Abstract:
Today, there are many different ways to handle physical access control. RFID cards and tags are still a major solution but during the last years the market have been focusing on taking advantage of the devices that most people always carry with them, such as smartphones, tablets or smartwatches. This thesis has been carried out together with the company BRP Systems. They develop and deliver business systems to mainly the fitness business. In their product suite there is an application for booking workout sessions at these facilities. In this thesis their booking application has been rebuilt as a prototype and the functionality of unlocking the door and checking into workout sessions has been added. The application has been developed in React Native for Android and has been implemented in three versions using different techniques to sensor the users position at the door. The techniques are iBeacon, GPS and QR code. The iBeacon- and GPS versions work by allowing the user to unlock the door when standing outside it. A local notification will be pushed if the application is in the background. The QR code version allows the user to scan a QR code at the door to unlock it. When the door has been unlocked the users can also check into their booked workout sessions. The system and the different versions have been tested at one of BRP Systems customers to evaluate the usability. The conclusion is that an application with high usability can be built with all tested techniques in React Native. For the system to be used several other factors such as security and maintenance has to be considered. The choice to use React Native might be of high risk since it is a relatively new framework relying on community developed libraries.

Abstract:
Context. Volvo Construction Equipment is planning to use Microsoft Hololens as a tool for the on-site manager to keep a track on the automotive machines and obtain their corresponding work information. For that, a miniature site has been build at PDRL BTH consisting of three different automotive vehicles. We are developing Augmented Reality applications for Microsoft Hololens to recognize these automotive vehicles. There is a need to identify the most feasible recognition method that can be implemented using Microsoft Hololens. Objectives. In this study, we investigate which among the Vuforia 3-D recognition method and the feasible method is best suited for the Microsoft Hololens and we also find out the maximum distance at which an automotive vehicle can be recognized by the Microsoft Hololens. Methods. In this study, we conducted a literature review and the number of articles has been reviewed for IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, Google Scholar and Scopus sources. Seventeen articles were selected for review after reading their titles and abstracts of articles obtained from the search. Two experiments were performed to find out the best recognition method of the Microsoft Hololens and the maximum distance at which an automotive vehicle can be recognized by the Microsoft Hololens. Results. QR-code recognition method is the best recognition method to be used by Microsoft Hololens for recognizing automotive vehicles in the range of one to two feet and Vuforia 3-D recognition method is recommended for more than two feet distance. Conclusions. We conclude that the QR-code recognition method is suitable for recognizing vehicles in the close range (1-2 feet) and Vuforia 3-D object recognition is suitable for recognition for distance over two feet. These two methods are different from each other. One used the 3-D scan of the vehicle to recognize the vehicle and the other uses image recognition (using unique QR-codes). We covered effect of distance on the recognition capability of the application and a lot of work has to be done in terms of how does the QR-code size effects the maximum distance at which an automotive vehicle can be recognized. We conclude that there is a need for further experimentation in order to find out the impact of QR-code size on the maximum recognition distance.

Generally speaking, users do not know the information encoded with a QR code, thus, are not capable of detecting malicious attacks. Therefore, there is a need for verifying the integrity of QR codes. In this paper, we revise the software code that is used to encode plaintexts into QR codes and to decode QR codes back to plaintexts, and add to it the capability for integrity verification. The international standard ISO18004 provides us with a basis for this software project. Our approach, in comparison with a previous work, can be called an integrated approach, as we add the capability of integrity verification directly into the encoding and decoding code itself.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立成功大學<br>工程科學系專班<br>98<br>This thesis proposes to replace the conventional marker of Augmented Reality (AR) with the QR Code pattern and we design and implement a prototype AR system named QRAR (Quick Response Code with Augmented Reality) from scratch. The system has several advantages, compared with traditional black-square-boarder tags. These advantages are: (1) better error correction to reinforce occlusion immunity, (2) the ability of embedding much more information into the code, (3) users do not have to predefine markers and train their AR programs to recognize their markers in advance, and (4) It is also possible to modify (part of) information of makers without recompiling AR programs. In addition, we introduce Kalman filter to solve the marker occlusion issue. The prototype of AR system uses the QR decoder which feeds back the information contained in the QR Code. The other major part of tasks in our prototype is to track the tilt angle and position of the marker with three bull-eye patterns which are the significant features of QR Code, related to the real world coordinate system. After that, we use part of the information contained in the QR Code to determine which virtual object we are about to draw and use the transformation matrix to make the virtual object in line with the tilt angle and position of the marker in the real world coordinate system. Our proposed system makes it possible to have applications fetch dynamic data from DB servers in the Intranet/Internet. Based on this, we implement a new application which could show a passport owner’s 3D image, assuming that a QR Code is attached with the passport, and our AR application can archive the image, stored in an internet database, identified by the QR Code.

Reading and decoding pictures of QR Code by a capture device and then transmits voice according to the voice database. We adopt a CMOS Image Sensor as an image capture interface. The CMOS Image Sensor delivers applicable images by setting internal registers of a CMOS Image Sensor. Then resolution of an image affects the picture readability, therefore the larger the resolution is, the clear it is. We must consider the demand of the buffer memory for resolution''s size in order to implement the system by hardware circuits, therefore adopts the 176x144 QCIF. Not only the resolution satisfies the system’s require, but also the memory is controlled under 512K bits. Thesis adopts Altera CPLD chip as the control center. The capture images are stored in the memory buffer and then transmitted images to a PC to decode by a UART interface. Finally, the experiment result shows that the data capacity of QR Code and the picture size decoded are the direct ratio relations. And the data capacity within 40 letters can correctly be decoded in two centimeters square pictures sizes.

碩士<br>國立高雄第一科技大學<br>電腦與通訊工程研究所<br>99<br>The two-dimensional barcode has been used widely on smart phones now, such as ticket, Production records, Coupon etc. However, due to the limited capacity of barcode, we need to connect to the database on the internet to download the information when details are required. Thus, if we could store all the information in barcode, we could save more time by enforcing true off-line browsing. Through, this could cope with the restriction of network and other related issues. An important question need solving: how do we increase the capacity of barcode? In this paper, we develop a way to increase the capacity of the barcode. By color overlapping to generate the third dimension of barcode, capacity of barcode could be increased. However, we need to consider more issues about the color barcode. They are the Color temperature, color off-set, etc. Therefore, it’s our primary objective to trade off a balance among capacity, recognition rate and error correction rate. Using the color barcode we develop a system that enables us to store massive animation video. Through this system, the users could easily make a vivid animation.

碩士<br>國立嘉義大學<br>外國語言學系研究所<br>101<br>Reading performance of Taiwanese students is weaker compared to other Asian students, especially in reflection and evaluation aspects based on the results of PISA. As proposed from the previous studies, reading strategies are goal-oriented, specific behaviors and thoughts that readers generate to deal with comprehension difficulties. Compared to the previous strategic reading instruction, the strategic reading instruction with the QR codes support provided simultaneous practice of the reading strategies and helped the learners develop their self-regulated competence to learn or choose to learn the certain reading strategies. This current study aimed to investigate the effects of strategic reading instruction with the QR codes support on learners’ reading comprehension and their reading strategy use. A total of 43 undergraduate students from a university in southern Taiwan were involved in this study. The participants were divided into two groups, the experimental group with the QR codes support and the control group without the QR codes support. Both groups of the participants attended a five-week instructional intervention to learn and practice reading techniques with and without the QR codes support. Based on a mixed-methods research, the current study collected quantitative data from Task-based Reading Strategy Inventory (Task-based RSI) and reading comprehension assessment, and qualitative data from semi-structured interviews. Hence, the participants’ reading comprehension, reading strategy use and perception were investigated after the intervention. Compared to the traditional strategic reading instruction, the participants in the group with the QR codes support made a significance progress on their reading comprehension. Moreover, the participants started to cultivate their higher thinking process and try to switch their thinking patterns in English reading after receiving strategic reading instruction with the QR codes support. Further, the participants from both groups also developed self-regulated capacity in their reading process after they received strategic reading instruction.

Abstract:
The efficient high-throughput VLSI implementation of Soft-output MIMO detectors for high-order constellations and large antenna configurations has been a major challenge in the literature. This thesis introduces a novel Soft-output K-Best scheme that improves BER performance and reduces the computational complexity significantly by using three major improvement ideas. It also presents an area and power efficient VLSI implementation of a 4x4 64-QAM Soft K-Best MIMO detector that attains the highest detection throughput of 2 Gbps and second lowest energy/bit reported in the literature, fulfilling the aggressive requirements of emerging 4G standards such as IEEE 802.16m and LTE-Advanced. A low-complexity and highly parallel algorithm for QR Decomposition, an essential channel pre-processing task, is also developed that uses 2D, Householder 3D and 4D Givens Rotations. Test results for the QRD chip, fabricated in 0.13um CMOS, show that it attains the lowest reported latency of 144ns and highest QR Processing Efficiency.
