Abstract:
With interoperability issues plaguing emergency responders throughout the country, Cognitive Radio (CR) offers a unique solution to streamline communication between police, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), and military officers. Using Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology, a flexible radio platform can be potentially configured using a Cognitive Engine (CE) to transmit and receive many different incompatible radio standards. In this thesis, an interface between a Cognitive Engine and an SDR platform is described which modifies (i.e., configures) the radioâ s operation. The interface

Abstract:
Modifications of large reflector antennas, such that their observing capabilities are enhanced in the range of about 10-500~MHz without affecting operation of the pre-existing higher-frequency systems, are addressed in this dissertation. The major contributions of this dissertation can be divided into two parts: 1) designing new low frequency feeds, and 2) developing new analysis methodologies which, as opposed to traditional techniques, are suitable for analyzing low frequency systems. First, we consider the performance of existing schemes that provide low frequency capability. Then, a new

This thesis describes an experimental investigation into the performance of a radio frequency plasma thruster (RFPT). This type of thruster does not rely on the use of high voltage ion acceleration grids or beam neutralisers which are typically life limiting elements of an electric thruster. The RFPT excites an atomic or molecular gas into a plasma using an external RF antenna. This plasma is contained by a cylindrical dielectric source tube which is open at one end. An axial magnetic field is applied to the plasma using one or more solenoids or a permanent magnet source. The magnetic field is

In the event of a disaster, first responders must rapidly gain situational awareness about the environment in order to plan effective response operations. Unmanned ground vehicles are well suited for this task but often require a strong communication link to a remote ground station to effectively relay information. With the excitation frequency in the kilohertz range, a uniform and stable glow discharge has been successfully produced in atmospheric helium without the usually indispensable dielectric barrier. The encoding of sex ratio was examined in order to determine whether the cognitive process underlying it is automatic or effortful. Further, the current work examines whether OSR or Adult Sex Ratio (ASR: the ratio of adult males to females) is encoded. The operational sex ratio, the sex ratio of ready-to-mate individuals, reflects mate availability, and is therefore expected to affect competitive behaviour. This thesis explores the effect of operational sex ratio on competitive mating behaviour in the two-spotted goby ( Gobiusculus flavescens). In a field population of two-spotted gobies at the west coast of Sweden, sex roles swit

A comprehensive literature review is done on agency costs and transactional motives to give the reader an overview of the costs and benefits of holding cash. This provides the foundation for the precautionary motives for companies today to keep cash as a
