Abstract:
The intellectual development in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) could be generally divided into two phases, with the first one inherited from the Han Wei period focusing on the meaning of words, while the second phase focuses on the teaching of the Confucian classics. Among the various scholars during the course of this transformation, Dan Zhu (啖助,724-770) has been recognized as a non-mainstream but yet very influential character. To avoid the An-Shi Rebellion, Dan Zhu resided in the south-eastern part of the country where he taught Lu Chun (陸淳) the Chun Qiu (春秋) classic. Many famous Tang political reformers including Lu Wen (呂溫) and Liu Zong Yuan (柳宗元) are considered by historians as Dan Zhu’s students and followers. This has made Dan Zhu even more influential than other Confucius scholars in that period. Nevertheless, due to the controversial nature of his teachings, Dan Zhu was heavily criticized by Ouyang Xiu (歐陽修) as being specious and at the same time appraised by Cheng Yi (程頤) to be one of the fore-runners who founded the Song Confucianism. This research reveals that Dan Zhu abandons the approach of focusing on the meaning wording and goes directly into the teachings of the classics. He considers that there are large amount of mistakes in the then contemporary explanation of Chun Qiu, he also considers that Tang scholars have not just worked in isolation without much view sharing, but also misinterpreted Confucius’ teachings. Moreover, the Tang scholars are treating Chun Qiu as history or even as literature, rather than Confucius’ teaching on how the society should be run. From Dan Zhu’s perspective, Confucius was trying to make use of histories to set proper behavioural standards and protocols for running the country, with an objective of saving the imperial control of Zhou (周). During the mid-Tang period, China was undergoing major social changes from a feudal to a modern society. Tang imperials whose ancestors carried a nomadic blood stream tried to strengthen their control by adopting Confucianism; and placing more emphasis on the south-eastern region where the Han Chinese of the Southern Dynasty was concentrated. Coupling with the civil examination (科舉) reform and the impacts of Zen Buddhism, the Tang society was undergoing major social-political transformation which Dan Zhu was situated right on its course. The research concludes that Dan Zhu’s ideas fit well with Xuan-zong’s (唐玄宗) appeal for revival of Confucius teachings and the social-political setting in Mid-Tang. Although Dan Zhu is considered a non-mainstream scholar, his teachings have brought about significant impacts on later development of the Neo-Confucianism. Nonetheless, Dan Zhu has not deviated from the fundamental principles of a Confucian whose destiny is to serve the people and the country, and of course for Dan Zhu, the Tang Dynasty.
published_or_final_version
Chinese
Master
Master of Philosophy

Gary, Julie.

Abstract:
In third-century China, the huge political and intellectual mutations occurring after the collapse of the Han dynasty result in the awakening of a new self-consciousness of man and the emergence of new philosophical trends (the so called Dark Learning), or also an artistic activity breaking off with four centuries of Confucian orthodoxy. Music, which occupies a privileged position in the life of literati, evolves as well, as far as its traditional status and practice are both concerned. No more considered a tool of moralization for the sake of civilized order or social harmony, it becomes a private and free distraction, emancipated from political or any other pragmatic purpose. The conceptions of music appearing in this context of nascent aesthetics provide the subject matter of our research. Focusing on Ruan Ji 阮籍 (210-263) and Ji Kang 嵇康 (223-262), two leading figures of the well-known literati group “the Seven Sages of the bamboo grove” who were also famous poets, thinkers and musicians, we attempt to examine their aesthetic thought throughout their main writings on music, concerning issues such as the origins and nature of music, its moral or social functions, its political or macrobiotic use, its ethical or dietetic virtues, and also its relation to man’s emotions. The textual analysis is completed by the study of musical practices or gestures (Ruan Ji’s whistling, Ji Kang’s playing the zither), that illustrate the effective application of their ideas in concrete life. Therefore, aesthetics does not only consist in a mere discourse, but becomes a kind of ethos, in which the emancipation of music is inseparable from that of the individual himself, through his aesthetic experience

Fagundes, Ricardo Augusto Lopes.

Full text
Abstract:
Falls in the elderly is a significant problem in public health, since this type of accident can result in fractures, decreased mobility and increased mortality. In this context, the Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) can be seen as a promising body practice in Primary Health Care (PHC). In this dissertation, two articles have been produced. In the first article, we evaluated the relationship between the practice of TCC, as a group activity in a Health Unit in static and dynamic balance in elderly people. In order for this to happen, 80 community elderly (≥ 60 years) were invited to participate in interviews and evaluations of balance and as well as in a TCC group (convenience sample). Participants were evaluated before and six months after the training of “24 simplified TCC forms” (based on Yang style), 1x/week. The 19 people who attended ≥ 8 classes were considered practitioners. During the study, 26 lessons were conducted, with an average of 18 participants. There was an improvement of approximately two points on the Berg scale of balance performance (p <0.001) in the group of practitioners and 100% of these, either maintained or improved their previous scores. This is one of the first evaluations of the practice of TCC within the PHC, in Brazil. In the second article (an experience report) we described the necessary conditions for the practice of TCC and the training program in detail. In conclusion, TCC is a body practice that is used to promote health. We believe it is possible its insertion into the PHC bringing thus benefits in improving balance of older adults.

Abstract:
In tracing the experience of Chinese Canadians in the 20th Century, we need to look further back into its history. Most people believe that the increasing number of immigrants from Hong Kong, Taiwan and China in the 1980s and 1990s played the most important roles in the social and economic changes during the latest decades of the 20th Century. The contribution of the Chinese Canadians settlement throughout the 20th Century should also be considered as it marks the beginning of the rise of their social status and identity in Canada. Although the Chinese Canadians earned their fame and status since the 1980s, they had been racially discriminated for more than a century. To probe into the situation, the social and political situations in the Chinese Canadian community will be meticulously analyzed and their contribution in difference aspects examined. In addition, other minority ethnic groups, such as the Japanese, Jewish and Indian, will be used as a comparison to demonstrate the change of policies towards the Chinese in Canada. In doing so, both English and Canadian Chinese newspapers will be used to illustrate the cultural difference between the “whites” and “non-whites”. To illustrate the changes, the 20th Century will be break into three parts. In most of the pre-Second World War period, the Chinese community was isolated from the mainstream community with their activities largely confined to Chinatowns in cities, such as Vancouver, Victoria, Toronto and so on. For the Chinese living in small townships, such as Prince Rupert, Richmond and so on, their daily life will also be examined. When Canada declared war on Japan on 7th December 1941, Canada became an ally of China during the war. A sentiment of acceptance of the Chinese in the mainstream society began to take shape. Some of the Chinese chose to contribute their efforts to Canada by joining the Canadian Armed Forces and went into battle alongside the White Canadians. After the Second World War, Canada adopted a new policy towards the minority ethnic groups and Chinese Canadians started to enjoy political equality. In May 1947, the Canadian Government repealed the Chinese Immigration Act. In 1967, after the liberalization of the Canadian immigration policy, the Chinese, once again, were allowed to immigrate freely to Canada as an individual. With granted full citizenship, the Chinese social and political status began to change. In 1957, Douglas Jung, a Canadian born Chinese, was elected a Member of the Parliament, which can be seen as the beginning of the Chinese involvement in the political arena of the Canadian community. Since then, Chinese Canadians were able to achieve equality in the society. Based on documentary accounts and oral history research, this thesis re-constructed the history of Canadian Chinese involvement in the 20th Century and the change of their identity and social status thereafter.
published_or_final_version
Social Work and Social Administration
Doctoral
Doctor of Philosophy

Abstract:
91
Integrated with the study of Chinese Classics, the Ch’en-wei thoughts posed as the mainstream of East Han’s philosophy studies but the thoughts also aroused different opinions. As early as in the beginning of West Han Dynasty, Liu Shin tried to oppose the studies of Modern Scripts with the studies of Ancient Scripts. Yang Xiong, a great thinker in late West Han Dynasty, tried to suppress the popularity of superstition with the concept of Dao Fa Zi Ran (meaning that Daoism lies in the Nature). In the beginning of East Han Dynasty, Heng Tan is the first thinker who openly criticized the official philosophy. He wrote “Xing Lun” to declare his opposition against the dominant Ch’en-wei thoughts and also offered suggestions about contemporary politics in the hope of attracting attention from the Emperor and serving the country. However, his suggestions irritated the Emperor instead and he was never promoted to an important position. After Heng Tan, Wang Chong, a thinker not in any official post, carried forward Heng’s thoughts and, based on the principle of Ji Xu Wang (meaning to criticize the untrue), lashed even more strongly against the Ch’en-wei thoughts. This thesis is an attempt to analyze Heng’s and Wang’s thoughts based on their books, “Xing Lun” and “Lun Heng.” It is found that both of them, enlightened by rationalism and spurred by the sense of mission as orthodox scholars, tried to fight against the contemporary Boshi system on the basis of Bo Tong (meaning comprehensive studies), to criticize the ridiculousness of the Ch’en-wei thoughts by manifesting the principle of Ji Xu Wang and finally to achieve the ideal of Xing Zhi (meaning to criticize the untrue and to serve the country with one’s thoughts). Both Heng and Wang cast a deep influence on the Ming-Fa thoughts at the end of East Han Dynasty and gave birth to the following Naturalism. Their importance to the development of Chinese philosophy can be clearly seen hereby.

Abstract:
105
Abstract This thesis A Study on Hunag Yi’s “Xun Qin Ji” aims to offer an overview on Hunag Yi’s scientific narrative in the history of martial arts novel. He employs the finesse of time-travel, depicting the contemporary travel though time back to the past and weaving the historical facts into the plots. Such innovation is a giant breakthrough in the domain of martial arts novel. Hung Yi’s creativity is unprecedented—He is the first-ever author in the field to introduce technological prediction of traveling through time and to combine the martial arts plot. He also gets rid of the traditional elements of using supernatural power, which is common in conventional martial arts novel. Because of his groundbreaking initiation, many novelists followed this presentation of time-travel. Owing to the above-mentioned reasons, the researcher of this thesis wishes to explore Hunag Yi’s “Xun Qin Ji” in the following aspects: its author, the background, the motif, the writing technique, and so on. The researcher hopes that analyzing this novel presents the turning point of how Hunag Yi transcends the obsolete martial arts novel and provides the later-on researchers with the inspiration of grandmaster Hunag Yi.
