De, Kock Evan. "An investigation into the window of opportunity for a small to medium size enterprise in the South African plastics industry as a manufacturer of industrial plastic wrapping." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/53277.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The South African business environment is undergoing drastic changes. Unemployment is on the increase, globalisation is becoming a serious factor to contend with, competition in many industries is increasing and the South African government is pursuing more international investments. All these factors contribute to these changes. Many companies are rationalising to ensure competitiveness within the South African economy and to ensure that products are competitive with international brands entering South Africa. Increasing unemployment in South Africa is forcing individuals to develop an entrepreneurial spirit. The only method to curb this wave of unemployment is to invest in a small to medium size enterprise. Entrepreneurs in the USA have permanently altered the economy of the USA in the past 30 years. It is felt that this entrepreneurial spirit will also change the South African economy in years to follow. This research project analysed and discussed the window of opportunity for a small to medium size enterprise manufacturing plastic wrapping. The Plastics Industry Analysis Framework was developed to ensure a comprehensive insight into the plastics industry of South Africa. This framework is the combination of the Five Forces Model of Competition and the General Framework for an Industry Analysis, both developed by Michael Porter. The research found that the plastics industry is currently undergoing drastic changes, specifically in regard to South African legislation. It was also found that the plastics industry historically grew by 5% per annum, however, in recent years this growth was negative. Since 1998 the plastics industry reduced in size by 7,1%. Legislation in regard to plastic bags has had a major impact on the plastics industry. The research found that nearly 2000 additional jobs have been lost. The research found that the window of opportunity for a small to medium size plastic wrapping enterprise is limited. The effect of the new legislation on plastic bags is not clearly known, however, it has already negatively influenced the plastics industry. Opportunities do exist within other market sectors of the plastics industry of which recycling and export market sectors are prime examples. Future opportunities within the plastics industry will have to be carefully analysed to ensure success of any new venture.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die Suid-Afrikaanse sake-omgewing ondergaan tans drastiese veranderinge.

Injection molding of plastic products is a low-cost, high production-rate processing technology which is suitable for automation; however, the quality of the product is highly nonlinear because of the variations in temperature, pressure, flow-rate and density of the materials. This study is aimed at identifying the operation windows for the injection molding process parameters which produce lenses with optimized contour precision. The operation conditions for products with qualified contour precision and the lowest cost can be determined through these operation parameter windows. Taguchi experimental method was used to determine the optimized set of process parameters, and the control factors were identified through the contribution of the variance for each parameter. Full factorial experiments were implemented to identify the appropriate regression model to construct response surface, and the central composite design (CCD) was used to progressively determine the range of process parameters for lenses with minimum form error. The data points of the experiments were constructed the operation parameter windows, and confirmation experiments were performed to verify the validity of the windows.

In the eyes of the general, traditional industries, such as manufacturing and OEM livelihood products, are low cost, non-innovative, high-polluted industries, mostly negative stereotypes and are also marked as sunset industries. Thus, decades ago, a large numbers of Taiwanese companies took adventures developing business from Taiwan to Mainland China and Southeast Asia. Some were engulfed by the waves and some achieve successfully in foreign countries. At the same time, some manufacturers and OEM factories gradually move forward to excellent performance by strategy transformation. This paper mainly focuses on the development of Taiwanese PVC hard window covering manufacturers in overseas countries. Take one of the Taiwanese window covering manufacturers (A company) as an example, we investigate its strategy transformation process. The research is based on the case study research method, analyzing the environment by Mike Potter's five forces analysis. And based on the theory of strategy transformation and the resource based theory, the causes, types and achievements of A company's strategic change are analyzed. The transformation of A company consists of three phases, Phase 1 transformation comes from the threat of external environment generated by the regulation change happening to the target market (Lead free in the product formula). A transformation depending on the breakthrough development in relative products had successfully solved A company’s shipment-constrained situation in a short time. Phase 2 transformation comes from threats happening to external & internal environment simultaneously. A strategy transformation mainly on management process is adopted, that had been successfully upgraded production output & quality and elevated profit margin. Phase 3 transformation is still under developing. As existing issues in hard window covering industry are becoming more complicate & serious, based on past experience, the case company is pursuing a combination of product breakthrough and new market transformations. Based on the results of analysis, we propose some useful suggestions about phase 3 strategy transformation for the case company, and provide some suggestions about strategic analysis methods effectively react to the changing environment for traditional industries.
Kelly, Adrian L., Philip D. Coates, R. M. Rose, and S. Weston. "Recycling of uPVC window profile waste." 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/3154.
Full textMethods of recycling unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) window frame waste were investigated. The quality of untreated granular waste was compared to that of waste treated by a range of contaminant removal processes including melt filtration and dissolution. Processability of each recyclate was evaluated by using a highly instrumented single screw extruder that enabled melt viscosity and process variation to be monitored in real time. Product quality measurements such as mechanical properties and surface defects were made on extruded strip, and the nature of the stabilizers present was determined. The mechanical properties of recyclates were found to be comparable to or better than those of virgin material in all cases and conformed to industry standards for window profile. Contaminant removal stages significantly reduced the amount of large surface defects detected in extrudate. Processability was comparable to that of virgin compounds, but melt viscosity varied among different batches of recyclate, depending on the source and composition of the original PVC formulation.
