Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to test whether there are differences in the effectiveness of a Batterer Intervention Programme (BIP) for Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) perpetrators depending on the participants’ countries of origin (i.e., Spanish or Latin American immigrants). The sample included 425 male offenders who participated in a court-mandated standard BIP in Spain. Official recidivism and risk of recidivism were considered the final outcomes. Intention to change, responsibility attribution, adherence to treatment and treatment compliance were taken as the proximal outcomes. No differences were found in risk of recidivism, intention to change, responsibility attribution to the legal system and to the victim between the Spanish and Latin American participants. Significant differences between both groups were found for the variable treatment compliance. The results suggest that, at least for the Latin American immigrants participating in BIPs in Spain, it is apparently not necessary to adjust BIPs to cultural differences as adopting motivational strategies to promote change suffices.

Abstract:
Batterer intervention programs' (BIPs) curriculum have been criticized for their one-size-fits-all approach to rehabilitation with recent research suggesting specialized and client-centric approaches to batterer intervention may be more effective than traditional programming. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been examined as a risk factor for intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration and numerous studies suggest a relationship between ACEs and low mental health treatment engagement. However, absent from the conversation is how ACEs may influence BIP treatment engagement and more specifically how ACEs influence BIP program attendance and attrition. The current study used administrative data from a sample of 268 men enrolled in a county-operated BIP to explore this question. BIP participants who experienced any ACEs, only household dysfunction ACEs, and/or both household dysfunction ACEs and child abuse/neglect ACEs had decreased odds of BIP attrition compared to participants with no ACEs. These findings have practical implications regarding screening, service delivery, and BIP curricula and highlight additional research needed on this topic.

Abstract:
Abstract Medicaid has been at the forefront of policy efforts to “rebalance” long-term services and supports (LTSS) from institutional toward home- and community-based services (HCBS). The Balancing Incentives Program (BIP), authorized under the Affordable Care Act, sought to increase spending on HCBS relative to total LTSS among states that were spending less than 50% of total Medicaid LTSS dollars on HCBS each year. BIP’s benchmark for states to spend more than 50% of LTSS on HCBS was meant to improve states’ infrastructure to ensure an equitable, consumer-friendly process to access HCBS. For the first time, we quantified how states performed on HCBS expenditures. We analyzed state-level HCBS expenditure data for states eligible for BIP (n=35) from 2008 to 2015, which includes several years both before and after BIP implementation. We examined the effect of BIP on HCBS expenditures as a percent of total LTSS spending using fixed-effects modeling which controls for stable characteristics of states and years. We find that BIP states increased HCBS spending relative to non-BIP states, and this effect continued to grow over our study period. In the first year after BIP implementation, BIP states increased spending by 1.8% relative to non-BIP states. The difference in spending between BIP and non-BIP states is even larger in subsequent years (4.8% in year 2, 5.3% in year 3, and 5.8% in year 4). Results indicate that BIP prompted increased state-level spending that continued to rise several years after initial implementation of BIP.

Abstract:
Abstract The Balancing Incentive Program (BIP) was an optional Medicaid program within the Affordable Care Act. States spending less than 50% of Medicaid long-term services and supports on home and community-based services (HCBS) were eligible for the program and could participate from 2011 to 2015. Participating states received an enhanced federal match in exchange for rebalancing LTSS spending and adopting structural changes to their long-term services and supports system. The purpose of this study is to understand the barriers and facilitators to implementing the BIP in two states. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with individuals involved in HCBS policy nationally and in Maryland and Texas, including government bureaucrats, consumer advocates, and provider representatives. Findings indicate that factors that facilitated Maryland and Texas’ implementation of the BIP were regular communication with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and their consultants, Mission Analytics Group, merging the BIP with existing HCBS programs, and the substantial amount of funding associated with the program. On the other hand, the short duration of the BIP presented a challenge for states because they needed to enact multiple changes within a limited period of time. In addition, state procurement and contracting processes impeded the speed with which BIP requirements could be met. Key stakeholders, including consumer advocacy and provider organizations, often felt as though their state implemented the BIP with minimal input from interested groups. The findings indicate that the structure of the Balancing Incentive Program as well as internal state factors influenced the program’s implementation.

Northern Arizona University (NAU) students are researching a new approach to apply virtual reality (VR) to evaluate data from a collection of stored signals. Each signal will have limits attached which we will use to view the parts of the waveform which contain abnormalities. A program to illustrate the technique is being developed by NAU students. Initially, we were working with Vizard 5, using the Python language. However, there is another program, Unity, which will perhaps be more useful for the application we wish to achieve. Additionally, we are examining a technique to accurately access the telemetry data collected. The amount of telemetry data collected has increased over the years resulting in difficulties in identifying the relevant information. We are searching for a better approach to store and access big data and will demonstrate this approach by utilizing Oculus Rift and Microsoft Kinect.

Abstract:
Knowing audience behavior allows them to better develop the television offer, to attain higher audiences and to increase the value marketers are willing to pay for televiewers attention. This research approaches a reality show television programme which aims to explore the lives of other people in an entertaining manner for the viewer. Portuguese Big Brother ended up with SIC's hegemony over the portuguese television market and helped to consolidate TVI's schedule based on popular information and national drama fiction (novella) which turned the third television player into the national leader. Today these two biggest broadcasting companies are again battling over leadership of primetime's ratings. Big Brother VIP was the way that TVI found to compete against the well succeeded SIC's novella Dancin' Days. This study allowed to access the way the televiewer reacts to the show and made it possible to understand that the consumer wants to gratify its authenticity and voyeuristic needs. He/she likes comedy and social interaction between contestants and abominates manipulation. The results allowed to understand the regular viewer's behavior, what makes people watch the eviction and nominating shows and what influences the gratifications sought by watching the show. There were obtained four viewer profiles as well and the ideal contestant was defined as loyal, sociable and funny, concerned with others well-being, curious, ambitious, family-oriented, don't depends on others to be happy, humble, healthy, ascetic and denotes egalitarian tendencies.

Abstract:
The spin-offs phenomenon is getting an increasing attention by politicians, top level management, and economists, and is being recognized as an important factor in the strategic decision making process. The main objective and the highlight of this work were the analysis of the process of generation of spin-offs by firms participating in high-tech networks, a phenomenon which was considered as a black box. The analysis of the European space industry gave us a unique opportunity to observe closely more than 500 cases of spin-offs, thus enabling us to go inside the black box. A six phase model is developed, giving a coherent explanation of the overall dynamics of the process. The model is then applied to the analysis of the European space technology transfer mechanism. This case study supplied us with empiric evidence in testing the validity of the model. We hope that this work will both contribute to the theoretical understanding of the subject, and supply business managers and public decision makers an operational tool with which they may better control this important economic phenomenon

In media convergence environment and digitization of media, one of the Brazilian television trends has been the adoption of transmídias strategies, especially in formats with great appeal to the interactivity, as the reality show. Based in Fechine and Figueirôa (2011), we understand the transmediation as a production model that is based on the "repetition, pervasiveness and distribution in different technological platforms (TV, cinema, internet, mobile, etc.) content associated whose pivot is anchored in participatory culture stimulated by digital means". Based on this concept and taking into account the convergence culture scene, described by Jenkins (2008), this research aims to analyze the strategies transmídias in Big Brother Brazil, main reality show on Brazilian television, broadcast by Rede Globo since 2002. Based in audiovisual studies, convergence and transmediation, the paper proposes a categorization strategies and transmídias content of Big Brother Brazil based on systematic observation of the 2013 and 2014 editions.

Thesis (S.M. in Science Writing)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Humanities, Graduate Program in Science Writing, 2012.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 45-49).<br>Since ancient civilization, humanity has kept its eyes on the heavens, and the invention of telescopes has only increased its scrutiny. As astronomers strive to see the universe with increasing clarity, telescopes have been getting bigger, better, and more expensive. The astronomy community is currently preparing for the next generation of ground-based optical telescopes: giant behemoths that will have mirrors of over twenty meters in diameter, set atop of high, dark mountains. Technological advancements have finally made it possible to create telescopes this large, and they will be able to view the skies ten times more sharply than the Hubble Space Telescope. Once completed in a decade or so, these telescopes will shine light on our most pressing questions in astronomy. However, with price tags of around a billion dollars each, raising the money to build them is a challenge. This thesis explores the technology behind the extremely large telescopes and the politics behind their funding. Telescope research began as private ventures, the Medici family's patronage of Galileo being a famous historical example. Today, the story is not so simple, involving public governments, international collaborations, and endless fundraising. While over a dozen different extremely large telescopes have been proposed in the last two decades, only three remain as viable ventures: the Giant Magellan Telescope, the Thirty Meter Telescope, and the European Extremely Large Telescope. This thesis recounts their unfinished story.<br>by Fangfei Shen.<br>S.M.in Science Writing

Abstract Even so, no country in sub-Saharan Africa before 2000 had national control programs for any of the seven programs, with the exception of cervical cancer. Onchocerciasis is the target of the Africa Program for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) with the help of many NGOs organisation using the drug mectizan (ivermectin). The use of drug financing at APOC is revolutionary. They had, for the first time, established as a viable concept with leprosy control programs, and now, with APOC, demonstrated that pharmaceutical companies can and will reuse a drug and treat it as part of a humanitarian response. This book chapter focused on repurposing drugs against schistosomiasis.

Abstract:
Abstract Effective evaluations of new programs can only be accomplished with monitoring equipment for corrosion, deposits, and bio-mass which simulate system conditions. A baseline performance must be developed on existing programs prior to new program evaluation. Monitoring must be rapid and sufficiently accurate to detect inadequate treatment program performance quickly before serious damage to the plant equipment. Pilot plant on-site cooling tower evaluations are preferable if systems cannot tolerate damage due to inadequate performance of new programs. New programs must be analyzed and compared to system needs to determine whether they should be evaluated. Case histories are given.

Abstract:
Abstract Currently, most cooling water treatment programs utilize phosphate for corrosion control and apply scale inhibitor to reduce the potential calcium phosphate deposition on heat exchangers. A non -phosphorus program would reduce or eliminate the need for calcium phosphate scale inhibitor and reduce phosphorus nutrient feed to the system, which would control bio-growth. However, the existing non-phosphorus programs for cooling water treatment often have disadvantages such as poor mild steel corrosion control, limited operation window, and high treatment cost. This paper describes a newly developed non-phosphorus program to solve these challenges. This novel program is a blend of proprietary scale and corrosion inhibitors. It provides excellent anodic and cathodic corrosion control of mild steel in a variety of water matrices (from soft water to high chloride water), and it widens the operation window by providing superior calcium carbonate inhibition and eliminating calcium phosphate scale. The non-P program showed great corrosion and scale control performance when evaluated at a steel mill and a power plant.

Abstract:
This paper aims to share the experience of a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) on urban planning carried out in a school of architecture in Spain (Institution 1) during the academic year 2023-24. Within the Erasmus+ framework, BIPs are exchange programmes for students and staff of European universities that are characterised by being intensive and blended. The European Commission considers these programmes to be a means of educational and teaching innovation with two main aspects to highlight. On the one hand, they are programmes that promote transdisciplinary and transnational cooperation thanks to their relatively quick and simple management. On the other hand, their hybrid format and short duration facilitate access to international exchange for a greater number and diversity of profiles within the educational community. With regard to the teaching of architecture and urban planning, the experience of Institution 1 seems to indicate that this format is particularly well suited to these disciplines. Projects and case studies, common working methodologies in architecture curricula, are in line with the BIP approach. They allow for intensive work, i.e. work is done in a limited way, based on a contextualised problem, and the degree of definition of the solutions expected from the students can be established more concretely according to the framework and the profile of the participants. On the other hand, the very nature of architectural disciplines favours and requires multidisciplinary work, especially in the case of urban planning. Institution 1 is the institution to which most BIPs have taken place in the whole university to which it belongs. The Department that led the experience that is the subject of this paper had already participated in BIPs and is currently involved in three exchanges of this type. The exchange programme that is the focus of this paper involved two other European institutions: one Austrian (Institution 2) and one German (Institution 3). The consortium was based on other types of previous collaborations on the part of the teaching staff, but mainly on the conviction that transnationality and interdisciplinarity are two indispensable skills in the current training in urban planning. Institutions 1, 2 and 3 represent three different geographical contexts and also three different urban planning traditions and cultures. Furthermore, from the point of view of multidisciplinarity, each institution specialises in a distinct area within the disciplines of planning and design of the built environment. Institution 1 is particularly specialised in urban form, a spatial design approach with a strong emphasis on architecture and the composition of urban fabrics. Institution 2 focuses its training from a landscape perspective and works more intensively on territorial scale and environmental issues. Institution 3, on the other hand, is closer to civil engineering, with a focus on constructive and technical aspects. The profile of the three institutions shaped the theme and approach of the programme. The consortium proposed an exchange focused on mutual learning through interdisciplinarity and multiculturalism. To this end, a three-year horizon was designed in which each institution would lead a call and be responsible for the general design of the programme and for hosting the rest of the consortium in its city during the face-to-face exchange phase. Institution 1 led the first edition based on a 3.5 ECTS programme combining a week of face-to-face exchange in the city of Valencia and three online seminars. During the months of October, November and December 2023 the students of the three institutions worked on different issues and through different tasks. Each institution began by studying the main urban planning frameworks of their cities and regions with the aim of familiarising themselves with the urban planning regulations and strategies in their context and also in the rest of the consortium. Subsequently, a district of the city of Valencia was chosen, which would constitute the working environment for the rest of the exchange, both during the face-to-face phase and in the remaining virtual seminars. This work was carried out in groups made up of students from each institution (mixed groups) in which each student contributed their knowledge and skills to a common project. These projects had to propose an urban improvement solution that had to respond to the parameters of sustainability, focusing on some of the most relevant issues for the neighbourhood scale: housing, local facilities, green infrastructure and active mobility. The results of the first edition of this BIP have been very positive. The students improved their skills thanks to the exchange with students of different profiles and were able to develop a quality project in reduced time thanks to the intensive format. The students' evaluation concludes a high degree of satisfaction and learning, not only with regard to their training as future urban planners, but also on a personal level. The second edition of the programme is currently being planned and will be coordinated by Institution 2 in autumn 2024.

Abstract:
Energy efficiency in the built environment has been adopted through several initiatives depending on the context of implementation; this paper further assesses Building Information Modelling (BIM) as a toolkit designed to tackle energy-related concerns in buildings. The paper leverages energy efficiency program cases of the gulf countries’ level of BIM adoption. This case study design was qualitatively approached in which literature and authoritative contents were reviewed to ascertain the region’s adoption of the technology as a body Gulf Cooperation Council. (GCC) and independently as a country (member states). It was identified that only Saudi Arabia and the UAE have BIM tied to their energy efficiency programs, unlike other member states that have energy efficiency programs with little or no trace of BIM. The GCC management committee is therefore saddled with the responsibility of implementing BIM. Utilizing BIM for sustainability will lead to significant savings through a combination of accurate energy monitoring, immediate decision support systems, actuators, and consumption form recognition.

Abstract:
This article examines the evolving student and academic staff mobility trends and the impact of a new form of international cooperation on learning outcomes. European universities are increasingly using different forms of Erasmus+ mobilities types, which is facilitating a transformational shift towards short-term, mixed, and virtual mobility for European students, accompanied by the establishment of internationalisation standards and the development of initiatives in borderless learning joint planning of educational programs with partner institutions as well as implementation of pilot projects, testing and exchange of the most successful practices. The article discloses successful practices and experiences developed and gained through international cooperation, focusing on the results of the Erasmus+ blended intensive programme (BIP) projects implemented in 2023, which aimed to develop innovative teaching methods and update existing teaching materials. By highlighting the contributions of these projects, the article highlights the critical role that Erasmus+ BIP initiatives play in shaping the future of education through cross-border collaboration and knowledge sharing.

&#x0D; O BIM - Building Information Modeling, tem crescido em termos de demanda dentro da indústria da construção e provado ser uma tendência e ferramenta útil neste setor. As instituições de ensino superior, que oferecem engenharia civil e educação na área de gestão, buscam incorporar competências e habilidades de BIM em seus programas de graduação. No entanto, apenas algumas universidades já introduziram conteúdos de BIM nos currículos dos alunos de engenharia civil e arquitetura e urbanismo. Este artigo relata o processo realizado para integrar o BIM, o compartilhamento de informações e o projeto colaborativo no currículo de graduação do Curso de Engenharia Civil do Centro Universitário do Instituto Mauá de Engenharia. Uma análise crítica deste estudo de caso foi realizada e apresenta lições aprendidas sobre a adoção do BIM. Um mecanismo de “feedback” foi aplicado para verificar as experiências dos alunos em relação a este programa. É importante que o princípio do BIM seja integrado na formação de futuros profissionais da construção.&#x0D;

Abstract:
In this paper, the author has aimed to assess the postgraduate programs offered for international students in selected Australian universities particularly the program, instructions and research. The study adopted the exploratory sequential mixed methods. It involves international postgraduate students studying for their master’s through coursework, research and PhD. The following were findings of the study: This study evaluated the satisfaction levels of 173 international postgraduate students, predominantly enrolled in master’s programs across three Australian universities: USyd, UTS, and UNSW. The author has shown that the findings underscore that Australian universities provide well-structured programs with strong academic support and career services. However, employment-related assistance for international students needs to be improved. The author has concluded with recommendations that include expanding work opportunities, offering more support for students balancing employment, and redefining program requirements for full-time employees. Overall, the study suggests that Australian universities effectively meet international postgraduate students' academic and professional needs, though room for improvement remains in career support.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the areas and populations served by three USDA rural broadband programs-- the Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP), the Community Connect grant program, and the ReConnect program. BIP was the largest of these programs (through fiscal year 2021) in terms of net obligations and population in areas served (more than 1.3 percent of the U.S. population). However, BIP projects had the smallest value of obligations per person ($875 in 2020 dollars) and per square mile of approved project service areas ($26,000 in 2020 dollars). The populations served by all three programs tended to be more rural, less educated, poorer, and older than those in areas not served (for BIP) or ineligible (for Community Connect and ReConnect). All programs reached a larger share of the American Indian/ Alaska Native (AIAN) and White populations than other races and a larger share of the non-Hispanic than Hispanic population. A larger share of the AIAN population was served by Community Connect and ReConnect because a larger share of the AIAN population was eligible. However, a smaller share of the eligible AIAN population lived in approved ReConnect project service areas than most other racial groups because a smaller share of eligible AIANs lived in areas that applied to ReConnect
