Full textThrough the analysis of illustrated magazines, films, television programmes, travelogues, this thesis aims to offer a broad overview on the most widespread representations of Africa in 1960s Italian society. The study examines a decade of transition for both Italy and Africa: while the former, after losing Libya, Eritrea and Ethiopia during the Second World War, ends its trusteeship in Somalia, the latter is in the midst of liberation struggles and celebrates the birth of the new independent states, finally free to imagine itself emancipated from European influence. The case studies presented highlight the various aspects of the Italian view on the African continent: reluctant to recognise the potential of the new states and still marked by a strong exotic and colonial component, it struggles to consider Africa as part of world history, still holding it to be a simple destination par excellence for exotic Western escapes. As far as the former Italian colonial territories are concerned, they very often appear in the pages of magazines as a necessary background for the stories of the heroic deeds of the Italian army in Libya and East Africa. Alongside these representations are other, more marginal and militant ones, which reveal other ways in which the image of the Continent circulated in the media of the period: Africa and its desire for the future, an example for the various global revolutionary actors, fully embedded in History, and Africa as a continent in motion, finally freed from the immobility of myth.

Full textThe thesis analyzes the process of sexualization of the Italian cinema in the sixties. Following a chronological order, the study employs a methodology which combines film studies with cultural studies, the history of sexuality and gender studies. Its ultimate aim is to read the liberalization of the representations of sex in Italian cinema as part of a wider socio-cultural process. As such, the thesis reconstructs not only the cinematic culture of the time, but moreover consistently analyzes discourses on sexuality in publishing, newspapers and the popular press. Furthermore, it investigates the foreign influences in Italian popular culture, as proof of the increasing transnational character of the cultural industries. In particular, the five main sections of the thesis focus on: the theme of women’s emancipation in the film inchiesta, the dissemination of psychoanalysis and sexology in Italian mass culture and comedy, the representations of gender and sexuality in popular film genres, the “sexual revolution” in relation to the birth of the adult-only magazines and the formation of the “sexy” film genre.

Full textThe analysis was designed to track, through the application of a phenomenological method, a feeling that is common to the two disciplines. It also aims to identify relationships of homological correspondence able to highlight the spirit of the time that generated them, while fully respecting the relevant languages and in no way subjecting one to the other. The research therefore intends to extend the studies on contemporary art and design by applying the methodological tools of art criticism to the stylistic evolution of trends in Italian design. The intention was not to draw up a "history" of Italian design but it was necessary to define the area of application by choosing to consider only the field of furniture design. I have therefore opted for a global view of the sequence of events in product design, aimed at investigating major turning points and thus focusing the analysis on some of the leading figures in design culture. The tools used to conduct the analysis come mainly from the binary method identified by the art historian Heinrich Wölfflin and the studies of Renato Barilli, whose culturological system provided an essential contribution to the process of systematization of the mechanisms of variation internal to the arts; both horizontal ones, which mutually converge with other fields of knowledge, and vertical ones, which relate to the scientific and technological discoveries of contemporary material culture.
