Abstract:
Abstract. The research vessel and supply icebreaker POLARSTERN is the flagship of the Alfred-Wegener-Institut in Bremerhaven (Germany) and one of the infrastructural pillars of German Antarctic research. Since its commissioning in 1982, POLARSTERN has conducted 30 campaigns to Antarctica (157 legs, mostly austral summer), and 29 to the Arctic (94 legs, northern summer). Usually, POLARSTERN is more than 300 days per year in operation and crosses the Atlantic Ocean in a meridional section twice a year. The first radiosonde on POLARSTERN was released on the 29 December 1982, 2 days after POLARSTERN started on its maiden voyage to the Antarctic. And these daily soundings have continued up to the present. Due to the fact that POLARSTERN has reliably and regularly been providing upper air observations from data sparse regions (oceans and polar regions), the radiosonde data are of special value for researchers and weather forecast services alike. In the course of 30 years (29 December 1982 to 25 November 2012) a total of 12 378 radiosonde balloons were started on POLARSTERN. All radiosonde data can now be found at König-Langlo (2015, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.810000). Each data set contains the directly measured parameters air temperature, relative humidity and air pressure, and the derived altitude, wind direction and wind speed. 432 data sets additionally contain ozone measurements.Although more sophisticated techniques (meteorological satellites, aircraft observation, remote-sensing systems, etc.) have nowadays become increasingly important, the high vertical resolution and quality of radiosonde data remains paramount for weather forecasts and modelling approaches.

Abstract:
The article presents information about the international project MOSAiC, the largest polar expedition in recent years aimed at studying climate in the Arctic. At the center of the project is the Polar Star research icebreaker (Polarstern, Germany), which drifted along with sea ice through the Central Arctic from 2019 to 2020. The Polarstern has become the central observatory for atmospheric, ice, snow, oceanographic, environmental and biogeochemical studies. The Russian icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn took part in providing the expedition, which made 2 Arctic voyages to deliver people and various cargoes to the Polarstern ship. The diesel-electric icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn set a world record in the northern latitudes, for the first time independently reaching 88°28,4′ north latitude (the highest point, date of achievement — February 26, 2020). Medical support for the Arctic icebreaker’s flights was provided by the ship’s doctor FGBUZ SMKTS im. N.A.Semashko FMBA of Russia. The article presents the experience of the ship’s doctor in providing medical assistance to crew members and expeditions in extreme conditions of the Arctic.

Abstract:
A time series of wind stresses computed from European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) wind data is compared to the climatology of Hellermann & Rosenstein (HR) for the Southern Hemisphere. ECMWF stresses are generally stronger, especially in the westerly belt. However they have an overall lower meridional component than the HR data. The dominance of the half annual cycle relative to the annual wave in the zonal stress at middle to high latitudes, which is documented for independent data sets, is seen in the ECMWF but not in the HR data. ECMWF winds are also compared with measurements from three expeditions to the Weddell Sea by RV Polarstern. Good correlations between Polarstern and ECMWF winds are found but for single dates the differences are above 10 ms −1. The differences are found to be uncorrelated in space and are thus due to observational errors and to the unresolved small scale variance in the ECMWF analysed winds.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the recovery operation of the bottom station MABEL (Multidisciplinary Antarctic Benthic Laboratory) with a mass of 1,7 tons in air that has been deployed in December 2005 from the German research vessel Polarstern, by means of a release transponder at a water depth of 1850 m, close to the shelf ice edge near the German polar research station Neumayer. The project is run under the umbrella of the Italian Antarctic programme by the project leader INGV (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica i Vulcanlogia) /1/. During the cruise ANT XXV-2 of the Polarstern (organized by the German AWI - Alfred-Wegner-Institut) the German partners TFH Berlin and TU Berlin have been participating with their module MODUS (Mobile Docker for Underwater Sciences) to recover the station from the deep sea. The special circumstances in the Antarctic sea — the ice coverage of the deployment area and the tight time schedule for the operation — make such an operation quite delicate. This paper describes the special technology used both for the station and the recovery module. The operation itself will be discussed, showing the data of operation using a combined tracking of GPS-data and the underwater positioning system Posidonia of the Polarstern. The special circumstance of the operation was the inadequate data of the position achieved during the deployment, so that a safe search strategy had to be found. The mission ended successfully on December 16th, 2008 with the recovery of the MABEL station. Simulations for the system behaviour will be shown.
