitioners. Future research endeavors are encouraged to expand upon these insights and further fortify our understanding of the topic.

Abstract:
Since the return of Hong Kong to Chinese Rule, it has been a unique region in terms of administration and legal system, embracing some characteristics of former British rule while also edging closer to assimilation with the wider Chinese state and its mandates. This assimilation reached a turning point in 2019 with region-wide protests centered around a proposed move toward an increase in democratic processes in Hong Kong in response to a bill allowing extradition of Hong Kong citizens to the Chinese mainland, a rebuffing of Beijing’s control of the area. The protests captured international attention as primarily younger residents of Hong Kong took to the streets in an effort to delegitimize mainland control. Older residents of the city more closely favored the Chinese government and its regulations. Beijing countered the pro-democracy propaganda of protestors with extensive use of the media. Agenda setting theory, the theory of exposure learning, and dependency theory provide the lenses through which the overall success of the Chinese government can be observed and understood. Chinese media outlets framed the issue as one of disorder and linked that disorder to foreign media and foreign governmental intervention. China emphasized security and national sovereignty more explicitly and robustly than demonstrators which lead to an increase in exposure to Beijing’s viewpoints over pro-democracy propaganda. These elements were made all the more successful by the dependency of the urbanized and industrialized population of Hong Kong on the media for information and viewpoint dissemination. Dependency theory and its effects during the demonstrations made agenda setting and exposure learning more effective than they would have been alone in setting the tone of the conversation around the future of Hong Kong. Chinese utilization of media techniques and information dissemination ultimately proved successful in promoting Beijing’s control of the region which demonstrates the importance of mass media and its reach and effects in urban areas especially.

Abstract:
This study takes as a starting point the importance and dependence of the media to obtain information about the pandemic. The dependency theory of the media system was developed in the 1970s when mass media were the dominant source of information. Today, at a time when media choices have become abundant, studies are needed to understand the phenomenon of media dependence in light of new dimensions made important by the transformations that have taken place in the social and media fields—where the coexistence of mass media with social media platforms stands out. As large-scale crises rarely occur and the media environment changes rapidly, it is important to analyze how media dependence relates to choose and trust in different media (traditional media vs. social media) in times of crisis. Several questions arise. What is the trust attributed by individuals to social media as sources of information about COVID-19? How well informed are the individuals who choose these sources as the main sources of information? From a questionnaire administered to 244 individuals in Portugal, during the first week of the state of emergency (March 2020), this research seeks to identify how people gained access to information about COVID-19, how they acted critically towards the various sources and how they assess the reliability of different media. Finally, it analyzes the association between the type of medium chosen and adherence to misinformation content about the virus. The results reveal the existence of a phenomenon of dependence on the media, with a strong exposure (both active and accidental) to informative content, with conventional media being privileged as the main source, and positively distinguished in terms of confidence. Finally, a statistically significant association of a positive sign was identified between the use of social media as the main source and the acceptance of misinformation.

Abstract:
This study investigates whether wartime conditions erode the media’s critical distance from official discourse, focusing on the early phase of the War on Terror. Drawing on Media System Dependency theory and the Propaganda Model, it analyzes eight speeches by President George W. Bush and 112 USA Today articles published between September 11 and October 12, 2001. The study employs thematic analysis. The results reveal that immediate press coverage was markedly aligned with presidential rhetoric, reproducing themes such as moral absolutism, civilizational binaries, dehumanization, and retributive justice. The findings suggest that in moments of national crisis, heightened public reliance on the press—combined with structural constraints—facilitates media alignment with official discourse. This convergence underscores the vulnerability of journalistic autonomy in times of war.

Abstract:
Modern media has transformed into a full-fledged industry, embedded in the national economy and inextricably linked with other industries. The strong dependence between the main economic indicators of the media industry and macroeconomic indicators determines the importance of a long-term media strategy. A successful strategy of media system development may improve the national economy and ensure social prosperity in the sense of Aristotelian eudaimonia. The research objective was to develop a new methodology for media strategizing with its mission, values, objectives, and strategic priorities. The study was based on strategy theory, media theory, mathematical economics, econometric methods of strategic media monitoring, and a new method of game-theoretic models of the three-sided market. The object of strategizing was a complex multi-level environment formed by media institutions in their interaction with each other and society, media market, infrastructure, manufacturers, developers, and distributors. The Russian media system was subjected to a primary OTSW analysis, which revealed five priorities. The author developed a quantitative assessment methodology for each priority. The research is a foundation for a separate interdisciplinary discipline “Theory of Media Strategy”.

Abstract:
Advertising recall is one of the categories of measures of the cognitive response which have been developed. What remains a dilemma to advertisers is whether there is a correlation between recall of advertising and brand preference or not? This study sought to determine the relationship between advertising recall and brand preference among young communication students in Accra. Expectancy Value Theory and Media System Dependency Theory were used. The study adopted simple random sampling procedure to respond to two propositions: 1. That there is no relationship between advertising recall and purchase of product or service; 2. That there is no relationship between advertising recall and brand preference. Findings indicate that relationship between advertising recall and brand preference is significant. Majority of the respondents also emphasized that, in the future, their next choice of brand will be based on ‘efficiency of service'.

Abstract:
Studies on the Chinese government’s online response present diverse voices and perspectives, but consensus cannot be reached. The literature has constantly ignored the construction of an online media mechanism, which includes professional positions and standardized procedures that were designed inside the online media to process information and facilitate an effective government response. Does the reconstruction of an online media mechanism benefit the effectiveness of government response? If so, how? From the perspective of the media mechanism, what are the influential factors for the effectiveness of government response and how do they work to exert this impact? Engaging with the media system dependence theory, I conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews with the editor at the Beijing Municipal Government Website and official document drafters at prestigious research institutions. In conversation with the political system theory, multinomial logistic regression was used to analyze the daily government response data covering the period from 2019 to 2020. This article argues that the innovations in the mechanism inside the online media system can outsource some information management functions from the political system to the online media system. These innovations also assist in partial power transfer from the political system to the media system to achieve an effective government response. The political system faces dual pressure, including content pressure and time pressure, regarding its online response.

Abstract:
PurposeThe problematic use of social media progressively worsens among a large proportion of users. However, the theory-driven investigation into social media addiction behavior remains far from adequate. Among the countable information system studies on the dark side of social media, the focus lies on users' subjective feelings and perceived value. The technical features of the social media platform have been ignored. Accordingly, this study explores the formation of social media addiction considering the perspectives of users and social media per se on the basis of extended motivational framework and attachment theory.Design/methodology/approachThis study investigates the formation of social media addiction with particular focus on WeChat. A field survey with 505 subjects of WeChat users was conducted to investigate the research model.FindingsResults demonstrate that social media addiction is determined by individuals' emotional and functional attachment to the platform. These attachments are in turn influenced by motivational (perceived enjoyment and social interaction) and technical (informational support, system quality and personalization) factors.Originality/valueFirst, this study explains the underlying mechanism of how users develop social media addiction. Second, it highlights the importance of users' motivations and emotional dependence at this point. It also focuses on the technical system of the platform that plays a key role in the formation of addictive usage behavior. Third, it extends attachment theory to the context of social media addictive behavior.

Abstract:
This study provides a longitudinal, cross-national account of the relationship between negative news coverage and consumer confidence across all twenty-eight European Union (EU) member states for the period 2005–2017. We rely on an extensive data set of international news agency coverage and a range of economic indicators retrieved from Eurostat. Employing fixed-effects pooled time series and multilevel models, we demonstrate that negative news coverage is negatively associated with consumer confidence, generally. Confirming our hypotheses grounded in media system dependency theory, more specifically, this association was stronger for the sociotropic attribute of consumer confidence than its egocentric attribute. Moreover, the association weakened under circumstances where unemployment was rising as well as in those countries that faced the most severe consequences of the financial crisis. Altogether, news coverage matters especially when people are affected less directly by the consequences of economic downturn.

Abstract:
Subject. The article deals with two main confidence issues, i.e. economic agents’ choosing the bearer of the institution of money and assessment of confidence in the monetary unit. Objectives. The purpose is to perform a comprehensive study of the main problems of trust in money in economic relations, to assess the elements of trust that lie in the way of economic agents' choice of forms of money, and to characterize our approach to the assessment of trust. Methods. The study rests on the methodology of the new institutional economic theory, using methods of comparative, logical, and statistical analysis. Results. We revealed a five-level hierarchical structure of trust in money that demonstrates the formation of trust in the monetary unit through the trust in the State, that is, the arrangement of the national monetary system and the reputation of monetary organizations, as well as through the trust in the functions they perform. We unveiled indicators of trust that are under the influence of endogenous and exogenous political, institutional, economic, functional, and socio-psychological factors, and that are subject to quantitative assessment. Conclusions. Trust in the institution of money is characterized by dependence on the designated endogenous and exogenous factors, which include the identified indicators of trust assessment, and which influence an individual's choice of a certain form of money. According to our own approach, it is advisable to evaluate trust in terms of its presence or absence, which, in turn, can be determined through the presence of a doubt factor in respondents.

Purpose Focusing on social network services (SNS), the purpose of this paper is to propose a research model to investigate individuals’ SNS usage facilitators and inhibitors from the perspective of individuals’ media system dependency (MSD) and privacy concerns. Design/methodology/approach The research model will be tested with data collected from online users of Facebook. The survey yielded a total of 403 responses for the data analysis which was conducted by measurement and structural models. Findings The findings indicate that SNSs members strive for understanding, orientation, and play dependencies which facilitate their satisfaction and social presence, and subsequently fosters their continuance intention toward the SNS. In addition, the members’ privacy concerns decrease satisfaction and social presence online. Originality/value First, this study has contributed to the authors’ understanding of an individual’s SNS facilitators and inhibitors from the theoretical perspective (i.e. MSD theory and privacy concerns). Second, satisfaction is a strong antecedent of continuance intention and would dilute the effect of social presence on an individual’s SNS continuance intention.

Abstract:
The thesis of this paper applies to the mediatization of politics process during American presidential campaign of 2008. It is entrenched in the theory of political communication. Because of the primary assumptions in the analysis below, political communication is considered mainly from perspective of the models of relations between the mass media and politics, which are treated as systems. It is justified because those relations influence the abovementioned systems and play the biggest role in affecting mass society and culture. In this thesis, the public is considered as having less influence on entire process of political communication. In order to clarify the subject of the research, the division into structural and functional mediatization was created. Structural mediatization, which is the main subject of the analysis, occurs when structures of the media and political systems come into dependence and subordination relation. Parts of the media system dominate over the analogical elements in the political system, internalizing media logic. Individual elements of the political world comply to the media logic and the media orders. Subjects of the political system implement political marketing methods to use the dominant role of the media in the process. Functional mediatization can be defined as a transfer of systemic relations at the smallest possible level – specific case in micro scale, when the medium controls a political actor. Here, the mediatization takes its most radical form. The medium on every stage of constructing the political reality can manipulate and deform a media political reality

Abstract:
AbstractHuman–animal relations in post-industrial societies are characterized by a system of cultural categories that distinguishes between different types of animals based on their function in human society, such as “farm animals” or “pets.” The system of cultural categories, and the allocation of animal species within this cultural classification system can change. Options for change include re-categorizing a specific animal species within the categorical system. The paper argues that attempts by political actors to adapt the institutional system to cultural change that calls for re-categorization of certain animal species can start a contradictory process that may lead to long-term survival of the respective institution despite the cultural change. It is common to explain the persistence of political institutions with institutional path dependency or policy preferences of the governing parties. This paper introduces a new institutional theoretical approach to the explanation, the approach of “rejecting changing a part for fear of undermining the whole.” This paper uses a case study of a series of failed political efforts to change the treatment of dogs in the framework of the agricultural human–animal policy in the Federal Republic of Germany in the second half of the twentieth century, to evaluate its theoretical argument, using analyses of historical political documents, mass media, and communication documents between civil society actors and policymakers. This paper makes an innovative contribution to the theory and research on institutional change, the sociology of agriculture and food, and the sociology of human–animal relations.

Abstract:
In this paper, the ionization constants (pKa) of some nitrogen-containing organic bases (monoethanolamine, diethanolamine and triethanolamine) in water-ethanol, water-acetone and water-acetonitrile solutions at various concentrations of organic solvent in the studied systems have been determined by the potentiometric titration method. It was found that the values of pKa of monoethanolamine, diethanolamine and triethanolamine in aqueous-organic solutions naturally decreases with increasing concentration of organic solvent in the system. It was shown that their nature and the physico-chemical properties of the medium are significantly influenced by the nature and degree of change in the electron donor ability of the studied nitrogen-containing organic bases. It should be noted that for the studied nitrogen-containing organic bases (monoethanolamine, diethanolamine and triethanolamine), when passing from an aqueous medium to an organic one (ethanol or acetone or acetonitrile), the pKa values naturally decrease with an increase in the content of the organic solvent in the system. In general, in the transition from an aqueous medium to an organic one (ethanol or acetone or acetonitrile), a change in pKa can reach 1.73 units. It was established that the dependence of the values of pKa of nitrogen-containing organic bases which were determinate via potentiometric titration method on the inverse of the dielectric constant of water-ethanol and water-acetone or water-acetonitrile solutions tends to be linear, consistent with Izmailov’s theory. Thus, we can conclude that the change in the ratio of the mixed solvent components and, as a result, in general, dielectric permeability of the medium does not lead to a significant change in the solvation characteristics of the studied nitrogen-containing organic bases.

Abstract:
The article presents a comparative analysis of stresses associated with a crack tip in an anisotropic medium with cubic symmetry of elastic properties under mixed mode loading conditions, using two different approaches: atomistic and continuum approaches. The atomistic approach is based on the use of the molecular dynamics method implemented in the open source Large-scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator (LAMMPS). The continuum approach is based on the classical theory of elasticity of anisotropic media, in which the mechanical fields associated with the crack tip are represented using series that generalize the well-known representation of M. Williams to the case of anisotropic media. Using the method of molecular dynamics, a large series of calculations of loading of single-crystal copper and aluminum plates with a face-centered crystal lattice, weakened by a central crack, was carried out using the embedded atom potential (EAM). Molecular dynamics modeling is aimed at determining atomistic stresses and strains near the crack tip. The calculated atomistic stresses were compared with the stress field determined by the continuum theory of elasticity of anisotropic media for crystal lattices with cubic symmetry of elastic properties. A comparative analysis was carried out for the angular dependences of the stress and strain tensor components at different distances from the crack tip for the entire range of mixed strain modes: from perfect normal tension to loadings close to perfect transverse shear. It is established that the fields found on the basis of two fundamentally different approaches (discrete and continuum) are fully consistent with each other. It is demonstrated that the mathematical methods of continuum fracture mechanics can be used to describe stress, strain, and displacement fields at the atomistic level.

Several societal issues were resulting from the epidemic across the world. In such a situation there is a dire need to switch traditional methods of teaching and learning to Learning management systems in the educational sector. A casual learning process was aided by the approval, adaptation, and utilization of the LMS, E-Portal in this scenario. A Media System Dependency Theory approach is used to analyze the effects of e-portal LMS Acceptance and its impact on educational performance and results as well. In Islamabad, Pakistan, n= 300 students from Allama Iqbal Open University participated in the study. During the Covid-19, quantitative analysis revealed that there were some differences between the genders in the approval of the Aaghi LMS Portal as an e learning platform. Similar results were found between female students and traditional learning, as well as male students and their acceptance of Aaghi LMS Portal as an e-learning platform. As a result of the inferential statistics, students' academic achievement throughout Covid-19 was positively affected by Aaghi LMS Portal as an e-learning Platform. Researchers found that gender disparities moderately hinder the Aaghi LMS Portal as an e-learning platform during the Covid-19 pandemic. It has been proved that E-learning improves academic accomplishment, but decision-makers must rethink existing strategies to guarantee that the Aaghi LMS Portal as an e-learning medium is equally appropriate for all students, regardless of their background. Subject. The article addresses scientific and technical risk and financial losses of the customer in the process of research and development works on the creation of complex technical systems. Objectives. The study aims at constructing and analyzing the dependence of scientific and technical risk and financial losses of the customer on the planned volume of development works and the financial resources invested in them. Methods. We apply methods of probability theory and mathematical statistics, system and regression analysis, risk assessment and management. The paper rests on data on completed development projects for complex technical systems creation. Results. We formulated methodological provisions for assessing scientific and technical risk, arising in the process of development works on complex technical systems. The paper presents an algorithm for calculating the expected financial losses from works implementation. The problem of minimizing financial losses associated with scientific and technical risk is formulated and formalized. The feasibility of proposed provisions and recommendations is confirmed by a practical example. Conclusions. To assess risks, it is important to consider the impact of the degree of difference between the main characteristics of developed product and its prototype on the required amount of works at development stage. This enables to build regression dependencies of the volume of works at the development stage on a specified factor, which are later used to assess the scientific and technical risk and associated financial losses.

Aim of the Study: Based on the Media System Dependency theory, the study aims to investigates the mediating effect of academic amotivation between smartphone addiction and academic procrastination. The literature shows that new media technologies, especially smartphones have both positive and negative effects on users. Methodology: In this study researchers used cross-sectional research design and is quantitative study which employed survey method to collect data from students. The sample constituted (N=896) university students from undergraduate and graduate programs. Information was obtained on three rating scales i.e., Problematic Use of Mobile Phone Scale (Merlo et al., 20003), Academic Motivation Scale-College version (Vallerand et al., 1992), and Academic Procrastination Scale-short form (Chakraborty & Chechi, 2019). Findings: The findings indicate significant positive correlation between smartphone addiction and academic procrastination (r = .56, p < .01), smartphone addiction and academic amotivation (r = .34, p < .01), and academic procrastination and academic amotivation (r = .41, p < .01). The regression model suggests that smartphone addiction positively predicted academic procrastination (model 1: β = 0.57, p < .05; model 2: β = 0.48, p < .05). Academic amotivation also positively predicted academic procrastination (β = 0.26, p < .05). As hypothesized, a partial mediation of academic amotivation was observed as the regression weights for the impact of smartphone addiction on academic procrastination were reduced in model 2 (β = .48) comparing to model 1 (β = .57). Significant gender differences were also observed in the study with male students getting comparatively higher scores on all three variables than female students. Conclusion: The study concluded that smartphone addiction significantly affects academic performance of the students.

Abstract:
The study aims to determine the role of the US media as a destabilizing factor in the contemporary domestic politics of Venezuela, especially in the context of the power crisis of 2013–2019. The study used the methods of data analysis obtained through interviews, discourse analysis, the method of grounded theory, content analysis of selected sources (CNN, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Bloomberg) and event analysis, which made it possible to analyze the most frequently mentioned in the American media developments in the domestic politics of Venezuela for the period 2013–2019. The results of the study reveal the bias of the American media and their dependence on the main US political course towards Venezuela, demonstrate the systematic creation of a negative image of Venezuela in the American media with a focus on the economic crisis and low living standards in the country, and attempts to influence US and international public opinion on the issue of recognizing the illegitimate parallel government of self-proclaimed President Juan Guaidó. The practical significance of the work’s findings is the that they can be used in developing a strategy for information interaction between Venezuela and the United States, creating an information security system that accounts for the identified threats and strengthening the regional media of Venezuela.

Abstract:
Purpose Nowadays, the event detection is so important in gathering news from social media. Indeed, it is widely employed by journalists to generate early alerts of reported stories. In order to incorporate available data on social media into a news story, journalists must manually process, compile and verify the news content within a very short time span. Despite its utility and importance, this process is time-consuming and labor-intensive for media organizations. Because of the afore-mentioned reason and as social media provides an essential source of data used as a support for professional journalists, the purpose of this paper is to propose the citizen clustering technique which allows the community of journalists and media professionals to document news during crises. Design/methodology/approach The authors develop, in this study, an approach for natural hazard events news detection and danger citizen’ groups clustering based on three major steps. In the first stage, the authors present a pipeline of several natural language processing tasks: event trigger detection, applied to recuperate potential event triggers; named entity recognition, used for the detection and recognition of event participants related to the extracted event triggers; and, ultimately, a dependency analysis between all the extracted data. Analyzing the ambiguity and the vagueness of similarity of news plays a key role in event detection. This issue was ignored in traditional event detection techniques. To this end, in the second step of our approach, the authors apply fuzzy sets techniques on these extracted events to enhance the clustering quality and remove the vagueness of the extracted information. Then, the defined degree of citizens’ danger is injected as input to the introduced citizens clustering method in order to detect citizens’ communities with close disaster degrees. Findings Empirical results indicate that homogeneous and compact citizen’ clusters can be detected using the suggested event detection method. It can also be observed that event news can be analyzed efficiently using the fuzzy theory. In addition, the proposed visualization process plays a crucial role in data journalism, as it is used to analyze event news, as well as in the final presentation of detected danger citizens’ clusters. Originality/value The introduced citizens clustering method is profitable for journalists and editors to better judge the veracity of social media content, navigate the overwhelming, identify eyewitnesses and contextualize the event. The empirical analysis results illustrate the efficiency of the developed method for both real and artificial networks.

Abstract:
This work discusses the soliton solutions for the fractional complex Ginzburg–Landau equation in Kerr law media. It is a particularly fascinating model in this context as it is a dissipative variant of the Hamiltonian nonlinear Schrödinger equation with solutions that create localized singularities in finite time. The ϕ6-model technique is one of the generalized methodologies exerted on the fractional complex Ginzburg–Landau equation to find the new solitary wave profiles. As a result, solitonic wave patterns develop, including Jacobi elliptic function, periodic, dark, bright, single, dark-bright, exponential, trigonometric, and rational solitonic structures, among others. The assurance of the practicality of the solitary wave results is provided by the constraint condition corresponding to each achieved solution. The graphical 3D and contour depiction of the attained outcomes is shown to define the pulse propagation behaviors while imagining the pertinent data for the involved parameters. The sensitive analysis predicts the dependence of the considered model on initial conditions. It is a reliable and efficient technique used to generate generalized solitonic wave profiles with diverse soliton families. Furthermore, we ensure that all results are innovative and mark remarkable impacts on the prevailing solitary wave theory literature.

Abstract:
As an important form to relieve the pressure of the present pension, the development of mutual support for the aged shows a trend of organization. Based on the theory of social exchange and the perspective of economics, mutual pension organizations are divided into four modes according to the media between participants' service payment and service acquisition in the organizational process, as well as the way of obtaining pension services. Through the horizontal comparison of the four mutual endowment organization modes, we find that the modern mutual endowment mode is not completely created out of nothing, but embedded in the original social system. The sustainable operation of the mutual support pension model requires not only the system design that converges the gap between participant's pay and reward, but also similar behavioral habitus, and the greater the gap between pay and reward, the higher the dependence on behavioral habitus.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the analysis of metaphorical representations of the coronavirus pandemic in texts selected by continuous sampling from German-language media. The methodological basis of the research is the theory of conceptual metaphor, as well as the Russian theory of metaphorical modeling, which allow us to single out universal metaphorical models that are in line with the Zeitgeist and are part of the national picture of the world. Pandemic discourse was selected as the research space. It is understood as a media supertext or as a collection of media texts united by one topic and aimed at reflecting events associated with the pandemic. Further, the article examines predictable metaphorical models – the military model with an extensive system of slots representing most of the elements of “military” actions aimed at combating the virus; the disaster model (tsunami, storm, fire) showing the attitude to the virus as to a dangerous and uncontrollable phenomenon; the ambivalent road model (the road from the pandemic, on the one hand, and the road along which the virus is walking around the world, on the other); the legal model focusing attention on the protest part of the discourse; the zoomorphic model; the theatrical-game model. The author shows an example of the interaction of units of different metaphorical models for the implication of certain nuances of meaning. The conceptual metaphors that fill the slots of these models show the complex moral and psychological state of society and an ambiguous social attitude towards the pandemic reality. The final part of the article describes living metaphors, born as a response to the anxiety of the situation and fear, realizing unconventional meanings, to some extent a carnival attitude to what is happening, speaking ironically and/or describing everything in a plain, upfront way. A striking linguistic fact in this category of metaphors is serial metaphors, which form large word families and, by one feature, characterize a number of objects or phenomena of the new reality. Attention is drawn to complex metaphors, the semantics of which is made up of a pun on the direct meanings of the components. The conclusion states the high degree of emotional impact of metaphors, the dynamism of the metaphorical picture of the pandemic reality, its dependence on many objective and individual factors, as well as on ideological reasons. The prospect of the research is seen in the description of anthropomorphic metaphorical images of pandemic discourse of the corona-humoristic texts.
