Abstract:
The rate of data growth outpaces the decline of hardware costs, and there has been an ever-increasing demand in reducing the storage and network overhead for online database management systems (DBMSs). The most widely used approach for data reduction in DBMSs is blocklevel compression. Although this method is simple and effective, it fails to address redundancy across blocks and therefore leaves significant room for improvement for many applications. This dissertation proposes a systematic approach, termed similaritybased deduplication, which reduces the amount of data stored on disk and transmitted over the network beyond the benefits provided by traditional compression schemes. To demonstrate the approach, we designed and implemented dbDedup, a lightweight record-level similaritybased deduplication engine for online DBMSs. The design of dbDedup exploits key observations we find in database workloads, including small item sizes, temporal locality, and the incremental nature of record updates. The proposed approach differs from traditional chunk-based deduplication approaches in that, instead of finding identical chunks anywhere else in the data corpus, similarity-based deduplication identifies a single similar data-item and performs differential compression to remove the redundant parts for greater savings. To achieve high efficiency, dbDedup introduces novel encoding, caching and similarity selection techniques that significantly mitigate the deduplication overhead with minimal loss of compression ratio. For evaluation, we integrated dbDedup into the storage and replication components of a distributed NoSQL DBMS and analyzed its properties using four real datasets. Our results show that dbDedup achieves up to 37⇥ reduction in the storage size and replication traffic of the database on its own and up to 61⇥ reduction when paired with the DBMS’s block-level compression. dbDedup provides both benefits with negligible effect on DBMS throughput or client latency (average and tail).

Abstract:
In aviation, synthetic vision systems render artificial views of the world (using a database of the world and pose information) to support navigation and situational awareness in low visibility conditions. The database needs to be periodically updated to ensure its consistency with reality, since it reflects at best a nominal state of the environment. This thesis presents an approach for automatically updating the geometry of synthetic vision system databases and 3D models in general. The approach is novel in that it profits from all of the available prior information: intrinsic/extrinsic camera parameters and geometry of the world. Geometric inconsistencies (or anomalies) between the model and reality are quickly localized; this localization serves to significantly reduce the complexity of the updating problem. Given a geometric model of the world, a sample image and known camera motion, a predicted image can be generated based on a differential approach. Model locations where predictions do not match observations are assumed to be incorrect. The updating is then cast as an optimization problem where differences between observations and predictions are minimized. To cope with system uncertainties, a mechanism that automatically infers their impact on prediction validity is derived. This method not only renders the anomaly detection process robust but also prevents the overfitting of the data. The updating framework is examined at first using synthetic data and further tested in both a laboratory environment and using a helicopter in flight. Experimental results show that the algorithm is effective and robust across different operating conditions.

Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence Lab, Department of MIS, University of Arizona
A major problem that decision makers are facing in an information-rich society is how to absorb, filter and make effective use of available data. The problem caused by information overflow could lead to the losses of competitiveness. This paper presents a knowledge-based approach to building an issues identifier to help investors overcome information overflow problems when dealing with very large on-line financial databases. The proposed software system is able to extract critical issues from the on-line financial databases. The system was developed based on a number of techniques: automatic indexing, concept space genemtion, and neural network classification. In this paper, we describe how these techniques are used to extract subject descriptors, their semantic relationships, and the related texts (documents or paragraphs) to each descriptor. The proposed system has been tested with the annual reports from thirteen of the largest international banks.

Abstract:
As a result of the rapid evolution of smart mobile devices and the wide application of satellite-based positioning devices, the moving object database (MOD) has become a hot research topic in recent years. The moving objects generate a large amount of geo-referenced data in different types, such as videos, audios, images and sensor logs. In order to better analyze and utilize the data, it is useful and necessary to visualize the data on a map. With the rise of web mapping, visualizing the moving object and geo-referenced data has never been so easy. While displaying the trajectory of a moving object is a mature technology, there is little research on visualizing both the location and data of the moving objects in a synchronized manner. This dissertation proposes a general moving object visualization model to address the above problem. This model divides the spatial data visualization systems into four categories. Another contribution of this dissertation is to provide a framework, which deals with all these visualization tasks with synchronization control in mind. This platform relies on the TerraFly web mapping system. To evaluate the universality and effectiveness of the proposed framework, this dissertation presents four visualization systems to deal with a variety of situations and different data types.

Abstract:
The internet is fundamentally a large storage unit for immense amounts of data. Consequently, the majority of online users log on to the internet in order to find information. Innovations in technology continue to make both the production and consumption of this information an easily achieved endeavor, resulting in high expectations for instantaneous answers via immediate search results. While a plethora of information is not difficult to find, knowing what to do with that information is often problematic. To turn information into knowledge requires an ability to contextualize it and critically engage with it. WebMD is a highly recognizable health information database that often runs into information overload problems with its users. This thesis will examine the information that the WebMD website provides, as well as its usability. The goal is to investigate, firstly, the importance of context for knowledge-forming when users perform online information research and, secondly, the critical literacy required to use such information.

Abstract:
The rapid adoption of Internet and web technologies has created an opportunity for making music collaboratively by sharing information online. However, current applications for online music making do not take advantage of the potential of shared information. The goal of this dissertation is to provide and evaluate algorithms and representations for interacting with large audio databases that facilitate music creation by online communities. This work has been developed in the context of Freesound, a large-scale, community-driven database of audio recordings shared under Creative Commons (CC) licenses. The diversity of sounds available through this kind of platform is unprecedented. At the same time, the unstructured nature of community-driven processes poses new challenges for indexing and retrieving information to support musical creativity. In this dissertation we propose and evaluate algorithms and representations for dealing with the main elements required by online music making applications based on large-scale audio databases: sound files, including time-varying and aggregate representations, taxonomies for retrieving sounds, music representations and community models. As a generic low-level representation for audio signals, we analyze the framework of cepstral coefficients, evaluating their performance with example classification tasks. We found that switching to more recent auditory filter such as gammatone filters improves, at large scales, on traditional representations based on the mel scale. We then consider common types of sounds for obtaining aggregated representations. We show that several time series analysis features computed from the cepstral coefficients complement traditional statistics for improved performance. For interacting with large databases of sounds, we propose a novel unsupervised algorithm that automatically generates taxonomical organizations based on the low-level signal representations. Based on user studies, we show that our approach can be used in place of traditional supervised classification approaches for providing a lexicon of acoustic categories suitable for creative applications. Next, a computational representation is described for music based on audio samples. We demonstrate through a user experiment that it facilitates collaborative creation and supports computational analysis using the lexicons generated by sound taxonomies. Finally, we deal with representation and analysis of user communities. We propose a method for measuring collective creativity in audio sharing. By analyzing the activity of the Freesound community over a period of more than 5 years, we show that the proposed creativity measures can be significantly related to social structure characterized by network analysis.
In the context of research involving the theme of virtual entertainment, little attention has been addressing the quality of information on specific vehicles, particularly in relation to senior public, arousing the attention of this study. Therefore, this qualitative study aimed to produce a database, through links to information about the cultural content of leisure in this case for the elderly, and the development and implementation of the Usability Evaluation of Recreation Sites Inventory (IAUSLA-21 +). The instrument was divided into two parts, the first referring to the characterization of the sample, and the second consisting of a Likert type scale, graduated in 5 points. The instrument was administered to an intentional sample of 60 subjects of both sexes over 60 years, familiar with computer use and that were willing to participate in the study, belonging to the Digital Inclusion Programs, at Rio Claro-SP and Sao Paulo-SP cities. Data from the application of the instruments were descriptively analyzed through the use of Thematic Content Analysis Technique and numerically illustrated by percentage. The results indicated that the built database met the objectives of the study, indicating good usability, but updates should be held whenever necessary. Therefore, it is suggested that new possibilities could be offered to the elderly, including those relating to leisure field, to broaden the perspectives of experiences facing the new technologies

Prior research studies and third-party reports of fraud show rates substantially higher than eBay’s reported negative feedback rate of less than 1%. The conclusion is most buyers are withholding reports of negative feedback. Researchers Nikitov and Stone in a forensic case study of a single opportunistic eBay seller found buyers sometimes embedded negative comments in positive feedback as a means of avoiding retaliation from sellers and damage to their reputation. This category of positive feedback was described as “negative-positive” feedback. An example of negative-positive type feedback is “Good product, but slow shipping.” This research study investigated the concept of using negative-positive type feedback as a signature to identify potential opportunistic sellers in an online auction population. As experienced by prior researchers using data extracted from the eBay web site, the magnitude of data to be analyzed in the proposed study was massive. The nature of the analysis required - judgment of seller behavior and contextual analysis of buyer feedback comments – could not be automated. The traditional method of using multiple dedicated human raters would have taken months of labor with a correspondingly high labor cost. Instead, crowdsourcing in the form of Amazon Mechanical Turk was used to reduce the analysis time to a few days and at a fraction of the traditional labor cost. The research’s results found that the presence of subtle buyer behavior in the form of negative-positive type feedback comments are an inter-buyer signal indicating that a seller was behaving fraudulently. Sellers with negative-positive type feedback were 1.82 times more likely to be fraudulent. A correlation exists between an increasing number of negative-positive type feedback comments and an increasing probability that a seller was acting fraudulently. For every one unit increase in the number of negative-positive type feedback comments a seller was 4% more likely to be fraudulent.

Abstract:
When students write research papers they use a variety of sources in their paper. These sources range from web pages to research articles. The purpose of this study was to decide whether or not undergraduate students would choose to use scholarly or non-scholarly sources when presented with both types of sources in a set of search results. Twenty Duke University students were recruited for the study. They were given a research topic and asked to perform a search. Both the search results and interface were fabricated by the researcher in order to control the experimental environment. The students were asked to rate the sources found in the results, choose four sources to use for their research scenario, and finally, were asked to explain reasoning behind their choices. The findings concluded that the students in this study were more likely to choose scholarly sources over non-scholarly sources and give these scholarly sources higher ratings.

Abstract:
This study evaluates the content coverage of Google Scholar and three commercial databases (Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Bibliography of the History of Art and Art Full Text/Art Index Retrospective) on the subject of art history. Each database is tested using a bibliography method and evaluated based on Péter Jacsó’s scope criteria for online databases. Of the 472 articles tested, Google Scholar indexed the smallest number of citations (35%), outshone by the Arts & Humanities Citation Index which covered 73% of the test set. This content evaluation also examines specific aspects of coverage to find that in comparison to the other databases, Google Scholar provides consistent coverage over the time range tested (1975-2008) and considerable access to article abstracts (56%). Google Scholar failed, however, to fully index the most frequently cited art periodical in the test set, the Artforum International. Finally, Google Scholar’s total citation count is inflated by a significant percentage (23%) of articles which include duplicate, triplicate or multiple versions of the same record.

Abstract:
This study reports changes in online database searching at North Texas State University when equipment speed was increased. Data were from database vendor invoices and price and sale data of online equipment. The hypotheses examined the relationship between the decrease in the cost of online equipment and the change to faster online equipment and the change in the number of databases that changed for online types. The change in equipment was related to changes in the number of offline prints per hour, the average time per search, the average number of descriptors per search, the number of searches per month, and the rank order of database use over the studied period. The increase in the number of databases with billed types was related to the number of online billed types produced. The number of prints was related to the number of billed types. Time spent online was examined for annual seasonal cycles. The major statistical tool was time-series analysis, although other methods were applied.

Orientador: Gisele Maria Schwartz
Banca: Jossett Campagna
Banca: Afonso Antonio Machado
Mestre

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to collect and examine statistical and survey data in an effort to determine whether three electronic resources made available by the Hartnell College library are actually being used by the target population for whom they were acquired. The second goal was to significantly advance understanding of how selected online database products collect and report usage statistics, how usable students find existing electronic resources, and whether usage levels justify the costs of renewing online resource subscriptions. The major problems examined within the study include a lack of common measurement standards and the absence of a universally agreed upon definition of what constitutes usage. Additional problems included a lack of comparative data to evaluate similar electronic resources and the absence of any prior analysis of database use at Hartnell College. Data for this study was obtained from two sources: server log files and user surveys. Each month, log files containing electronic resource usage statistics were downloaded, analyzed and stored in spreadsheets by the Hartnell College Systems Librarian. This information was supplemented by data collected during a usability study and user satisfaction study conducted in spring 2002. Test participants were drawn from two Hartnell College classes: one section of English 253 and one section of English 10l. There was a total of 25 participants. Findings from the completed study indicated EBSCOhost and Pro Quest databases were used more than CQ Researcher, with EBSCOhost receiving the most use. Despite this finding, usability and user satisfaction surveys indicated that students participating in this study found CQ Researcher the most effective tool in helping them perform directed research. Students also rated CQ Researcher highest in user satisfaction, followed by EBSCOhost and then ProQuest. The factual statistical data derived from this study will assist decision-makers at Hartnell College as they prepare the 2003-2004 Library materials budget. An awareness of usability and user satisfaction ratings of existing electronic resources by students have resulted in planned revisions to existing bibliographic instruction courses.

Abstract:
Foram identificadas 5 mutações: 3 no gene VHL (c.74C>T, p.Pro25Leu; c.154G>T, p.Glu52*; c.241C>T, p.Pro81Ser), 1 no gene EGLN1 (c.1216G>C, p.Gly406Arg) e 1 no gene HBB (Hb San Diego [HBB: c.328G>A, p.Val110Met]).
Congenital Erythrocytosis (CE) belongs to a diseases group that can be primary or secondary, and are classified based on EPO levels. Primary CE, due to mutations in the erythroid precursors, is caused by changes in EPO receptor (EpoR) due to mutations in EPOR and SH2B3 genes. EpoR is permanently activated, which leads to a decrease in EPO levels. Secondary CE can be caused by defects in the components of the oxygen-sensing pathway, namely mutations in VHL, EGLN1 and EPAS1, or due to congenital defects such as Hbs with increased oxygen affinity, due to mutations in the HBB, HBA or BPGM. Mutations in these genes leads to an increase of EPO levels. Despite important discoveries in the molecular pathogenesis of CE, in about 70% of the patients the genetic causes remain to be identified. In this study were analysed 125 samples of individuals with suspicious of CE, followed in Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra or from other Portuguese/international hospitals. Laboratory testing was guided by clinical and familiarhistory and EPO levels, and included: EPOR, SH2B3, VHL, EGLN1, EPAS1, HBA, HBB, BPGM sequencing. Were identified 5 mutations: 3 in VHL gene (c.74C>T, p.Pro25Leu; c.154G>T, p.Glu52*; c.241C>T, p.Pro81Ser), 1 in EGLN1 gene (c.1216G>C, p.Gly406Arg) and 1 in HBB gene (Hb San Diego [HBB: c.328G>A, p.Val110Met]). Mutations in VHL gene have an autosomal recessive inheritance, with sporadic cases in which only one mutation is found, also in this study all the mutations found are in heterozygosity. The underlying mechanism in these cases still remains to be elucidated. The mutation found in the EGLN1 gene is not described in the literature, according to in silico analysis it is a pathogenic variant and should therefore be the cause of CE. In the HBB gene the variant was identified in an individual of Turkish origin, the first description of this variant in Turkey In conclusion, in this study was possible to identify the CE molecular aetiology in 5/125 patients studied. It was found 4 described mutations and 1 new mutation. However, 120 patients still remain without molecular diagnosis. This demonstrates that more studies are needed to understand this disease. The use of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology can be a valuable tool in the study of CE as it can identify other genes that may be involved in CE.

Wang, Lucinda W. "Implicit Measures and Online Risks." NSUWorks, 2015. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/72.

Full text
Abstract:
Information systems researchers typically use self-report measures, such as questionnaires to study consumers’ online risk perception. The self-report approach captures the conscious perception of online risk but not the unconscious perception that precedes and dominates human being’s decision-making. A theoretical model in which implicit risk perception precedes explicit risk evaluation is proposed. The research model proposes that implicit risk affects both explicit risk and the attitude towards online purchase. In a direct path, the implicit risk affects attitude towards purchase. In an indirect path, the implicit risk affects explicit risk, which in turn affects attitude towards purchase. The stimulus used was a questionable web site offering pre-paid credit card services. Data was collected from 150 undergraduate students enrolled in a university. Implicit risk was measured using methods developed in social psychology, namely, single category-implicit association test. Explicit risk and attitude towards purchase were measured using a well-known instrument in the e-commerce risk literature. Preliminary, unconditioned analysis suggested that (a) implicit risk does not affect explicit risk, (b) explicit risk does not affect attitude to purchase, and (c) implicit risk does not affect attitude towards purchase.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of affect on privacy concerns and privacy behaviors. A considerable amount of research in the information systems field argues that privacy concerns, usually conceptualized as an evaluation of privacy risks, influence privacy behaviors. However, recent theoretical work shows that affect, a pre-cognitive evaluation, has a significant effect on preferences and choices in risky situations. Affect is contrasted with cognitive issues in privacy decision making and the role of affective versus cognitive-consequentialist factors is reviewed in privacy context. A causal model was developed to address how affect influences privacy concerns and privacy behaviors. The model of privacy risk proposed in this model argues that affect (or “feelings”) influences privacy behaviors directly as well as thru privacy concerns. To test the model, subjects were recruited using Mechanical Turk and paid for their participation. Affect, the key construct in this research, was measured using a word association technique as well as methods developed in the implicit attitudes research. Well-known scales were used to measure privacy concerns and behavioral intentions. Data was collected from subjects using a pretested privacy scenario. Data analysis suggests that, in line with published IS research, privacy concerns affect privacy behaviors. Affect has no impact on privacy concerns nor on privacy behaviors at the traditional 5% level of significance, though it is significant at the 10% level of significance. Improving the instruments used to measure affect, use of a large sample size to detect small effect sizes and more control over the instrument administration instead of an online survey are suggested for future research.

Abstract:
Volunteer organizations face two challenges not found in non-volunteer organizations: recruiting and retaining volunteers. While social media use is increasing amongst individuals, its use and effectiveness for volunteer recruitment and retention by volunteer organizations is unknown. The dissertation reports the results of three studies to investigate this important question. Using a mixed-methods approach, it addressed the dual nature of social media and its effectiveness by including volunteer organizations and social media users. This dissertation found that although volunteer organizations are not using social media effectively, they could virtualize requirements of the recruitment process by focusing on relatable events instead of sterile marketing. This dissertation contributes to information systems literature by extending the post-acceptance model of IS continuance to show that social media mediates volunteer continuance. It further contributes by revealing a potential new area of research, i.e., the use and effectiveness of online social media for volunteer organizations.

Hood, William School of Information Library &amp Archive Studies UNSW. "An informetric study of the distribution of bibliographic records in online databases: a case study using the literature of Fuzzy Set Theory (1965-1993)." Awarded by:University of New South Wales. School of Information Library and Archive Studies, 1999. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/18184.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated the distribution of bibliographic records amongst online bibliographic databases. The topic of Fuzzy Set Theory over the period of 1965 to 1993 was chosen to provide the case study for this investigation. From the DIALOG database host, searches were conducted on 114 databases to determine the number of journal article records relating to the topic of Fuzzy Sets. Both the number of records in each database, as well as the overlap of coverage between the databases were calculated. Six counting techniques were developed to allocate records to databases based on different methods for handling records that were duplicated between databases. When duplicate records are included, the top database accounts for 19% of the records; when duplicates are removed, the top database was found to account for 37% of the records. The distribution of records in databases was found to conform to the Bradford-Zipf hyperbolic distribution. Various other analyses were undertaken including: the duplicate records themselves, the total size of the DIALOG database system over time and the density of Fuzzy Set records in databases over time. A secondary aim of this study was to perform an informetric study on the literature of Fuzzy Set Theory itself. Results obtained include an analysis of the growth of the Fuzzy Set literature, an analysis of the journals covering the topic of Fuzzy Sets, an analysis of the terminology used in describing topics related to Fuzzy Sets. Also, the Ulrich's database was used to provide a subject classification of the journals to analyse the diffusion of the topic of Fuzzy Sets into other disciplines. Apart from the discipline of mathematics, the top disciplines into which Fuzzy Sets have diffused were found to be applied physics, systems and computing. The third aim of the thesis was to refine and develop the methodology used to perform large scale informetric studies using data from a variety of online bibliographic databases. Commercially available software was used wherever possible, but where this was not possible or infeasible, custom written programs were developed to perform various steps in the methodology.

Abstract:
U.S. student enrollment in online classes in the higher education sector has grown rapidly since 2001. Researchers have found that student satisfaction often leads to higher student retention, yet more research was needed to understand reasons for student satisfaction with online education. The purpose of this nonexperimental study was to examine the relationship between students' early exposure to technology (i.e., before college) and their satisfaction with online education in college. The unified theory of acceptance and use of technology were the theoretical framework. A convenience sample of 103 participants from the population of online students at colleges and universities in the United States took a survey on their past exposure to information and communication technology (ICT); their expectations for, and willingness to continue using ICT; and their satisfaction with online education. Several statistical tests, such as ANOVA, Spearman Rho correlation, and t-tests were conducted to analyze collected responses. Results indicated there was an indirect relationship between the early exposure to technology and student satisfaction based on the statistically significant correlation found between the early exposure to technology and effort expectancy, then between effort expectancy and use behavior and finally between use behavior and student satisfaction. By implementing study findings, educators and managers may be better able to bring positive social changes necessary to prepare all students and workers for the technology-driven education and the workplace regardless of their socioeconomic status.

Hope, Sharon M. "Faculty Perceptions of Instructional Strategies that Foster Student Engagement in Online Courses." ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/3781.

Full text
Abstract:
Developing online instructional strategies for increasing student engagement and success is significant locally and nationally due to growth in the online field, advances in technology, and the need for colleges to maximize student success. This study stemmed from the desire of administrators at an upstate New York private college to discover additional ways to design and deliver effective online instruction. The purpose of this qualitative instrumental case study was to discover faculty perceptions of and experiences with instructional strategies that they used to foster student engagement in online learning. Kearsley and Shneiderman's engagement theory formed the study's conceptual framework. Ten faculty members, who had taught online for at least 3 years at the study site, completed an open-ended, anonymous online survey, provided documents for analysis, and participated in a semi-structured, one-on-one interview. Data analysis revealed five themes that add insight to the attributes of student engagement theory by discovering instructional strategies that foster interaction for online students: instructor presence, effective communication, course consistency, engaging content, and a humanizing learning environment. Using these findings, a position paper was written, which includes the recommendation that a new professional development initiative, a communities-of-practice e-learning site, be created to share study findings. Dissemination of study findings at conferences may increase online practitioners' knowledge of instructional strategies that engage online learners and improve student satisfaction and success, potentially resulting in positive social change.

Abstract:
Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) lag behind predominantly White institutions in their production of online courses and degree programs because of nonexistent or inadequate technology training for faculty members and limited financial resources. The purpose of this qualitative comparative case study was to obtain insight into how decisions are made on technology deployment and integration of online programs at HBCUs. Guided by Donaldson's contingency theory, this case study addressed how decisions are determined at HBCUs to integrate online learning programs into the curriculum and how the individuals who make these decisions perceive online learning programs. Survey responses were collected from 16 administrators, chief information officers, and faculty department heads at 3 HBCUs. Frequency data from the surveys led to themes were confirmed by the analysis of interviews and campus documents. Emergent themes included the integration of online programs, interest in online learning, incentives/compensation and release time, mission and goal statements, strategic plans, and professional development. All 3 HBCUs have a process in place for measuring progress and updating strategic plans. Only 1 HBCU had incentives to encourage faculty or administrators to participate in technology deployment, although all 3 HBCUs offered professional development courses and seminars. Online learning was not included in any of the 3 HBCUs' mission and goal statements. Faculty interest in teaching online courses was high at 2 of the HBCUs. Among the implications of these findings for research and practice was the possibility of promoting positive social change through developing and applying improved strategies for technology deployment at HBCUs that might provide better services to students.
