Abstract:

Abstract:
Nous concluons avec une discussion portant sur les limitations de notre approche, ainsi que sur les verrous restant à lever afin de dériver une représentation multiéchelle de la matière encore plus générale.<br>Photorealistic rendering involves the numeric resolution of physically accurate light/matter interactions which, despite the tremendous and continuously increasing computational power that we now have at our disposal, is nowhere from becoming a quick and simple task for our computers. This is mainly due to the way that we represent objects: in order to reproduce the subtle interactions that create detail, tremendous amounts of geometry need to be queried. Hence, at render time, this complexity leads to heavy input/output operations which, combined with numerically complex filtering operators, require unreasonable amounts of computation times to guarantee artifact-free images. In order to alleviate such issues with today's constraints, a multiscale representation for matter must be derived. In this thesis, we derive such a representation for matter whose interface can be modelled as a displaced surface, a configuration that is typically simulated with displacement texture mapping in computer graphics. Our representation is derived within the realm of microfacet theory (a framework originally designed to model reflection of rough surfaces), which we review and augment in two respects. First, we render the theory applicable across multiple scales by extending it to support noncentral microfacet statistics. Second, we derive an inversion procedure that retrieves microfacet statistics from backscattering reflection evaluations. We show how this augmented framework may be applied to derive a general and efficient (although approximate) down-sampling operator for displacement texture maps that (a) preserves the anisotropy exhibited by light transport for any resolution, (b) can be applied prior to rendering and stored into MIP texture maps to drastically reduce the number of input/output operations, and (c) considerably simplifies per-pixel filtering operations, resulting overall in shorter rendering times. In order to validate and demonstrate the effectiveness of our operator, we render antialiased photorealistic images against ground truth. In addition, we provide C++ implementations all along the dissertation to facilitate the reproduction of the presented results. We conclude with a discussion on limitations of our approach, and avenues for a more general multiscale representation for matter.

Abstract:
Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis (EAE) is an animal model of multiple sclerosis (MS), causing a demyelinating central nervous system (CNS) inflammation which resembles the main pathological features of MS. Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), which are key components in the molecular response leading to MS/EAE pathogenesis, are regulated by MAPK phosphatases (MKPs), enzymes which dephosphorylate phosphotyrosine and phosphothreonine residues. It has previously been shown that MKP-2 modulates the inflammatory response during both acute lung injury and sepsis. Therefore in the present study we investigated the role of MKP-2 in the development of the neurological autoimmune disease, MS, using a murine EAE model. We first observed significantly increased expression of MKP-2 mRNA in the spinal cord of EAE mice compared with PBS controls. Subsequently, to understand the function of MKP-2 in vivo, we utilised MKP-2 deficient mice, inducing EAE in MKP-2 KO and WT littermates. Our data show that MKP-2 KO mice displayed significantly reduced EAE susceptibility, associated with diminished CNS inflammation and cellular infiltration, decreased expression of key cytokines and chemokines (IL-17, IFNγ, IL-6, IL-2 and CCL2), reduced frequency of CD4⁺ T cells, CD8⁺ T cells and B cells in spleen and dLN tissue as well as downregulated nitric oxide (NO) production in MKP-2 KO EAE mice. We further analysed the role of MKP-2 in two key immune cells involved in EAE pathogenesis. Upon LPS stimulation, MKP-2 deficient bone marrow-derived dendritic cells expressed less MHC-II while producing more IL-6, TNF-α and IL-10, whereas MKP-2 KO bone marrow-derived macrophages displayed a unique M1 and M2 mixed phenotype, with reduced NO production (M1) and increased CD206 expression (M2) but increased IL-6 and TNF-α, which are more associated with M1 responses. Therefore this report suggests that MKP-2 is essential to the pathogenic response of EAE, and that inhibition of MKP-2 expression or function may be a viable strategy in the treatment of autoimmune inflammatory diseases such as MS.

Full text
Abstract:
Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is a family of signaling molecules that stimulates cell growth, survival and migration. PDGF is recognized by specific transmembrane proteins, the PDGF receptors, which relay the signals to the cell activating the Mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases and other signaling pathways. Aberrant activation of these pathways is frequently detected in cancer. Hence, the study of these processes is essential for identifying potential drug targets or diagnostic markers. In paper I, we identified Receptor Subfamily 4 Group A Member 1 NR4A1 to be regulated by PDGF via MAP kinases, clarifying the role of Extracellular signal–regulated kinases (Erk) 1/2, Erk5 and Nuclear factor κ-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) in its regulation. NR4A1 was found to be important for the tumorigenic potential, measured as anchorage-independent growth, of glioblastoma cells. Since the cellular responses elicited by PDGF result from the balance between phosphorylation and dephosphorylation events, we investigated the role of the dual specificity phosphatases DUSP4/MKP-2 and DUSP6/MKP-3. In paper II, we describe the crucial role of Erk1/2 and p53 in the expression of DUSP4/MKP2. Moreover, we observed that DUSP4/MKP-2 downregulation decreases Erk5 activation and accelerates PDGFRβ internalization and downregulation resulting in a specific inhibition of Signal transducers and activators of transcription (Stat) 3, Src and protein kinase C (PKC), and partially of p38, Stat1/5 and Phoshoplipase Cγ (PLCγ). In paper III, we report that DUSP6/MKP-3 creates a negative cross-talk between Erk1/2 and Erk5 and an auto-inhibitory feedback loop on the PI3-kinase/Akt pathway. In paper IV, we identify a new regulative mechanism of the PDGF pathway. PDGF induces Erk5 expression and activation that modulates the PDGFRβ activity. After Erk5 downregulation, the receptor undergoes to a faster and stronger activation that results in a faster internalization and degradation. In conclusion, we present a mechanism through which the PDGF/MAP kinases support tumor growth, and elucidate different regulatory pathways involved in PDGF signaling.

Abstract:
This thesis is an account of research into a novel type of X-ray optic - the microchannel plate (MCP). Experiments to determine the point to point focusing properties of square pore MCPs manufactured by Galileo Electro-Optics and Philips Photonics are reported. These were performed both in a test chamber at Leicester with an electron-bombardment X-ray source and with a laser-plasma X-ray source at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. A resolution of 6 arcmin and an intensity gain of 20 were recorded using a Galileo focusing MCP. An invesigation into the focusing action of MCPs which have been curved to a spherical figure is detailed. Such curved MCPs may, in a manner reminiscent of a conventional refractive lens, be used to focus a parallel X-ray beam to a point forming the basis of an X-ray telescope, or conversely to convert the diverging beam from a point-like X-ray source to a quasi-parallel one. The curving experiments were performed by Philips Photonics on standard circular pore MCPs. Tests on these plates were performed at Leicester; the results appear favourable. The technique has been applied to MCPs of up to 4mm thickness, curving them to a radius of 1.4m (0.7m focal length). A comprehensive Monte Carlo ray-tracing model is presented. This was initially developed to facilitate an understanding of the geometry of MCP focusing and to produce idealised images corresponding to a given experimental set up. These perfect images may be compared with, or used to predict experimental results. Comparison with experimental results led to incorporation of MCP distortions into the code. These distortions have been found by a programme of metrology which is also described. The model has led to a clear insight into the causes of poor image quality and their relative importance.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2012.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 55).<br>In 1997, Jack Edmonds posed as an open problem the computational complexity of deciding whether a given m x n map-rectangular paper with horizontal and vertical creases, each marked mountain or valley-has a flat folded state. This problem has remained open since then, even for the 2 x n case. This thesis presents several theoretical contributions to this problem. Most significantly, it presents an O(n⁹ ) time algorithm for deciding the flat foldability of a 2 x n map. To achieve this result, this thesis makes a sequence of reductions which ultimately lead to a new general hidden tree problem, where the goal is to construct a "valid" tree on a given polynomial set of candidate vertices, given oracles to navigate hypothetical partially constructed trees. To complete the algorithm, it is shown that the hidden tree problem can be solved in polynomial time using dynamic programming. Additionally, several faster algorithms are given for special cases of 2 x n map folding. This thesis goes on to extend this algorithm to optimization variants of the problem. In particular, by certain metrics it finds the simplest flat folded state achievable by a given 2 x n map in polynomial time. This thesis also provides results for the general m x n map folding problem. It presents a set of nontrivial necessary conditions for an m x n map to be flat foldable, that are checkable in polynomial. Additionally, this thesis presents a fixed parameter tractable algorithm for the m x n map folding problem, where the parameter is the entropy in the partial order induced by the mountain valley pattern on the cells of the map.<br>by Thomas D. São nesses momentos de efervescências decorrentes das relações sociais, culturais, políticas e econômicas que se formam os movimentos sociais como contraponto de reivindicação e afirmação. Since the advent of Capitalism, social forces emerge in claim better conditions of living and access to their rights. It#s in these moments of agitation, consequences of social, cultural, political and economical relations, that the social movements in counterpoint to claim and affirmation. In this sense, the present paper analyzes the movement called MAP # Madre Dios (Peru), Acre (Brasil) and Pando (Bolívia), and it also aims to analyze the management over the sustainable development, in total course, in the South Occidental Amazon, the three-national-boundary region, in globalization times. Globalization, in its economical stage, promotes an asymmetrical game, in which, the neoliberal ideology is imposed upon the state-nations, as it weakens the national economies and makes these political actors being submitted to all and any kinds of investments that, in most times, don#t comply with the environmental regulations of protection. In the boundary region (MAO), an interoceanic highway has been built, and it will connect to harbors, one in Brazil and the other in Bolivia (Lima), in the Pacific, as the highway had been concepted in the Integración de la Infraestrutura of Sudamerica (IIRSA), in order to promote the South american integration, the development of the South Occidental Amazon, and yet, to integrate the countries: Brazil, Peru and Bolivia, with the market of Asia. The impact of the achievement of this work into the Amazon ecosystem has led to a social articulation called MAP initiative, based on the principles of sustainable development and on the human rights, that has moved institutions, nongovernmental organizations, Indian tribes, countrymen, for over seven years. It also has encouraged the formation of a movement of resistance to the degrading and excluding development driven by the globalization process, claiming the right to taking part on decisions over the development of the region. The MAP, in the recent stage, may be considered as a resistant emergent social movement that aims to protect the environment from the imperative way, in which, the Interoceanic highway has been built, as also a movement that promotes dialectical actions on a way of thinking and acting focused on the management of sustainable development.

This Master Thesis is engaged in designing an interactive application for online betting in the DVB-T environment. The application is determined to running at Multimedia Home Plattform MHP and it allowes digital television viewers to make a bet on a sport match broadcasted on the television. The whole application is written in the Java language. All the information about users and the match are stored in a MySQL database, which is accessible through a php script placed on the server with the database. The applicaton is running in a set-top box and communicates with the script through the set-top box return channel. The channel between the server and the script is unsecure, so the communication has to be encrypted. The encryption process uses a symmetric-key cipher AES, which uses a shared secret key for encryption and decryption. Each application generates its own pseuodorandom and crypthographicaly strong AES key and sends it to the server. To secure the secret key transsmision is used the public-key cipher RSA.

Full text
Abstract:
The multidrug resistance associated proteins (MRP(human)Mrp (rat) are ATP-dependent transporters responsible for the efflux of a wide range of substrates, including endogenous compounds e.g. bilirubin, drug metabolites e.g. paracetamol glucuronide and fluorescent dyes e.g. 5 (and 6)-carboxy-2’,7’-dichlorofluorescein (CDF). Mrp1-6 (<i>abccl-6)</i> are expressed in rat liver, with Mrp2 being expressed at the highest level. Isolation of hepatocytes by <i>in situ</i> collagenase perfusion causes bile canalicular disruption and internalisation of Mrp2. Cells cultured in a sandwich configuration of Matrigel or collagen (Type 1) showed bile canalicular reformation at different days in cell culture, depending on the extracellular matrix and time of overlay. We have developed a method for quantifying Mrp-mediated efflux in hepatocytes cultured in a sandwich configuration of collagen (Type 1). This method is unique in its ability to distinguish between sinusoidal efflux, canalicular efflux and diffusion in intact hepatocytes. Alternative <i>in vitro</i> models of Mrp2-mediated efflux include the vesicular (direct and indirect methods) and the ATPase assays. We have used these assays to identify atorvastatin, fluvastatin, lovastatin, pitavastatin, pravastatin, rosuvastatin and simvastatin as substrates of human and rat MRP2/Mrp2. A close correlation was seen between the kinetic parameters of transport of the Mrp2 substrate; CDF determined in sandwich cultured rat hepatocytes using the method above (Km = 3.5 – 9.9 μM), vesicle preparations (Km = 37.9 μM) and membrane preparations (Km = 18.7 μM). We also present data to implicate the nuclear receptors, PXR, CAR and FXR in the regulation of <i>abcc2</i> and <i>abcc3</i> and PXR and CAR in <i>abcc1</i> gene regulation. <i>Abcc2 </i>and abcc5<i> </i>are also up-regulated in response to a toxic insult to the cell, probably via Nrf2 activation, suggesting a role in cell defence.

Jin, Z. "Depth-map-assisted texture and depth map super-resolution." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2015. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/3000968/.

Full text
Abstract:
With the development of video technology, high definition video and 3D video applications are becoming increasingly accessible to customers. The interactive and vivid 3D video experience of realistic scenes relies greatly on the amount and quality of the texture and depth map data. However, due to the limitations of video capturing hardware and transmission bandwidth, transmitted video has to be compressed which degrades, in general, the received video quality. This means that it is hard to meet the users’ requirements of high definition and visual experience; it also limits development of future applications. Therefore, image/video super-resolution techniques have been proposed to address this issue. Image super-resolution aims to reconstruct a high resolution image from single or multiple low resolution images captured of the same scene under different conditions. Based on the image type that needs to be super-resolved, image super-resolution includes texture and depth image super-resolutions. If classified based on the implementation methods, there are three main categories: interpolation-based, reconstruction-based and learning-based super-resolution algorithms. This thesis focuses on exploiting depth data in interpolation-based super-resolution algorithms for texture video and depth maps. Two novel texture and one depth super-resolution algorithms are proposed as the main contributions of this thesis. The first texture super-resolution algorithm is carried out in the Mixed Resolution (MR) multiview video system where at least one of the views is captured at Low Resolution (LR), while the others are captured at Full Resolution (FR). In order to reduce visual uncomfortableness and adapt MR video format for free-viewpoint television, the low resolution views are super-resolved to the target full resolution by the proposed virtual view assisted super resolution algorithm. The inter-view similarity is used to determine whether to fill the missing pixels in the super-resolved frame by virtual view pixels or by spatial interpolated pixels. The decision mechanism is steered by the texture characteristics of the neighbors of each missing pixel. Thus, the proposed method can recover the details in regions with edges while maintaining good quality at smooth areas by properly exploiting the high quality virtual view pixels and the directional correlation of pixels. The second texture super-resolution algorithm is based on the Multiview Video plus Depth (MVD) system, which consists of textures and the associated per-pixel depth data. In order to further reduce the transmitted data and the quality degradation of received video, a systematical framework to downsample the original MVD data and later on to super-resolved the LR views is proposed. At the encoder side, the rows of the two adjacent views are downsampled following an interlacing and complementary fashion, whereas, at the decoder side, the discarded pixels are recovered by fusing the virtual view pixels with the directional interpolated pixels from the complementary downsampled views. Consequently, with the assistance of virtual views, the proposed approach can effectively achieve these two goals. From previous two works, we can observe that depth data has big potential to be used in 3D video enhancement. However, due to the low spatial resolution of Time-of-Flight (ToF) depth camera generated depth images, their applications have been limited. Hence, in the last contribution of this thesis, a planar-surface-based depth map super-resolution approach is presented, which interpolates depth images by exploiting the equation of each detected planar surface. Both quantitative and qualitative experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach over benchmark methods.

Vaughan, Owen. "The r-map, c-map and black hole solutions." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2012. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/8953/.

Full text
Abstract:
We consider various geometrical and physical aspects of the r-map and c-map, which are two maps induced by the dimensional reduction of 5d and 4d, N = 2 supergravity coupled to vector multiplets respectively. We treat reduction over a spacelike or timelike dimension on an equal footing, and prove, for the first time, that the target manifold in the image of the timelike c-map is para-quaternion Kahler. In order to do this we provide a new formulation of projective special Kahler geometry based on real Darboux coordinates, which is useful both mathematically and physically in its own right. As an application we investigate how the r-map and c-map can be used to generate new stationary black hole solutions. In four dimensions we construct new extremal non-BPS solutions, and in both four and five dimensions we construct new non-extremal solutions. We also take the first steps towards constructing new rotating solutions, though at this stage we only recover known solutions. The systematic and geometrical nature of these constructions allows us to gain a deeper understanding of many familiar properties of black holes in supergravity, such as the attractor mechanism and the transformation of BPS into non-BPS black holes using a field rotation matrix. We also observe an interesting and novel feature relating to non-extremal black holes: in order for solutions to correspond to non-extremal black holes with finite scalar fields we find that the number of integration constants must reduce by half. This suggests that non-extremal black holes always satisfy first order equations similar to their extremal counterparts. For STU-like models all calculations are performed explicitly.

Xie, Ming. "Rethinking Map Literacy and an Analysis of Quantitative Map Literacy." Scholar Commons, 2019. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7989.

Full text
Abstract:
Maps are increasingly being used in traditional and virtual media, and civic discourse on political, social, and environmental issues, among others, is more and more becoming influenced by them. The often-used expression of a “picture tells a 1000 words” has never been so apt in our progressively more visual world. Despite this increased role and importance of maps, map literacy, as a field of research, remains rather underdeveloped. This is especially so for thematic maps, the very type of map that is finding increasing currency in discourse. As part of this under-developed nature of map literacy, the quantitative skills used in map reading and interpretation have not been systematically investigated, and previous commentary on the subject has been limited to listings of relatively low-level skills. As modern technologies, such as GIS, enable the more sophisticated production of maps, their interpretation can come to depend on more advanced quantitative literacy. The quantitative literacy required for map interpretation can also be expected to vary significantly with the type of map, and while map literacy studies generally recognize the broad distinction of reference and thematic maps, they do not provide a more nuanced framework for investigating how quantitative literacy may vary both within these broad categories and for maps which overlap these categories. This dissertation represents a first attempt to address these issues, and at least provide conceptual frameworks for their investigation. For the first conceptual framework, the dissertation introduces a three-set Venn model to discuss the content and relationships of three “literacies”: map literacy, quantitative literacy, and background information. As part of this, the field of Quantitative Map Literacy (QMP) is introduced and defined as the knowledge (concepts, skills and facts) required to accurately read, use, interpret, and understand the quantitative information embedded in geographic backgrounds. It is conceptualized as the intersection of the Map Literacy and Quantitative Literacy “sets”. The dissertation also introduces the conceptual framework of a compositional triangle based on the ratio of reference to thematic map purpose and the level of generalization/distortion within maps. This framework allows for any type of map to be located within the triangle and then related to the type and level of quantitative literacy they demand. Finally, based on these two frameworks, the dissertation uses the pedagogical tool of “word problems” to explore the variability of map reading skills and knowledge, and does this for specific map examples.

Nowadays people use maps everyday in many situations. Maps are available and free. What was expensive and required the user to get a paper copy in a shop is now available on any Smartphone. Not only maps but location-related information visible on the maps is an obvious feature. This work is an application of opportunistic networking for the spreading of maps and location-related data in an ad-hoc, distributed fashion. The system can also add user-created information to the map in form of points of interest. The result is a best effort service for spreading of maps and points of interest. The exchange of local maps and location-related user data is done on the basis of the user position. In particular, each user receives the portion of the map containing his/her surroundings along with other information in form of points of interest.

<p>The content of this report describes a bachelor thesis performed on commission by Cybercom Sweden West. The report describes techniques, methods and development tools used during the project. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the usefulness with a new Bluetooth profile called Medical Device Profile (MDP) on the Medica trade fair 14-11-2007. The MDP profile that will be released in turn of the ear 07/08 is primarily intended to be used in medical devices. The demonstration is to be made by building a demonstrator consisting of an application running on a smartphone with Bluetooth abilities. The application will handle the Bluetooth connection between the smartphone and the oximeter, the data encryption and other functionalities and presenting the figures received form the oximeter in a Graphical User Interface (GUI).The final demonstrator consists of a smartphone application programmed in Symbian C++, which communicates with the oximeter using the Bluetooth Serial Port Profile (SPP). The application runs on UIQ 3.0 based smartphones and displays heart rate and %SpO2 (The percentage of oxygen saturation in blood), which the application receives from the oximeter. The original idea was to use the MDP profile by porting Cybercom's C version of the MDP to Symbian OS for the Bluetooth communication, depending on various factors described more in detail inside the report this was not done. The purpose of the project was still reached, even though another profile then MDP was used. This was done by replacing the considered oximeter for an older version which is using the SPP. By using SPP the same result will be demonstrated but with an older technique, and this will achieve the same result on Medica trade fair. The project was demonstrated on Medica with a successful result.</p>

Abstract:
It was estimated that more than 52,350 new cases were diagnosed in 2010, being the second cause of death by cancer in man. The prognosis depends mainly on Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) serum levels, tumor stage (TNM) and histological grade (Gleason), but these parameters, even combined, are insufficient to define the correct prognosis of PCa. Therefore research has been directed towards the identification of molecular alterations that may predict potential aggressiveness of PCa. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are proteins that belong to a family of about 30 proteolytic enzymes that degrade various components of the extracellular matrix. The analysis of MMPs expression has been studied as a sensitive and specific marker of prognosis of several tumors, and special attention was focused in the group of gelatinases, MMP-2 and MMP-9.Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9 genes and proteins by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry in localized PCa. We also evaluated the expression of genes that are involved in the control of MMP-2 and MMP as activators (MMP- 14, IL-8) or inhibitors (TIMP-1, TIMP-2, RECK and TGF-).Materials and Methods: The casuistic consisted of 79 surgical specimens from patients with localized PCa who underwent radical prostatectomy between September 1997 and February 2000. The control group was composed of specimens from 11 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) treated surgically with retropubic prostatectomy. The results of the 8 genes expression, through qRTPCR and immunohistochemistry, were correlated to the diagnosis and prognosis of PCa. The protein expression analysis was carried out in 40 patients of the casuistic. Results: The MMP-9 was overexpressed, while MMP-2, TIMP-1, TIMP-2, MMP-14, RECK, IL-8, and TGF- were underexpressed in malignant prostate tissue compared to BPH. Patients with Gleason7 had higher expression of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 (p=0.04, p=0.02 respectively). According to the preoperative PSA value, we found that patients with preoperative PSA10 ng/mL had a median of expression of 5.62 compared to 2.76 when PSA<10 ng/mL (p=0.033). There were no statistical differences between expression of the eight genes and biochemical recurrence during follow up. However, the higher MMP-9 expression was marginally associated with recurrence, the median was of 6.29 in recurrence patients compared to 3.25 in those without recurrence (p=0.090). Regarding the protein expression, we found a higher positivity of MMP-9, MMP-2, TGF-, IL-8 e MMP-14 expression in PCa, and a correlation between the lack of TIMP-1 and tumor recurrence. Conclusion: MMP-9 is overexpressed while MMP-2, TIMP-1, TIMP-2, MMP-14, RECK, TGF- and IL-8 are underexpressed in CaP. According to the prognostic factors, we observed that increased level of MMP-9 was associated with pre-surgical PSA10 ng/mL. Also there was a tendency of association between higher MMP- 9 expression and biochemical recurrence. Overexpression of MMP-9 can be explained by the underexpression of their major inhibitors TIMP-1 and RECK. According to protein expression we found that absence of TIMP-1 is correlated with biochemical recurrence in the PCa

Abstract:
In this current economical environment business are looking to become more efficient to lower the costs and provide a better service. New technological advances are quickly being integrated to automate or more rapidly perform the task. Most of these technological advances are in the field of information and communication technology (ICT). Nevertheless, the introduction of technologies is not enough, as better management strategies and organization structures are needed to develop the business further. Duroc Machine Tools identified a problem within the sales and service approach, which does not employ ICT tools while communicating with the customer. Therefore, the cost per order is high and a direct one to one communication is the only approach. The project focuses on lowering the cost of each order, without decreasing the customer care and the overall quality of the service. This was firstly done by studying the possibilities of what ICT tools would be applied to enhance the communication processes. Data was collected from statistical sources to give an overall idea. Next case studies of companies within similar industries and region were performed to indicate in more detail the tools used and available. An educated guess was formulated of what ICT tools should be considered, the more infrequent or conflicting ICTs recommended were verified by interviewing employees with a demonstration of the tools application. The second stage was to analyze the organizational structure and applying lean tools to add value to the customer. A customer perspective is at the centre of this theory and several tools were used to improve the system. Finally the ICT tools were integrated with the new organizational structure to demonstrate the developments possibilities in the future vision. The study found that common ICT functions such as information upload have become essential for doing business today. Another trend that was established is that live information or user-generated approach which is a must have factor in the future ICT platform, this was mostly suggested by introducing micro-blogs. The infrequent and conflicting ICTs within the industry that were recommended were: e-commerce, order management and model driven process solving (MDP). The verification showed a strong consent within the company to apply such tools. To finish the project a strategy of implementation was formulated to guide the company towards its vision of a better system.
