Abstract:
PurposeWith the initial focus on the extreme end of the work conditions continuum where, in the last decade, legislation has been introduced to combat illegal and illegitimate practices, this issue's lead paper provides an overview on key topics of extreme work conditions of modern slavery and accounting. The paper introduces the Special Issue on “Accounting for modern slavery, employees and work conditions in business” and its selected papers.Design/methodology/approachThe method adopted is a wide-ranging literature review exploring the continuum of work conditions and their relationship to accounting, especially extreme exploitation of workers through modern slavery.FindingsEmployment and workplace conditions and practices in business can be viewed as a continuum ranging from the illegal and illegitimate practices of modern slavery, through unethical and often illegal practices such as wages theft, to decent work. Given this continuum, in this Special Issue avenues are identified for accounting research to provide an account of the effectiveness of actions taken to eliminate modern slavery and overcome grey areas of work conditions.Practical implicationsThe paper helps to create an improved understanding of different types of exploitation in work conditions in different industries and the role accounting might play in research and practice.Social implicationsSlavery did not end with abolition in the 19th century. Instead, it changed its forms and continues to harm people in every country in the world especially in certain industries, of which several are discussed and accounting advice proffered. Likewise, as reflected in Special Issue papers, the role of accounting in reducing less extreme forms of poor work conditions is also considered.Originality/valueThe paper provides an overview of different forms and degrees of exploitation in work conditions and identifies the need for and areas of accounting research in this emerging area.

Information literacy as a set of techniques and methods to work with diverse types of information is a necessary condition for s person to exist in the modern world, because it helps to develop personal, professional and educational skills. The concept of information literacy firstly appeared in the United States in the 1970th. It was a response to the development of information society. Up to now the idea has not lost its relevance, due to the intensive growth of information technologies, an increase in information volumes and the emergence of new educational paradigms. Since the 1990th libraries began to actively develop programs and implement methods of increasing information literacy, systematically train users in rational methods of search, analytical and synthetic information processing, extraction, evaluation and transformation, as well as in the grounds of information security. The purpose of this article is to identify current advanced practices of libraries on various training forms to develop users’ information literacy, taking into account the increase in information flows and the emergence of large amounts of misinformation, the expansion of information types, the capabilities of education technologies, including online, library directions of work activities. To get information use was made of the Scopus database (the selection criterion: journal publications from 2015 to 2019 on the topic “information literacy”). The publication analysis has shown that libraries choose various ways and methods to teach information literacy their users: embedding programs in the educational process (academic libraries); through game, interactive forms (public libraries), individual methods of work of subject librarians with readers, as well as online instructions that allow formation of skills for effective search and information processing in any format.

Implication to Theory, Practice and Policy: Nevertheless, the paper does not argue against pay as a whole, but emphasizes that meaningfulness in nonpaid work is often undermined in economic-oriented discourses, theories and practices. While the present analysis recognizes the criticality of imported models in people management at work, it reiterates that work in pre-colonial Africa was life, and life was work and did not exclude management practices. While recognizing the perception of work as modern and economic driven, the paper advocates the intrinsic benefits of work in traditional occupations that are synonymous to lifestyle and their integration into mainstream people management practices. Critical lessons are drawn with implications to human resources policy, theory building with indigenous inputs and contingent practices in both modern and traditional sectors.

AbstractThis essay follows recent work in environmental history to explore the history of recycling in physical sciences in Britain and North America since the seventeenth century. The term ‘recycling’ is here used broadly to refer to a variety of practices that extended the life of material resources for doing science in the early modern period. These included practices associated with maintenance, repair, exchange and the adaptation or reuse of material culture. The essay argues that such practices were common in early modern science, and informed experimental spaces and techniques and the ideas that they generated. The essay considers some of the varied motivations that led to such practices, and concludes by examining the endurance of recycling in science since the end of the eighteenth century, particularly in recent efforts to create sustainable scientific research practices.

Abstract:
Background: Nearly 750,000 adolescents and emerging adults with special health care needs (AEA-SHCN) enter into adulthood annually. The linkages to ensure the seamless transfer of care from pediatric to adult care and transition to adulthood for AEA-SHCN have yet to be realized. Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate the state of the science of health care transition (HCT) service models as described in quantitative investigations. Methods: A four-tier screening approach was used to obtain reviewed articles published from 2004 to 2013. A total of 17 articles were included in this review. Discussion: Transfer of care was the most prominent intervention feature. Overall, using the Effective Public Health Practice Project criteria, the studies were rated as weak. Limitations included lack of control groups, rigorous designs and methodology, and incomplete intervention descriptions. Conclusion: As the findings indicate, HCT is an emerging field of practice that is largely in the exploratory stage of model development.

Abstract:
Case management by professional nurses is a rapidly expanding function within managed care systems. The purposes of this study were to describe the extent of perceived control over nursing practice, job stress, and work satisfaction among 30 Nurse Case Managers (n = 30) practicing in two different models of nursing case management and to describe the impact of control over nursing and job stress on work satisfaction. Three instruments were used: Control Over Nursing Practice Scale, Nurse Case Manager Job Stress Index, and Index of Work Satisfaction for Nurse Case Managers. Work satisfaction was positively correlated with control over nursing practice (r =.65, p =.01) and a negatively correlated with job stress (r = -.43, p =.01). Demographic characteristics were not correlated with the variables under study. Control over nursing practice had a stronger impact (B =.59) on work satisfaction than did job stress (B = -.33); together they explained 53 percent of the variance in work satisfaction.

Abstract:
Emerging research has shown that there are sustainable models for collaborative practice in primary care (Corso, Hunter, Dahl, Kallenberg, & Manson, 2016; Robinson & Reiter, 2014). The adaptation of these innovative practice models into currently functioning primary care p practices requires health care professionals to be flexible in order to “fit” interventions into a service delivery model that is oriented to population health. A significant driver of interprofessional practice implementation will be the dissemination of: 1) these models across the spectrum of health care providers and 2) solid business plans demonstrating sustainability. The uptake of long-standing, non-student based collaborative practice models in primary care is essential for the future of interprofessional education (IPE; Earnest & Brandt, 2014). First, the establishment of strong team-based primary care practices provides true and practical application of classroom concepts learned during foundational IPE training. Second, a critical extension of IPE in health care professions training programs is seeding local practices with newly minted providers who are prepared to develop these sustainable models. These providers are situated to: 1) demonstrate the value of IPE in the real world, 2) provide high fidelity training sites for future IPE students, and 3) lead the field of interprofessional practice and innovation. At East Tennessee State University, we have assisted several IPE post-doctoral trainees in developing positions in collaborative primary care around our region. Today, several psychology and pharmacy graduates are working in primary care clinics based in urban and rural areas, academic health center and private-sector health care settings, and within for-profit and federally-qualified health care. These new professionals have increased the demand for interprofessionally trained providers, prepared for an adaptation to primary care. They have initiated training programs and serve as a model for our current IPE students. In this interactive workshop, we will provide attendees with information on best-practice collaborative models for primary care practice as well as an overview of our business strategy for growing sustainable permanent positions for our graduates with discussion about how to generalize these to new professsions. The session will be structured around two "theory bursts”: one which elaborates integrated practice models and one which describes business models and how to “sell” interprofessional practice. The dissemination of this information will occur in the context of participant engagement. Specifically, we will use small group discussion exercises to facilitate adapting specialty/siloed care to the primary care environment and applying models & plans to participants’ specific situations.

This book offers a panorama of movement, mobility, and exchange in the early modern world. While the pre-modern centuries have long been portrayed as static and self-contained, it is now acknowledged that Europe from the Middle Ages onwards saw increasing flows of people and goods. Movement also connected the continent more closely to other parts of the world. The present work challenges dominant notions of the ‘fixed,’ immobile nature of pre-modern cultures through study of the inter-connected material, social, and cultural dimensions of mobility. AbstractIncreasingly academic air travel in recent decades is part of a larger transformation and globalisation of modern work life away from the industrial and hierarchical work towards much more flexible, networked and mobile work where air travel often is a critical component. However, the climate crisis and COVID-19 have put such work practices under pressure. Therefore, the chapter first examines the importance of aeromobilities for late modern work, which sets the context of contemporary academic work practices. Next, the chapter particularly examines academic work, where especially physical meetings and face-to-face interaction play a central role in academic work and aeromobilities. The chapter argues here for a more diverse understanding of the meaning and role of such meetings if a lower climate footprint should be achieved. Following, it present a tool that provides a better understanding of which types of meetings particularly require co-presence and face-to-face communication, and which types of meetings that just as well—or perhaps even better and more efficiently—can be carried out as virtual meetings. However, as stressed in the conclusion, such an approach seems to require a much greater focus on ‘aeromobility management’ at academic institutions in the future.

AbstractThis chapter examines whether the rehabilitative remit of patient workhad decreased in importance during the interwar years compared to during the nineteenth century. Despite the need to rebuild their respective economies after World War I, and the high unemployment of the Great Depression, patient occupation in French and English asylums did not appear to prepare patients for the modern workplace, as Freebody’s comparison of the work available locally to the work provided in linstitutions demonstrates. The work around the hospital tended to be based on outmoded artisanal techniques in France, while in England, occupational therapy, in the form of arts and crafts, was the antithesis of modern working practices, such as those associated with “scientific labour management”. Freebody attempts to explain this anomaly in terms of a focus on the "active treatment" of patients, rather than vocational rehabilitation, and increased levels of support for patients post-discharge in England, and to the emphasis on the financial contribution made by patient labour to asylum budgets in France.

AbstractThis article analyzes the ways in which ‘Alī al-Sharafī of Sfax, an atlas author of the sixteenth century, adapted excerpts from the work of the twelfth-century geographer Muḥammad al-Idrīsī as well as features of medieval European portolan charts. The article pursues a translation studies approach. It argues that, through the adaptation of both textual and graphic elements from Idrīsī’s work and the incorporation of other graphic and cartographic elements, al-Sharafī was in fact engaging in a practice of cultural translation which resulted in a unique and innovative textual and cartographic oeuvre. As such, al-Sharafī should be regarded not simply as a passive copyist of textual and cartographic elements, but indeed as an author who engaged in the creative re-signification of the traditions and practices that informed his work.

This chapter introduces the topic of improvisation in early modern England, starting with an etymological survey of contemporaneous language used and locating the ‘extemporary’ as a historical term that encompassed a wide variety of improvised practice. Starting with the English musician Christopher Simpson’s work The Division Viol (1659), the chapter explores the musical practice of making ‘divisions on a ground’ and contextualises this practice within memory practices and beliefs about imagination and embodiment in early modern England, as well as within histories of print culture and (un)written legal structures. The chapter also explores extemporary prayer, contextualising writers who argued for and against this practice within contemporary theories around improvisation and the body, and within discourses of coloniality and ‘otherness’. The chapter concludes by bringing the non-musical explorations of improvisation to bear on the practice of making divisions on a ground.

The production of copper in prehistory was a complex undertaking, involving a sequence of inter-related activities that required specialist knowledge and informed organization. The operation of early copper mines demanded a long-term commitment that had important implications for the societies in question. There are obvious parallels with modern mining in terms of the multi-stage nature of the process, from the initial search for copper ores to their extraction, treatment, and eventual conversion to metal. This explains why early mining is often characterized as an ‘industry’, with its own specialists and techniques. Given their professional background, it is not surprising that the earliest researchers in this field focused on the geological setting, technology, and engineering aspects of prehistoric copper mines. Modern research also deals with these aspects, but is more concerned with understanding the wider societal context of this activity. It is now recognized that any reconstruction of the chaîne opératoire of early copper mining cannot be based solely on technique and process, but needs to incorporate the dynamic social context of this activity. It also needs to recognize that human choice played a significant role in determining the process of mining. While some areas are not amenable to archaeological enquiry, a reconstruction of task structure and work routines should capture many aspects of decision making in these mines. This will be revisited in the next chapter to explore the distinctive nature of prehistoric mining communities and how they interacted with the external world. Before doing so, it is necessary to examine the process of mining in terms of the techniques employed and the work environment of these miners. The opening chapter of this book considered the concept of ore, as it would have applied in prehistory. The modern definition is essentially an economic one that relates the cost of mining a mineral deposit to perceived financial returns or strategic interests. The effort of extraction must be set against the concentration or ‘grade’ of metal present in the rock, which will determine whether it can be profitably extracted.

Given the problematic and limited environment of healthcare organizations, high-performance work practices are purported to be an effective “medicine” for organizational functioning. Thus, the purpose of this chapter is to delineate human resource management policies and their core high-performance work practices and also highlight their key role in ameliorating healthcare organizations' performance. By doing so, we provide some useful insights from healthcare literature in relation to the underlying mechanisms that account for this relationship.

Abstract This paper compares modern interference testing methods and the usually friendly interference testing sessions with the somewhat hostile experiences of the author’s early years of practice which began in 1952. The most significant improvements in interference testing have been the general acceptance of the natural-potential criterion that is used to adjust interference bonds, the modern electronic field voltmeters with their very high resistance inputs, and the computerized processing of field gathered data. Interference testing sessions of early years often involved hostile technical disagreements that involved ill-based demands of participants. The profusion of present day impressed current cathodic protection has altered interference practice considerably. It was a difficult and "rocky road" that brought about present day general acceptance of correct interference technology from the confusion of interference practice which existed in the 1950’s and 1960’s. This paper also compares the pre-computer era and primitive instrumentation with modern instrumentation and computerized advantages in collecting and analyzing interference data. Pearson’s network equations and derivations from them are quite comprehensively described here along with explanation of the advantage of their use in interference mitigation over the simple "cut &amp; try or slide nichrome" method of setting interference mitigation bonds. The writer is a computer "nut", but feels that "by-the-numbers" handbook-guided or computer-aided practices without proper background knowledge, contribute to the erosion and eventual disappearance of the knowledge and appreciation of the theory behind much of corrosion control practice, particularly interference mitigation. Thus, he strongly advocates that a corrosion practitioner should strive to understand the theory behind the practice as one uses these modern devices in one’s work.

This study analyzes the impact of virtual collaboration tools on knowledge sharing in distributed and virtual teams, operating at the intersection of technology, human behavior, and organizational processes. It aims to unravel the complexities of knowledge sharing in modern workplaces by examining the role of these tools in facilitating knowledge exchange, identifying factors for effective practices, and exploring the impact of organizational culture and industry dynamics. Through empirical research, including a self-completed online questionnaire and secondary data sources, the study addresses key research objectives and hypotheses, seeking to maintain elevated levels of knowledge sharing with increasing virtual collaboration. Building on previous research on IT management models and knowledge exchange, the study finds that virtual collaboration tools positively influence knowledge sharing, with specific tools and functions such as speed of access and file storage contributing significantly. However, challenges remain in transparency of information structure and integration with organizational tools. Despite limitations in sample size, the research offers valuable insights and practical strategies for organizations navigating today's dynamic work landscape, supporting best practices in environments user planning and IT tool design, and deepening the understanding of knowledge sharing in virtual.

Abstract Maintaining aged infrastructure can be challenging, especially when structures were designed with difficult-to-coat features, such as riveted construction, back-to-back plates, or skip welds. According to NACE SP0178 - Design, Fabrication, and Surface Finish Practices for Tanks and Vessels to be Lined for Immersion Service, these construction methods are not recommended for immersion service (1). However, existing structures must be periodically recoated. This begs the question; what are the proper procedures for a successful recoat of these structures? The difficult-to-coat features were once protected using lead-based paints, solution vinyl resins, and coal tar enamel coating systems. Sometimes special mastic materials were used that contained asbestos and other reinforcing ingredients. Today’s coating systems are typically highly crosslinked polymers such as epoxies and polyurethanes. The standard practice within SSPC PA Guide 11 is to brush apply stripe coats to work the coating into crevices prior to spray application (2). In the case where the gap is too large for a coating to bridge, 100% solids epoxy mastic fillers are used to fill the void. All rivets and overlapping plates have crevices, which when coated can eventually result in cracks in the coating eventual corrosion. Potential causes of this damage are coating shrinkage stress and joint movement. The older coating systems protected these areas for 40-50 years before cracking. In contrast several of Reclamation’s recent recoating jobs experienced failures of these features within months, despite following application procedures. This paper reviews common practices for coating the infrastructure features described above, case history using modern coatings, specification language, and workmanship of contractors.

Abstract We report results of one-year field experience in monitoring atmospheric corrosion and developing field work of corrosion damages to assess the performance of the coatings that are currently used for the protection of tanks and structures in an industrial facility and four jet fuel storage stations. For this work, we selected sites located at representative climatic conditions of the Mexican territory. The sites included the industrial port of Altamira and the City of Villahermosa, near the coast of the north and southeast Gulf of Mexico, respectively; the city of Tapachula at the coast of the Pacific Ocean; and the inland cities of Mexicali, an extreme hot, dry and sunny location, and Guadalajara, a humid tempered city. Atmospheric conditions at the Gulf of Mexico were found to be very corrosive due to humidity, salinity and chemicals from industrial activity. An analysis of the coating systems and surface preparation that are currently used, as well as of historic records of the plant equipments revealed opportunities to improve the coating systems performance in the future. Modern coating systems and practices were discussed, benchmarked and a final selection was recommended, according to the atmospheric environments in the regions.

The crystallographies of the metal surface and the corresponding structure of the magnetite film must also be discussed for optimum magnetite film formation. It was also reported that there was a need to review the current recommendations relating to alkalinity limits in industrial boilers before initiating a project to develop An Alkalinity Supplement/Addendum to the Consensus on Operating Practices for the Control of Feedwater and Boiler Water Chemistry in Modern Industrial Boilers.1,2 This work is currently in progress. The Schikorr reaction and oxidation vs. reduction chemistry will also be discussed as they relate to industrial boiler systems and the use of reducing agents. It will also be discussed how the coordinated phosphate program coupled with reducing agents provide the best conditions for passive film growth. It should be noted that the AVT (All Volatile Treatment) and OT (Oxygen Treatment) programs are not suited for high pressure industrial boiler applications.

The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings:  HUMANITY The Panel recommends recognition that research in this field should be geared towards the development of critical understandings of self and society in the modern world. Archaeological research into the modern past should be ambitious in seeking to contribute to understanding of the major social, economic and environmental developments through which the modern world came into being. Modern-world archaeology can add significantly to knowledge of Scotland’s historical relationships with the rest of the British Isles, Europe and the wider world. Archaeology offers a new perspective on what it has meant to be a modern person and a member of modern society, inhabiting a modern world.  MATERIALITY The Panel recommends approaches to research which focus on the materiality of the recent past (i.e. the character of relationships between people and their material world). Archaeology’s contribution to understandings of the modern world lies in its ability to situate, humanise and contextualise broader historical developments. Archaeological research can provide new insights into the modern past by investigating historical trends not as abstract phenomena but as changes to real lives, affecting different localities in different ways. Archaeology can take a long-term perspective on major modern developments, researching their ‘prehistory’ (which often extends back into the Middle Ages) and their material legacy in the present. Archaeology can humanise and contextualise long-term processes and global connections by working outwards from individual life stories, developing biographies of individual artefacts and buildings and evidencing the reciprocity of people, things, places and landscapes. The modern person and modern social relationships were formed in and through material environments and, to understand modern humanity, it is crucial that we understand humanity’s material relationships in the modern world.  PERSPECTIVE The Panel recommends the development, realisation and promotion of work which takes a critical perspective on the present from a deeper understanding of the recent past. Research into the modern past provides a critical perspective on the present, uncovering the origins of our current ways of life and of relating to each other and to the world around us. It is important that this relevance is acknowledged, understood, developed and mobilised to connect past, present and future. The material approach of archaeology can enhance understanding, challenge assumptions and develop new and alternative histories. Modern Scotland: Archaeology, the Modern past and the Modern present vi Archaeology can evidence varied experience of social, environmental and economic change in the past. It can consider questions of local distinctiveness and global homogeneity in complex and nuanced ways. It can reveal the hidden histories of those whose ways of life diverged from the historical mainstream. Archaeology can challenge simplistic, essentialist understandings of the recent Scottish past, providing insights into the historical character and interaction of Scottish, British and other identities and ideologies.  COLLABORATION The Panel recommends the development of integrated and collaborative research practices. Perhaps above all other periods of the past, the modern past is a field of enquiry where there is great potential benefit in collaboration between different specialist sectors within archaeology, between different disciplines, between Scottish-based researchers and researchers elsewhere in the world and between professionals and the public. The Panel advocates the development of new ways of working involving integrated and collaborative investigation of the modern past. Extending beyond previous modes of inter-disciplinary practice, these new approaches should involve active engagement between different interests developing collaborative responses to common questions and problems.  REFLECTION The Panel recommends that a reflexive approach is taken to the archaeology of the modern past, requiring research into the nature of academic, professional and public engagements with the modern past and the development of new reflexive modes of practice. Archaeology investigates the past but it does so from its position in the present. Research should develop a greater understanding of modern-period archaeology as a scholarly pursuit and social practice in the present. Research should provide insights into the ways in which the modern past is presented and represented in particular contexts. Work is required to better evidence popular understandings of and engagements with the modern past and to understand the politics of the recent past, particularly its material aspect. Research should seek to advance knowledge and understanding of the moral and ethical viewpoints held by professionals and members of the public in relation to the archaeology of the recent past. There is a need to critically review public engagement practices in modern-world archaeology and develop new modes of public-professional collaboration and to generate practices through which archaeology can make positive interventions in the world. And there is a need to embed processes of ethical reflection and beneficial action into archaeological practice relating to the modern past.

First and foremost, the existing digitalization strategies for society already approved in the world and in Ukraine, including the implementation of STEM education and the Digital Agenda, are considered. On the other hand, attention is paid to the inconsistency of the level of ownership and frequency of use of digital technologies with the requirements of these initiatives. The concept of informational and digital competence is analyzed in detail. Existing publications identify key components, skills and competencies required to achieve this competence. A survey is conducted to better understand the current situation. One of the tasks is to determine the level of use of digital information in the classroom by teachers and in students’ preparation at home. The second task was to show how developing students’ informational and digital competence can be done by active introduction of existing software and hardware in the educational process in physics, in particular, a laboratory workshop. The example of laboratory work carried out in educational institutions shows how modern software can be used to analyze the movement of bodies and determine the physical characteristics of this movement. The concrete ways of performing laboratory work, analyzing its results and drawing conclusions are given. It is in the combination of existing teaching practices with modern gadgets, specialized and general programs that the basic way of forming informational and digital competence is seen. Further ways of modernization and improvement of described methods for increasing the level of information and digital competence are proposed.

In India, the construction industry is the second-largest employer, with 51 million workers currently employed. Contracting and subcontracting has contributed to the rise of intermediary labor contractors, who provide migrants with information about labor markets and bring them to construction sites for work. Engagement in physically demanding low-skill jobs, low wages, harsh working conditions, and often deplorable living arrangements characterize the lives of many migrant construction workers. The Population Council, in partnership with the Global Fund to End Modern Slavery and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, undertook a qualitative study to explore the nature of the labor supply chain in the construction industry and the relationship between workers, micro-contractors, other contractors, and construction firms/companies. The study also explored vulnerabilities faced by migrant construction workers, perceptions of workers and micro-contractors about ethical recruitment and employment practices, and challenges faced by micro-contractors in following these ethical recruitment and employment practices. Twenty-five micro-contractors and 236 workers were interviewed from June to August 2022 in construction sites in Bengaluru and Delhi in India.

The article deals with the peculiarities of creation and practical application of augmented reality (AR) technologies for the organization of students-philologists’ individual and group work in studying the discipline “Methodic of teaching literature”. The relevance of the introduction of AR technologies for the future teachers-philologists’ readiness formation to the professional activity is substantiated. Analysis of the scientific sources suggested that the professional training process requires the modernization of teaching methods, and the usage of information and communication technologies (ICT) in education, in particular AR technologies, allows to make the learning process interesting and exciting. The domestic and foreign experience of AR technologies application into current educational practices is generalized. A step-by-step algorithm for creating the AR in the mobile application Unite and its subsequent content filling for professional training of future teachers of Ukrainian language and literature is described. The visualization of the educational content of the lepbook “Incredible Lesya Ukrainka”, made by students- philologists at the Mykhailo Stelmakh Faculty of Philology and Journalism of Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi State Pedagogical University during the studying the discipline “Methodic of teaching literature”, is detailed. It is specified that the educational process is based on the creation AR with the visualization of interactive learning materials with animation, instructions, links, video content, illustrations etc. according to the rubrics of the lepbook. It is emphasized that the implementation of AR technologies provides the increasing of motivation for systematic mastering of practical skills, enhances students’ concentration and attention, increases their cognitive experience, promotes the development of their creative abilities, produces the opportunities of using the visualized content for students’ research work, stimulates them to self-expression, motivates them to self-development, trains them to the skillful use of the Internet, modern gadgets and mobile applications, etc. Prospects for studying the possibilities of using AR technologies in lessons of Ukrainian literature at secondary school are determined.

In Semester 2 (July–November) 2022, Dr Irene Ayallo collaborated with the students in the Research Methods course in Unitec’s Bachelor of Social Practice to investigate the link between learning delivery modes and students’ ability to demonstrate the Aotearoa New Zealand Social Workers Registration Board (SWRB) core competencies (see Appendix 1). The aim of the project was to teach research skills and, simultaneously, critically analyse whether the shift in learning delivery due to the Covid-19 pandemic could impact the students’ future competencies as social workers in the Aotearoa New Zealand context. The report describes the research design process and presents a literature review, findings from data, and a discussion of the findings. Findings from this research show that the learning environment within which social work education is delivered has changed significantly, provoked by the events during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. Rethinking social work education delivery models is inevitable and required in this new environment. Carefully designed flexible delivery models, such as a mix of in-person and online (blended), would be most effective in safeguarding against and minimising learning disruptions without compromising quality. The most impactful delivery model for social work students is characterised by engaging and interactive content, practical activities and group work, increasing and checking retention, clear structure and guidelines, consistency, flexibility, and capability building for staff and students. The extent to which these can be achieved depends on addressing individual student and staff factors, and broader institutional resources, guidelines and policies.

In modern public management the use of statistics for decision making is essential. Evidence-based policy, as well as results-based public management, cannot operate effectively without reliable and timely data. Likewise, without more specialized, quality statistics, the achievement of development objectives cannot be appropriately monitored, or the effectiveness of development plans evaluated. In the specific context of Belize, the importance of a well-functioning statistical system is essential to the process of economic and social development of the country. Yet, according to the evidence collected, the country is characterized by the absence of a statistical system; as such, the agencies that produce data based on administrative registries and surveys usually do their work independently; there is no regulation that governs statistical production in any institution outside the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB); and there is no common set of classifiers, norms, and definitions based on good practices that meet international standards. Since the SIB does not audit and regulate the production of data in the country, statistical production is disintegrated and there is room for improvement in timeliness and quality. Moreover, Belize's National Statistical System (NSS) does not have any effective mechanism to reach users. To improve this situation, this technical note recommends strengthening the SIB's capacity to produce basic statistics and increasing the country's use of statistics through the implementation of a national statistics strategy in Belize with the SIB in the role as the coordinating agency. This will help to strengthen the entire statistical system.

During recent pipeline construction seasons, there have been reported difficulties in cold field bending different joints of line pipe produced by the same manufacturer during a particular production run. These difficulties were typically manifested as an inability to achieve bends of one to one-and-a-half degrees per diameter in the pipe without forming ripples. Some of these problems could be traced to poor bending practices, i.e., inappropriate bending machine set-up and operator inexperience. However, it was observed that even with proper machine set-up and experienced operators, some "bad pipe" exists that could not be bent as far as desired without introducing ripples. The objective of this program was to develop an acceptance criterion for an allowable ripple in a gas-transmission pipeline as a result of a cold field bend. Previous acceptance or rejection criteria for ripples in cold field bent pipe were quite subjective. The purpose of this study was to define quantitative limits for acceptable ripple heights that will not compromise the integrity of the pipe during its expected life. In a program discussed at the 9th PRCI/EPRG meeting, the work performed during a joint Australian Pipeline Industry Association/Line Pipe Research Supervisory Committee effort on the mechanics of cold field bending was presented. Based on theoretical and experimental studies, it was found that modern, high-strength, high D/t pipe forms ripples at very low bend angles during cold field bending. Although there was some circumstantial evidence that some amount of rippling can be tolerated in a pipe, there had been no systematic effort to quantify the influence that the ripples have on the long-term integrity of pipe.

This research studies the issues of intergenerational transfers in general and farm succession in particular in two different institutional environments. One is the relatively unregulated farm sector in the United States, and the other is the heavily regulated family farms in Israeli moshavim. Most of the analysis is based on modern economic theory dealing with inheritance and other intergenerational issues. However, we start with two background studies. One is a review of the legal system affecting farm succession in the moshav, which, as we claim throughout the report, is of major importance to the question in hand. The second is an ethnographical study aimed at documenting various inheritance and succession practices in different moshavim. These two studies provide insight for most of the economic studies included here. The theoretical studies mostly deal with various aspects of two major decisions faced by farmers: who will succeed them on the farm, and when will succession take place. The first decision clearly depends on the institutional structure: for instance, Israeli farmers are limited to one successor while American farmers are not. The second decision can be taken in three stages: sharing farm work with the successor, sharing farm management, and eventually transferring the ownership. The occurrence and length of each stage depend on the first decision as well as on the institutional structure directly. The empirical studies are aimed at analyzing the practices and considerations of Israeli and American farmers regarding various intergenerational transfers-related issues. We found that American farmers' decisions are mainly driven by the desire to let the farm prosper in future generations and by a preference for equal treatment of heirs, and not at all by old-age support considerations. In contrast, we demonstrate the significant effect of old-age support on the value of the transferred farm in a sample of Israeli farms. Using Israeli census data, we find that the time of farm ownership transfer responds to economic incentives. A smaller Israeli panel data set shows that controlling for the occurrence of succession, farm size rises with operator's age and eventually falls, while intensity of production seems to decline steadily. This explains another finding, that farm transfer contributed significantly to farm growth when farming was attractive to successors. This finding supports our main conclusion, that the succession decisions are of major importance to the viability and profitability of family farms over the long run.
