Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF) on carious lesions of human deciduous teeth. Ten extracted deciduous incisors with caries were collected and treated with SDF. After the treatment, the teeth were sectioned through the center of the carious lesion. The extent of sliver precipitation was examined using quantitative backscattered electron scanning electron microscopy (qBSE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). The qBSE-SEM images revealed that the silver particles could penetrate through the pellicle complex, along with the rod sheaths into the demineralized enamel rods and the dentinal tubules, and form silver-enriched barriers surrounding the carious lesions at depths up to 2,490.2 μm (mean 744.7 ± 448.7 μm) within the dentinal tubules of the carious lesions, but less likely in the sound enamel. The EDX spectrum analysis revealed that carbon, oxygen, phosphorus, chlorine, silver, and calcium were the main elements detected in the lesions treated with SDF. Additionally, sodium, magnesium, aluminum, silicon, zinc, sulfur, and fluorine were detected as the minor elements within the SDF precipitation “zone.” The micro-CT analysis further showed that in the deep cavitated lesions, the silver precipitation could be observed in the pulp chamber. These findings provide new evidence defining the SDF mode of action for arresting caries and suggest that the application of a highly concentrated SDF solution on deciduous teeth should be used with caution for various carious lesions.

Abstract:
Previous studies have suggested that the mandible may be more influenced by mechanical loading than by circulating hormone levels. We tested the hypothesis that hypofunction has a greater influence than ovariectomy on mandibular bone. Two-month-old rats were ovariectomized (OVX) or had maxillary molars removed from one side to induce unilateral mandibular hypofunction. Control animals remained untreated. After 5 months, animals were killed, and bones were assessed by micro-tomography (μCT), quantitative back-scattered electron analysis in an SEM (qBSE-SEM), and light microscopy. Mineralization density was reduced in calvarial, maxillary, and mandibular alveolar bone following OVX, yet was increased in lingual mandibular alveolar bone of the hypo-function animals compared with controls. OVX caused a reduction in osteocyte density in alveolar bone, while hypofunction showed an increase compared with controls. Hypofunction led to alveolar bone becoming more highly mineralized and more cellular, while ovariectomy caused a reduction in both mineralization density and osteocyte numbers.

Abstract:
Due to the high cost of the qubit generating device (QGD) (the single photon source), QGD may not be available at the same time in both communicating parties (Alice and Bob) who have to execute the quantum bit string commitment (QBSC) protocol for some application environments. All the existing QBSC protocols allow one-way commitment i.e., only the party (Bob) who possesses the QGD is allowed to commit a bit string to Alice who does not have the QGD, but not the other way around. However, what happens if Alice, who does not have the QGD, is required to commit a bit string to Bob? The current QBSC protocols fail to provide a solution in this case. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to allow Alice, who is not equipped with the QGD, to commit a bit string to Bob who has the QGD. With our proposed protocol, together with previously proposed QBSC protocols, Alice and Bob can perform two-way commitment, even though Bob is the only party who is equipped with the QGD.

Abstract:
Spectra of quantum beats (QBs) of nuclear resonant forward scattering contain the interference information of all allowed energy transitions of a nucleus, which makes it complicated to extract hyperfine structure directly. Here, we propose a new method, based upon the extraction of prime beat components, to understand QBs. In this method, the origin of major spectral lines in the Fourier Transformation of QBs is studied, and the energy levels of hyperfine structure are obtained directly from the QBs. We applied this method to the temperature dependent QBs of hematite. The Morin temperature and hyperfine structure obtained by this method are in consistent with that by conventional Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS). It serves to interpret the components of QBs of nuclear resonant forward scattering as simple as the conventional (MS).

Abstract:
AbstractThe tropical Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) excites a northward propagating Rossby wave train that largely determines the extratropical surface weather consequences of the MJO. Previous work has demonstrated a significant influence of the tropospheric El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the characteristics of this wave train. Here, composite analyses of ERA-Interim sea level pressure (SLP) and surface air temperature (SAT) data during the extended northern winter season are performed to investigate the additional role of stratospheric forcings [the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) and the 11-yr solar cycle] in modifying the wave train and its consequences. MJO phase composites of 20–100-day filtered data for the two QBO phases show that, similar to the cool phase of ENSO, the easterly phase of the QBO (QBOE) produces a stronger wave train and associated modulation of SLP and SAT anomalies. In particular, during MJO phases 5–7, positive SLP and negative SAT anomalies in the North Atlantic/Eurasian sector are enhanced during QBOE relative to the westerly phase of the QBO (QBOW). The opposite occurs during the earliest MJO phases. SAT anomalies over eastern North America are also more strongly modulated during QBOE. Although less certain because of the short data record, there is some evidence that the minimum phase of the solar cycle (SMIN) produces a similar increased modulation of SLP and SAT anomalies. The strongest modulations of SLP and SAT anomalies are produced when two or more of the forcings are superposed (e.g., QBOE/cool ENSO, SMIN/QBOE, etc.).

Abstract:
Purpose: To evaluate a simple method for quantification of focal activity in bone scintigraphy (BS). Material and Methods: The gamma camera was calibrated using a phantom. Quantitative bone scintigraphy (QBS) was performed on 11 men recently diagnosed with prostate cancer (PCa), for whom routine BS showed involvement of the skeleton. Following endocrine therapy for 4 to 8 months, a second QBS was performed. Changes in QBS values were then compared to changes in serum levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Results: PSA response indicating regression of PCa was accompanied by a decrease in the QBS value in 8 of the 11 patients. The overall mean error of the QBS values was 15%. Conclusion: QBS according to this method is a relatively simple procedure that might contribute to objective evaluation of therapeutic effects in skeletal metastases, although its validity must be tested in a larger clinical material.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Práce začíná popisem metody kvantitativního STEM (qSTEM), kde lze stanovenou lokální tloušťku vzorku dát do spojitosti s ozářenou dávkou, a vytvořit tak studii úbytku hmoty. V rámci této části jsou diskutovány a demonstrovány možnosti kalibračního procesu detektoru, nezbytné pozadí Monte Carlo simulací elektronového rozptylu a dosažitelná přesnost metody. Navíc jsou v práci prezentovány korelativní aplikace konvenčních a komerčně dostupných kvantitativních technik katodoluminiscence (CL) a rentgenové energiově disperzní spektroskopie (EDX) spolu s vysokorozlišovacími obrazy vytvořenými pomocí sekundárních a prošlých elektronů.

Abstract:
The growth of multimedia content in recent years motivated the research on audio classification and content retrieval area. In this thesis, a general environmental audio classification and retrieval approach is proposed in which higher level semantic classes (outdoor, nature, meeting and violence) are obtained from lower level acoustic classes (emergency alarm, car horn, gun-shot, explosion, automobile, motorcycle, helicopter, wind, water, rain, applause, crowd and laughter). In order to classify an audio sample into acoustic classes, MPEG-7 audio features, Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) feature and Zero Crossing Rate (ZCR) feature are used with Hidden Markov Model (HMM) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers. Additionally, a new classification method is proposed using Genetic Algorithm (GA) for classification of semantic classes. Query by Example (QBE) and keyword-based query capabilities are implemented for content retrieval.

碩士<br>國立中山大學<br>應用數學研究所<br>83<br>A multimedia database (denoted as MMDB) management system manages multimedia data, where multimedia data is defined as any combination ofdata in the form of text, images (digitized images and complex vector graphics drawings), animation, sound and video. Due to these complex combination of different types of data, and many special properties of multimedia applications, traditional record-based DBMS techniques are not effective and not powerful enough to support those multimedia applications. In this thesis, we design and implement a QBOE (Query-By-Object-Example) multimedia database system (MMDB). Our system is based on an object-oriented model. In this version of QBOE MMDB, we consider only three types of media: text, graph and image. The query language is called Query-By- Object-Example, since either DDL (Data Definition Language) or DML (Data Manipulation language) is through an object example. In the part of DDL, the user can specify the prototype of a multimedia application, including the specific keywords for the application and related operations. In the part of DML, the user can access data by keywords or contents which are specified in attributes. Based on well-trained knowledge about X-lib (for X Window System), database systems and image processing, we have developed a user-friendly interface for QBOE MMDB.

碩士<br>國立清華大學<br>資訊系統與應用研究所<br>97<br>We introduce two methods for improving melody recognition rate by filtering bad queries in query by singing/humming (QBSH) system. One is “Filtration using Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM)”, and the other is “Filtration using features”. “Filtration using GMM” involves training a GMM by our discovered features and using the trained GMM to compute log-likelihood ratio to decide the threshold of filtration. “Filtration using features” directly uses the results of each feature to choose thresholds to reject bad queries. The value of a threshold is decided by the sum of false rejection rate and false acceptance rate. In this paper, we use three melody recognition methods, which are linear scaling (LS), dynamic time warping (DTW), and the combination of LS and DTW, to recognize songs from the position of head or anywhere. We use five features: mean volume, mean pitch, mean clarity, mean ratio of pitch, and number of frames. The training data and test data are derived from the results of melody recognition methods. Because too high rejective rate may cause unfriendly feeling to users, we only took the results with rejection rate under 30% in our experiment. The results show that the both proposed systems improve at least 1% recognition rate for each melody recognition method. The best result improves 6.45% recognition rate with 14.01% rejection rate by filtration using GMM to reject the songs recognized by LS from the position of anywhere. Our proposed methods successfully accomplish the elimination of bad queries and improve the recognition rate at a certain degree.

Abstract:
碩士<br>輔仁大學<br>資訊工程學系<br>93<br>In the post-genome era, the research issues of bioinformatics have also been addressed on handling and processing experimental data with complex facets, such as protean, microarray, and metabolic pathway. Regarding the pathway, those ongoing retrieval systems for such kind of network-like data, e.g., KEGG, are usually designed as the keyword-based retrieval system, in which compounds and/or enzymes are specified as the query predicates. However, such kind of keyword-based retrieval systems are neither friendly for naive users, nor powerful for experienced users. In this paper, we design a content-based retrieval system for metabolic pathway, in which the search predicates are specified in the way of query-by-example (QBE). First, we propose a relational schema to model the network-like experimental data, i.e., metabolic pathway. Based on the data model, all the user queries are classified into four types with the chemical network and the enzyme network, respectively. With our well-designed QBE interface, four kinds of visual query with various icons are designed to pose the user queries. To efficiently resolve user queries, the query processing algorithms and corresponding index structure are also proposed for all types of queries, respectively. Finally, we implement the QBE retrieval system to demonstrate our proposed retrieval system.

Abstract:
Treatment of disc degeneration and subsequent device interfacing in the spine are limited by a poor understanding of the mechanics of the bone-cartilage interface between vertebral bodies (VB) and the intervertebral disc (IVD). Additionally, tissue engineering strategies are under investigation despite a lack of information on the structure of the developing interface and mechanical properties during endochondral ossification. Fetal tissue provides an initial reference to study the developing mineralization patterns and mechanical property gradient at the transition between mineralized and soft tissues. Through nanoindentation, quantitative back scattered electron microscopy (qBSE) (Ferguson 2003) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), it is possible to study mineralized tissue formation from both mechanical and compositional perspectives at scales relevant to the mechanics of the interface.

Abstract:
We introduce the query-by-example (QBE) paradigm for query answering in the presence of ontologies. Intuitively, QBE permits non-expert users to explore the data by providing examples of the information they (do not) want, which the system then generalizes into a query. Formally, we study the following question: given a knowledge base and sets of positive and negative examples, is there a query that returns all positive but none of the negative examples? We focus on description logic knowledge bases with ontologies formulated in Horn-ALCI and (unions of) conjunctive queries. Our main contributions are characterizations, algorithms and tight complexity bounds for QBE.
