Abstract:
The dissertation presents a study, through the reading of works of Pedro Nava, Valêncio Xavier e W.G. Sebald, about the relations between archive and literature, concentrating the focus over contemporary works of memorial tone that invest on the insertion of archival objects and documents as part of the literary work, not only implicitly, in the development of the text, but also explicitly, in the juxtaposition to the writing of documental pictures (with emphasis on photography). By exploring, in that way, an effect of index, by which the literary object is put on evidence as material construction, the works studied allow the research to produce relevant considerations about the relation picture/word, about representation, about realism and about literary hybridism, aiming a wider consideration about the space of literature in the contemporary world, marked by the fall of genres and of models of tradition.

Curran, Timothy M. "The Medievalizing Process: Religious Medievalism in Romantic and Victorian Literature." Scholar Commons, 2018. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7491.

Full text
Abstract:
The Medievalizing Process: Religious Medievalism in Romantic and Victorian Literature posits religious medievalism as one among many critical paradigms through which we might better understand literary efforts to bring notions of sanctity back into the modern world. As a cultural and artistic practice, medievalism processes the loss of medieval forms of understanding in the modern imagination and resuscitates these lost forms in new and imaginative ways to serve the purposes of the present. My dissertation proposes religious medievalism as a critical method that decodes modern texts’ lamentations over a perceived loss of the sacred. My project locates textual moments in select works of John Keats, Lord Byron, Charles Dickens, and Oscar Wilde that reveal concern over the consequences of modern dualism. It examines the ways in which these texts participate in a process of rejoining to enchant a rationalistic epistemology that stymies transcendental unity. I identify the body of Christ, the central organizing principle of medieval devotion, as the cynosure of nineteenth-century religious medievalism. This body offers a non-dualistic alternative that retroactively undermines and heals Cartesian divisions of mind and body and Kantian distinctions between noumenal and knowable realities. Inscribing the dynamic contours of the medieval religious body into a text’s linguistic structure, a method I call the “medievalizing process,” underscores the spiritual dimensions of its reform efforts and throws into relief a distinctly religious, collective agenda that undergirds many nineteenth-century texts.

Conradie, Catharina Maria. "Mythology – archaic relics or an archetypal and universal source of constant renewal? : an exploration of the relationship between myth and archetype in the myth of Demeter and Persephone." Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Ancient Studies)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
This thesis deals with the connection between mythology and psychagogy, and a structured way of reading and using myth for personal development is suggested. The myth of Demeter and Persephone is used for this purpose, and the text of the Homeric Hymn to Demeter is analysed as the basic (but not exclusive) text. In the modern world the psychagogic component relies on the work of Jung, which is seen as the most appropriate template available. His concept of the archetype is particularly useful, and the archetype of the mother goddess is analysed as a representation of the personal and spiritual development of modern women.

Dounavi, Myrto Despoina. "Interferential therapy protocols for pain relief : current clinical practice, review of the literature and new expreimental findings." Thesis, Keele University, 2009. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.510710.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is focused on interferential therapy (IFT) protocols for pain relief and consists of four studies. The first is an experimental study investigating the hypoalgesic effects of different IFT parameter combinations upon pressure pain threshold (PPT) in healthy participants. The results of this study showed that active IFT delivered in specific combinations did not produce significantly different hypoalgesic effects compared to control and placebo groups. The second study assessed the inter-rater reliability of measuring PPT on healthy participants using seven newly-trained raters. The scope of this study was to inform the first experimental study of this thesis and to provide new evidence regarding the inter-rater reliability of measuring PPT using a hand-held algometer. The results showed that the inter-rater reliability of this tool and protocol among seven newly trained raters was good. The third study was a narrative review of the accessible published literature which can inform the practice of IFT in terms of protocol selection for the treatment of pain in the United Kingdom. The results of this study demonstrated that the existing journal-based published evidence on IFT protocol selection is limited and inconclusive and the nonjournal published literature appears to be poorly substantiated. Finally, the fourth study of this thesis described the use and application of IFT for pain relief in private physiotherapy practice in the United Kingdom using a questionnaire-based survey approach. The results of this study revealed that IFT is still a frequently used modality for pain relief in the UK, but its application appears to be empirically based. The collective outcome of this thesis challenges the role of IFT in pain management and suggests that further robust clinical research is required to demonstrate whether the use of IFT in pain management should be continued.

Breedt, Joe-Anne. "A systematised review of the literature related to the implementation of vat zero-ratings as a relief measure for the poor." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/80483.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Value-added tax (VAT) has been implemented in South Africa since 1991 and is one of the three largest tax revenue collection streams for the South African government. In South Africa, a country with a high inequality in income, the government realised that the low-income households suffer under the heavy tax burden and that most of the income that the poor receive is spent on their basic needs for survival. The government therefore, acknowledged the need to zero-rate certain items from VAT in order to grant them a form of relief. Zero-rated items include the basic foodstuffs consumed. Main purpose of study: The aim of the study is to analyse and evaluate the perceived effectiveness of the zero-ratings of VAT through the exploration of articles. The study also aims to explore the options that governments have to implement other relief measures to assist the poor rather than zero-rating certain goods and services from VAT. The study considers the cost of compliance of a single standard VAT rate system with zero-ratings for both the taxpayer and the government. Method: A systematised review was followed to gather the relevant literature from accredited journals to ensure that the articles used in the research is of high quality. Results: The research indicates that citizens have doubt about the perceived effectiveness of the zero-ratings as all citizens benefit from the zero-rating of VAT. It does not provide relief to the poor only. The results of academic articles indicate that there are other options that government can utilise in assisting the poor from the heavy tax burden other than zero-rating certain goods and services from VAT, such as increasing social grants and levying VAT at a standard rate on all supplies. The results also indicate that the implementation of a flat VAT rate on all supplies can save both the government and the vendors money as the cost of administration and compliance will decrease. Conclusion: Government has been issuing social grants to assist the poor and has considered other options such as increasing the social grants, as the compliance costs relating to a single standard VAT rate system with zero-rating on certain goods and services are particularly high. The implementation of a new policy by withdrawing zero-rating of VAT is very sensitive to the citizens and could lead to massive dissatisfaction from the citizens. However, the options are worth exploring as the additional tax revenue can be used to fund the tax revenue gap in the South African budget.

Webster, Paul. "A critical analytic literature review of virtue ethics for social work : beyond codified conduct towards virtuous social work." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2011. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/7085/.

Full text
Abstract:
This submission is based on a critical analytical literature review of the moral paradigm of virtue ethics and a specific application of this to social work value discourse in search of lost identity. It echoes the philosophical academy's paradigmatic wars between 'act' and 'agent' appraisals in moral theory. Act appraisal theories focus on a person's act as the primary source of moral value whereas agent appraisal theories - whether 'agentprior' or stricter 'agent-based' versions - focus on a person's disposition to act morally. This generates a philosophical debate about which type of appraisal should take precedence in making an overall evaluation of a person's moral performance. My starting point is that at core social work is an altruistic activity entailing a deep commitment, a 'moral impulse', towards the distressed 'other'. This should privilege dispositional models of value that stress character and good motivation correctly applied - in effect making for an ethical career built upon the requisite moral virtues. However, the neo-liberal and neo-conservative state hegemony has all but vanquished the moral impulse and its correct application. In virtue ethical language, we live in 'vicious' times. I claim that social work's adherence to act appraisal Kantian and Utilitarian models is implicated in this loss. Kantian 'deontic' theory stresses inviolable moral principle to be obeyed irrespective of outcome: Utilitarian 'consequentualist' theory calculates the best moral outcome measured against principle. The withering of social work as a morally active profession has culminated in the state regulator's Code of Practice. This makes for a conformity of behaviour which I call 'proto-ethical' to distinguish it from 'ethics proper'. The Code demands that de-moralised practitioners dutifully follow policy, rules, procedures and targets - ersatz, piecemeal and simplistic forms of deontic and consequentualist act appraisals. Numerous inquiries into social work failures indict practitioners for such behaviour. I draw upon mainstream virtue ethical theory and the emergent social work counter discourse to get beyond both code and the simplified under-theoretisation of social work value. I defend a thesis regarding an identity-defining cluster of social work specific virtues. I propose two modules: 'righteous indignation' to capture the heartfelt moral impulse, and 'just generosity' to mindfully delineate the scope and legitimacy of the former. Their operation generates an exchange relationship with the client whereby the social worker builds 'surplus value' to give back more than must be taken in the transaction. I construct a social work specific minimal-maximal 'stability standard' to anchor the morally correct expression of these two modules and the estimation of surplus value. In satisficing terms, the standard describes what is good enough but is also potentially expansive. A derivative social work practice of moral value is embedded in an historic 'care and control' dialectic. The uncomfortable landscape is one of moral ambiguity and paradoxicality, to be navigated well in virtue terms. I argue that it is incongruous to speak of charactereological social worker virtues and vices and then not to employ the same paradigm to the client's moral world. This invites a functional analysis of virtue. The telos of social work - our moral impulse at work - directs us to scrutiny of the unsafe household. Our mandate is the well-being of the putative client within, discoursed in terms of functional life-stage virtues and vicious circumstance. I employ the allegorical device of a personal ethical journey from interested lay person to committed social worker, tracking the character-building moral peregrinations. I focus on two criticisms of virtue ethics - a philosophical fork. It is said that virtue ethical theory cannot of itself generate any reliable, independently validated action guidance. In so far as it does, the theory will endorse an as-given, even reactionary, criterion of right action, making 'virtue and vice' talk the bastion of the establishment power holders who control knowledge. I seek to repudiate these claims. Given that this demands a new approach to moral pedagogy, the practical implications for the suitability and training of social workers are discussed.

Abstract: The present PhD doctoral dissertation aims to study the novels of Eça de Queiroz, The Mandarin, The Relic and The City and the Mountains, as well as the works of Luciano de Samósata - Syrian writer from second-century a.C. - with the objective of verifying possible marks of the latter in Eça's aesthethic system. The corpus was chosen due to the fact that Queiroz's pieces present a particular discursive structure and produce some surprise in the reader and the critics, once they differ from the realistic-naturalistic discourse used by Queiroz in novels such as The Cousin Basílio and The Crime of Father Amaro. By adopting for the composition of such works a structure that is based on the unusual junction of apparently incompatible elements such as reality and fantasy, humor and philosophical seriousness, Eça de Queiroz created as Luciano in his satires, a true "hippocentaur", provoking in the reader and the critics, beyond surprise, certain discomfort and even certain doubt about the aesthetic quality of these texts and about his intentions while critical of his time, for they would lack the explicit components of the acrid social criticism by the Portuguese writer, thus being considered minor and less critical novels when compared to others from the predominantly realistic-naturalistic phase of the writer. As basis for theoretical support of this dissertation there had been used, besides the precious study by Professor Jacyntho Lins Brandão - The Poetic of Hippocentaur: literature, society and fictional speech by Luciano de Samósata-, texts from Samósata's novels' researches such as A. Fields, Lauren Ann. "Out of the Best Books: Mormon Assimilation and Exceptionalism Through Secular Reading." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2016. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/5973.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to explore the relationship between Mormon assimilation, exceptionalism, and their endeavors in secular reading by analyzing Out of the Best Books (OOBB), a 1964–71 five-volume reading guide and reading program on secular reading established by the Mormon Church for its women’s organization, the Relief Society. Examining the approaches to secular literature in the OOBB program suggests that Mormons can respond to their competing desires to separate and assimilate by making efforts that fulfill both aspirations simultaneously rather than moving exclusively in one direction. Yet OOBB’s efforts to achieve both objectives did not amount to an entirely seamless navigation of this paradox. The program’s attempts to incorporate texts that might challenge Mormon notions of morality as well as their efforts to introduce world literature and fully address their female audience raised additional tensions particularly relevant to contemporary Mormonism, suggesting the complexity of Mormons navigating this identity paradox both within the context of the OOBB program and today. Furthermore, this examination of OOBB offers a venture at fleshing out the history of Mormon reading, confirming Mormons’ relationship to literature as central to their conception and expression of identity and situating Mormon reading endeavors in the broader context of American reading practices.

Monson, Jason McLeod. "Hunger is the worst disease : conceptions of poverty and poverty relief in Buddhist social ethics." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2013. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4643/.

Full text
Abstract:
The present work addresses the notions of poverty and poverty relief in Buddhist social and economic ethics, comparing them to current approaches to conceptualizing poverty used in the development community. Given the Buddhist preoccupation with ceasing suffering and removing its causes, and the key Buddhist principle of Right Livelihood that is found in the Ennobling Eightfold Path to enlightenment taught by the Buddha, economic ethics appear to be central to the Buddhist path and a concern for the suffering caused by extreme poverty therefore ought to be a key point of concern in Buddhist ethics. Buddhist ethics has developed into a field of study all its own over the last few decades, addressing issues in applied ethics from bioethics to human rights and environmental concerns, but little has been written by virtually any standard on the important topic of poverty relief. The present work makes a step toward filling that gap by examining relevant passages in the Pāli Canon as well as popular and influential Mahāyāna sūtras to demonstrate that a concern for deprivation or non-voluntary impoverishment is evident in key Buddhist doctrines and teachings from the earliest recorded history of the Buddhist tradition. The thesis further discusses the duties to relieve poverty outlined in Buddhist social ethics as well as the development of Buddhist economics and its critique of dominant mainstream economics. It also offers a comparison of Buddhist conceptions of poverty with contemporary notions of poverty, such as the capabilities approach to poverty developed by Amartya Sen and currently in use by the UNDP. In both of these cases poverty is portrayed in a comprehensive and multi-dimmensional manner which views income as only one aspect of poverty. Additionally, this dissertation examines the contemporary Socially Engaged Buddhist movement and identifies historical and contemporary examples of Buddhist poverty relief efforts.

McIntyre, Matthew. "Corporeal Violence in Early Modern Revenge Tragedies." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2012. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/english_diss/86.

Full text
Abstract:
In the four early modern revenge tragedies I study, Thomas Kyd’s The Spanish Tragedy, William Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus, Thomas Middleton’s The Revenger’s Tragedy, and John Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi, the ubiquitous depictions of corporeal violence underscore the authors’ skepticism of the human tendency to infuse bodies – physical manifestations of both agency and vulnerability – with symbolism. The revengers in these plays try to avenge the death of a loved one whose disfigured body remains unburied and often continues to occupy a place on stage, but their efforts to infuse corpses with meaning instead reveal the revengers’ perverse obsession with mutilation as spectacle. In Chapter one, I show how in The Spanish Tragedy Thomas Kyd portrays the characters’ assertions of body-soul unity to be arbitrary attempts to justify self-serving motives. Although Hieronimo treats Horatio’s dead body as a signifier of his own emotions, he displays it, alongside the bodies of his enemies, as just another rotting corpse. In Chapter two, I explore how in Titus Andronicus, William Shakespeare questions the efficacy of rituals for maintaining social order by depicting how the play’s characters manipulate rituals intended to celebrate peace as opportunities to exact vengeance; Titus demands human sacrifice as not just an accompanying element, but a central motive of rituals ostensibly intended to signify commemoration. In Chapter three, I read The Revenger’s Tragedy as illustrating Thomas Middleton’s characterization of the depiction of corporeal mutilation as an overused, generic convention; the play’s revenger, Vindice, attributes multiple, constantly shifting, meanings to the rotting skull of his lover, which he uses as a murder weapon. In Chapter four I argue that in The Duchess of Malfi, John Webster destabilizes spectators’ interpretive capacities; within this play’s unconventional dramatic structure, the main characters use somatic imagery to associate bodily dismemberment with moral disintegration. Corpses, the tangible remains of once vigorous, able-bodied relatives, serve as central components of respectful commemoration or as mementos of vengeance, yet these dead, often gruesomely mutilated bodies also invite repulsion or perverse curiosity. Thus, rather than honoring the deceased, revengers objectify corpses as frightening spectacles or even use them as weapons.

Lindner, Jakob. "“When shall we laugh?”: Gratiano and the two faces of comedy in William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Engelska institutionen, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-170753.

Full text
Abstract:
Comedy is an inherently pleasurable phenomenon with beneficial psychological functions, but its potential to bring on undesirable and socially destabilizing consequences is less intuitively obvious. In this essay, I argue that one of the hitherto under-recognized features of William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice is its covert problematization of the phenomenon of comedy itself, and that the play invites its audience to become more aware of in what situations laughter is constructive and appropriate. I apply psychological and cultural-historical theories of humor— specifically, Freudian relief theory and Bakhtinian thought on laughter and festivity—as a framework for interpreting the play, with a particular emphasis on the secondary protagonist called Gratiano. I argue that Gratiano serves as a personification of comedy, whose function is to problematize it and demonstrate its positive as well as negative attributes in relation to seriousness and restraint. Gratiano’s laughter-inducing antics compel audience members to sympathize with him in the dialectic which Shakespeare sets up between him and other characters, but the play also portrays his jovial behavior as concomitant with less desirable traits which his comedy successfully obscures. While the character presents comedy as attractive and instinctively preferable to propriety and decorum, he also shows how the allure of laughter and comedy may be used by disingenuous actors to provide an attractive veneer for immoral or abhorrent behavior.

Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on medieval orality’s representation. It questions the very notion of « representation » by challenging the fundamental assumption of the equivalency between the oral and written communication systems .The issue of the relationship between writing and orality (I) is introduced through a brief examination of the notion of phonocentrism (I, 1). A category of orality markers involving non-resemblance representational models has been created to address this as a representational rather than a grammatical issue (I, 2). Then we analyze both medieval and oral salient characteristics (variation, imprecision, and improvisation) illustrated by our literary and inquisitorial corpus (I, 3). Finally, we will examine the way our texts depict their own representation of writing and orality (I, 4) The ad hoc development of a new linguistic category allows us to consider the markers of orality as new areas of analysis rather than mere representations of orality (II). The notion of medieval variance will be used to develop an analytical model as the basis for a « pragmaphilology », i.e. a discourse involving the combinatory possibilities of the orality markers (II, 5). Based on concepts of conversation analysis, we will focus on the role of markers as turn-taking organizing devices, including their function as transition or interruption graphic indicators (II, 6). We have considered four specific case studies (Oh, Et, Et bien, Hen) aiming at re-evaluating existing hypotheses about the function of orality markers (II, 7). Finally, our goal is to demonstrate that contrary to the presupposition of the vacuity implicit to their massive presence in medieval texts, swear words should be considered effective means of truth-telling (II, 8)

This dissertation has as objective to study, in comparative perspective , the works of E?a de Queir?s the "trip" Reports - Egypt, Palestine and High Syria -, everybody published posthumously, and the novel The Relic, published in the author's life. It fits to illuminate that the Portuguese novelist undertook a trip to the East, specifically to Egypt and Palestine, in the middle of 1869, motivated by the inauguration of the Channel of Suez. The annotations done by E?a concerning the places that he knew, in odds papers, they were published firstly by its son Jos? Maria d? E?a de Queiroz, fifty seven years then, entitling them as Egypto. Trip notes (1926). In 1966, the novelist's daughter, Maria E?a de Queiroz de Castro, picked up more notes of this material, composing the book Free Leaves, of which they make part the reports on Palestine and on Syria. In these works they are the author's personal impressions in relation to the that he saw in those distant places paragens. The Relic is already work ficcional published in 1887. In this novel, the narrator-character's trip, Teodorico Raposo, is shown by the Medium East. When doing an comparative analysis among these written, it is noticed that the novelist took advantage of its oriental course to redraft fiction, journalistic and epistle texts. Starting from the reading of the " Reports of Trip " and d?A relic, this dissertation seeks to investigate mapear the eatern imaginary in the works queirosianas, aiming the novelist's insert in the context of the easstern European century XVIII, as well as the influences that the writer received from the main works of French artists that also traveled to the East, to example of Flaubert, Renan and Gautier. He makes himself a literary analysis still comparing the texts of the "Reports of trip" writings for E?a young with the novel The relic, written in the writer's full maturity. They guide this study the theories of the parody, of the intratextualidade and of the irony as structures of the satirical and revision speech, that, it is believed, according to this novel of E?a de Queir?s.

Abstract:
Historian David Bell recently suggested that scholars reconsider the impact of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (1793-1815) upon modern culture, naming them the first "total war" in modern history. My thesis explores the significance of the wars specifically in the British mourning culture of the period by studying the war literature of four women writers: Anna Letitia Barbauld, Amelia Opie, Jane Austen, and Felicia Hemans. This paper further asks how these authors contributed to the development of a national consciousness studied by Georg Lukács, Benedict Anderson, and others. I argue that women had a representative experience of non-combatants' struggle to mourn war deaths occurring in relatively foreign lands and circumstances. Women writers recorded and contributed to this representative experience that aided the development of a national consciousness in its strong sense of shared anxieties and grief for soldiers. Excluded physically and experientially, women would have had an especially difficult time attempting to mourn combatant deaths while struggling to imagine the places and manners in which those deaths occurred, especially when no physical bodies came home to "testify" of their loved ones' experiences. Women writers' literary portraits of imagined women mourning those whose bodies never came home provide interesting insights into the strategies employed during the grieving process and ultimately demonstrate their contribution to a collective British consciousness based on mourning. The questions I explore in the first section of this thesis circle around the idea of women as writers and mourners: What were writers saying about war, death, and mourning? What common themes begin to appear in the women's Romantic war literature? And, perhaps most importantly, how did such mourning literature affect the growing sense of nationality coming out of this period? In the second section, I consider more precisely how these literary contributions affected mourning culture when no bodies were present for burial and advanced the development of a national consciousness that recognized the wars' "nobodies." How did women's experiences of being left behind and marginalized in the war efforts prepare them to conceptualize destructive mass deaths abroad, and, conceptualizing them, to mourn them?

Abstract:
Background: Florence Nightingale (1820 - 1910) was a major advocate for the importance of environment for optimal patient recovery. The modern healthcare environment typically consists of two components, one physical and one psychosocial, where both parts are considered crucial for the patient’s return to health. This is particularly important to bear in mind in the postoperative context and with the experience of postoperative pain, which varies from patient to patient. Nurses are responsible for providing postoperative pain relief, chiefly by nursing, utilizing the health care environment and administering pharmacological painkillers.Aim: The purpose of the study is to describe the importance of the health care environment in relieving newly operated patients postoperative pain.Method: A literature review with qualitative design. The results of the study are based on 15 scientific articles that have been quality reviewed. The scientific articles were searched on CINAHL, PubMed, Web of Science and via manual search. Results: The literature review identified physical care environment with subcategories; patient room and contact with the external environment. In the category psychosocial care environment subcategories; sense of control, relationships and music as distraction as pain-relieving alternatives. Conclusion: The physical and psychosocial health care environment act as a distractive element on the patient and/or have a relieving effect on the postoperative pain.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Anxiety is a common disease that approximately 25% of Sweden's population suffers from at some point in their lives. The treatment methods are few and often imply a pathogenic approach to the patient, such as drug treatment. One of the nurse's area of responsibility is patient care, and according to the nurse's competence description he or she shall promote health and nursing with a salutogenic approach. Integrative medicine, as acupuncture, is aimed at promoting health and the salutogenic. Acupuncture is used today in psychiatry, but is not included in the nurse education, information about treatment and efficacy are expected to be given despite the lack of knowledge. Objective: The objective was that from a patient perspective describe the experience of acupuncture treatment for anxiety. Method: The literature study is based on six qualitative articles, taken from different databases. A manifest content analysis was done to obtain the data from the articles who responded to their purpose and which formed the result. Results: Three categories of patient experience were found, these were: relief, discomfort and hope and well being. The majority of patients experienced a strong anxiety relief and then responds to the purpose of this study. Other experience was that medicine needs were reduced and that the acupuncture treatment gave a sense of hope and increased well being. Some discomfort could appear in the patients. Despite the discomfort, all patients experienced the treatment as very positive. Conclusion: This study proves acupuncture effect on relieving anxiety and positive impact on nursing care. The authors' preconception has become probable. There are weaknesses in the study that concerns generalizability due to the lack of existing research as well as reliability in the authors' lack of experience to carry out a similar study. More research is needed on the subject.

Abstract:
The humor of Mark Twain has long fascinated his readers. Critics such as Messent (2007), Budd (2005), Gerber (1988) and Camfield (2005) have all analyzed Mark Twain’s humor to reveal nuances and to help further the understanding of what makes Twain’s writing humorous. However, there is a distinct gap in the research so far conducted investigating Twain’s humor in relation to young readers, which this paper will begin to address. Twain’s novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (2007) poses a relevant subject for this research as Twain explicitly (in the preface to the novel) professes to write both for children and adults simultaneously. Writing in such a way can be categorized as either “double address” or “dual address”, understanding these terms according to the definitions of Barbara Wall (1991). In this paper I will argue that Mark Twain manages to create “dual address” in Tom Sawyer by using what Greg Camfield (2005) calls “amiable humor” and constructing scenes out of childhood in order to produce delight and nostalgia. By reading closely excerpts of the book and analyzing Twain’s specific use of humor through three prominent theories—superiority theory, relief theory and incongruity— it becomes possible to identify what the implied reader is meant to find humorous, and therefore if Twain manages to establish a “dual address”. An understanding of Twain’s humor from the perspective of both young and adult reader furthers our understanding of the novel by revealing Twain’s implementation of complex “dual address” narration and its implications.

Abstract:
Background: Pain was seen as only a physical problem but in the 1950’s pain began to be seen as a multidimensional problem. For patients in palliative care multidimensional pain is common. The key elements of palliative care should be a focus on: symptom relief, teamwork, continuity and communication as well as support for relatives. Aim: The aim is to compile research about which nursing measures can relieve pain in palliative care. Method: The study was conducted as a literature review and was based on 13 articles where quantitative and qualitative methods where reported. Result: The result is a number of complementary nursing measures that can alleviate pain in patients in palliative care. Knowledge of the pain's dimensions and pain assessment is a prerequisite for achieving optimal pain relief. Teamwork, psychosocial support and good communication between the patient and the careteam are important in palliative care. Conclusion: Patients should receive basic pharmacological pain relief together with complementary non-pharmacological pain management care measures. More research and knowledge about these nursing interventions and how these can be implemented in palliative care are needed. Greater knowledge about both the dimensions of pain and about pain scales is needed so that optimal pain assessment can be achieved.

Beard, Margaret Mary. "Sad relicks and apt admonishments: Wordsworth's depiction of the poor in his work dating from the 1790s to 1807." Thesis, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/11275.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to show, by means of a chronological study of poverty as treated in the poetry dating from the early 1790's to 1807, that Wordsworth's treatment of this topic was both highly politicized and unusually probing. To look at his treatment of poverty is also to gain some understanding of his changing political and social views over these years. He began writing about poverty and the poor in a period in which picturesque and/or sentimental ways of viewing poverty alternated with moralisitically judgmental ways. His approach and attitudes are soon seen to be different. After a period of fervent protest at the very existence of poverty, he proceeds to probe the more hidden costs, to the indigent, of poverty, an approach which is less overtly polemical. This study seeks to demonstrate that this stage is no less committed, and, indeed, comprises an insightful analysis of the social and psychological damage consequent on poverty, damage now widely recognised as one of the major costs of poverty both to the individual and to the state. Furthermore, Wordsworth becomes concerned with the alienation both from the self and from the other consequent on poverty. It is this that he recognises as a major, yet rarely acknowledged, component of poverty. He recognises too, his increasing inability to understand the impoverished other. Conscious of the divide that separates the privileged from the indigent, he can only wonder at, and acknowedge, the powers of endurance of which some seem capable. From such examples he, in his precarious vocation of poet, can learn much. Such admiration of the reolution and independence apparent in some of the indigent leads him to espouse values and judgments which tend to differentiate clearly between the deserving and the undeserving poor. Although such attitudes become increasingly prevalent in Wordsworth after 1807, the work of the preceding years remains a rare, forceful and multi-dimensional cry of protest against poverty.
