Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This research is devoted to the analysis of two major topics. First, the relationship between form and content (syntax and semantic). Second, the analysis of certain aspects of the complex sentence in contemporary literary arabic. The first point, however constitutes the general body in which this study is treated. In fact, the principal question risen here is as follows : is the linguistic analysis, exclusively based on the form -regard less to the content- rigorous and exhaustive for the study of a given language? the answer this study presents is a negative one. However, the study of certain linguistic theories such as the generative grammar and the structural syntax (in the first part), and the analysis of concrete structure of language, arabic in this case (in the second, third and fourth parts), such a study shows us that the formal ana- lyses are too far to illuminate the problems that the analysis of the structure of a language rises. Departing from the formalist studies of g. Ayoub, "la structure de la phrase verbale en arabe standard" and a. Fassi fihri, "la linguistique arabe, form et interpretation", it seems that a formal analysis does not exhaust all the problems of the structures of arabic lan- guage suggest, such as the topic structure, the completing structure and the relative structure. Some formal hypothesises like "topic" and "complementzer phrase". . . Remain non convincing. Therefore we think that an analysis not separating form and content is as adequate as necessary. Hence, the implicit postulate "functional structure" is the most pertinent level for the study of a language as well as for the analysis of the relationship between the syntax and the semantic

Abstract:
This thesis aims to highlight the originality of French (hypotactic) and Chinese (paratactic) languages and the reasons of their differences. Falling within contrastive linguistics mostly theoretical, this study focuses on the comparisons with regard to three aspects. Firstly, the general diachronic comparisons of French and Chinese allow us to better understand the affiliations between Latin and French, between archaic Chinese and contemporary Chinese. Secondly, to show their original character – hypotactic in Latin and French, paratactic in contemporary and archaic Chinese, the comparisons are implemented between French and Chinese, and between their origins, Latin and archaic Chinese, on three syntactic aspects: the word order, the correspondence between word classes and syntactic functions in the simple sentence and the ratio of proposals in the complex sentence. Finally, the comparison of philosophical reflections on language between the Greek antiquity and the Chinese antiquity, and the presentation of cultural divergence between individuality and global nature showing the Western and Chinese intellectual originality, allow us to detect from a philosophical and cultural perspective the underlying reason for their different original characters

Zong, Meng. "Analyse fonctionnelle de la subordination en mandarin moderne." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Sorbonne université, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024SORUL089.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis offers a comprehensive description and functional analysis of subordination in modern Mandarin, clearly defining subordinators and subordinate clauses, as well as their syntactic functions and semantics. By relying on functional linguistics and real corpora drawn primarily from social media, the study reflects the contemporary and dynamic use of the language. The research distinguishes the class of subordinators based on their syntactic behavior and mutual exclusivity. The paradigm of subordinators is examined through the morphemes and unitary complexes that compose them, including their variants and semantic nuances. The types of predicates they connect and their positions within the sentence are also addressed. Subordinate clauses in Mandarin are distinguished according to the function assumed by the secondary predicate in relation to the main predicate: circumstantial and argumental (subject and object). The secondary predicate can serve as a determiner of a noun contained in the main clause (relative clause or noun-modifying subordinate clause). For each function, a detailed description of the syntactic structure is provided, followed by an in-depth analysis of the characteristics of the predicates. The study also explores the possible expansions of both the main and secondary predicates, as well as the semantic nuances related to the relationship between these predicates, thus allowing for a cross-synthesis between syntax and semantics. This thesis aims to enrich studies on subordination not only from syntactic and semantic perspectives but also by contributing to typological research

Abstract:
This essay deals with the issue of readability, the term readability referring to what it is that makes a reader perceive a text as difficult or easy. Some factors are related to the reader but there are also those which depend on the text as such, one such factor being style which is the one that will be focused on in this essay. The investigation is based on the analysis and comparison of a complete version and an abridged version of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, and the questions to be investigated are whether the author of the abridged version has succeeded in making it less complicated, and if he or she has done so by considering stylistic features said to be affecting readability. Further, this essay is divided into four chapters. The first chapter contains the background for the analysis and is divided into 4 parts dealing with the following aspects: the definition of readability, early research on readability, later research on readability, and difficult and easy language. Chapter two describes the limitations made and the method used for the analysis which involves looking at the noun phrase, the verb phrase, and the clause. Chapter three gives a detailed description of the corpus investigated. Moving on to chapter four, this is where the results of the investigation are presented. This is done by dividing it into four different subchapters, each of them dealing with issues related to the different areas described in the method. Each of the subchapters then begins with the presentation of the results for each edition which is then followed by a comparative discussion. The essay ends with a conclusion part where conclusions regarding the four areas presented in the analysis are made along with the answering of research questions.

Lexicalists assume that words with derivational morphology and compound words are not formed by syntactic transformation (Selkirk, 1982). The Lexicalist Hypothesis implies that the principles of universal grammar are not operative to word formation.<br>This thesis argues that a word is composed of lexical constituents and post-lexical constituents, and that the post-lexical constituents can incorporate into a verb, to form the complex predicate. This formational process is subject to syntactic constraints and principles. Therefore, I claim that the principles of universal grammar are also operative to word formation. This hypothesis will throw a new light upon the area of language acquisition of complex predicates.

Chuang, Yuan-Ting. "Interaction entre le temps, l'aspect et le mode dans les phrases complexes en mandarin moderne." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA030018/document.

Abstract:
La seconde partie consiste à analyser l’interaction du TAM dans divers types de phrases complexes, comprenant des phrases subordonnées ou des constructions verbale en série<br>This dissertation is a corpus-based study of the tense, aspect and mood (TAM) and the interaction between these three categories in complex sentences in modern Mandarin Chinese. It aims to answer three questions related to the interpretation of temporality in Mandarin: (i) How temporal, aspectual and modal categories are marked and how they interact in complex sentences? ; (ii) What are the differences between the interactions of TAM in complex sentences and those in simple sentences? ; (iii) How is temporal sequence expressed in Mandarin? The temporal theory of Comrie (1985) and the aspectual model developed by Tournadre (2004) will be used as the theoretical framework to analyze the data. In the first part, we first introduce the concepts and theories of TAM used in general linguistics. Then we discuss the linguistic means used in Mandarin to convey temporal, aspectual and modal concepts, and the functioning of these three categories in simple sentences in order to compare it with the functioning in complex sentences. The second part is devoted to the analysis the interaction of TAM categories in various types of complex sentences which include those in subordinate clauses and verbal construction in series

Abstract:
The main purpose of this paper is to conduct a study and make analysis regarding the techniques, technologies and systems that have been evolved in the recent decades as branches of the broadest domain, which is Artificial Intelligence (AI) having as main objective to emulate the similar processes found in nature at living beings, especially those human cognitive. We will survey techniques such as pattern matching, learning and evolving from stimulus that make computer programs behave like humans. We'll state what the Turing test is and who was the first computer program to pass it, ELIZA, that relied mainly on pattern matching. This is only the beginning of our research in the domain previously stated, and we will focus here on natural language processing, the grammatical constraints that determine how natural language is generated and understood. The desire to explain language comes from ancient world, but not even today, after centuries of thought, a complete understanding of language seems to be a long way off. We'll see that engaging a computer program into a dialog is a very complex process that requires multiple types of knowledge from the following categories: phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, (compositional) semantics, pragmatics and politeness (discourse). The grammatical constraints that determine the understanding and generation of natural language phrases are expressed using a technique called X-bar Schema, which breaks a phrase into groups based on their word types (noun, verb, adjective, preposition, pronoun etc.) and represents them as a tree structure composed of maximal projection nodes and intermediate nodes. We will show what are the rules of this type of representation in order for the phrase to remain correct and give concrete examples of trees representations. We proposed to connect our examples with intelligent agents from famous Hollywood movies, such as HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey, Joi from Blade Runner 2049, Ava from Ex Machina, and many more, all these with the goal to emphasize what does it mean for an intelligent computer program to imitate human behavior that we do daily without being aware of the complexity of processes it involves.

Plot, Mojca, Saška Roškar, and Helena Gabrijelčič Tomc. "Evaluation of the impact of an awareness-based animation on students’ knowledge about mental illness." In 10th International Symposium on Graphic Engineering and Design. University of Novi Sad, Faculty of technical sciences, Department of graphic engineering and design,, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.24867/grid-2020-p75.

Abstract:
Animation is an exceptionally good medium for educating and raising awareness of the issues that are more difficult to talk about, such as mental illness. The use of animation and graphics in society awareness and education can improve knowledge and communication about issues related to mental illness. Despite various destigmatization activities, people are still reluctant to directly approach individuals suffering from mental illness, partly because they do not have enough knowledge on the subject. Therefore, the aim of our study was to test whether animation can improve the knowledge about appropriate / inappropriate conversations with a person suffering from depression in a Slovenian student population. We focused on education and awareness-based animation (adapted to the target group) to evoke empathy without arousing pity and to indirectly encourage people in need and others to talk about it. The methodology included the surveying of the participants and their knowledge about appropriate and inappropriate conversations with a person suffering from depression (22 phrases, 11 appropriate and 11 inappropriate). 251 participants aged 19 to 30 completed the survey. Participants were asked to rate each phrase for appropriateness on a 5-point Likert scale before and after being exposed to the animation. The results obtained were analysed using the paired samples t-test. The desired change in knowledge was confirmed by comparing the average scores of the survey responses before and after viewing the animation. A statistically significant result was obtained in 18 of 22 sentences. A change in the desired direction was detected in 81% of the statements. Our study had some limitations, but we nevertheless conclude that an awareness-based animation can be a useful tool to increase knowledge and subsequently influence behavioural change in the student population.

Băcilă, Florina-Maria. "Proper names and the configuration of intimacy with the Divine in Traian Dorz’s poetry." In International Conference on Onomastics “Name and Naming”. Editura Mega, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.30816/iconn5/2019/71.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper aims to analyse values of meanings of proper names which have the role to convey the intimate connection between the human soul and the Divinity, as this intimacy is configured in the poetry by Traian Dorz, a less studied contemporary Romanian writer, the author of thousands of lines of mystical poetry and of several volumes of memoires and religious mediations. Thus, in an important number of literary creations inspired by biblical truths and verses, nouns like Mire (‘groom’), Soţ (‘husband’), Frate (‘brother’), Prieten (‘friend’), Dor (‘longing’) etc. are integrated in original lyrical definitions or phrases which substitute the name of God. From the viewpoint of Christianity, these nominal phrases point out the human being’s aspiration towards the ecstatic state, as the human being is described during its mystical ascension, until the true, complete and everlasting unification with its Creator.

Abstract:
Alternative Communication Boards (ACB) are used to compensate for the difficulties faced by people with complex communication needs. These boards facilitate the construction of telegraphic phrases through visual cues, using colors and pictograms to represent the grammatical class and the meaning of the words, respectively. In this paper, we present the combination of three essential materials to construct a semantic ACB. In this context, a Semantic ACB is a communication board that uses a semantic script to guide the message authoring. The proposal was evaluated using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as a basis. The results demonstrate that caregivers are more interested in a semantic ACB that is useful than in one that is easy to use.

Abstract:
Cells are the smallest units of life. The environment around cells is always changing. Cells need to adapt to survive. This curriculum linked game and lesson plan introduces the world of cells to pupils 8-13. But can they keep their cells alive? This is a guide to how the cell survival resources can be used in a lesson and can be adapted as the teacher sees fit to do so. This lesson is aimed at 8-13 year olds, and fits into an hour long session. This Cell Survival Game has been adapted for use in the classroom and contains new and improved artwork. Accompanying videos and activity sheets complete the learning experience. Learning Outcomes – Cells are the smallest unit of life – There are many different types of cells, and some examples of cell types – Cells experience many dangers, and some examples of dangers – How cells notice and defend themselves against dangers Links to the Curriculum – Health and Wellbeing: I am developing my understanding of the human body – Languages: I can find specific information in a straight forward text (book and instructions) to learn new things, I discover new words and phrases (relating to cells) – Mathematics: I am developing a sense of size and amount (by using the dice), I am exploring number processes (addition and subtraction) and understand they represent quantities (steps to finish line), I am learning about measurements (cell sizes) and am exploring patterns (of cell defences against dangers) – Science: I am learning about biodiversity (different types of microbes), body systems, cells and how they work. – Technology: I am learning about new technologies (used to understand how cells work). Accompanying videos and activity sheets (available at https://dx.doi.org/10.20933/100001270) complete the learning experience.

Paynter, Robin A., Celia Fiordalisi, Elizabeth Stoeger, et al. A Prospective Comparison of Evidence Synthesis Search Strategies Developed With and Without Text-Mining Tools. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.23970/ahrqepcmethodsprospectivecomparison.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: In an era of explosive growth in biomedical evidence, improving systematic review (SR) search processes is increasingly critical. Text-mining tools (TMTs) are a potentially powerful resource to improve and streamline search strategy development. Two types of TMTs are especially of interest to searchers: word frequency (useful for identifying most used keyword terms, e.g., PubReminer) and clustering (visualizing common themes, e.g., Carrot2). Objectives: The objectives of this study were to compare the benefits and trade-offs of searches with and without the use of TMTs for evidence synthesis products in real world settings. Specific questions included: (1) Do TMTs decrease the time spent developing search strategies? (2) How do TMTs affect the sensitivity and yield of searches? (3) Do TMTs identify groups of records that can be safely excluded in the search evaluation step? (4) Does the complexity of a systematic review topic affect TMT performance? In addition to quantitative data, we collected librarians' comments on their experiences using TMTs to explore when and how these new tools may be useful in systematic review search¬¬ creation. Methods: In this prospective comparative study, we included seven SR projects, and classified them into simple or complex topics. The project librarian used conventional “usual practice” (UP) methods to create the MEDLINE search strategy, while a paired TMT librarian simultaneously and independently created a search strategy using a variety of TMTs. TMT librarians could choose one or more freely available TMTs per category from a pre-selected list in each of three categories: (1) keyword/phrase tools: AntConc, PubReMiner; (2) subject term tools: MeSH on Demand, PubReMiner, Yale MeSH Analyzer; and (3) strategy evaluation tools: Carrot2, VOSviewer. We collected results from both MEDLINE searches (with and without TMTs), coded every citation’s origin (UP or TMT respectively), deduplicated them, and then sent the citation library to the review team for screening. When the draft report was submitted, we used the final list of included citations to calculate the sensitivity, precision, and number-needed-to-read for each search (with and without TMTs). Separately, we tracked the time spent on various aspects of search creation by each librarian. Simple and complex topics were analyzed separately to provide insight into whether TMTs could be more useful for one type of topic or another. Results: Across all reviews, UP searches seemed to perform better than TMT, but because of the small sample size, none of these differences was statistically significant. UP searches were slightly more sensitive (92% [95% confidence intervals (CI) 85–99%]) than TMT searches (84.9% [95% CI 74.4–95.4%]). The mean number-needed-to-read was 83 (SD 34) for UP and 90 (SD 68) for TMT. Keyword and subject term development using TMTs generally took less time than those developed using UP alone. The average total time was 12 hours (SD 8) to create a complete search strategy by UP librarians, and 5 hours (SD 2) for the TMT librarians. TMTs neither affected search evaluation time nor improved identification of exclusion concepts (irrelevant records) that can be safely removed from the search set. Conclusion: Across all reviews but one, TMT searches were less sensitive than UP searches. For simple SR topics (i.e., single indication–single drug), TMT searches were slightly less sensitive, but reduced time spent in search design. For complex SR topics (e.g., multicomponent interventions), TMT searches were less sensitive than UP searches; nevertheless, in complex reviews, they identified unique eligible citations not found by the UP searches. TMT searches also reduced time spent in search strategy development. For all evidence synthesis types, TMT searches may be more efficient in reviews where comprehensiveness is not paramount, or as an adjunct to UP for evidence syntheses, because they can identify unique includable citations. If TMTs were easier to learn and use, their utility would be increased.

Thomas, Strobel. A contrastive approach to grammatical doubts in some contemporary Germanic languages (German, Dutch, Swedish). Goethe-Universität Frankfurt a.M., 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.21248/gups.72278.

Full text
Abstract:
Unquestionably (or: undoubtedly), every competent speaker has already come to doubt with respect to the question of which form is correct or appropriate and should be used (in the standard language) when faced with two or more almost identical competing variants of words, word forms or sentence and phrase structure (e.g. German "Pizzas/Pizzen/Pizze" 'pizzas', Dutch "de drie mooiste/mooiste drie stranden" 'the three most beautiful/most beautiful three beaches', Swedish "större än jag/mig" 'taller than I/me'). Such linguistic uncertainties or "cases of doubt" (cf. i.a. Klein 2003, 2009, 2018; Müller &amp; Szczepaniak 2017; Schmitt, Szczepaniak &amp; Vieregge 2019; Stark 2019 as well as the useful collections of data of Duden vol. 9, Taaladvies.net, Språkriktighetsboken etc.) systematically occur also in native speakers and they do not necessarily coincide with the difficulties of second language learners. In present-day German, most grammatical uncertainties occur in the domains of inflection (nominal plural formation, genitive singular allomorphy of strong masc./neut. nouns, inflectional variation of weak masc. nouns, strong/weak adjectival inflection and comparison forms, strong/weak verb forms, perfect auxiliary selection) and word-formation (linking elements in compounds, separability of complex verbs). As for syntax, there are often doubts in connection with case choice (pseudo-partitive constructions, prepositional case government) and agreement (especially due to coordination or appositional structures). This contribution aims to present a contrastive approach to morphological and syntactic uncertainties in contemporary Germanic languages (mostly German, Dutch, and Swedish) in order to obtain a broader and more fine-grained typology of grammatical instabilities and their causes. As will be discussed, most doubts of competent speakers - a problem also for general linguistic theory - can be attributed to processes of language change in progress, to language or variety contact, to gaps and rule conflicts in the grammar of every language or to psycholinguistic conditions of language processing. Our main concerns will be the issues of which (kinds of) common or different critical areas there are within Germanic (and, on the other hand, in which areas there are no doubts), which of the established (cross-linguistically valid) explanatory approaches apply to which phenomena and, ultimately, the question whether the new data reveals further lines of explanation for the empirically observable (standard) variation.
