Full textSelf-recognition in a mirror, on a recent photography or on a pre-recorded video film is a sign of the existence of a self-awareness which is required for social relations, self-care and self-esteem. This study shows that the loss of selfrecognition in senile dementia of the alzheimer type is related to the severity of the disease. Our results confirmthe hypothesis based on studies with infants according to which contingency cues in the mirror condition facilitate selfrecognition. It is obvious that ad patients show what ajuriaguerra calls "regression" of the capacity to self-recognize. Such difficulties are present in normal aged subjects. The results raise the question of the neuropsychological troubles underlying the loss of self-recognition, specially the existence of agnosia (or prosopagnosia) : most of the patients who do not self-recognize in the video test, recognize a familiar face. Moreover, ad patients do not show covert self-recognition, while prosopagnosics do so. Results on enrichment sessions of self-recognition incorporating mirror training and emphasizing contingent feeback, suggest that in geriatric unities, aged patients may be cared in front of a mirror in order to maintain, or reinforce this capacity

Full textThe thesis addresses two issues. The first is to consider the philosophical foundation of what we have observed a recurrence in the Haitian and Caribbean studies: the position of history as a condition to explain the fate of Haitian and Caribbean societies. Indeed, the majority of studies prepared by these companies arrange a visit by history in the attempt to explain the social news, political, economic and cultural Haitian and Caribbean. We found that if the social sciences are a long history as an explanation, the philosophical demand has led us understand how history has come to establish itself as a trainer to become forms of colonial Haiti and the Caribbean. In this sense, we have shown, starting from the phenomenology of history, phenomenology hermeneutics of the historical consciousness of how sedimentation condense and become the conditions of repetition compulsion laid or denounced unnamed historians, anthropologists, sociologists and economic-speaking Caribbean islands. This, too, follows the route of the humanities. That is to say, we have also traveled the history of French colonial societies of the period 15-18 century, certainly a philosophical point of view, having as a purpose, that of showing, not the web historical processes that have become the aforementioned companies, but that offer a reading of the terms of sedimentation of historical experience. So we studied the colonial societies from the "struggle for recognition, understood as a struggle from which the representation was made by the colonists themselves and others according to social norms colonial force. Addressing the dynamics of colonial struggles through representation can show how, by the mirror effect, as the Colonials (settlers, slaves and free) are constrained in the colonial discourse was based on both freedom and easement. Having shown places "ideological", philosophical and theological elaboration of the European narrative of slavery, we are interested in French colonial companies themselves.

Full textWe explore in an original way the conditions for self-recognition, from which human self-awareness emerges ; we do so by analyzing the discordance observed in psychotherapy in a boy of 7 years and 4 months : it relates to the integration of self-representations in a mirror-image situation. Using a discourse analysis methodology produced in interaction, the interlocutory logic (2007), we have recourse to the theory of investigation and research developed by Hintikka (1976, 1984, 1998b) , so as to offer a model that analyzes formally the clinical aspects of the mental phenomena observed in the patient. Retrospectively we ask questions about the fertile moment between 18 and 36 months, at which time a new form of intentionality emerges : it integrates the characteristics of linguistic signs and, in particular, in that context, the status of the self-referencing signifier in the formation of the function of “I'”

THIS RESEARCH HAS BEEN CONDUCTED BOTH IN FRANCE AND TUNISIA. IN FACT, 219 NON-DELINQUENT YOUNG PEOPLE AGED BETWEEN 16 AND 18 YEARS AND ATTENDING PROFESSIONAL SECONDARY SHCOOLS AND YOUNG DELINQUENTS OF THE SAME AGE WHICH ARE ATTENDING TRAINING CENTRES within INSTITUTIONS OF CONTROLLED EDUCATION. THIS RESEARCH AIMED AT STUDYING THE NOTION OF SELF CONCEPTION WITH ITS DIFFERENT COMPONENTS, NAMELY : IDEAL EGO CONCEPTION, SELF CONCEPTION AND SOCIAL SELF, TEMPORAL DIMENSIONS BETWEEN DIFFERENT EGO CONCEPTIONS, DEVELOPMENT OF EGO CONCEPTION THROUGH TIME (PAST- PRESENT-FUTURE) AND THE INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL GROUP BELONGING ON SELF CONCEPTION AND ALTER CONCEPTION. THE OBTAINED RESULTS STAND OUT, BESIDES THE EFFECTS OF TYPE OF LIFE-ETHNIC ORIGIN, AND THE REPERCUSSION OF MIGRATION ON SELF-CONCEPTION. ON THE OTHER HAND, WE HAVE NOTICED THAT SELF-CONCEPTIONS AS DEVELOPPED BY THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF IMMIGRANT PARENTS IS NOT ONLY DEEPLY MARKED BY THEIR TYPE OF LIFE BUT ARE ALSO QUITE DIFFERENT OF THAT DEVELOPPED BY FRENCH NON-MIGRANT FRENCH AND NORTH-AFRICAN YOUNG PEOPLE. IN COUNTERPART, WE HAVE NOTICED DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SELF-CONCEPTION AS DEFINED BY DELIQUENTS AND THAT DEVELOPPED BY NON-DELINQUENTS. THOUGH NOTICEABLE AT ALL LEVELS, THESE DIFFERENCES REFLECT A VERY LIMITED EFFECT OF IMMIGRANTS' TYPE OF LIFE ON SELF-CONCEPTION DEVELOPPED BY DELINQUENTS OF IMMIGRANT PARENTS

Thesis, Clermont-Ferrand 2, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016CLF20005.
Full textThis study in comparative philosophy offers a hermeneutics of the idea of self. It explores the ascetic dimension of the question “what self?” apparent across the various disciplines of liberation developed by the Stoic and Zen traditions. In its diverse guises, this question is the cornerstone of specific practices of the self within these traditions. As such, its main function is to guide the idea of self, with regard to the polarity self ↔ non-self, in order to achieve the status of the sage, which represents a kind of harmony with an original nature that is common to all individuals. Therefore, rather than simply designating an ontological foundation – real or alleged – the idea of self has the role of a vector, which, depending on its orientation, allows one to actualise (or not) this harmony. Through comparative analysis of the role of negation (detachment) of the self, this study seeks to broaden the spectrum of the processes of subjectification or practices of the self and, thus, to bring to light an aspect that has been somewhat neglected by the Western history of subjectivity. In doing so, this thesis enables better understanding of how the full-bodied (meta)physics of the Stoics is able to think the negation (detachment) of the self and, conversely, of how the Buddhist metaphysics of emptiness can develop an idea of moral subjectivity and responsibility

Full textThe increase of the use of social network sites has consequences regarding individual privacy. The Internet’s capability to disseminate information and various communication services available is also a mechanism that reveals the privacy of the user in digital public spaces. Our doctoral research project proposes to study the practices and whole of the factors associated with the phenomenon of self-exposure on social network sites, especially on Facebook. This research contains a quantitative analysis, based on an online questionnaire to 444 Facebook users, as well as a qualitative analysis from 27 interviews conducted with users of this social network site.It aims to analyze the reasons that explain the development of regulatory practices of digital visibility caused by a social network site that incites increased self-exposure.It appears that users are able to develop spaces of visibility of their personal information and that they modulate their practices in order to manage the complexity of the digital identity. Then, changes in individuals’ visibility on Facebook do not occur a linear fashion but in phases, defined as interventions in the management practices of privacy. These changes correspond to instances of life that are concurrent to the experience of use. Finally, the socio-technical system, or rather the invitations to self-exposure so that it emits, as the normative expectations of the "society" are equally ways of defining the identity of the user of social network sites. Factors invitation to self-exposure - that is the user himself; its network of relationships; the socio-technical device Facebook; and "society" under the related normative expectations it imposes - correspond largely to preventive mechanisms guarding against potential threats to privacy

Full textIn this work we bring out some aspects of the anatta doctrine (non-self) depicted in the pali canon. In this regard we have consulted a large portion of the pali tipitaka (sutta, vinaya, abhidhamma) as well as the commentaries (atthakatha) and its subcommentaries (tika). The term "atta" corresponds in the vedic philosophy to braham or atman eternal. Therefore the prefix negatif "an+atta" is a recognition under buddhist philosophy of anatta or doctrine of non-self. In the first part of the thesis we study the historical, philosophical and religious back ground of ancient india, and in the second part we examine the fundamental teachings of buddhism relating to the no-soul doctrine. Then, the third part "analytical study of an individual" proves that no permanent soul exists amongst this empirical individuals. In the fourth part, we make a comparative study of philosophies on the eternal soul in ancient india, and we conclude this thesis by giving our explanations on the silence of the buddha on the avyakata
Jouili, Jeanette S. "Devenir pieuse : femmes musulmanes en France et en Allemagne entre réforme de soi et quête de reconnaissance." Paris, EHESS, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007EHES0015.
Full textThis dissertation investigates the trajectories of piety of young Muslim women in France and Germany. The dissertation examines various discursive and bodily practices connected to the acquisition of (religious) knowledge, the ritual Islamic prayer, and female modesty. These practices circumscribe a regime of self-discipline which fashions the pious Muslim subject. However, they also become meaningful in contexts of social interaction in the secular public spheres. If an analysis of the different practices reveals processes of renegotiation of gender norms, these do not necessarily lead to a (radical) questioning of the patriarchal framework of Islamic orthodoxy. To conclude, the pious subject who is emerging questions the normative understanding of the term 'subject', defined through autonomy and rationality. Without rejecting completely these ideals, the women refer to seemingly contradictory values. However, these 'traditional' values give rise to a particular form of agency

Full textThe work reported in this document relates to pixel size reduction in uncooled infrared imaging in the LWIR range. The motivation for such a downsize is pretty straightforward (better matrices performances or lower production costs), achieving this without lowering the pixel performance is a true challenge. That is, for state of the art detectors based on thermistors, pixel downscaling leads to lower signal to noise ratio as well as a decrease in detector thermal isolation that in turn reduces the signal's amplitude. Our work focused on the study of SOI components for use as thermal transducer in a 5µm pixel design. As such we evaluated these components' intrinsic thermal properties to compare expected performance of a 5µm SOI bolometer with that of a state of the art bolometer scaled to the same pixel size, which allowed us to conclude that the interest for SOI bolometers is well-founded. We were also able to confirm that our pixel design is able to maintain sufficient IR absorption, but that the thermal isolation is yet problematic. This problem is however not specific to SOI bolometers and as such does not undermine the interest for SOI detectors for 5µm pixel pitch bolometers for uncooled IR imaging

Full textThe relationship between self-image and body image is studied through the comparison of three groups of women : bulimics , cured bulimics and controls. The method includes a battery of tests as well as content analysis of semi-structured interviews. The findings point to relative independence between self-image and body image in normal weight women not suffering from eating disorders. Body image is however at the service of self-image, and used as a means to express self-esteem and seduction. For the bulimic group however, self-image and body image are confused and superposed. Since the variables of this pathology tend to reinforce each other, patients find themselves in a situation of over determination once the eating disorder is in place
Lopes, Jeremy. "Design of an Innovative GALS (Globally Asynchronous Locally Synchronous), Non-Volatile Integrated Circuit for Space Applications." Thesis, Montpellier, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017MONTS052/document.
Full textToday, there are several ways to develop microelectronic circuits adapted for space applications that meet the harsh constraints of immunity towards radiation, whether in terms of technical design or manufacturing process. The aim of this doctorate is on the one hand to combine several novel techniques of microelectronics to design architectures adapted to this type of application, and on the other hand to incorporate non-volatile magnetic components inherently robust to radiation. Such an assembly would be quite innovative and would benefit without precedent, in terms of surface, consumption, robustness and cost.In contrast with synchronous circuit designs that rely on a clock signal, asynchronous circuits have the advantage of being more or less insensitive to delay variations resulting for example from variations in the manufacturing process. Furthermore, by avoiding the use of a clock, asynchronous circuits have relatively low power consumption. Asynchronous circuits are generally designed to operate based on events determined using a specific handshake protocol. For aviation and/or spatial applications, it would be desirable to provide an asynchronous circuit that is rendered robust against the effects of radiation. Indeed, the presence of ionising particles at high altitudes or in space can induce currents in integrated circuits that may be enough to cause a flip in the binary state held by one or more gates. This may cause the circuit to malfunction, known in the art as a single event upset (SEU). It has been proposed to provide dual modular redundancy (DMR) or triple modular redundancy (TMR) in an asynchronous circuit design in order to provide radiation protection. Such techniques rely on duplicating the circuit in the case of DMR, or triplicating the circuit in the case of TMR, and detecting a discordance between the outputs of the circuits as an indication of the occurrence of an SEU.The integration of inherently robust non-volatile components, such as Magnetic Tunnel Junctions (MTJ), the main element of MRAM memory, could lead to new ways of data retention in harsh environments. MTJ devices are constituted of ferromagnetic materials with magnetic properties that are not sensitive to radiation. Data is stored in the form of the direction of the magnetisation and not in the form of an electric charge, which is an essential property for space applications. It is also widely recognised in the field of microelectronics that integrated circuits manufactured on SOI (Silicon On Insulator) substrates are more robust to radiation. There is thus a need in the art for a circuit having relatively low surface area and power consumption, and that allows recovery following an SEU without requiring a reset and that has non-volatile characteristics. The objective of this doctorate is to combine all the above mentioned benefits by regrouping several methods of microelectronic design responding to the constraints of space applications into a novel architecture. A complete circuit has been created, designed, simulated, validated and sent to manufacturing in a 28nm FD-SOI process. This circuit is composed of an adder pipeline and a complex BIST (Build In Self Test). When fabricated, this circuit will be tested. First a functional test will be realised, then laser pules attacks will be performed and finally a heavy ions attack campaign
Ait, Ben Lmadani Fatima. "La vieillesse illégitime? : Migrantes marocaines en quête de reconnaissance sociale ?" Paris 7, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007PA070030.
Full textConsidering only old female Moroccan migrants as the subjects of this thesis on migration, we pursue two objectives : The first one consists in showing the way their need of recognition builds itself through the experiences of contempt engendered by the situations of dominion and by the feelings of injustice that confront them. The second one concerns the way this normative frame, that can a priori be considered carrier of emancipation, actually functions as coercive and accentuates the submission of these women. By privileging a situational approach, this work questions successively the forms of contempt, the grades of résistance and the qualifies of strategy employed. It acts as a process of interrogation of the constituent modes of invisibility of these immigrant women and the dimension of their autonomous illegitimate existence. Therefore, it is important to emphasize the following : Confronted by the stigmatisation of their work and the experiences of contempt which they undergo, the immigrant women adopt strategies of restoration of their self which depend on each one of their individual trajectory in the French Society, the place occupied by their group within the French society and of their evaluation of the situation. Facing the paradox of the normative injunctions imposed by the institutions, the Moroccan migrants use them to bypass the obligations engendered by these institutions. Confronted with difficulties connected to the limitation of their right of participation, the women that were interviewed, use essentially the links with the country of origin to obtain a social respect which depends on the ways the power relations are negotiated and on the margin of operation each individual has reached

Full textOur study focuses self-sacrifice on nursing care and more specifically about the calling in nurse profession. As the work wore on, we search to know how people decided to become a nurseWe seek to know what motivates individuals to practice this profession exposed to what society is driving back today: vulnerability, old age, illness and death. The point of entry of our research has started around a terminology: the calling or vocation, to arrive at the postulate that the commitment in nursing requires a particular form of "love" which urges us to bring relief, attention and care to the vulnerable person. We know that to grasp this commitment is to accept the complexity. For nurses, we are confronted with an entanglement of wills, demands, choices, desires, dreams, idealistic representations, search for explanations, meaning that constitutes the basis on which actors engage. In this work, we looked at the initial commitment. In a comprehensive approach, we questioned nursing students and nurses about the time when they decided to take the plunge and chose to engage in the profession. The survey allowed us to collect a number of data and verbatim, which crossed with our personal data, allowed to explore this process. We compared the data collected with Marcel Mauss's theory of the gift. A cluster of orientations between freedom and constraint, gratuitousness and interest, have served us as the axis on which our whole demonstration has been mobilized. We went to seek the modes of meaning and incarnation of the nursing commitment to the prism of the conceptual mapping of the tetralogy of the gift. Keywords: to care, to cure, involvement, nurse, vocation, media visuals, gift, thankfulness

Full textThis research aimed at studying the process of transformation of “dirty work” into “commendable work”. This was done by highlighting self-recognition at work, understood as the result of self-agency tensions. Work moral division at the hospital organizes tasks as well as careers through the separation of life-preserving related activities from death-reminiscence related ones. The research focuses on the notion of “dirty work” and analyzes, through death-related activities, work’s moral and psychological division. The theoretical framework used articulates anthropological and historical views on how modern society and thereby, the hospital deals with death; intertwining theories derived from “work’s clinical psychology” with the concept of psychosocial negative, analyzer of both work’s moral hierarchy and self-recognition. Herein, activity is the fundamental unit of analysis and the “collective work arrangements” are conceptualized as transitional space for the emergence of self-agency dialectics. The activities analyzed and compared are medical termination of pregnancy, abortion at the gynecological unit and accompanying the dying at the palliative care mobile team. The method subscribes to the action-research tradition, whereby participant-observation and semi-structured interviews with healthcare workers as well as chief-nurses were used. The results of this research are presented under three main axes: Firstly, the moral hierarchization of the medical units, of the professions and of the activities is articulated to the collective defense strategies as well as to professional ideology, which contribute to the definition and to the banishment of “dirty work”, thus structuring the organization of work itself. Secondly, the different group configurations are a function of archaic affects emerging from dealing with death-related activities. These may involve, but also encumber healthcare professionals, thus disorganizing the “collective work arrangements”. Strategies to disengage were identified: they open up to symbolic resources which allow restraining fantasmatic resonance induced by the confrontation of the object of their work, i.e. death, and its symbolic equivalents, disease, old-age, deficiency, loss… Moreover, the capacity to institute new norms and to recognize oneself while working has its bearing on collective configuration founded upon shared norms. Finally, should “collective work arrangements” fail to be created, trans-individual resources are called upon to subvert negative into estimable work, based on the different dimensions of “Civilization work”

Full textSchool is far from being the only place where human beings acquire knowledge. Learning, begins at birth and continues throughout life. Over time, the person accumulates knowledge that he or she calls on to respond to new problems that in fact contribute to the emergence of a new knowledge and to revise that already acquired. The daily confrontation with an illness questions the different dimensions and components of identity and generates periods of identity turbulence, which we have assumed to constitute favorable moments for learning. On the basis of this hypothesis, our thesis aims at making intelligible the interactions between identity processes, learning in informal situations and the relation to illness. A qualitative method is used based on semi-directive interviews. On the one hand, the thesis analyzes the strategies put in place by people with diabetes to requalify the relationship with themselves, with others and the different environments. On the other hand the subjective experience of a person's trajectory in its different spatio-temporal dimensions is resignified

Full textDuring the last three decades, the image of Romania has shifted from the model of a highly respected mythical sovereignty to that of an underdeveloped country. This research approaches the internalization of the dynamics of these transformations in some particular social fields: firstly, inside a NGO of democratization; secondly, by the inhabitants of a neighbourhood in the city of Bucharest. The NGO, through means of constitutional reforms, stands as a pedagogue of democracy by obeying the logic of stigmatization. Of the communist past. Inside the residences, the actors produce themselves as representing the middle social stratum. The neighbourhood distinguishes itself by adopting the westerns norms and by opposing itself either to the traditional peasants or to the Gypsy. The production of the symbolic images of the foreigner is a corollary of the wish of escaping the stigmatized identity whilst shaping the modification of social relationships

Full textThe identity shaping of the romantic subject owes to a large semantic field of identity in general, and of personal identity in particular. At the time of modernity, and more precisely, of the assertion of the subject, the sense and value of the identity process imply transversal clarification with the help of social and human sciences. As far as francophone African literature is concerned, the identity shaping of the romantic subject in the novel is facing the persistences of a referential environment which is submitted to sociocultural mutation.Applied to a corpus of four novels written by two gabonese authors, Angele Rawiri and Jean Divassa Nyama, the current study concerns the identity process of the romantic subject who is sharing rural as well as urban environment, and who, despite several strategies at stake, responds though his failure, to the concept of the problematic “hero”.Consequently, the emerging process of the African subject depends on the improvement of his being, through a real knowledge of himself and his cultural values. That is the best way for him to assert his existence in the world

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to investigate the neural basis of self-representation in the non human primate. We studied the multimodal convergence both 1) at the area level precisely mapping auditory, tactile and visual convergence in the intraparietal sulcus and 2) at the whole brain level capturing the spatial pattern of visuo-tactile cortical convergence. We also investigated the neural network subserving multisensory integration in a dynamical visuo tactile context, showing that the strongest behavioral and cortical are obtained when the visual stimuli is predictive of the tactile stimulus rather than during simultaneous presentations. Finally, we studied the representation of space by characterizing the neural bases of near space and far space in a real naturalistic environment, thus providing the neural grounds for the observed behavioral and neuropsychological dissociation between near and far space processing

Full textThis thesis is a study on the issue of access to humanity that allows itself to think within a long tradition according to the double guidelines of the passage from nature to culture and from isolated life to a universe of shared diversity. G.W. Hegel spectacularly revived and outlined its terms for philosophy and gave it the form of the drama of consciousness that encompassed the entirety of knowledge and experience within the historical movement. This thesis outlines the epic of consciousness through its different phases, from the prime naivety of “sensitive consciousness” to the universality of “absolute knowledge.” It analyzes the varied reception of Hegel in modern philosophical and sociological discourse. Taking as the common thread Hegel’s dialectic of recognition, this thesis examines its successive reappropriation by Bourdieu, Honneth et Girard. Bourdieu insists on the importance of cultural and symbolic factors in the mechanisms of reproducing social hierarchies and gives priority to symbolic violence. Honneth’s conception of Hegel underscores that society is not an aggregate of egoistical individuals driven by rational calculations and self-interests. Men have moral expectations and social struggles are “struggles for recognition.” As for Girard, he underscores the conflictual dimension of imitation and its relationship to violence

Full textThe prime-to-behavior effects have been widely studied. Research revealed that incidental concept activation could guide subsequent behavior and that this influence could be unconscious. However, some critics have emerged about these effects, questioning the robustness and the veracity of the prime-to-behavior effects. Identifying the underlying processes is essential to better understand under which conditions these effects appear and why some researchers have failed to replicate them. This work aimed at contributing to the identification of underlying mechanisms of these effects. Through nine experiments, we tested at one hand some methodological characteristics supposed to promote the emergence of these effects and, on the other hand some supposed theoretical moderators of the prime-to-behavior effects. Results prove the self-concept could determine the magnitude and the direction of these effects, depending on the self-consciousness or the self-esteem to be involved. Moreover, the level of conscious perception of the primes seems to be a potential moderator of the prime-to-behavior effects. Together, these results provide elements to continue the investigation of the underlying mechanisms of the prime- to-behavior effects

Full textThe aim of this research was the design of tunable matching networks, in two different contexts: the TMN at low and high signals.Performance criteria of TMN were studied. A general expression has been developed that estimates the TMN efficiency in function of the quality factor of the components used. The impedance coverage of different RAA topologies was plotted in function of the insertion losses. For the small signal, we designed a prototype in PCB, composed by two TMN, which ensure the simultaneous matching of a power amplifier in a wide range of impedances, included in a circle of the Smith chart VSWR < 5: 1. The coverage area was measured and presented in function of the insertion losses, emphasizing the areas where the TMN contribute to improve the amplifier performance and those where insertion losses of the TMN are not able to compensate gain with the reduction of the reflection coefficients.Subsequently, we discussed the design of TMN for the large signal. The objective is to present at the output of a power amplifier, the impedances that optimize efficiency for each power of operation. A 130 nm SOI prototype was designed and simulated, consisting of a power amplifier for WCDMA standard, 900 MHz, and a MN tunable by MOS varactors able to produce the optimal impedances corresponding to an output power between 20 and 30 dBm. The results showed the benefit provided by inserting a tunable MN compared to a fixed one

Full textThis master’s thesis concerns type 2 diabetes self-management strategies developed by the women of Reunion Island. Our research was conducted in the French Overseas Department where 15 % of adults are affected by this disease. We were inspired by the model described by Kleinman et al. (1978) and Young (1982) on the three dimensions of the disease, namely disease / illness / sickness, further developed by Massé (1995), to understand how women managed to cope with diabetes in their social and family environment. Data for the analysis was collected using individual interviews as well as one focus group. The women who succeeded in managing their diabetes more efficiently are the ones who managed to create a sphere of negotiation between medical advice and their life context. We first describe the reality of women through their culture, roles and obligations. The medical recommendations are then presented which, considering the biological dimension of the disease (disease), are often disembodied from what women live. Finally, we see how using lay knowledge, which can be described as an interpretation of medical, alternative and popular discourses, as well as one’s own experiences, helped these women to successfully develop strategies to negotiate between their everyday lives and the constraints of the disease. Some facilitators of the negotiation process are also identified. Those people that have found the means to adapt to the disease could potentially be involved in the development of intervention processes based on lay knowledge which would be better adapted to the reality of diabetic people living in Reunion Island, where this disease is on the rise.

Full textThrough an ethnographic investigation, made in May 2006, fifty one cases of “homeless” people were studied. “Homeless” people are considered as people with no social, economic and personal conditions that allow them to have housing and as a result, they sleep “outside”, in a tent, under a bridge or in a house made with materials from the city. Using the ethnographic method - long duration of active observation, careful and discreet holding of a notebook to mention the daily observations, the author learns by physical experience, “by body”, the daily difficulties regarding the hygiene, the occupation of public places, and especially the efforts made to encounter the feelings of shame and “social contempt”, and to have access to some forms of recognition marked by the pride and the social esteem. Those people fight against the “social contempt” in different ways: some of them settle down in “corners” or in the margins of the city to be less visible, others try to erase all forms of precariousness on their bodies, and others join the manifestation of “Enfants de Don Quichotte” in fall 2006 in Paris. During these paths, going from survival to recognition, the people make us see and think about the logics of domination which are at the same time moral, physical, and cognitive and which characterize their social status
