Abstract:
This thesis has three aims. First, Rosebery's career is presented and analysed with special regard to Scotland. Scotland gave him a base of support and a springboard to power and prestige. In return, he secured attention for Scottish issues and a measure of legislation to redress imbalances. Secondly, Scottish nationalism during Rosebery's prime (1868-1896) is presented and evaluated. This period represents an essential chapter in the history of Scottish nationalism, but to date it has received relatively scant attention. This thesis examines for the first time the role of Sir Frederic William Burton (1816-1900) as director of the National Gallery, London, during the period 1874 to 1894. I argue that his directorship is important because it was followed by the second major administrative re-organisation in the Gallery’s history, namely the Rosebery Minute of 1894, which significantly reduced the authority of the director in making acquisitions. This power had been bestowed upon the director in 1855 after an in-depth parliamentary Select Committee examining the running of the Gallery, which had established the p

The sequence hosting the Rosebery and Hercules orebodies is interpreted as a caldera complex. The felsic "footwall pyroclastics" represent caldera-forming ash-flow tuffs, in part deposited subaerially. Collapse of the caldera led to deposition of tuffaceous sediments over much of the area, and triggered formation of the massive sulphide deposits. A series of quartz-bearing mass flows interrupted the ensuing quiet sedimentary regime, but rapid and systematic variations in thickness of this sequence indicate resurgence of the caldera. The Mt. Sulphide mineralisation is overlain by an intrusive porphyry sill and it contains alteration minerals (carbonate, silica, chlorite, pyrite assemblages) that are related to mineralising fluids and/or mineralising events.
