Patrick, James Earle. "The prophetic structure of 1-2 Samuel." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2016. https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:309e6831-242b-40c9-9271-360dd4bec2d0.

Abstract:
The book of 1-2 Samuel, originally one scroll, is an episodic narrative recounting how the ancient Israelite monarchy was established around 1000 BC by the prophet Samuel and the kings Saul and David. For well over a century historical critics have sought to discern the process of its composition, proposing various conclusions with little consensus. Presently it is generally believed that several blocks of traditional material on common themes (e.g. the History of David's Rise) were brought together in the later pre-exilic period as part of the so-called Deuteronomistic History. This thesis chooses to begin with the present limits of 1-2 Samuel (without including, for example, 1Kgs 1-2), and undertakes to apply rhetorical analysis to all fifty-five chapters, episode by episode, each in its final-form position. The particular structural technique that has been discerned throughout this book is inverted parallelism with an unparalleled centre, here termed 'concentrism'. The unique contributions of this thesis are firstly a careful methodology for concentrism in Hebrew narrative, based on Hebrew poetic and oral composition and proposing specific criteria for identifying and verifying such structures. Secondly, the thesis attempts to account for the current position of every episode in the book, discerning how each contributes to the larger work as regards literary structure and rhetorical message. The resulting arrangement demonstrates an overall unity of technique and authorial perspective, focused on the themes of prophecy (hence the thesis title), deliverance from military attack, religious devotion and dynastic succession. The centre of this thesis therefore provides a detailed description of the discovered structure, one chapter for each of the book's two primary segments (1Sam 1 - 2Sam 6; 2Sam 7-24). A lengthy preceding chapter addresses various theoretical issues often raised relating to such concentric patterns (often inadequately labelled 'chiasmus'/'chiastic'). A summary chapter likewise follows the central chapters, revisiting themes of the methodology and drawing conclusions together. An initial chapter outlines past and present compositional theories, and a concluding chapter suggests further avenues of future research.

Abstract:
A narrative paradox occurs when the suspension of disbelief falters due to tension betweenthe urgency of the narrative and agency used by the player to pursue non-narrative activities. In this paper, we do a close reading on the video game Persona 5 to examine which elementsare utilised to limit or avoid narrative paradoxes. The analysis consisted of categorising thegame’s events, whereafter a few non-obligatory events from the game were chosen for anin-depth analysis. This served to find out which desire: agency, urgency, or both, the eventsmotivate through its narrative. We introduce the concept of the Plot Bubble as a tool withwhich to create narrative structures that are less prone to causing narrative paradoxes whencombined with relevant narrative elements. The narrative structure and elements of Persona 5are used as practical examples of how such design choices can motivate the player to act inaccordance with the narrative context, as well as to support this desire through the actionsavailable in the game world.<br>En narrativ paradox inträffar när ens upphävande av misstro fallerar på grund av en spänningmellan narrativets brådskande karaktär och behörigheten som spelaren har för att utövaicke-narrativa aktiviteter.

Karanja, Daniel Njoroge. "Perpetrator and Victim Constructions of Justice, Forgiveness and Trauma Healing: Results of a Thematic Narrative Study of Intra-group Conflict in Colonial Central Kenya, 1952-1962." NSUWorks, 2015. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/shss_dcar_etd/21.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation investigated how the Gikuyu people of central Kenya understood justice, forgiveness and trauma healing or their absence during a decade of intra-group reciprocal violence. This qualitative research study employed the narrative research method utilizing the "Williams Model" (Riessman, 2008). Field interviews were guided by a primary research question: What do the narratives of perpetrators and victims in reciprocal violence reveal about their understanding of justice, forgiveness and trauma healing or their absence? Fourteen research participants aged 78 to 92 years shared their full narratives. Current conflict analysis literature overwhelmingly centers on the victims and less on perpetrators. The reseach sample allowed perpetrator voices to be heard. The findings of this study suggest that the absence of justice as defined by the stakeholders is a primary perceived barrier towards forgiveness and trauma healing in post-conflict environments. While restorative justice literature offers hope in repairing harm, it's applicability in this study bears some complications when faced with the unreadiness of perpetrators to face their victims in a voluntary process. An extended discussion on restorative justice is offered under implications. Fair land re-distribution was identified as the most preferred response to the question of justice but is yet to be addressed. This stalemate suggests the need for a new negotiated framing and definition of justice if progress is to be expected. The study found out that forgiveness and trauma healing are desired but perceived as impossible goals. Researchers and policy makers could benefit from the findings especially in promoting native and localized restorative justice processes in order to terminate cycles of reciprocal violence.

Pletcher, James Alan. "Narrative structure and narrative texture in the 'Aithiopika' of Heliodorus." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/15450.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis consists of four individual studies, divided into two sections; "Narrative Structure" and "Narrative Texture". The first chapter ("Heliodoros and the Conventions of Romance") addresses the issue of the essence of romance; it attempts to get behind the narrative of the Aithiopika in such a way as to reveal how Heliodoros works within the boundaries and received practice of the genre ancient romance, and how he adapts and deviates from them. The second chapter ("Hearing Voices: Incorporated Genres in the Aithiopika") deals with genre, but in a different context. This study takes a concept- incorporated genre- from the theorist M.M. Bakhtin, and applies it to Heliodoros' narrative. Here the term "genre" takes on a broader significance, meaning not the romances themselves, but types of narrative, and ways of narrating, which Heliodoros has introduced into his story. Both chapters one and two are systematic analyses of the text; they deal with how Heliodoros has structured his narrative in ways conventional and unconventional. In the final chapters the term genre encompasses specific works and literary groupings. These studies help to demonstrate how Heliodoros has fleshed out the basic structure of the Aithiopika, or, in other words, they provide a feel for some of the texture of the romance. "Heliodoros and Homer" is explicitly narratological in outlook, showing one way in which Heliodoros has provided a paradigm for reading, perhaps not just the novel itself, but specifically within the novel the references to and allusions from Homer. "Heliodoros and Tragedy" tackles the meaning of theatricality, and references to the theatre, in an author writing in the late Roman Empire. But this chapter, too, provides a glimpse at the narrative texture, especially with regard to the way in which Heliodoros co-opted yet another literary predecessor, Euripides.

Edwards, E. "Narrative structure in Malory's Morte Darthur." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 1996. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.598784.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation considers the principles of structure in the <I>Morte Darthur</I>. I conceive of structure as an internal logic which generates the selection of incidents and stories and which governs the additions and deletions which Malory makes to his source material. I consider Malory as a participant in a textual tradition, Arthurian fiction, which has its own economy of symbols, and I explore the ways in which Malory deploys the Arthurian semiotics. I develop a theory of 'symbolic structure' to account for the generation and combination of narrative elements in Malory's work. I describe features typical of the work's narrative lexicon, such as redundancy and ellipsis, and I consider the relations of entire stories (such as "Balin" and "Gareth") to each other and to the symbolic economy of the "hoole book." Because Malory is principally a redactor and translator, the structure of his narrative is often the same as that of his sources. Alternatively, the structure of the sources often reveals what has caused Malory's version to be the way it is. This thesis therefore considers the sources in French and English in some detail, and sees the <I>Morte Darthur</I> both as a representative of the traditional oeuvre of Arthurian literature, and in some cases as a response to it. Thus I argue, for example, that Malory's interpolation of "The Healing of Sir Urry" provides a symbolic solution to certain problems raised in his main source, <I>Le Mort le Roi Artu</I>. Among the results of my inquiry is an account of historical change as it is registered in symbolic practice; by examining Malory's text--sometimes in minute detail--I show the ways in which a late redaction while to a large extent conserving thirteenth-century narratives and their concerns records, often in displaced ways, its own particular era and author.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2012.<br>This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.<br>Cataloged from student submitted PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 97-100).<br>Narrative structure is an ubiquitous and intriguing phenomenon. By virtue of structure we recognize the presence of Villainy or Revenge in a story, even if that word is not actually present in the text. Narrative structure is an anvil for forging new artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques, and is a window into abstraction and conceptual learning as well as into culture and its in influence on cognition. I advance our understanding of narrative structure by describing Analogical Story Merging (ASM), a new machine learning algorithm that can extract culturally-relevant plot patterns from sets of folktales. I demonstrate that ASM can learn a substantive portion of Vladimir Propp's in influential theory of the structure of folktale plots. The challenge was to take descriptions at one semantic level, namely, an event timeline as described in folktales, and abstract to the next higher level: structures such as Villainy, Stuggle- Victory, and Reward. ASM is based on Bayesian Model Merging, a technique for learning regular grammars. I demonstrate that, despite ASM's large search space, a carefully-tuned prior allows the algorithm to converge, and furthermore it reproduces Propp's categories with a chance-adjusted Rand index of 0.511 to 0.714. Three important categories are identied with F-measures above 0.8. The data are 15 Russian folktales, comprising 18,862 words, a subset of Propp's original tales. This subset was annotated for 18 aspects of meaning by 12 annotators using the Story Workbench, a general text-annotation tool I developed for this work. Each aspect was doubly-annotated and adjudicated at inter-annotator F-measures that cluster around 0.7 to 0.8. It is the largest, most deeply-annotated narrative corpus assembled to date. The work has significance far beyond folktales. First, it points the way toward important applications in many domains, including information retrieval, persuasion and negotiation, natural language understanding and generation, and computational creativity. Second, abstraction from natural language semantics is a skill that underlies many cognitive tasks, and so this work provides insight into those processes. Finally, the work opens the door to a computational understanding of cultural in influences on cognition and understanding cultural differences as captured in stories.<br>by Mark Alan Finlayson.<br>Ph.D.

Rosales, Alirio. "The Narrative structure of scientific theorizing." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/49982.

Full text
Abstract:
I argue that many scientific theories and explanations are irreducibly narrative in character. To this end I propose an account of a generalized narrative, which goes against the widespread view that narratives are by definition particularized. On my account, generalized narratives are sequences of causally connected event-types in the duration of a system, with a beginning, middle and end (whereas particularized narratives are causally connected sequences of event-tokens). Many important scientific theories have a narrative structure that is not reducible to the kinds of formal statements typically identified with theory formulations, i.e., equations and “if-then” conditionals. Similarly, some scientific explanations have a narrative structure that is not reducible to the structure of an “argument” with premises and a conclusion. Narratives, generalized or particularized, play a threefold role in theorizing: heuristic, structural, and explanatory: 1) Through narratives, scientists explore imaginative scenarios where possible causal connections and outcomes are explored before a mathematical or otherwise formal framework is in place; 2) Narratives constitute the core of some theories, and can embed formal elements in them; 3) The causal order of event-types or event-tokens forms the basis of explanations. Throughout, I motivate and illustrate my proposal with examples from evolutionary biology and physics.<br>Arts, Faculty of<br>Philosophy, Department of<br>Graduate

Abstract:
This piece of research analyses lexical inferencing, the process of working out the meanings of unknown words using context clues. Three main aspects are considered: to what extent subjects succeed or fail in making plausible inferences about word meaning, their feelings and attitudes towards the process, and the techniques or strategies which they resQrt to. The thesis is structured as a research narrative, pre~ senting twelve studies dating from 1983 to 1989. Subjects were adult Brazilians, reading in English as a foreign language, and/or in their native language, Portuguese. Adult lexical inference is shown to be more successful than previous studies using children reading in their native language had suggested. Evidence is presented to suggest that subjects characteristically use~ a narrow context of a few words on either side of the target item in attempting lexical inference, and that this breadth of context was sufficient for most inferences. The suggestion that there may be a vocabulary 'threshold', below which lexical inference is impeded, is rejected. Implausible inferences came generally either from mis-recognition of word forms, or from ignoring wider amounts of context. Evidence is presented to suggest that familiarity of the underlying concept is a major variable. Subjects' hypotheses about word meaning were mostly at an appropriate level of specificity, and gradually refined as more evidehce became available. There was little evidence of over-certainty. Further variables of importance are subjects' beliefs about what "knowing" a word is, and their level of awareness about the lexical inference process. A wide range of feelings (positive, negative and of caution) were observed. No one pattern of strategy use was firmly aS$ociated with greater lexical inference success rates. Instead, subjects made great use of background knowledge and lexis-based strategies and little use of discoursal or grammatical features.

Lander, Rachel. "Teaching narrative structure to children with poor oral narrative skills in schools." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2012. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/359662/.

Full text
Abstract:
The review discusses the importance of narrative structure for cognitive development and psychological health. Narrative structure is regarded as representing and developing internal cognitive structures, known as narrative schemas. The components of narrative schemas and thus the structure of narratives are described as a set of components collectively known as ‘story grammar’. Models of the development of narrative structure are compared and contrasted and discussed in relation to additional cognitive and linguistic components required to produce a narrative. Individual differences in narrative structure are discussed in terms of their social and environmental origins; specifically due to the quality of parental co-constructed narrative conversations and socio-economic status. The relationship between narrative structure and developmental outcomes are then explored; notably reading comprehension and behavioural adjustment. A critical review of school group interventions based on the principles of narrative structure is then provided. Finally, the current literature is summarised, providing suggestions for future research. The empirical paper evaluated the effectiveness of a published oral narrative intervention by Shanks (2001) on measures of Oral Narration and Narrative Comprehension for children aged 6-7 years with poor oral narrative skills. The intervention group (N=12) showed a significant increase in Oral Narration score between pre-test and post-test compared to a wait-list control group (N=11). Between pre-test and follow-up measures that were taken 6 weeks after the end of the intervention, no significant increases in Oral Narration were found between groups. The intervention group also showed no significant increases on Narrative Comprehension between pre-test and post-test or between pre-test and follow-up. The correlation between Oral Narration and behaviour was explored. Significant negative correlations were found between Oral Narration and teacher measures of behaviour at pre-test and follow-up, specifically regarding hyperactivity and inattention. The results question the long-term benefits of the intervention and suggestions for future research are provided.

Abstract:
Abstract Finnish male teacher has been viewed related to e.g. their low number, suspicions of criminal record and salary policy in the past years' teacher discussion. This educational-historical study examines Finnish male teachers' autobiographies and films on them by using narrative approach. The period in focus is the time of independence. Honest attitude towards life, an attempt to serve and please are reflected in the narratives of male teachers' autobiographies. Views on cooperation and voluntary work are emphasised in the narratives of older generation. Conflicts in working and private life increase in narratives describing the period after the war. All teacher generations mention the valuing of teachers' work but the meaning of valuing decreases towards the time of comprehensive school. Finnish school management has been remembered and investigated in the data based on both idyll and conflict. In so far as films are considered, the prevalence of conflict is significant. A mediated solution is often found for conflicts. Many films criticise school as a collective upbringing and educational community. Negative features of school are transferred to screen by many films. Based on the films, the teaching personnel seem to be divided. One group of teachers lean on to the strong institution in their use of power in educating and teaching whereas the other group of teachers presented by the films seem to understand the meaning of individual teaching and upbringing. Impression based on the watched films is that the values and aims of general school discussion are seen on the screen. At times, films also criticise school values. During the period in focus, model teaching has changed from Christianity-based model towards a pluralistic educator influenced by democracy. If films are studied based on their writers, a group of Finnish film directors seem to have a rather negative view on their male teachers. The role of female writers has also had an effect on the descriptions of males. However, the narratives of autobiographies do not strengthen the message conveyed from film texts, for there is no authority based drive towards teaching nor unreasonable keeping under discipline in teachers' narratives. In this study I investigated male teachers in historical context based on films and autobiographies. The general fading of role model and model teaching of male teachers after the war can be seen in the data. Teacher profession is becoming more and more women's profession in Finland. Current interpretation of equality regulations and salaries that are fallen behind strengthen this development. The meanings and hidden expectations set on male teachers in Finnish educational system are continuously transferred to women. Based on the data, it is possible to see the usefulness of male teacher in school. At the same time, many questionable practices that gender-based authority building can include, are seen. Male teacher in his profession has had to function under a strong obligation and control set by the society and the people using school services. This has often resulted in the forming of divided self concept. Teacher's private and working life have often been controversial<br>Tiivistelmä Viime vuosien opettajapuheessa suomalaista miesopettajaa on sivuttu muun muassa lukumääräisen vähyyden, rikostaustaepäilyjen ja palkkauspolitiikan yhteydessä. Elokuvien osalta konfliktivoittoisuus on merkitsevää. Tarkasteltavalla ajanjaksolla esikuvallinen opettajuus on muuttunut kristillisyyden sävyttämästä esimerkistä kohti demokratian muovaamaa moniarvoista kasvattajaa. Mikäli elokuvaa tarkastellaan tekijälähtöisesti, on suomalaisen elokuvan ohjaajakunnalla melko negatiivinen näkemys miesopettajistaan. Opettajan ammatti on Suomessa yhä enenevästi naisten ammatti. Nykyhetken tasa-arvosäädösten tulkinta ja palkkauksen jälkeenjääneisyys varmistavat kehitystä. Merkitykset ja piilo-odotukset, joita miesopettajalle on suomalaisessa koulujärjestelmässä asetettu, siirtyvät enenevästi naiselle. Tutkimuslähteiden valossa on mahdollista nähdä miesopettajan tarpeellisuutta koulussa.

Abstract:
<p> The purpose of this dissertation was to examine how I can facilitate experiences with art that promote "productive ambiguity," or the ability to transform tensions that disrupt our current understandings into opportunities for personal growth. Ambiguity becomes productive when our encounters with difference stimulate curiosity, imagination, and consideration of new possibilities and perspectives. While employing a multi-methods practitioner inquiry that combined elements of action research, autoethnography and arts based research, I addressed the following questions with a voluntary group of fifth grade research participants: How can I facilitate experiences with art that promote productive ambiguity? How do my students interact with the various visual content and instructional strategies that I develop and implement? How might these interactions inform my future teaching practice, and how does my own reflective visual journaling process inform my research? In addition to employing reflective sketching to document and analyze data, I also presented research findings in the form of a visual research narrative. </p><p> My analysis of research findings produced the following teaching strategies for facilitating meaningful experiences with art that promote productive ambiguity: (a) Use an inquiry approach to instruction as much as possible in order to position students to actively navigate the space between the known and unknown while seeking fresh understandings rather than passively accepting new information. (b) Explore how new concepts or themes relate to students' lives in order to situate unknowns in relation to their present knowns. (c) Aim to balance structure, flexibility and accountability while developing and implementing curricula. This promotes productive ambiguity as both teachers and students negotiate their pre-conceived ideas or plans and push themselves to respond to challenges encountered within their immediate environment. (d) In order to avoid unnecessary confusion, explicitly state that students should takes risks while generating new ideas rather than identifying a pre-existing solution. (e) Finally, ask students to identify why skills and knowledge generated during these activities are valuable in order to promote meta-cognition of how this ambiguous space can become more productive. </p><p> In addition to these practical findings, research participants agreed that sharing their interpretations of visual phenomena with one another enabled them to understand each other better. I also discovered the ways in which productive ambiguity emerged in the spaces in between my teacher/researcher/artist roles when I perceived challenges as prospects for personal transformation. As a whole, this dissertation exhibited how relational aesthetics and arts based research theories translated into my elementary art classroom practice while simultaneously integrating these concepts into the research study design and presentation.</p>

Christopher, Justin. "Testimony in narrative educational research: a qualitative interview, narrative analysis and epistemological evaluation." Diss., University of Iowa, 2017. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/5730.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to assess issues that arise in the context of epistemological claims in narrative educational research by means of narrative analysis and epistemological evaluation. The research questions which guided the study were: 1) To what extent is epistemology considered by narrative educational researchers?; 2) What issues do narrative educational researchers perceive when capturing participant testimony?; 3) What procedures do narrative educational researchers carry out which assure of methodological rigor?; and 4) What additional procedures, either before, during or after a study, can narrative educational researchers carry forth to assure that the research is the most meaningful for the researcher, the participant and anyone else who reads the research study? I applied multiple methods to address these questions, narrative thematic analysis and epistemological evaluation. Research participants included four narrative educational researchers. First, based on interviews, and after two rounds of open coding, narrative thematic analysis provided several themes which emerged based on the testimony provided by the research participants. Following the creation of themes, I completed the narrative thematic analysis by discussing how participant responses fit within the themes. Second, I epistemologically evaluated the quality of narrative educational research by relying on epistemological theory and concepts found in philosophical literature. The theoretical foundation for this work arose from developments that largely build and extend from classical reductionist and nonreductionist positions on the epistemology and social epistemology of testimony. Results from the evaluation provided a mix of strengths and weaknesses epistemologically, and therefore methodologically, in narrative educational research. Positively, I found strength in the methodological approach of building a close relationship between researcher and participant, and strength is found in a level of triangulation to address validity concerns. For weaknesses, I found that too much trust is offered by the researcher to the participant, both in themselves as well as in their testimony. Relatedly, accuracy in recall from memory and the dearth of concern about truth also presented issues. I recommended that in working to assure that trust is offered and justified by both the speaker and hearer, with greater concern to accuracy and truth, testimonial beliefs are more likely to be warranted. Future studies can focus on the inclusion of teachers, students and principals to provide additional insight, and a combining of a rich conceptual framework with a rigorous analytic approach to maintain the strengths of narrative research in education while addressing the weaknesses.

Abstract:
Em Volpi, o amadurecimento da experiência pessoal e artística suprime contornos e detalhes, e, através da lógica formal moderna, faz emergir a força das relações pictóricas intrínsecas, isto é, a sua própria estrutura.<br>The works of Alfredo Volpi characterizes itself by a dynamic of the form which, almost from a handiwork way, reaches the autonomous pictorial modern construction of space. This acknowledgement has taken us to an analysis of his wide production, following his attempts on the object, his gradual purification and relative abstraction, which make his esthetical qualities even stronger by the renovation of the representation`s code. In Volpi, the maturity of his personal and artistic experience put down details and contours, and through the modern formal logic, brings up the strength of the intrinsic pictorial relations, that is to say, its own structure.

Abstract:
How can the structures of graphic narratives help us to interrogate, analyse, and ultimately ground stories of ourselves and our world? By not relying solely on verbal or visual language, but the complex interplay between multiple signification strategies, comics open up possibilities for transcending the limits of any single linguistic mode and more fully enunciating the complex layers of superimposed truths that make up our lived experiences. In this doctoral project, I utilize media-specific analysis of graphic narratives and interrogate the multi-modal communication strategies inherent in comics. The result is a multidisciplinary construction of the structural and semiotic modes of comics as an enactment of contemporary narrative ideals that privilege reader-centric, subjective constructions of meaning. My submission consists of four chapters of written research, to be submitted at the end of January, and a collection of autobiographical narrative works that will form an exhibition which will be shown at the time of the viva in April. The presentation of the textual material is an inseparable component of the content, and a piece of practical work in itself. The chapters can be read in any sequence; for the purposes of this abstract, I will discuss them in alphabetical order. My practice work challenges the traditional use of comics-specific affordances, such as panel borders, gutter, use of space as time, and other verbo-visual techniques by remediating them outwith book and digital book-like objects we associate with graphic narratives. Each chapter in the dissertation is its own book-object that enacts the content as well as relates to the larger body of practice work. Childhood Memoirs—Autobiographical Approaches The use of multiple signification strategies allows for communication that transcends the limits of textual or verbal language and can allow a creator to enunciate what may be unspeakable or incomprehensible, such as moments of trauma. I pay special attention to how subjectivity is presented in graphic memoirs within this context, as the drawn nature of comics allows for shifts in the status of the author/narrator that are unique to the medium. Comics as a Synthetic Medium—A Very Short Introduction The ‘introductory’ chapter contextualizes my research and comics studies more generally within non-binary, non-hierarchical concepts of rhizomatic knowledge structures that utilize the concept of text in the Barthesian sense as a mode of communication rather than solely lexicographic writing. In comics, text and imagery can actively oppose each other, creating a space where new meaning can be synthesized from this tension. This is Derrida’s deconstruction, Benjamin’s inclusion of cultural production in literature, or Barthes’ writerly text. Each utterance on a comics page may convey multiple levels of independent meaning, making it unique among narrative media. By examining the semiotic and structural theories presented by Barthes and Derrida, as well as Benjamin, Deleuze, Witgenstein and others, I develop the case for a comics-specific theory of trans-medial, subjective, deconstructed communication. Mapping the Journey—The Cartography of Autobiography In this chapter, I analyse the mythology of the supposed inductive system of representation in mapping and explore how including a secondary visual semiological system, that of the map, within the primary system of comics impacts reader perception of truth through verifiability. I also explore the intersection of non-representational theory within geography and authentication within autographics. Media Specificity of Non-traditional Graphic Narratives The focus of this chapter is on the impact of disseminatory (re)mediation on the medium of graphic narratives. I assert that neither digital nor print is superior to the other, but deliver different experiences to the reader. Through close analysis of the formal qualities inherent in digital and physical representation of comic content, I articulate the qualities unique to each distribution strategy and theorize ways that creators can take advantage of the media at their disposal. The practical element of my submission takes the form of a collection of objects that utilize a variety of graphic narrative structures outwith traditional comics forms in order to explore facets of my childhood memories. The exhibition will be constituted of several lanterns, dioramas and dolls’ houses, as well as some printed material. I attempt to ground my memories in architecture and place, while aware that the sense of solidity this lends my recollections is a false sense of objective security. To counteract any attempt to present a wholly unified and reliable narratorial self, I present the same places and memories through various angles and media. I make explicit some of the dissonant ‘truths’ myself and other members of my family were presented with, as an attempt to consciously confront the fragility of utilizing such collectively constructed memory to construct a stable self-image.

The contemporary moroccan short story is characterized by the diversity of its form, structure and by the ambiquity of its discourse that unites the real to the imaginative, the fantastic to the folkloric. Such presentation urges the scholar to stop in front of the moroccan short texts, and to try to analyse the different narrative elements under control of which the organization and the arrangement render account of the whole narrative structure and its own secret.

Abstract:
The detective novel, an essentially modern narration, can be compared to e folktale. It is build up of a certain number of fixed structural elements or "fonctions" in the sens of v. Propp, and of simple oppositions. It is also, as the name indicates, a novel, that is the litterary form which refers to a complex universe dealing with social relations, the complexities of biography and the interweaving of intrigue. At the narrative level (fonction, actant, modality), the structure of the detective novel may also be compared with that of classical philosophy of law (Hegel, Kant). The judical relationship of contractuel exchange, which arises from the predominance of exchange value, lesds to the concept of "crime" as primordial, first of all as violation of the law; in which case the subject of the action dispose of only two possible itineraries, one which leads to crime, and the other which remains with the state. Thus, the system of signification articulated by the "juridical text", as well as the correspoding narrative structure, throws light on the specific form of the detective novel. The intertextual analysis allows us to understand the genre as a degraded form of the novel. Reducing the socio-biographical enigma to a factuel enigma with an unambiguous resolution, reduces the ambivalence of the wold to the certainty of interdefined diametrical opposites. In this way the detective novel encloses the writen's task withim the reproduction of a defined structure : an repeats on the level of fictional litterary creation the petrification of sociohuman relations, a consequence of the fetichism of value

Abstract:
The musical component appears at different levels of the narrative discourse of the author, who is himself a pianist. At a thematic level, music way evoke autobiographical elements quite explicitely or it may serve as an implicite or suggestive allusion creating this way a hernandez-style intertextuality. Furthermore, his narrative technique express the presence of a musical metalanguage based on analogies between music and literature. The absence of music often results in interrupting or deviating the narration. The narrative voice is subjected to modal changes and alterations that finally contribute to the peculiarity of the discourse, which itself results from repetition and variation. This means transposition, hence understanting the difference between music and literature. Each of his texts is a new pretext for writing. This aspect is illustrated by his texts, hitherto unpublished, presented here for the first time. The apparently unfinished character of some of his texts doesn't mean the absence of an internal cohesion. Their unisual aspect may be explained by their capacity to integrate different influences and vestiges coming from other codes, namely those of musical semiotics. And yet their message is universal : a modern interpretation of the myth of orpheus

Eisenberg, Joshua Daniel. "Automatic Extraction of Narrative Structure from Long Form Text." FIU Digital Commons, 2018. https://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3912.

Full text
Abstract:
Automatic understanding of stories is a long-time goal of artificial intelligence and natural language processing research communities. Stories literally explain the human experience. Understanding our stories promotes the understanding of both individuals and groups of people; various cultures, societies, families, organizations, governments, and corporations, to name a few. People use stories to share information. Stories are told –by narrators– in linguistic bundles of words called narratives. My work has given computers awareness of narrative structure. Specifically, where are the boundaries of a narrative in a text. This is the task of determining where a narrative begins and ends, a non-trivial task, because people rarely tell one story at a time. People don’t specifically announce when we are starting or stopping our stories: We interrupt each other. We tell stories within stories. Before my work, computers had no awareness of narrative boundaries, essentially where stories begin and end. My programs can extract narrative boundaries from novels and short stories with an F1 of 0.65. Before this I worked on teaching computers to identify which paragraphs of text have story content, with an F1 of 0.75 (which is state of the art). Additionally, I have taught computers to identify the narrative point of view (POV; how the narrator identifies themselves) and diegesis (how involved in the story’s action is the narrator) with F1 of over 0.90 for both narrative characteristics. For the narrative POV, diegesis, and narrative level extractors I ran annotation studies, with high agreement, that allowed me to teach computational models to identify structural elements of narrative through supervised machine learning. My work has given computers the ability to find where stories begin and end in raw text. This allows for further, automatic analysis, like extraction of plot, intent, event causality, and event coreference. These tasks are impossible when the computer can’t distinguish between which stories are told in what spans of text. There are two key contributions in my work: 1) my identification of features that accurately extract elements of narrative structure and 2) the gold-standard data and reports generated from running annotation studies on identifying narrative structure.

Picucci, Marcello Arnaldo. "Non-determinism in the narrative structure of video games." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/2964.

Full text
Abstract:
At the present time, computer games represent a finite interactive system. Even in their more experimental forms, the number of possible interactions between player and NPCs (non-player characters) and among NPCs and the game world has a finite number and is led by a deterministic system in which events can therefore be predicted. This implies that the story itself, seen as the series of events that will unfold during gameplay, is a closed system that can be predicted a priori. This study looks beyond this limitation, and identifies the elements needed for the emergence of a non-finite, emergent narrative structure. Two major contributions are offered through this research. The first contribution comes in the form of a clear categorization of the narrative structures embracing all video game production since the inception of the medium. In order to look for ways to generate a non-deterministic narrative in games, it is necessary to first gain a clear understanding of the current narrative structures implemented and how their impact on users’ experiencing of the story. While many studies have observed the storytelling aspect, no attempt has been made to systematically distinguish among the different ways designers decide how stories are told in games. The second contribution is guided by the following research question: Is it possible to incorporate non-determinism into the narrative structure of computer games? The hypothesis offered is that non-determinism can be incorporated by means of nonlinear dynamical systems in general and Cellular Automata in particular.

Ferreira, Tiago Bento da Silva. "Narrative change in psychotherapy." Doctoral thesis, Universidade de Aveiro, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10773/13144.

Full text
Abstract:
Doutoramento em Psicologia<br>This thesis focuses on the processes of narrative change in psychotherapy. Previous reviews of the processes of narrative change in psychotherapy concluded that a general theory that details narrative concepts appropriate to understand psychotherapy processes, explains the dynamic processes between narratives, and how they relate to positive outcomes is needed. This thesis addresses this issue by suggesting a multi-layered model that accounts for transformations in different layers of narrative organization. Accordingly, a model was specified that considers three layers of narrative organization: a micro-layer of narrative innovations that disrupt the clients’ usual way of construct meaning from life situations (innovative moments), a meso-layer of narrative scripts that integrate these narrative innovations in narrative scripts that consolidate its transformative potential (protonarratives), and, finally, a macro-layer of clients’ life story (self-narrative). Globally, the empirical studies provided support for the conceptual plausibility of this model and to the specific hypothesis that were formulated on its basis. Our observations complement previous research that had underlined the integrative processes either by emphasizing thematic coherence or integration, by emphasizing the role of dynamicity and differentiation of narrative contents and processes. Additionally, they also contribute to expand previous accounts of narrative innovation through insights on the processes that characterize narrative innovation development across psychotherapy. These studies also emphasize the role of quantitative procedures in the study of narrative processes of change as they allow us to accommodate the complexity and dynamic properties of narrative processes.<br>Esta tese centra-se nos processos de mudança narrativa em psicoterapia.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is an exploration, on a professional and personal level, of metaphor as both an object of, and a tool for, research. The methodology used is qualitative, and overall the approach is phenomenographic. The research develops through three stages. Firstly, through an analysis of the metaphors found in the discourse of students, teachers and the government, a model of metaphor has been developed and used to give a framework for the examination of metaphor as the object of research. Secondly, the model has been extended to identify the metaphors by which the reality of the research process is constructed. Metaphor has then been used as a tool of research in order to identify and analyse the metaphors by which the research process has been framed by two researchers working with the same teacher. The three key metaphors identified through this application of the model; narrative, story and voice, have been explored to consider their applicability and relevance as ways of conceptualising research. Finally the implicit metaphor by which this entire study has been framed, research as metaphysics, has been explored through a personal reflection on the reality of the research process for the researcher. The study is located within a postmodernist paradigm through an exploration of the applicability of postmodernist assumptions to this research process. Throughout the work the voice of the researcher narrates her reality contextualising the research process.

Gradual diversification of interpretative approaches infuse this classic novel with various perspectives. Amid the transitions of time and thoughts, literary theories gravitate toward the transcending text while viewpoints and values are constantly evolving. As beliefs and creeds enshrined in the pre-religion period, taboos are not merely an omnipresent existence in all aspects of lives, but also an omnipotent cultural force. Taboos have always reemerged from inundating torrents of civilization and recurred in narratives such as mythology, legends and folklores. By means of reasoning its very existence or accentuating certain undertones, taboos have been disseminated across classes and communities. The advent of narrative style paradigm of novels liberates taboo stories from subjugation as well as extends existing boundaries of folk beliefs and moral standards. Empowered by intentional writers, taboo narratives have transformed into a underlying structure in literary works, which in turns propagate poetic and in-depth notions.

Lee's Legend of a Lecher(好色奇男子)from the perspective of narrative structure. Legend of a Lecher, the thirty-fifth work of Ping-Fong Acting Troupe, which was directed by Hugh K.S. Lee in 2005. At first glance, the presentment seems modern interlace with ancient. In fact, it is a "narrative framework" which dismantle the role of Yongshan(永山) for sixty years. The trip was organized by the illusion of the character Xiaomei(小梅), which made the audience realize the focus of the stage performance and their own life experience during the performance. Therefore, under the main points of the "narrative framework", the heroic journey of Yongshan and Xiaomei's illusion point of view make the main point more extra points. This thesis based on the study of the narrative structure of Hugh K.S. Lee's Legend of a Lecher, explores the effect of " play-within-a-play " under the narrative structure, climbs the literature of Hugh K.S. Lee and his creation of the Ping-Fong Acting Troupe, and the narrative structure literature, trying to find out that Hugh K.S. Lee is unique in the discussion of the narrative structure of many drama creators.

"Narrative Imaginaries: A Transdisciplinary Approach to Mapping Sustainable Futures for the Cantareira System." Master's thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.55570.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Tucked peacefully into mountains just north of the City of São Paulo, the largest metropolitan area in South America, sits the Cantareira Reservoir System. This massive water catchment network received worldwide coverage in 2014 and 2015 as one of the worst droughts in a century hit the region, threatening to collapse the system. In the years since the peak of the drought, the media has changed its focus, the reservoirs have begun a slow recovery, but the people of the region have had to live with the consequences of this difficult period. Faced with an uncertain future, the people continue to grapple with the historic struggles of rural life, while being faced by new threats to the social, environmental, and technological order that has for a long time stabilized the region. My thesis explores the narrative imaginaries that individuals have pertaining to their personal future and that of the region. It delves into the identity of the Rural Producer, the battle to conserve and preserve native forest, issues surrounding the governance of common resources, and what actors perceive to be the biggest advantages and threats to the sustainable future of the region. Utilizing a set of twenty expert elicitation interviews, data was collected from a variety of actors representing a number of roles and positions within the system. My analysis connects disparate individual narratives, illuminating how they connect together with the narratives of other respondents, creating a regional narrative that illustrates a set of desired outcomes for the region. This paper does not attempt to operationalize solutions for the issues that face the region, it does however serve to provide a context for the historical and contemporary issues that exist, a means by which to consider how they may be approached, and ultimately as a tool for policy makers to make more informed decisions going forward.<br>Dissertation/Thesis<br>Masters Thesis Global Technology and Development 2019

Abstract:
This dissertation is a narrative self-representation, one that employs auto/ethnographical methodology to illustrate the process of the transformative learning experience of an international graduate student. This narrative focuses on showing the process, including the continually nature of personal transformation and transformative learning experiences. Through auto/ethnographical portrayal, I show how the process of self-knowing and self-understanding enables me to relate and then transform my knowledge and my understanding of interrelationships between interdisciplinary discourses on education for (social and personal) development and the pedagogical approaches that are employed in formal and nonformal learning settings for empowerment and for the achievement of (social and personal) transformation. I also show how reflexivity enables me to realize possibilities to apply theoretical insight and knowledge that I have acquired from my graduate study in my future practice as a nonformal educator. I use a variety of auto/ethnographical representations to illustrate how the historical shifts and changes in theoretical and epistemological assumptions have continually affected the transformation in the articulations of international development policy and the development of educational models as well as pedagogical interpretations and practices of education for empowerment that are implemented in various societal contexts and institutions. Using self-reflexivity during the process of writing auto/ethnography, I show how my personal experiences, which I attained from different learning contexts, influence the transformation in my understanding, my interpretation and my practices of specific pedagogical approaches for empowerment.

碩士<br>國立陽明大學<br>生物醫學資訊研究所<br>105<br>Background: In NHIRD studies, researchers must define a set of suitable eligibility criteria of study samples. Several researches focus on eligibility criteria have suggested that study results of the same disease would vary with different setting of eligibility criteria. Therefore, the establishment of eligibility criteria is an important step in the process of study design. Aim: To convert the narrative eligibility criteria into structured form, we built a series of R-based text processing methods to analyze the eligibility criteria in NHIRD articles. Methods: There were 2517 NHIRD papers used to build up the text processing tool. We classified their study type from article title, identifying medical concepts and abbreviations, detecting basic demographic characteristics and limitation of specialist, extracting diagnosis codes and temporal relationship, then created the structured eligibility criteria XML files. Results: Although there is still room for improvement on visit of medical utilization and temporal relationship identifying, the high performance in detecting abbreviations, age restrictions and limitation of specialists still show the system useful for eligibility criteria analysis.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立雲林科技大學<br>數位媒體設計系<br>107<br>Music creation is often based on factors such as the creator's own musical literacy and creative needs, and even seeks natural or imitating natural sounds to form a tune. In this study, the narrative structure is used to interpret the text. According to the Kansei Engineering theory, the Expert Interview and the Questionnaire Survey, the vocabulary data of the demand for releasing pressure is sought. This text material creates story content, works with articles to conceive music combinations (range, melody, and paragraphs) and produces modules that release pressure. This creation is a mix of piano and nature sounds. The narrative content in the creation is the result of the questionnaire on the subject, and it is also the consumer orientation of the sensible engineering to correspond to the pattern of music creation. From the music single of this creation, it is verified that the break is different from the creator's self-interpretation, and the objective narrative structure data is used to construct a new form of music creation process by transforming the article into a piece of music.

Yang, Pei-Hsin, and 楊佩欣. "Narrative Research of Chinese male infertility." Thesis, 2016. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/3w46e2.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>輔英科技大學<br>護理系碩士班<br>104<br>Male infertility is responsible for at least 20% of infertility cases, and this number is increasing annually. While most studies have focused on infertility in females, in recent years related research has gradually widened its scope to pay greater attention to infertile couples. There is still much room for examination concerning the innermost feelings of males who are diagnosed with infertility and the experiences they undergo in efforts to conceive. This study aims to create a narrative for the experiences of Chinese males who are infertile, and to understand their behavior and feelings in trying to conceive through their recounting of these experiences. Purposive sampling was adopted in interviewing three infertile male research subjects between May 29, 2015 and November 30, 2015. The research subjects were encouraged to candidly share their experiences with infertility and the treatment process in in-depth interviews. Narrative analysis was then employed to create four themes that summarize the sequence of events experienced by these men: “the cruelty of reality,” “indecision concerning infertility treatment,” “the heartrending process of trying to conceive,” and “whether or not we conceive is not up to me.” The difficulties these research subjects faced with their wives, themselves, their parents, and others were organized into the five themes: “feeling like a failure as a husband,” “difficulty in enjoying intimacy,” “difficulty in facing the fact of being an infertile man,” “feeling imperceptibly yoked as a son,” and the “unspeakable misery of not being able to tell my friends.” Research results illuminated the pain that endured in the depths of their hearts due to the hidden pressures of not being able to conceive and deep feelings of guilt toward their wives. It is hoped that the findings of this study can improve quality of artificial reproduction care units. Furthermore, it is the objective of this study that the privacy of men seeking treatment and counseling in this regard can be enhanced based on a better understanding of how married couples are proactive in working together to conceive; it is expected that married couples that may undertake artificial reproduction in the future can be more in agreement and confident in related treatment.

Abstract:
博士<br>國立臺灣師範大學<br>公民教育與活動領導學系<br>105<br>This study is to explore the meaning of life for surfers through surfing, and to understand the process of meaning making according to their personal experiences. This study was taken with purposely sampling and semi-structured. In this research, five surfers were invited as the participants and through their experiences, exposing their stories of life, and analyzing their process of meaning making. In the way of narrative research and using participants' perspective, the researcher studies the subjective experience and psychological course of the surfers. First by using “holistic-content” approach with time-line, to understand each individual's life experience and meaning-making. And then uses “categorical-content” data analysis, showing the overall results of the five participants in meaning making. The results of this study are divided into the following aspects, including the life experience of surfers, the self-awareness of surfers from surfing, the surfers' meaning making through surfing, and the discussion on other specific issues. First, in the life experience, the three common themes for the participants are the influence and transformation of their own experience and the desire to return to nature after urban life, and the surfing as a placebo for work and life. Second, the core view of surfers' self-awareness from surfing is divided into the consciousness transformation, the flow experience to happiness, and the spiritual experience and the integration of nature. Third, the surfers' meaning making through surfing uses "categorical- content" analysis, which concludes six major categories, including the flow experience through adventure, the building of the personal value, the pursuit of self-actualization and peak experience, the life precipitation of wildness solo, the metaphorical transfer in life, and the positive view of life after perceived risk. Fourth, the discussion of the specific issues presents two other phenomena. One is the practice of attitudinal value, and the other is the stereotype of the gender framework. This study contributed and provided a qualitative study of surfers in adventure activities; and explores the implications as a deep motivation to participate in adventure activities. The study suggested that further discussion in adventure activities in the spiritual experience and death fear in the adventure. It also suggested that focusing on different group in diversified adventure activities. The research may explore their sense of meaning through various outdoor activities by using narrative research. Hopefully, the model of meaning making for people engage outdoor activities will be successfully practiced for quantitative research in the future.
