Abstract:
AbstractFreeform curves are commonly used in contemporary design practices, especially with digital modeling tools. We investigate facilitating shape subtraction and addition with two-dimensional (planar) non-uniform rational basis-spline (NURB) curves with the codes and conventions of modeling while preserving the visual continuity of curved shapes. Our proposed tool, developed in a common digital modeling environment, automates the adjustment of parameters for tangential continuity of curves in shape rule applications. When the user designates a curve range to subtract from an initial shape and provides a new curved shape to add to it, the tool splits the initial shape, scales and aligns the curve to be added to fit into this range, introduces additional control points at the joining ends of the new curve to preserve continuity and redraws the new curve. We present a sample set of design variations produced using this practical approach which can be utilized as a method or become part of an automated NURB curve manipulation tool for designers.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Chromatin boundaries facilitate independent gene regulation by insulating genes from the effects of enhancers or organized chromatin. However, the mechanisms of boundary action are not well understood. To investigate whether boundary function depends on a higher order of chromatin organization, we examined the function of several Drosophila melanogaster insulators in cells with reduced chromatin-remodeling activities. We found that knockdown of NURF301 and ISWI, key components of the nucleosome-remodeling factor (NURF), synergistically disrupted the enhancer-blocking function of Fab7 and SF1 and augmented the function of Fab8. Mutations in Nurf301/Ebx and Iswi also affected the function of these boundaries in vivo. We further show that ISWI was localized on the endogenous Fab7 and Fab8 insulators and that NURF knockdown resulted in a marked increase in the nucleosome occupancy at these insulator sites. In contrast to the effect of NURF knockdown, reduction in dMi-2, the ATPase component of the Drosophila nucleosome-remodeling and deacetylation (NuRD) complex, augmented Fab7 and suppressed Fab8. Our results provide the first evidence that higher-order chromatin organization influences the enhancer-blocking activity of chromatin boundaries. In particular, the NURF and NuRD nucleosome-remodeling complexes may regulate Hox expression by modulating the function of boundaries in these complexes. The unique responses by different classes of boundaries to changes in the chromatin environment may be indicative of their distinct mechanisms of action, which may influence their placement in the genome and selection during evolution.

Abstract:
Radiostereometric analysis (RSA) is a method used for determining migration and wear of orthopaedic implants through measurements performed in radiographs. There are two approaches of RSA: marker-based and model-based (MBRSA). Marker-based RSA is the conventional and most accurate method. However, it requires markers to be inserted or attached to the implants. MBRSA avoids using markers by employing 3D geometric models of the implants. State-of-the-art methods for model-based RSA use either elementary geometric shapes (EGS) or triangulated surface (TS) models. EGS models are smooth but not generic. They can only model implants that have simple canonical shapes. In contrast, TS models are generic but not smooth. They can model both basic and free-form shapes but not as smooth as EGS models. The degree of smoothness depends on the number of triangles used. In this thesis, we introduce Non-uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) models that are both generic and smooth. Two algorithms were developed: 1) A fitting algorithm that fits multi-patch NURBS models to unorganized point clouds representing the surface of the implants. 2) An RSA algorithm that fits the NURBS models to points measured in radiographs. To evaluate the algorithms, NURBS models of a femoral head and an acetabular component were generated by the fitting algorithm. The femoral head penetration into the acetabular component was computed by the NURBS-based RSA algorithm using clinical double examinations for a single hip replacement patient. The precision of the NURBS-based RSA algorithm for computing the femoral head penetrationis comparable to the reported precision of a state-of-the-art EGS based RSA algorithm for solving the same problem. This result suggests that NURBS models can be a good alternative to the current models used in MBRSA.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Boundary representation (B-rep), intersection, and evaluation schemes for NURB based non-manifold CSG objects are presented. The B-rep scheme follows a top-down, face-based approach. A definition of non-manifold objects and their set operations are given. The boundary evaluation process follows the intersect-merge-select strategy of Weiler (Weiler 1986). The generation of intersection geometry is performed in a bottom-up strategy. Intersection algorithms between entities of same and different dimensions are studied. The computation of face/face intersection is based on the concept of the marching method (Barnhill et al 1987; Barnhill & Kersey 1990). Several techniques have been developed to enhance the marching process, including the computation of initial points and tracing step sizes, control of intersection precision, and handling of branch points and tangential intersection curves (points). Inconsistency of the intersection results is corrected using criteria based on topological adjacency information. The proposed method finds all internal loops without performing loop detection (Hohmeyer 1991). New topological entities corresponding to the intersection results are created in the parameter space for each entity. These include vertices, edges and faces, but not 3D shells. The creation of topological faces is carried out by generating the boundary of each new face while traverse a net structure created during the intersection geometry generation process. Subsequent classification and selection are performed based on 2D topological entities, instead of 3D shells. The proposed methods has been implemented as the core of a NURB-based non-manifold modeling system.

Abstract:
Capturing the in-process workpiece geometry generated during machining is an important part of tool path verification and increasingly the physics-based simulation of cutting forces used in Virtual Machining. Swept volume generation is a key supporting methodology that is necessary for generating these in-process states. Hole milling is representative of one class of milling operation where the swept volume is continuously intersecting. Due to this it is impossible to decompose the tool path into non-intersecting regions which is typically the approach used in solid model based swept volume generation. In this paper an approach to generating NURBS based solid models for self-intersecting swept volumes generated during hole milling is presented. NURB surfaces are generated that compactly represent the surfaces of the swept volume. This utilizes the geometry of the helical curve as opposed to a linearly interpolated tool path that is used for more generic approaches to generating swept volumes. Examples applying the approach to various types of cutter geometries used in milling are presented.

Abstract:
Abstract Sculptured surfaces often appear in mechanical parts of various industrial products as external form or the functional surface and are commonly found in molds and dies. In this study a sculptured surface is defined by a Non-Uniform Rational B-spline (NURB) surface that provides the flexibility and freedom for surface description. The work proposed here includes the evaluation of machining information, decision for machining process sequence selection, automatic cutter selection, and cutter path generation. Machining information is first evaluated by using series of hunting planes, calculating the geometric shape and constraints of the machining cavity. A decision on the process sequence is made based on the evaluated machining information. The cutter size is automatically determined by considering geometric constraints, the maximum material removal rate in roughing process and the minimum cutter movement with the required accuracy in finishing process. The roughing process is done by some pocketing procedures that consider arbitrary shaped pockets with islands on the cutting planes. Cutter movement and cutter selection are optimized by considering machining conditions on adjacent cutting planes. An integrated system called CASCAM has been developed to prove the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Abstract:
A microwave tip clearance sensor capable of measuring the hottest stages of industrial and aero gas turbines has been developed. This new microwave sensor has been integrated into a commercial package for online real-time monitoring of machine data. However, data analysis of large numbers of tip clearance probes makes standard industry graphic techniques cluttered. A method has been developed to reduce this data and visualize it in order to provide intuitive representations of the data from which a user can quickly draw the right conclusions about machine behavior. The main motivation for the development of a 3D graphical user interface is the density of information that can be shown to the user at one time. Tip clearance measurement is very data-rich, as every individual blade for each sensor mounted around the engine case is available. The result is that it may be difficult to find slight changes within hundreds of clearance trends. Only specialists with long experience in tip clearance measurement can synthesize all the data quickly enough using standard 2D plots. The 3D graphical user interface brings all of this data together to calculate the aggregated blade pattern, rotor positioning, and estimated case shape. All of these measurements are available to the user in a single visualization. Colors indicating alarm or clearance scale quickly draw attention to the most important data such as the minimum clearance point around the engine case where a rub may be likely to occur. This method is based about a case shape fitting algorithm that combines data from multiple sensors to make a case shape estimate based on fitting of a non-uniform rational B-spline (NURB). The scaling is also distorted in order to accentuate the graphics in a way that provides an intuitive understanding of the machine state. The method of applying this data accentuation is important so as to not be misleading. This innovative navigation interface presented in this paper capitalizes on modern advances in computer graphics to aid engineers and operators in understanding, access, monitoring, and analysis of tip clearance and air-gap measurements.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper develops a new free-form model, called c-NURBS, which is a general model of NURBS. A c-NURBS curve or surface is the projection of a 6D B-spline curve from a 6D homogeneous space H6 into a 3D space R3. The construction procedure of a c-NURBS curve or surface is that using cubic curves or bicubic patches repeatedly and piecewisely interpolates the given control points. The distinct properties of c-NURBS include independent weight modification, super-convexity, strong c-convex hull, and hidden degrees and control points. These properties greatly enhance the shape control and modification capability. All techniques developed for NURBS, such as the de Boor-Cox algorithm, knot insertion, and degree elevation and reduction, can be applied to c-NURBS. The implementation of c-NURBS requires little improvement on the CAD/CAM systems based on NURBS.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper develops c-NURBS surfaces and c-Bezier triangles. The projection from 6D homogenous space to 3D vector space developed in previous papers [12, 13] is applied to surfaces. As a result, a c-NURBS surface can be constructed using bicubic patches to interpolate the given control points with the de Boor-Cox algorithm. Based on this, c-NURBS surfaces have the properties of independent weight modification, super-convexity, strong c-convex hull, and hidden degrees and control points. A c-Bezier triangle can be constructed using cubic patches to interpolate the given control points with the de Casteljau algorithm. Based on this, the c-Bezier triangle has the properties of independent weight modification, super-convexity, and hidden degrees and control points. These properties provide great convenience for shape control and modification operations.
