Adequate vitamin D status plays an important role in bone health and may also protect against Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), multiple sclerosis and certain cancers. Vitamin D is obtained from two sources; diet and through skin synthesis through the action of ultraviolet (UV) light. Dietary intakes of vitamin D are low in New Zealand (NZ) and the majority of our vitamin D comes from UV exposure. The NZ population may be at risk of low vitamin D status because of low dietary intakes, the countrys latitude (35-46 S), and high proportion of darker skinned Maori and Pacific People. Reversing these age-related changes with alternative interventions, such as aerobic exercise, has shown some promising results. Recently, governments throughout the world have begun to pay attention to the association between the fine suspended particles PM2.5 and human health effects. In 2005, daily levels of PM2.5 particles have been included in the air quality monitoring stations in Taiwan. However, few studies have shown the associations between daily exposure to PM2.5 level and hospital admissions due to respiratory diseases. The objective

Threshold and non-threshold linear models that govern toxicology are challenged by an alternative model, hormesis. It is defined as low-dose stimulation and high-dose inhibition from a stressor. Insecticide-induced hormesis has been studied in a plethora of insect-insecticide models at biochemical, individual and population levels. This research focuses on the effects of sublethal concentrations of insecticides on reproductive responses of green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), at individual and population level besides regulation of stress, dispersal and developmental genes during hor

This thesis study is an intergenerational analysis of ethnic residential concentration, dispersion and socio-economic mobility in Australia's two main immigrant receiving cities, Sydney and Melbourne. The arrival of seven million immigrants from almost 200 countries since the end of World War 2 has transformed many urban local areas, that were once culturally homogeneous, into multi-ethnic neighbourhoods. Such areas are a spatial reflection of complex interactions between social and economic forces, the interpretation of which is debated. This study considers whether ethnic residential concent

INTRODUCTION AND AIM - Cardiovascular disease is globally a major risk factor for morbidity and mortality. It is caused by various factors, one of which is an abnormal haemostatic process. Fibrinogen is a haemostatic factor that is considered to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Elevated fibrinogen can be caused by environmental and genetic factors which increase the risk of the occurrence of thrombosis. The fibrinogen y' chain, which is one of the three chains of fibrinogen, has two different variants, the yA and y’. The presence of the fibrinogen y’ chain has been ass

It is known that genetic variability in drug response occurs as a result of molecular alterations at the level of drug metabolizing enzymes, drug targets/receptors, and drug transport proteins. It would play a crucial role to correlate the relationship between the genotyping and the phenotyping in successfully accomplishing personalized drug therapy.

Due to the heavy metals are less mobility and high residual in environment, they can accumulate in environmental easily.
Arsenic (As) exposure via groundwater consumption is a global health problem affecting millions. Monitoring exposure is a key step in understanding and predicating future health outcomes. This thesis explores the relationships between arsenic concentrations in toenails and arsenic in water. Three case studies were investigated, with residents from: North Carolina, USA (n=103); the Rift Valley, Ethiopia (n=60); and the Mekong Delta, Vietnam (n=65). Arsenic concentrations above the WHO's recommended 10ppb limit were found in groundwater from the three research sites.

Arsenic in toenail
