Full textThis thesis is dedicated to study a cultural contingency of the entrepreneurial intention-action. It uses empirical research which permits, through a triangulation method, to explore the role of national culture in these notions. A theoretical analysis of main concepts on entrepreneurship and national culture enables to suggest an adapted conceptual framework for studying cultural contingency on entrepreneurial intention. In fact, this framework proposes an approach that permits to integrate different analysis levels of national culture and their effects on the entrepreneurial intention formation. The thesis presents its problematic and methodological project, through interviews and questionnaires applied in 35 case studies of small business creators, coming from "Lorraine" region (France) and "Grand Tunis" region (Tunisia). The data treatment (quantitative and qualitative analysis) brings to adopt the cultural contingency of perceived desirability and feasibility to start a business. The research suggests that intention of business creation can't be considered as universal. On the other hand it can be surrounded according to specific cultural characteristics, particularly, cultural values and beliefs, relational context, motivations, entrepreneurs' roles models, etc. It defends also the imbrication's entrepreneurial and national cultures

Full textCommon enterprise evaluation business practices are mainly based on financial or accounting references. An actual firm value is estimated on previous results rather than a potentially future wealth. Furthermore, non financials assets, like team qualifications, could be used as well in order to increase a business value. The main thesis goal is to demonstrate a better way for evaluating small businesses value in using non financial assets indicators. The Delphi monographic method was used to demonstrate the relevance of these indicators for small enterprises (virtual firm, regional accounting company of about twenty employees). Results show that an initial estimate made by experts in using evaluation usual ways can be modified when using non financial assets indicators. Present ways for evaluate an enterprise are mainly based on financial or accounting references and the value is estimate with previous result rather than a potentially wealth to come. Non financials assets, like team qualifications, are enable used. The aim of is thesis is to show that using indicator which enable to value non financial assets for a small enterprise lead to a better way of evaluating. After un first selection, the relevance of these indicators was tested through a small enterprise in consulting (virtual firm, regional accounting company of about twenty employees was created for the experimentation). The chosen method, a monographic one, is based on Delphi method. The results show that the initial estimate, made by experts in evaluation using usual ways, can by modificated when we take non financial assets indicators

Full textThe increase of competitive pressure, partly linked to the single market achievement, and resulting internal and external constraints for small and medium firms (continuous innovation, minimal economic size, range of products,. . . ) Leads these firms to include in their behaviour more flexibility and a better response to market news. As a result, new adaptation modes are to be operated to preserve and increase the flexibility of small and medium firms. Firms cooperation appears like a dynamique response to the need of management of the range of activities of the new environnement. Thus, the competitive position doesn't depend only on internal resources but as well on the structure of external relations. The purpose of the study is to make a contribution to three essential points : - how can small and medium firms manage environnemental constraints using "inter-firms cooperation" ? - at which level should "inter-firms cooperation" be identified as a management solution ? - how to favour the emergence of cooperation solutions and to create an environnement enabling this mode of operation and of adaptation ? Cooperation between firms is a new strategic response for small and medium firms

Full textThe current economic environment has created a strong need for innovation in companies. To overcome the concurrence, they do not hesitate to use the innovation and creativity methods. We find several of them on the market; unfortunately some of them have limitations in their ability to help companies to find innovative solution. These methods are not all based on structured knowledge and history of products evolution as is the case for the TRIZ theory. This theory carries a real basis of concepts and principles that help to generate ideas for solutions to common problems in all areas. TRIZ inspired the development of several software based on its key concepts and tools. However, most of existing software has not incorporated the laws of evolution focused on the identification of trends of technical systems with a process of innovation to anticipate their future development. The benefit for these companies is to have available methods that can help in this area. Our goal is to explore the TRIZ theory to propose a model to apply the law of evolution of TRIZ in innovation of products. Our model is based on the essential concepts of the theory especially resolving contradictions and laws of evolution. The model that we propose is intended for research and development teams and allows companies making profits by saving time in fetching the areas of product enhancements specifically in search of the next generation of products

Full textAs well as the large companies, also the small and medium-sized enterprises desire to take advantage of modern management methods to improve their process, their performances and competitiveness. The interest of the SMEs is focused on the elements of the Lean Six Sigma concept that seem to be appropriate to achieve these goals. As we have identified a gap in the research on this topic and a methodological gap about the LSS implementation in the small and medium companies, we propose a methodology that we called LSS Plutus to design, apply and control Lean Six Sigma in the SMEs. It is dedicated to the small and medium production enterprises and it takes into account their specificity. For this purpose, we have limited the traditional LSS toolbox used by the large companies. We have also created two variants to apply our methodology according to the different needs, capacities and maturities of the SMEs. We have developed indicators, tools, as well as a practical guide for applying the LSS for the production SMEs and its computerized version in TIBCO. To enhance the efficiency of the improvements, we have deployed the planning, standardization and sustainability of the changes. For this purpose, we propose to modify the criteria of the EFQM Excellence Model in order to adapt it to the operating conditions of the Lean Six Sigma method in the SMEs. The proposed methodology has been verified in two production SMEs in Poland and in France that confirmed its utility and effectiveness in terms of performance improvement and organizational development

Full textCooperation between rival firms, also named horizontal cooperation, is a main component of collective strategies that have been acknowledged for the successful development of SMEs. Hierarchical regression analysis is employed to test the theoretical model on data collected from a sample of 158 Micro-SMEs belonging to the dairy industry, distributed in three French and six Mexican geographical concentrations. The results indicate that trust does play an important role for explaining cooperation, as well as individualism, uncertainty and reputation, on the contrary neither opportunism nor masculinity have as much explicative power; whilst horizontal cooperation was mainly explained by trust in business ties, uncertainty and reputation. Horizontal cooperation depends less on the environment in general than on local institutions and the way in which their supply chain is organized. Explaining interfirm general cooperation by the environment in which the firm is embedded is more adequate

Full textAt the present time, hazardous waste. In small quantities is found mixed with household waste or discharged into public sewers, which usually hinders either household waste treatment or purification plant processing. This type of waste can be generated by households, but also, for the major part, by ether economic actors : craftsmen, shopkeepers, small businesses and liberal professions. The quantitative evaluation of this waste flow plays a major rôle in determining the essential parameters required for the implementation of a separate collection system for this waste. The EVAD method concerns the fields of activity bringing together a large number of small firms in a limited area, which use the same products and generate the same types of waste. For these activities, it is possible to deduce waste quantities from two pieces of information : the main activity and an activity level indicator. EVAD's aim is to evaluate, through surveys, and from the total number of employees and the activity code (NAF), the hazardous waste quantities generated by small businesses ( with less than fifty employees). This data had been chosen because it can easily be obtained for each firm from the company files provided by specialist organisations. Software enables the method to be easily applied. It can be split up into two main sub-systems : the first one called "Enrichment" enables the database to be updated by adding new survey results, whereas the second one, "Extrapolation", uses parameters calculated by the "Enrichment" sub-system to evaluate waste quantities generated in each geographical unit zone. Three fields of activity have been studied using the EVAD method : automotive services, metal working (machining operations) and printing. The types of waste concerned are hazardous waste, generated by these activities: used batteries, used brake fluids, cleaning solvents, oils, dirty rags and photo processing chemicals

Full textThis research examines the conditions under which an environmental scanning coalition of small enterprises in the mechanical industry and reporting 50 employees or less within the rhone-alps region of france, is feasible. As the objective of this research-action is to identify the critical success factors of implementing a collective environmental scanning mechanism involving a number of smes, + procedural requirements ; which should be useful to both future researchers and owner/managers of small firms are presented. The cooperation represents a process of social interaction among a number of owner/managers within the framework of exchanging and sharing anticipatory information. In this context, a collective learning process is created which allows small firms to benefit from the acquired information of the others shareholders and to use this information to improve their flexibility. The depth of analysis characterizes the study as the lack of a conceptual model represents one of the major reasons for using an exploratory research of the field study observations of smes. The results are presented within the conceptual framework of collective learning and an implementation method to guide administrators who share a desire to optimize their environmental scanning capacities through a joint effort with other like minded owner-managers. To the end, we formulated a number of hypotheses regarding a successful environmental scanning coalition of smes, which are based upon both the conceptual model and a longitudinal analysis of empirical findings. The proposal method presented here should not be taken to represent a normative model. The study will be repeated among smes in order to verify the findings. This will be enable us to propose a formal model of the access, processing and utilization of information collected through inter-firm scanning activities, as well as to set out guidelines for the implementation of an environmental scanning coalition of smes

Full textOur objective concerns the study of organizational and/or managerial changes of french SME, generated after the participation in european R&D project. We purpose a modelling of european organization cooperative, whose anchoring point is the universalist european model of Calori and al. (1994-1995). This model bases itself on the acquisition during the cooperation of a multicultural socioeconomic cognition, which will be shared in the organization by the Weick’s institutionalization, will be at the origin of new management practices and in turn sources of performances. A comparative methodology between SME taking part in european project cooperation and those with national projects was privileged in order to increase the validity of the results. The empirical results concerning twenty one SME show that: the multicultural socioeconomic cognition was acquired; only it is not crossed at the organizational level, the multicultural aspect distinguishes european SME cooperative of those national, the spin-offs of european project cooperative are as important than objectives in consortium agreements, a new human resources management was appeared during the european project cooperative, and project management becomes inescapable for both populations of SME

Full textOur major aim is to elevate the accuracy in reflecting the performance of tourism destinations, as well as focusing on those determinants that lead to a better performance. For that purpose, we first establish a link between works on tourist attraction theory. We show that two classifications can be linked by a common unit of measurement: time. This is of particular interest for destination management because it improves knowledge about the central element of the destination and provides a means for the destinations manager to anticipate the tourist's length of stay and to optimize their attraction offer. In line with this reflexion, we employ an efficiency assessment procedure based on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the procedure of Simar and Wilson (2007). We make an evaluation of the French regions for the rationalisation of their tourism strategies and precise which kinds of tourism attractions can improve destination competitiveness. Furthermore, a focus on tourism destination competition can be of particular interest to collective strategy theory aiming at destination development. Tourism destinations are generally dominated by small land medium sized enterprises and more precisely by micro-businesses which often have reservations to employ such collective strategy. This situation is illustrated in our work by the strategy used by a seaside destination in the south of France, Argelès-sur-Mer. This situation implies that the Destination Management Organizations (DMO) which want to develop their destination through a collective strategy have to have a good knowledge of this type of organizations. The aim of our research is to investigate and clarify such small tourism business reservation to participation in local collective strategies. Its contribution lies in the interpretation of such resistance in relation to the proximity management of small and medium sized enterprises theory (Torrès, 2004), and by doing a network analysis

Full textOur research project aims to define the skills witch can be used to provide strategic support for small and medium size companies run by owner-managers in the field of traditional sub-contracting. Some of these companies, locked into local production systems, have been weakened by the restructuring taking place in industrial supply chains such as those of car industry sub-contracting. The scarcity of studies dealing with the specific strategic problems of these companies leaves their managers poorly equipped to carry out the strategic changes witch are indispensable for their development or even survival, especially in an area characterised by powerful constraints and with a strong structure of industrial representation. In spite of the difficult circumstances faced by these companies we believe, on the basis of exploratory research on the strategic position of the industries of the Arve Valley, that their managers could develop differentiating advantages, though this would mean developing more proactive strategic behaviour. To do this our engineering research approach aims to create a way of helping the strategic configuration of these companies in co-operation with those who have to act on the ground. The identification of margins for manoeuvre for these sub-contractors requires a systemic approach witch involves putting the representation of owner-managers in relation with those of other key actors such as those giving orders. Furthermore, the inventory of strategic resources and key skills allows us to identify levers for development, notably in terms of developing new services flows. Finally, opening a debate about strategy in companies generally focussed on the operational and the short term has the effect of helping to bring people together to create a strategic thrust for the company. In the end the method helps us to draw up an intelligible picture of the company's situation in terms of resources and key skills, to build a shared strategic vision, and to design a programme of strategic actions. It can notably stimulate developments in the strategic configuration of the company and prompt owner-managers to be more proactive in their strategic behaviour

In principle, these are intended and applied in environment of line assembly production with repetitives operations and large-scale manufacturing. As more than 90% of canadian manufacturing companies are pme, and their production environment is generally job-shop type with lots production, we have elaborated an evaluating model by simulation, allowing to prove to an entreprise with these caracterestics, the advantage of kanban method in its production environment. This model has been experimented in a quebec pme of clothing industry, and the results prove that such method is applicable and give satisfactory results for this type of production environment. For exemple, kanban reduces in-process inventory about 60% and the makespan time about 12. 5%. Kanban method implant has been subsequently realised in this entreprise and the results obtaines by simulation were confirmed. Full textIn France and Turkey SMEs make up nearly all current enterprises and play a very important role in the regulation of economic and social life in both countries. In order to protect them, but above all, in order to encourage them to adopt more global performance, the action of SME managers has to be oriented towards socialy responsable governance. To achieve this, they have to adopt the rules of corporate governance. However, these management rules, originally intented to control the action of the managers of big US managerial firms, are not adapted to family and entrepreneurial SMEs and to the context in which this particular category of enterprise evolves. Indeed, SME managers have many difficulties to leverage private funds. They have to adopt a pragmatic approach to ensure the existence of their enterprises. It is quite normal, therefore, for them to do business in economic terms before considering social relations and societal questions. Moreover, many mechanisms of corporate governance don’t take into account the organizational and functional characteristics of this particular category of enterprise. SME managers work in a strong context of proximity characterised by the informality of relations with stakeholders. Such enterprises, since they are barely visible to the general public, often work localy or regionaly. Managers are close to their employees, suppliers and creditors, associates and customers. The ownership of capital property is not diluted very much so that the functions of ownership, management and control are often all in the hands of one strong individual (the owner-manager) or his/her relatives. In these conditions, the principles of corporate governance, as they exist today, are not easily implemented by SMEs managers to the extent that the modes of governance they adopt are barely influenced by corporate governance and its mechanisms

Full textABSTRACT : This thesis focuses on the creation of a knowledge management system (KMS) design method for SMEs. Knowledge management (KM) can indeed be profitable to SMEs, but existing frameworks that take their specificities and needs into account face several problems. We thus interested ourselves in how to design a sustainable and adapted KMS for a SME? A literature study hinted 2 hypotheses. The first is that the characteristics and the needs of the SME can be used to choose KM tools and practices adapted to a SME, and build a custom made KMS. The second concerns the need to guide the designer and to involve the end user in the design process, in order to make the KMS sustainable and adapted. To tackle this problem, we designed a 3-step method. The first step consists in auditing the company’s important characteristics in regard to KM and its needs. The second step offers a tools and practice database and a selection process based on the company audit. The selected tools and practices are then used to design a tailor-made KMS while taking resources into account and involving end users. The third step consists in implementing the KMS in the firm, training the users and allowing them to perform the necessary evolutions according to emerging needs. This method was applied in Sysnav, a 25 employees SME, and resulted in the design of a well-adapted KMS

Full textBusiness information is vital today for the operation of any organization or business. While, big enterprises can, to some extent, fulfil their information needs based on their own resources and capacities, this is not the case for the majority of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SME) due to a lack of resources. Therefore, SMEs look for support from external bodies such as governmental agencies and non-governmental bodies, like Business Membership Organizations (BMOs), to meet their information needs. This state of affairs applies to the stone and marble SMEs in Palestine. They represent the backbone of the industrial sector in the country. The stone and marble SMEs face many challenges. This leads them to look for external support mainly from the Union of Stone and Marble Industry (USM) as their main representative organization. In this context, the overall objective of this study is to analyse the informational and communicational role of the USM and to put forward an appropriate configuration of a Business Intelligence (BI) system for the USM so that it can fulfil its informational mandate to member SMEs in a more effective way. To do this, a literature review was carried out into the informational and communicational roles of BMOs, the concept of BI and its implementation, and Critical Success factors (CSFs). This led to using a decision aiding process, in particular, the PROMETHEE outranking methodology to develop and evaluate different alternatives of how to operate each of the BI process tasks. A decisional Delphi Technique was adapted to derive a set of evaluation criteria in order to evaluate the performance of different alternatives for each Business Intelligence Process (BIP) task. The findings of the study showed that the USM need to work mainly with the Palestinian Stone and Marble Centre in order to develop its BIP tasks. The researcher recommends step-by-step interventions to ensure a successful implementation of BI so that the USM can better fulfil its informational and communicational role
