An intensive study was undertaken in order to isolate and identify bioactive compounds in bracken, Pteridium aquilinum (L.) Kuhn (Dennstaedtiaceae). Aspects of the toxicology of bracken (Pteridium aguilinum) were studied in sub-acute and chronic studies using male Wistar-albino rats. In a chronic study, bracken induced ileal adenomas in an 8.5 month period but after 24 months, no tumours were seen in both the quercetin- and shikimate-fed rats. Tissue ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) levels were enhanced over a 90-day test period when shikimate was fed alone or in conjunction with BBN and MNNG as initiators and with cyclophosphamide, saccharin and lithocholate as promoters, suggesting that shikimate might be a tumour promoter. Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico<br>The epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical and pathological aspects of the spontaneous and experimental poisoning of cattle by bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) were studied. Two scientific papers that stemmed from these studies are presented and discussed here. Initially, 6,256 necropsy reports from cattle necropsied during a de 43-year-period (1964-2006) were reviewed. Of those, 15 cases were consistent with acute poisoning caused by the ingestion of P. aquilinum and they occurred in cattle from small farms in the Central region
