Chapter 8 uses the multifaceted term “tones” to explain the expressive role of texts that were produced as part of a growing publication industry to record and circulate various sermons in prose and verse that reflected a master’s awakened state of mind beyond logical thinking. This section also explains the importance of nuanced ink tones for the creation of sparse, monochromatic calligraphy and painting that reveals the interior depths of enlightened engagement with all forms of human and natural existence. Throughout his career, Carlos Santana has used music to express his idiosyncratic spiritual beliefs. Pursuing the guidance of guru Sri Chinmoy in the 1970s and subsequently seeking his own spiritual path, Santana sought to channel a higher power through his guitar technique and tone, describing the process of music making as a mystical endeavor. In order to attain these goals, Santana used amplifiers that prioritized depth of sound (described by himself in synesthetic terms), feedback loops for his signature sustained tones, an avoidance of hypermasculine performance, and a peaceful stage pres

Abstract:
This chapter examines the importance of tone and stroke melody in the rhythmic patterns of South Asian drumming traditions. Many musicians and listeners in South Asia are interested in the relation of what they consider classical music to what they consider folk music. Some emphasize the distinction when wishing to make a point about what constitutes true musical knowledge (usually knowledge associated with the “classical”). This chapter explores the practice of naming and defining drum patterns based on the author's fieldwork in a number of cities, towns, and rural regions in India and Pakist

Abstract:
Vascular tone of glomerular blood vessels is controlled dynamically in response to a number of stimuli of which tubuloglomerular feedback and blood flow (and glomerular filtration rate) autoregulation are the most prominent. Both tubuloglomerular feedback- and myogenic-mediated pre-glomerular vasoconstriction are important in the response to reduced pressure. The renal myogenic mechanism, which has the potential to adjust steady-state tone in response to the oscillating systolic pressure signal, additionally plays an essential role in protecting the kidney from the damaging effects of hyperten

Prosodic phenomena such as stress, tone, and intonation have been the focus of much developmental research as well as theoretical work in phonology. This review presents an overview of research that explores the relationship between the development of prosodic phenomena and linguistic models of phonological structure, particularly, metrical stress theory and autosegmental phonology. The review surveys what is currently known about the developmental course of stress, tone, and intonation in infants and children, introduces research that investigates the role of organizational principles of phon

This chapter concentrates on the non-imperial demand for stone in the Roman world, to provide some context for understanding the imperially orchestrated stone trade. Two related trends underpin the fashion for stone use: a widespread growth in demand for stone of all types, especially during the first three centuries AD; and targeted and disproportionately high demand for high-quality decorative stones. Imperial building projects played a major role in this process, setting the tone for much non-imperial activity; they have the highest densities of decorative stones and have consequently attra

This chapter examines the reception of the Heroides and the psychology of women ‘answering back’ through short stories and through translations. It analyses Michèle Roberts’s reworking of the myth of Jason and Hypsipyle, in which Hypsipyle, far from performing the role of one of Ovid’s abandoned heroines, revels in the independence and freedom of time spent alone while Jason is absent. Such subversion is also apparent in the translations/adaptations of selected Heroides by Clare Pollard, who transposes them to a modern Britain, peopled with domestic goddesses, internet trolls, and bag ladies.

This article reviews recent research exploring children’s abilities to perform approximate arithmetic with non-symbolic and symbolic quantities, and considers what role this ability might play in mathematics achievement. It has been suggested that children can use their approximate number system (ANS) to solve approximate arithmetic problems before they have been taught exact arithmetic in school. Recent studies provide evidence that preschool children can add, subtract, multiply, and divide non-symbolic quantities represented as dot arrays. Children can also use their ANS to perform simple ap

For some 40 years, the role that information structure (IS) plays in the grammatical structure of the ca. 500 Bantu languages has been the topic of considerable research. In this chapter we review the role of prosody, morphology and syntax in expressing IS in Bantu languages. We show that prosodic prominence does not play an important role; rather syntax and morphology are more important. For example, syntactic constructions like clefts and and immediately after the verb position correlate with focus, while dislocations correlate with topic. Among the morphological properties relevant to IS ar
