Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Through the ethnographic method, a fieldwork was conducted from April 2006 to February 2007, when I could observe the structure and organization of the club, the everyday life and the training systems, as well as, the some experts agencies of technoscience and biomedicine - doctors, physiotherapists, coaches and coach assistants, physiologist, physical trainers, nutritionists ... # about the bodies of athletes in the training center. This work is divided into three parts. In the first part, after discussing theoretical and methodological aspects of the thesis, I describe the physical and social space that the club occupies in the city and the relationships experienced by athletes at an institution that has characteristics similar to those of a "total institution". Also, I tried to understand the logic that governs the relationship when they are mediated by the abstract equivalence of money. The anatomo-policy and economic liberalism, among other issues, are the basis of these initial analyses. The second part of the thesis presents the procedures designed and made by biomedicine and technoscience; analyses the agencied machinery by the experts already cited and interprets, from the thesis of normalization of the species and the biopower, how the athletes live with the machines that write and form truths to invest their efforts investigated in the body. Thus, I ethnographied the physiotherapeutic and the medical practices, the work of the physiologist and the physical trainers, the technical and tactical training, and, the nutrition. The cyborg, the result of the technique - which discovers what is available - and of the science, is seen as linked to the machines of the training center by incorporating the procedures, the devices and objects that such machinery puts in action. This incorporation, however, announces the third part of the thesis, in which the incommensurability of the body (the human) is treated. Removing the focus of Foucault´s knowledge/power for the phenomenological being-in-the-world, I discuss, considering the "essential indeterminacy of the existence", the imponderables and the incommensurability of the body itself: this is likely to opening agency by the athletes. Back to the reflection about the body-machine, I say that the pain, the ilusio and the selfmoviment are enrolled in this inscribed area of the world that we live and that such orders of the experienced world are in the field of mimesis, of poiesis and esthesis, in other words, constitute themselves in time and space of creation, invention, in which what is new can germinate and the institutionalized social relationship in a structure in "unstable equilibrium" can be replaced by moments of comunnitas. Those aspects also suggests the fragmentation of the body and the practices through the technoscientific procedures, the terms in which an experience in Benjaminian sense, appear as a possible becoming, in view of considering the fundamental unit body-world, that the self-movement results in a dialogue through intercorporality and intersubjectivity. Finally, I conclude this supporting the thesis that the nature of the body itself is the starting point and the limit of the bodymachine relationship, as well as the anchorage that allows the cyborg, this being that incorporated the technoscience.

Abstract:
In the era of "big data revolution," marked by an exponential growth of information, extracting value from data enables analysts and businesses to address challenging problems such as drug discovery, fraud detection, and earthquake predictions. Multi-Criteria Decision Support (MCDS) queries are at the core of big-data analytics resulting in several classes of MCDS queries such as OLAP, Top-K, Pareto-optimal, and nearest neighbor queries. The intuitive nature of specifying multi-dimensional preferences has made Pareto-optimal queries, also known as skyline queries, popular. Existing skyline algorithms however do not address several crucial issues such as performing skyline evaluation over disparate sources, progressively generating skyline results, or robustly handling workload with multiple skyline over join queries. In this dissertation we thoroughly investigate topics in the area of skyline-aware query evaluation. In this dissertation, we first propose a novel execution framework called SKIN that treats skyline over joins as first class citizens during query processing. This is in contrast to existing techniques that treat skylines as an "add-on," loosely integrated with query processing by being placed on top of the query plan. SKIN is effective in exploiting the skyline characteristics of the tuples within individual data sources as well as across disparate sources. This enables SKIN to significantly reduce two primary costs, namely the cost of generating the join results and the cost of skyline comparisons to compute the final results. Second, we address the crucial business need to report results early; as soon as they are being generated so that users can formulate competitive decisions in near real-time. On top of SKIN, we built a progressive query evaluation framework ProgXe to transform the execution of queries involving skyline over joins to become non-blocking, i.e., to be progressively generating results early and often. By exploiting SKIN's principle of processing query at multiple levels of abstraction, ProgXe is able to: (1) extract the output dependencies in the output spaces by analyzing both the input and output space, and (2) exploit this knowledge of abstract-level relationships to guarantee correctness of early output. Third, real-world applications handle query workloads with diverse Quality of Service (QoS) requirements also referred to as contracts. Time sensitive queries, such as fraud detection, require results to progressively output with minimal delay, while ad-hoc and reporting queries can tolerate delay. In this dissertation, by building on the principles of ProgXe we propose the Contract-Aware Query Execution (CAQE) framework to support the open problem of contract driven multi-query processing. CAQE employs an adaptive execution strategy to continuously monitor the run-time satisfaction of queries and aggressively take corrective steps whenever the contracts are not being met. Lastly, to elucidate the portability of the core principle of this dissertation, the reasoning and query processing at different levels of data abstraction, we apply them to solve an orthogonal research question to auto-generate recommendation queries that facilitate users in exploring a complex database system. User queries are often too strict or too broad requiring a frustrating trial-and-error refinement process to meet the desired result cardinality while preserving original query semantics. Based on the principles of SKIN, we propose CAPRI to automatically generate refined queries that: (1) attain the desired cardinality and (2) minimize changes to the original query intentions. In our comprehensive experimental study of each part of this dissertation, we demonstrate the superiority of the proposed strategies over state-of-the-art techniques in both efficiency, as well as resource consumption.

Abstract:

Diante dessa determinações do habitus heteronormativo, os indivíduos desenvolvem recursos para seu enfrentamento, cuja aquisição de capital social apareceu como elemento central em sua vontade de criar meio de existir além do binarismo, como pessoas.<br><br>Abstract : Studies about violence have figured in a privileged way between academic agendas and the media because of its strong presence in society. As an aspect apparently ignored, symbolic violence is a constant element in the lives of LGBT people, by sanctions of heteronormativity and its charging of non-binary, with several manifestations in different environments. This study sought to identify the manifestations of symbolic violence experiences between LGBT college students, those identified and not as militants of the movement starting from their narratives. With these, We also attempted to gather the means of fighting symbolic violence developed to exist within a heteronormative habitus. Using Bourdieu s theoretical framework about symbolic violence and social capital for analysis, unstructured interviews were used on the life story of respondents, seeking experiences of symbolic violence and ways of standing up to against them developed , as social capital development. Violence showed up as a daily element in the life of both LGBT groups, manifested in different environments and institutions, with primacy in the family and school, since from the "little things of day-by-day" to even more direct forms of prejudice and discrimination which heteronormative content ridicules non-binary sexual orientations, and repress or delegitimize the expressions of sexualities in front of heterosexuals. Given these determinations of heteronormative habitus, individuals develop resources for their confrontation, the development of social capital appeared as a central element in their desire to create means to exist beyond the binary, as persons.

Maxwell, Kylie Tamsin. "Term selection in information retrieval." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/20389.

Abstract:
Systems trained on linguistically annotated data achieve strong performance for many language processing tasks. This encourages the idea that annotations can improve any language processing task if applied in the right way. However, despite widespread acceptance and availability of highly accurate parsing software, it is not clear that ad hoc information retrieval (IR) techniques using annotated documents and requests consistently improve search performance compared to techniques that use no linguistic knowledge. In many cases, retrieval gains made using language processing components, such as part-of-speech tagging and head-dependent relations, are offset by significant negative effects. This results in a minimal positive, or even negative, overall impact for linguistically motivated approaches compared to approaches that do not use any syntactic or domain knowledge. In some cases, it may be that syntax does not reveal anything of practical importance about document relevance. Yet without a convincing explanation for why linguistic annotations fail in IR, the intuitive appeal of search systems that ‘understand’ text can result in the repeated application, and mis-application, of language processing to enhance search performance. This dissertation investigates whether linguistics can improve the selection of query terms by better modelling the alignment process between natural language requests and search queries. It is the most comprehensive work on the utility of linguistic methods in IR to date. Term selection in this work focuses on identification of informative query terms of 1-3 words that both represent the semantics of a request and discriminate between relevant and non-relevant documents. Approaches to word association are discussed with respect to linguistic principles, and evaluated with respect to semantic characterization and discriminative ability. Analysis is organised around three theories of language that emphasize different structures for the identification of terms: phrase structure theory, dependency theory and lexicalism. The structures identified by these theories play distinctive roles in the organisation of language. Evidence is presented regarding the value of different methods of word association based on these structures, and the effect of method and term combinations. Two highly effective, novel methods for the selection of terms from verbose queries are also proposed and evaluated. The first method focuses on the semantic phenomenon of ellipsis with a discriminative filter that leverages diverse text features. The second method exploits a term ranking algorithm, PhRank, that uses no linguistic information and relies on a network model of query context. The latter focuses queries so that 1-5 terms in an unweighted model achieve better retrieval effectiveness than weighted IR models that use up to 30 terms. In addition, unlike models that use a weighted distribution of terms or subqueries, the concise terms identified by PhRank are interpretable by users. Evaluation with newswire and web collections demonstrates that PhRank-based query reformulation significantly improves performance of verbose queries up to 14% compared to highly competitive IR models, and is at least as good for short, keyword queries with the same models. Results illustrate that linguistic processing may help with the selection of word associations but does not necessarily translate into improved IR performance. Statistical methods are necessary to overcome the limits of syntactic parsing and word adjacency measures for ad hoc IR. As a result, probabilistic frameworks that discover, and make use of, many forms of linguistic evidence may deliver small improvements in IR effectiveness, but methods that use simple features can be substantially more efficient and equally, or more, effective. Various explanations for this finding are suggested, including the probabilistic nature of grammatical categories, a lack of homomorphism between syntax and semantics, the impact of lexical relations, variability in collection data, and systemic effects in language systems.

Abstract:
AbstractComputing path queries such as the shortest path in public transport networks is challenging because the path costs between nodes change over time. A reachability query from a node at a given start time on such a network retrieves all points of interest (POIs) that are reachable within a given cost budget. Reachability queries are essential building blocks in many applications, for example, group recommendations, ranking spatial queries, or geomarketing. We propose an efficient solution for reachability queries in public transport networks. Currently, there are two options to solve reachability queries. (1) Execute a modified version of Dijkstra’s algorithm that supports time-dependent edge traversal costs; this solution is slow since it must expand edge by edge and does not use an index. (2) Issue a separate path query for each single POI, i.e., a single reachability query requires answering many path queries. None of these solutions scales to large networks with many POIs. We propose a novel and lightweight reachability index. The key idea is to partition the network into cells. Then, in contrast to other approaches, we expand the network cell by cell. Empirical evaluations on synthetic and real-world networks confirm the efficiency and the effectiveness of our index-based reachability query solution.

Abstract:
AbstractLanguage-integrated query based on comprehension syntax is a powerful technique for safe database programming, and provides a basis for advanced techniques such as query shredding or query flattening that allow efficient programming with complex nested collections. However, the foundations of these techniques are lacking: although SQL, the most widely-used database query language, supports heterogeneous queries that mix set and multiset semantics, these important capabilities are not supported by known correctness results or implementations that assume homogeneous collections. In this paper we study language-integrated query for a heterogeneous query language $$\mathcal {NRC}_{\lambda }( Set,Bag )$$ NRC λ ( S e t , B a g ) that combines set and multiset constructs. We show how to normalize and translate queries to SQL, and develop a novel approach to querying heterogeneous nested collections, based on the insight that “local” query subexpressions that calculate nested subcollections can be “lifted” to the top level analogously to lambda-lifting for local function definitions.

Abstract:
AbstractWe present an algorithm to learn a deterministic timed automaton (DTA) via membership and equivalence queries. Our algorithm is an extension of the L* algorithm with a Myhill-Nerode style characterization of recognizable timed languages, which is the class of timed languages recognizable by DTAs. We first characterize the recognizable timed languages with a Nerode-style congruence. Using it, we give an algorithm with a smart teacher answering symbolic membership queries in addition to membership and equivalence queries. With a symbolic membership query, one can ask the membership of a certain set of timed words at one time. We prove that for any recognizable timed language, our learning algorithm returns a DTA recognizing it. We show how to answer a symbolic membership query with finitely many membership queries. We also show that our learning algorithm requires a polynomial number of queries with a smart teacher and an exponential number of queries with a normal teacher. We applied our algorithm to various benchmarks and confirmed its effectiveness with a normal teacher.

Abstract:
AbstractIn recent years, more people have seen their work depend on data manipulation tasks. However, many of these users do not have the background in programming required to write complex programs, particularly SQL queries. One way of helping these users is automatically synthesizing the SQL query given a small set of examples. Several program synthesizers for SQL have been recently proposed, but they do not leverage multicore architectures. This paper proposes Cubes, a parallel program synthesizer for the domain of SQL queries using input-output examples. Since input-output examples are an under-specification of the desired SQL query, sometimes, the synthesized query does not match the user’s intent. Cubes incorporates a new disambiguation procedure based on fuzzing techniques that interacts with the user and increases the confidence that the returned query matches the user intent. We perform an extensive evaluation on around 4000 SQL queries from different domains. Experimental results show that our parallel approach can scale up to 16 processes with super-linear speedups for many hard instances, and that our disambiguation approach is critical to achieving an accuracy of around 60%, significantly larger than other SQL synthesizers.

Abstract:
AbstractCustomer reviews are an effective source of information about what people deem important in products (e.g. “strong zipper” for tents). These crowd-created descriptors not only highlight key product attributes, but can also complement seller-provided product descriptions. Motivated by this, we propose to leverage customer reviews to generate queries pertinent to target products in an e-commerce setting. While there has been work on automatic query generation, it often relied on proprietary user search data to generate query-document training pairs for learning supervised models. We take a different view and focus on leveraging reviews without training on search logs, making reproduction more viable by the public. Our method adopts an ensemble of the statistical properties of review terms and a zero-shot neural model trained on adapted external corpus to synthesize queries. Compared to competitive baselines, we show that the generated queries based on our method both better align with actual customer queries and can benefit retrieval effectiveness.

Abstract:
AbstractInterprocedural data-flow analyses form an expressive and useful paradigm of numerous static analysis applications, such as live variables analysis, alias analysis and null pointers analysis. The most widely-used framework for interprocedural data-flow analysis is IFDS, which encompasses distributive data-flow functions over a finite domain. On-demand data-flow analyses restrict the focus of the analysis on specific program locations and data facts. This setting provides a natural split between (i) an offline (or preprocessing) phase, where the program is partially analyzed and analysis summaries are created, and (ii) an online (or query) phase, where analysis queries arrive on demand and the summaries are used to speed up answering queries. In this work, we consider on-demand IFDS analyses where the queries concern program locations of the same procedure (aka same-context queries). We exploit the fact that flow graphs of programs have low treewidth to develop faster algorithms that are space and time optimal for many common data-flow analyses, in both the preprocessing and the query phase. We also use treewidth to develop query solutions that are embarrassingly parallelizable, i.e. the total work for answering each query is split to a number of threads such that each thread performs only a constant amount of work. Finally, we implement a static analyzer based on our algorithms, and perform a series of on-demand analysis experiments on standard benchmarks. Our experimental results show a drastic speed-up of the queries after only a lightweight preprocessing phase, which significantly outperforms existing techniques.

Abstract:
AbstractIn model-driven engineering, runtime monitoring of systems with complex dynamic structures is typically performed via a runtime model capturing a snapshot of the system state: the model is represented as a graph and properties of interest as graph queries which are evaluated over the model online. For temporal properties, history-aware runtime models encode a trace of timestamped snapshots, which is monitored via temporal graph queries. In this case, the query evaluation needs to consider that a trace may be incomplete, thus future changes to the model may affect current answers. So far there is no formal foundation for query-based monitoring over runtime models encoding incomplete traces. In this paper, we present a systematic and formal treatment of incomplete traces. First, we introduce a new definite semantics for a first-order temporal graph logic which only returns answers if no future change to the model will affect them. Then, we adjust the query evaluation semantics of a querying approach we previously presented, which is based on this logic, to the definite semantics of the logic. Lastly, we enable the approach to keep to its efficient query evaluation technique, while returning (the more costly) definite answers.

Abstract:
Recently there has been a strong interest in using semantic technologies to improve information management in the construction domain. Ontologies provide a formalized domain knowledge representation that provides a structured information model to facilitate information management issues such as formalization and integration of construction workflow information and data and enables further applications such as information retrieval and reasoning. SPARQL Protocol And RDF Query Language (SPARQL) queries are the main approaches to conduct the information retrieval from the Resource Description Framework (RDF) format data. However, there is a barrier for end users to develop the SPARQL queries, as it requires proficient skills to code them. This challenge hinders the practical application of ontology-based approaches on construction sites. As a generative language model, ChatGPT has already illustrated its capability to process and generate human-like text, including the capability to generate the SPARQL for domain-specific tasks. However, there are no specific tests evaluating and assessing the SPARQL-generating capability of ChatGPT within the construction domain. Therefore, this paper focuses on exploring the usage of ChatGPT with a case of importing the Digital Construction Ontologies (DiCon) and generating SPARQL queries for specific construction workflow information retrieval. We evaluate the generated queries with metrics including syntactical correctness, plausible query structure, and coverage of correct answers

Abstract:
Abstract:
Formal query building is an important part of complex question answering over knowledge bases. It aims to build correct executable queries for questions. Recent methods try to rank candidate queries generated by a state-transition strategy. However, this candidate generation strategy ignores the structure of queries, resulting in a considerable number of noisy queries. In this paper, we propose a new formal query building approach that consists of two stages. In the first stage, we predict the query structure of the question and leverage the structure to constrain the generation of the candidate queries. We propose a novel graph generation framework to handle the structure prediction task and design an encoder-decoder model to predict the argument of the predetermined operation in each generative step. In the second stage, we follow the previous methods to rank the candidate queries. The experimental results show that our formal query building approach outperforms existing methods on complex questions while staying competitive on simple questions.

In reverse engineering of database queries, we aim to construct a query from a given set of answers and non-answers; it can then be used to explore the data further or as an explanation of the answers and non-answers. We investigate this query-by-example problem for queries formulated in positive fragments of linear temporal logic LTL over timestamped data, focusing on the design of suitable query languages and the combined and data complexity of deciding whether there exists a query in the given language that separates the given answers from non-answers. We consider both plain LTL queries and those mediated by LTL ontologies.

Abstract:
Answering queries over incomplete data is ubiquitous in data management and in many AI applications that use query rewriting to take advantage of relational database technology. In these scenarios one lacks full information on the data but queries still need to be answered with certainty. The certainty aspect often makes query answering unfeasible except for restricted classes, such as unions of conjunctive queries. In addition often there are no, or very few certain answers, thus expensive computation is in vain. Therefore we study a relaxation of certain answers called best answers. They are defined as those answers for which there is no better one (that is, no answer true in more possible worlds). When certain answers exist the two notions coincide. We compare different ways of casting query answering as a decision problem and characterise its complexity for first-order queries, showing significant differences in the behavior of best and certain answers. We then restrict attention to best answers for unions of conjunctive queries and produce a practical algorithm for finding them based on query rewriting techniques.

We consider the problem to learn a concept or a query in the presence of an ontology formulated in the description logic ELr, in Angluin's framework of active learning that allows the learning algorithm to interactively query an oracle (such as a domain expert). We show that the following can be learned in polynomial time: (1) EL-concepts, (2) symmetry-free ELI-concepts, and (3) conjunctive queries (CQs) that are chordal, symmetry-free, and of bounded arity. In all cases, the learner can pose to the oracle membership queries based on ABoxes and equivalence queries that ask whether a given concept/query from the considered class is equivalent to the target. The restriction to bounded arity in (3) can be removed when we admit unrestricted CQs in equivalence queries. We also show that EL-concepts are not polynomial query learnable in the presence of ELI-ontologies.

Abstract:
Ontology-mediated query answering (OMQA) is a promising approach to data access and integration that has been actively studied in the knowledge representation and database communities for more than a decade. The vast majority of work on OMQA focuses on conjunctive queries, whereas more expressive queries that feature counting or other forms of aggregation remain largely unexplored. In this paper, we introduce a general form of counting query, relate it to previous proposals, and study the complexity of answering such queries in the presence of DL-Lite ontologies. As it follows from existing work that query answering is intractable and often of high complexity, we consider some practically relevant restrictions, for which we establish improved complexity bounds.

Abstract:
Neural semantic parsers usually fail to parse long and complicated utterances into nested SQL queries, due to the large search space. In this paper, we propose a novel recursive semantic parsing framework called RECPARSER to generate the nested SQL query layer-by-layer. It decomposes the complicated nested SQL query generation problem into several progressive non-nested SQL query generation problems. Furthermore, we propose a novel Question Decomposer module to explicitly encourage RECPARSER to focus on different components of an utterance when predicting SQL queries of different layers. Experiments on the Spider dataset show that our approach is more effective compared to the previous works at predicting the nested SQL queries. In addition, we achieve an overall accuracy that is comparable with state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract:
Query completion systems are well studied in the context of information retrieval systems that handle keyword queries. However, Natural Language Interface to Databases (NLIDB) systems that focus on syntactically correct and semantically complete queries to obtain high precision answers require a fundamentally different approach to the query completion problem as opposed to IR systems. To the best of our knowledge, we are first to focus on the problem of query completion for NLIDB systems. In particular, we introduce a novel concept of functional partitioning of an ontology and then design algorithms to intelligently use the components obtained from functional partitioning to extend a state-of-the-art NLIDB system to produce accurate and semantically meaningful query completions in the absence of query logs. We test the proposed query completion framework on multiple benchmark datasets and demonstrate the efficacy of our technique empirically.

Abstract:
While ontology-mediated query answering most often adopts (unions of) conjunctive queries as the query language, some recent works have explored the use of counting queries coupled with DL-Lite ontologies. The aim of the present paper is to extend the study of counting queries to Horn description logics outside the DL-Lite family. Through a combination of novel techniques, adaptations of existing constructions, and new connections to closed predicates, we achieve a complete picture of the data and combined complexity of answering counting conjunctive queries (CCQs) and cardinality queries (a restricted class of CCQs) in ELHI⊥ and its various sublogics. Notably, we show that CCQ answering is 2EXP-complete in combined complexity for ELHI⊥ and every sublogic that extends EL or DL-Lite-pos-H. Our study not only provides the first results for counting queries beyond DL-Lite, but it also closes some open questions about the combined complexity of CCQ answering in DL-Lite.

Abstract:
The separation problem for a class Q of database queries is to find a query in Q that distinguishes between a given set of ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ data examples. Separation provides explanations of examples and underpins the query-by-example paradigm to support database users in constructing and refining queries. As the space of all separating queries can be large, it is helpful to succinctly represent this space by means of its most specific (logically strongest) and general (weakest) members. We investigate this extremal separation problem for classes of instance queries formulated in linear temporal logic LTL with the operators conjunction, ‘next’, and ‘eventually’. Our results range from tight complexity bounds for verifying and counting extremal separators to algorithms computing them.

Abstract:
Ontology-based data access (OBDA) generalizes query answering in relational databases. It allows to query a database by using the language of an ontology, abstracting from the actual relations of the database. For ontologies formulated in Description Logics of the DL-Lite family, OBDA can be realized by rewriting the query into a classical first-order query, e.g. an SQL query, by compiling the information of the ontology into the query. The query is then answered using classical database techniques. In this report, we consider a temporal version of OBDA. We propose a temporal query language that combines a linear temporal logic with queries over DL-Litecore-ontologies. This language is well-suited for expressing temporal properties of dynamical systems and is useful in context-aware applications that need to detect specific situations. Using a first-order rewriting approach, we transform our temporal queries into queries over a temporal database. We then present three approaches to answering the resulting queries, all having different advantages and drawbacks.

Abstract:
Classical regular path queries (RPQs) can be too restrictive for some applications and answering such queries under approximate semantics to relax the query is desirable. While for answering regular path queries over graph databases under approximate semantics algorithms are available, such algorithms are scarce for the ontology-mediated setting. In this paper we extend an approach for answering RPQs over graph databases that uses weighted transducers to approximate paths from the query in two ways. The first extension is to answering approximate conjunctive 2-way regular path queries (C2RPQs) over graph databases and the second is to answering C2RPQs over ELH and DL-LiteR ontologies. We provide results on the computational complexity of the underlying reasoning problems and devise approximate query answering algorithms.

Abstract:
Ontology-based data access (OBDA) generalizes query answering in databases towards deduction since (i) the fact base is not assumed to contain complete knowledge (i.e., there is no closed world assumption), and (ii) the interpretation of the predicates occurring in the queries is constrained by axioms of an ontology. OBDA has been investigated in detail for the case where the ontology is expressed by an appropriate Description Logic (DL) and the queries are conjunctive queries. Motivated by situation awareness applications, we investigate an extension of OBDA to the temporal case. As query language we consider an extension of the well-known propositional temporal logic LTL where conjunctive queries can occur in place of propositional variables, and as ontology language we use the prototypical expressive DL ALC. For the resulting instance of temporalized OBDA, we investigate both data complexity and combined complexity of the query entailment problem.

Abstract:
Forming the foundations of large-scale knowledge bases, probabilistic databases have been widely studied in the literature. In particular, probabilistic query evaluation has been investigated intensively as a central inference mechanism. However, despite its power, query evaluation alone cannot extract all the relevant information encompassed in large-scale knowledge bases. To exploit this potential, we study two inference tasks; namely finding the most probable database and the most probable hypothesis for a given query. As natural counterparts of most probable explanations (MPE) and maximum a posteriori hypotheses (MAP) in probabilistic graphical models, they can be used in a variety of applications that involve prediction or diagnosis tasks. We investigate these problems relative to a variety of query languages, ranging from conjunctive queries to ontology-mediated queries, and provide a detailed complexity analysis.

Abstract:
Ontology-mediated query answering is a popular paradigm for enriching answers to user queries with background knowledge. For querying the absence of information, however, there exist only few ontology-based approaches. Moreover, these proposals conflate the closed-domain and closed-world assumption, and therefore are not suited to deal with the anonymous objects that are common in ontological reasoning. We propose a new closed-world semantics for answering conjunctive queries with negation over ontologies formulated in the description logic ELH⊥, which is based on the minimal canonical model. We propose a rewriting strategy for dealing with negated query atoms, which shows that query answering is possible in polynomial time in data complexity.

Abstract:
Ontology-based data access augments classical query answering over fact bases by adopting the open-world assumption and by including domain knowledge provided by an ontology. We implemented temporal query answering w.r.t. ontologies formulated in the Description Logic DL-Lite. Focusing on temporal conjunctive queries (TCQs), which combine conjunctive queries via the operators of propositional linear temporal logic, we regard three approaches for answering them: an iterative algorithm that considers all data available; a window-based algorithm; and a rewriting approach, which translates the TCQs to be answered into SQL queries. Since the relevant ontological knowledge is already encoded into the latter queries, they can be answered by a standard database system. Our evaluation especially shows that implementations of both the iterative and the window-based algorithm answer TCQs within a few milliseconds, and that the former achieves a constant performance, even if data is growing over time.

Abstract:
Large-scale knowledge bases are at the heart of modern information systems. Their knowledge is inherently uncertain, and hence they are often materialized as probabilistic databases. However, probabilistic database management systems typically lack the capability to incorporate implicit background knowledge and, consequently, fail to capture some intuitive query answers. Ontology-mediated query answering is a popular paradigm for encoding commonsense knowledge, which can provide more complete answers to user queries. We propose a new data model that integrates the paradigm of ontology-mediated query answering with probabilistic databases, employing a log-linear probability model. We compare our approach to existing proposals, and provide supporting computational results.

Abstract:
Especially in the field of stream reasoning, there is an increased interest in reasoning about temporal data in order to detect situations of interest or complex events. Ontologies have been proved a useful way to infer missing information from incomplete data, or simply to allow for a higher order vocabulary to be used in the event descriptions. Motivated by this, ontology-based temporal query answering has been proposed as a means for the recognition of situations and complex events. But often, the data to be processed do not only contain temporal information, but also probabilistic information, for example because of uncertain sensor measurements. While there has been a plethora of research on ontologybased temporal query answering, only little is known so far about querying temporal probabilistic data using ontologies. This work addresses this problem by introducing a temporal query language that extends a well-investigated temporal query language with probability operators, and investigating the complexity of answering queries using this query language together with ontologies formulated in the description logic EL.
