Abstract:
Supervisor and subordinate competence and role stress were ex amined as explanatory variables of the vertical exchange within supervisor/subordinate dyads. Three hypotheses were proposed to examine these linkages: (1) subordinate competence is directly related to the vertical exchange between supervisors and subordi nates; (2) this competence/exchange relationship is moderated by the role stress experienced by the parties; and (3) the subordinate competence/exchange relationship is moderated by the supervisor's competence. These hypotheses were tested using a heterogeneous sample of (626) supervisor-subordinate dyads within social service organizations. Multiple hierarchical regression that included inter action terms supported the first and third hypotheses. As subordi nate competence increased, the vertical exchange reported increased. The results also demonstrated that congruence between supervisor/ subordinate competence resulted in higher level exchanges than did incongruence in competence levels.

Abstract:
The landscape of postsecondary education is changing in a variety of ways that present challenges and opportunities to educators, policymakers, and other stakeholders of higher education. One of the most significant areas of postsecondary educational change is in the community and technical college setting. The missions of both these institutional settings have changed to meet new technological demands, global economic competition, and societal issues. A consequence of mission change has been significant changes in the manner that instruction of technical education is conducted at these institutions. This case study explores automotive technology instructors' experiences and perceptions of changes in their curriculum in the newly created Louisiana Community and Technical College System. The study uses a case study qualitative methodology with individual interviews of a purposive sample population of automotive instructors at Louisiana Technical College. The study revealed three significant issues impacting the instructors' experiences and perceptions of curriculum change in their automotive technology program. One issue was the manner in which instructional delivery had changed by structure, course length and scheduling, and lab work. A second issue was the availability of appropriate instructional resources that included educational technology and training equipment. The third issue was the impact of industry standards and expectations on curriculum change in the instructors' programs. Recommendations are offered for policymakers, educators, and further research.

Abstract:
The stake is to study the modalities of native speakers' intervention, the help which they bring, the way they proceed to help the learners to complete their learning program. We also study the possibility of bringing in them at a distance by experimenting a device of conversation between native and not native speakers in video conference. The analysis of these exolingual conversations is situated between the interactive analysis; and of the interactional linguistics. From a methodological point of view this thesis leans on a qualitative approach and favors the use of the semi-directive interview and the analysis of exolingual conversations, the corpus consists of two conversations with designers of devices, and ten conversations between natives and nonnatives speakers in video conference. We analyze some linguistic aspects such as: the management of the themes; the management of the interaction, the negotiation of sense; and didactic aspects such as, the learning strategies and the roles of the native speaker: linguistic and cultural informant and communication partner. In our context of self-directed learning, the remote conversations between native and nonnative speakers are mainly introduced by the nonnative speakers. The conversations countain several moments of meaning negotiation, reformulations, and requests of clarification which allow the nonnative speakers to learn. These moments also allow the native speakers to play their roles by using either the verbal language or the non verbal language. The results of the experiment allow to notice that the video conference presents no inconvenience to the realization of conversations aimed at language learning in self-directed learning context

Abstract:

Lestringant, Pierre. Thesis, Rennes 1, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017REN1S067/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is about the design of automatic or semi-automatic methods to detect and identify cryptographic algorithms inside programs compiled into machine code. Two methods are presented. The objective of the first method is to identify cryptographic primitives. A machine code implementation of a cryptographic primitive, regarded as a sequence of instructions, is represented by a graph structure. During a normalization phase, a set of rewrite rules is used to modify this graph representation while preserving a specific notion of semantics. The goal is to converge towards expressions which are shared across several implementations of the same primitive. We use these expressions as a basis to create efficient signatures. A subgraph isomorphism enumeration algorithm is used to search for signatures. The second method is built on top of the first one. It produces a synthetic representation designed to help in the identification of modes of operation. This synthetic representation is defined as the smallest subgraph which preserve distances between sets of vertices previously identified as the input and output parameters of the primitives involved within the mode of operation

Chowdhury, Farida. "Structured peer-to-peer overlays for NATed churn intensive networks." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/23038.

Full text
Abstract:
The wide-spread coverage and ubiquitous presence of mobile networks has propelled the usage and adoption of mobile phones to an unprecedented level around the globe. The computing capabilities of these mobile phones have improved considerably, supporting a vast range of third party applications. Simultaneously, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) overlay networks have experienced a tremendous growth in terms of usage as well as popularity in recent years particularly in fixed wired networks. In particular, Distributed Hash Table (DHT) based Structured P2P overlay networks offer major advantages to users of mobile devices and networks such as scalable, fault tolerant and self-managing infrastructure which does not exhibit single points of failure. Integrating P2P overlays on the mobile network seems a logical progression; considering the popularities of both technologies. However, it imposes several challenges that need to be handled, such as the limited hardware capabilities of mobile phones and churn (i.e. the frequent join and leave of nodes within a network) intensive mobile networks offering limited yet expensive bandwidth availability. This thesis investigates the feasibility of extending P2P to mobile networks so that users can take advantage of both these technologies: P2P and mobile networks. This thesis utilises OverSim, a P2P simulator, to experiment with the performance of various P2P overlays, considering high churn and bandwidth consumption which are the two most crucial constraints of mobile networks. The experiment results show that Kademlia and EpiChord are the two most appropriate P2P overlays that could be implemented in mobile networks. Furthermore, Network Address Translation (NAT) is a major barrier to the adoption of P2P overlays in mobile networks. Integrating NAT traversal approaches with P2P overlays is a crucial step for P2P overlays to operate successfully on mobile networks. This thesis presents a general approach of NAT traversal for ring based overlays without the use of a single dedicated server which is then implemented in OverSim. Several experiments have been performed under NATs to determine the suitability of the chosen P2P overlays under NATed environments. The results show that the performance of these overlays is comparable in terms of successful lookups in both NATed and non-NATed environments; with Kademlia and EpiChord exhibiting the best performance. The presence of NATs and also the level of churn in a network influence the routing techniques used in P2P overlays. Recursive routing is more resilient to IP connectivity restrictions posed by NATs but not very robust in high churn environments, whereas iterative routing is more suitable to high churn networks, but difficult to use in NATed environments. Kademlia supports both these routing schemes whereas EpiChord only supports the iterating routing. This undermines the usefulness of EpiChord in NATed environments. In order to harness the advantages of both routing schemes, this thesis presents an adaptive routing scheme, called Churn Aware Routing Protocol (ChARP), combining recursive and iterative lookups where nodes can switch between recursive and iterative routing depending on their lifetimes. The proposed approach has been implemented in OverSim and several experiments have been carried out. The experiment results indicate an improved performance which in turn validates the applicability and suitability of ChARP in NATed environments.

Abstract:
The study we present here the results has for object the non-native student face up to oral comprehension and taking notes challenges during lectures in law. This study is part of the axis II section of Adis-language laboratory ICAR II. The study is based on the assumption that the complexity of the functioning or of lectures in law leads to difficulties in listening and note-taking in non-native students who have an uncertain command of French. The data from which we have worked consist of excerpts from videotapes of law courses. We analyzed these recordings according to theoretical presuppositions of the French school of discourse analysis. Several other concepts developed by other schools and other researchers have been used tools for understanding the functioning of the lectures. We were also informed by extensive studies on the lectures conducted in the group Interactions and Language Learning in its component Analysis of didactic speeches. We used the model of listening to lectures theorized by this research group to define the term listening. This model allowed us to identify and label the different complexity parameters of lectures. To measure oral comprehension of these parameters, we adopted an experimental approach. We have developed an experimental design not as sophisticated as required by the experimental method itself, for heuristic reasons. The experimental protocol is based on a set of excerpts of recordings from which we offered to native students and nonnative students listening tests through taking notes and other written and oral questions. The results reveal cases of language proficiency and delicate moments where for various reasons, listening and taking notes are complicated. These results validate the starting hypothesis. We have sketched from here a compensatory mechanism of identified problems, and then we have made perspective for further studies in the future

Abstract:
In a current context of reducing energy consumption, it is necessary in many industrial fields to develop new materials such as multi-compound metal alloys. Their characterization in a purely experimental way quickly becomes impossible to realize, digital simulation tools become unavoidable. As such, the CALPHAD (Calculation of Phase Diagram) approach is the most appropriate numerical tool for thermodynamic processing of multi-constituent systems. This is a semi-empirical method for describing the Gibbs energies of the phases of a system by mathematical functions by adjusting certain parameters from a set of information relating to the equilibrium phase or the thermodynamic and structural properties. Based on the sublattice model, Compound Energy Formalism (CEF) is widely used in CALPHAD modeling to describe Gibbs energy of phases that have multiple sublattices. The work presented in this dissertation is a contribution to the development of a New Approach to Compound Energy Formalism (NACEF) that aims to increase its potential. In this thesis, the new NACEF approach is presented in the case of multi-subnet binary phases with anti-site defects. We applied NACEF in the modeling of 2 binary systems in order to demonstrate its potential and in particular its ability to make model simplifications compatible. This is the Fe-Nb system in which the Laves C14 phase has been described by the 3-sublattice model and the Co-Cr system where the σ phase has been modeled with 5 sublattices. In the last chapter, we propose an extrapolation method based on NACEF which allows to obtain an estimate of the energies of the ordered configurations of a multi-constituted phase from those of the binary configurations. The results obtained on many systems in the case of the C14 and σ phases indicate a strong correlation between the extrapolated values and those obtained by DFT

Abstract:
For the performance measure approach (PMA) of RBDO, a transformation between the input random variables and the standard normal random variables is necessary to carry out the inverse reliability analysis. For reliability analysis, Rosenblatt and Nataf transformations are commonly used. In many industrial RBDO problems, the input random variables are correlated. However, often only limited information such as the marginal distribution and covariance could be practically obtained, and the input joint probability distribution function (PDF) is very difficult to obtain. Thus, in literature, most RBDO methods assume all input random variables are independent. However, in this paper, it is found that the RBDO results can be significantly different when the input variables are correlated. Thus, various transformation methods are investigated for development of a RBDO method for problems with correlated input variables. It is found that Rosenblatt transformation is impractical for problems with correlated input variables due to difficulty of constructing a joint PDF from the marginal distributions and covariance. On the other hand, Nataf transformation can construct the joint CDF using the marginal distributions and covariance, and thus applicable to problems with correlated random input variables. The joint CDF is Nataf model, which is called a Gaussian copula in the copula family. Since the Gaussian copula can describe a wide range of the correlation coefficient, Nataf transformation can be widely used for various types of correlated input variables. In this paper, Nataf transformation is used to develop a RBDO method for design problems with correlated random input variables. Numerical examples are used to demonstrate the proposed method. Also, it is shown that the correlated random input variables significantly affect the RBDO results.

Abstract:
Rackwitz-Fiessler method and Nataf-Pearson method are two most widely used random space transformation methods. However, unlike Nataf-Pearson method, Rackwtitz-Fissler method is always used when random variables are independent due to its difficulties of accounting for dependency variation. So in present article, we discussed the transformation ways and linear correlation variations of these two methods. And found that the same isoprobabilitic transformation principle was followed by the forward transformation of Rackwitz-Fiessler method like that of the Nataf-Pearson method, so the same Pearson linear correlation matrix should also be possessed by the transformed random vector after the Rackwitz-Fiessler method. In addition, the backward transformations, algorithm realizations, computation cost and efficiency were also discussed between these two methods. Finally, combined with standard Hasofer-Lind FORM method, we presented two numerical examples to illustrate the actual differences and similarities of these two transformation methods in their reliability applications.
