Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study the non-fictional and epitextual aspects of Michel Houellebecq, Antoine Volodine, Jean-Christophe Rufin, and Boualem Sansal in relation to four of their spectulative fictions. The second part looks at the distinctive political dimension of these author’s fiction, delving into complex autoritarian worlds in works like Globalia, Terminus radieux, Soumission, and 2084 : la fin du monde. Finally, the third part examines how theses fictions investigate the boundary between the imaginary and reality while developing the notion that the art of writing can forge new forms of authority and rekindle the concept of utopia, thus offering a unique perspective of contemporary pollical thought

Gancea, Uliana. Thesis, Paris Est, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PEST0008/document.

Abstract:
The following study analyzes the environment in the novels: Globalia (2004), written by the French novelist Jean-Christophe Rufin and Amor en la Línea Vieja (Love at the Old Rail) (2007), written by the Costa Rican author Walter Rojas Pérez. This research examines the expression of ecological consciousness represented from the authors’ perspectives both in different periods of time (2004/2007) and distinctive places. Below are analyzed the peculiar visions of the Mankind in relationship with the country and the city, accompanied by a corrupt political structure where the inequality of connections influences the ecological unbalance, affecting the natural, anthropic, and human beings’ ecosystems. The novels here studied do not reflect the image of nature viewed as «a green hell»; nonetheless, the natural aspects depict the portrait of a Mother furnishing all the necessary for the humankind’s survival. Thus, the denunciation premises criticize the abuse committed by mankind against the environment, the deforestation of woods, the contamination of hydrographic basins, the indistinct use of agrochemical products, air and land pollution with industrial residue dumped outside as garbage; most likely destructive elements which shorten humankind’s life on the Blue Planet. Both novels accuse the unsustainable exploitation of natural resources by the human conqueror of nature and who serves the globalization goals of the industrialization. This unsustainable development favors the ecological imbalance which leads to the disappearance of uncountable species dying without having ever been studied, taking away the opportunity to the future generations to have even known them. The texts register how the economically poor human beings devastate the nature and give into the economic power for the need to survive, and to finally become “un-people”. Global poverty is such that “three quarters of the world population live in the Third World, which stands for more than two thirds of the earth’s surface” (Stokke 19). The lucky ones, supported by certain people in power, manipulate the citizens by means of transnational companies, and –using the excuse of modernization- they steal nature’s resources. Therefore, when these living beings stop serving the petty interests of the rich, they are laid off without any benefits, directly affecting their human ecology and that of their families; consequently, the underprivileged have no other alternative but to join certain at-risk settlements, live as recycled garbage, and eat from the industrialization’s waste. The Earth embodies a living being that pertains to a universal ecosystem and which requires its own sustainable space, within a healthy ecological environment. The planet’s stability is of supreme importance to the rest of the species that live together on it. This is the ecocritical discourse that the novelists Rufin and Rojas Pérez desire to transmit, hoping to perpetuate the terrestrial viability that all species could enjoy the nectar which maintains it strong. The novelists’ denunciation awakens the consciousness for preserving the Blue Planet’s ecological balance. Moreover, the environmental-literary discourse goes beyond the terrestrial frontiers, getting to the Earth’s cosmic and universal worlds, as the one that appears in the novel Globalia. A defined cosmological reality surges in Amorn en la Línea Vieja, when –from an inextricable point of vegetation on Earth- one may go through a tunnel onto another dimension where friendly beings interact with each other. On that terrestrial-universal world, the vegetation resembles the one known on Earth, and where the characters Ion and Elena welcome Nuria as member of their family, thus giving Nuria the opportunity to coexist with an interplanetary society of common root species. Both Globalia and Amor en la Línea Vieja pass on to the new generations a clear ecocritical message: they are dedicated to save the global habitat

Abstract:
This dissertation addresses the loss of definition of public spaces within the urban enviroments due, in large part, to increased privatisation. Using the Baixa of the city of Maputo, Mozambique as its laboratory, the alienated amd abandoned spaces within the urban fabric which result in these voids will be explored. Critical theory relating to the manner in which we appropriate and define sapces within our urban enviroment will be explored as this dissertation seeks to establish a connection between the architectural realm and its surrounding public landscape. An architecture which explores the reconnection of place to space will be saught through the investigation f the series of thresholds that occur between the two. Specifically, this exploration will be through the lens of the adaptive re-use of a historically significant landmark within the urban core and its ability to be re-integrated into a contemporary urban landscape.
Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2011.
Architecture
unrestricted

In an important way, this thesis asks the question of how a new form can be built or introduced as the survival of the previous form. The first part describes the ruin generally, and in terms of a formal arrangement of relations undergoing change in a landscape and within the context of culture. The second part describes an approach to seeing the ruin which is singular, absolute and rooted in the romantic experience. The third part describes a relational and more relativistic approach. It is one which directs toward an understanding of design. The fourth part reveals a specific ruin of a contemporary nature that exists outside Lausanne, Switzerland. It describes, through design, a relational bridge between what exists and what is made to exist, or those "facts" which reveal temporal and spatial relationships between older and newer forms. The fifth part describes comparable references as the survival of the design, or as relational facts through which to describe the design further.
by Barry W. Stanton.
M.Arch.

Abstract:
Frostig e Denuit (2009) é a principal referência bibliográfica. Alguns resultados significativos são observados.
This work intends to combine two major topics under the actuarial framework: life annuities and ruin theory, as to determine the probability of financial ruin for life annuities' portfolios. Two main perspectives may be considered: the household's and the life insurance company's, for which different models apply. Time constraints and limitations on text length became the reason why only the company's perspective has been explored, using a classic individual risk model. After an extensive literature review the basics on life annuities and ruin theory are explained and a case study is toiled. Firstly, the theoretical framework is developed, with a useful result, not found in the literature, being obtained; and finally, the application follows. The problem to be solved consists broadly in studying whether reserves are high enough to keep the ruin probability under control, when considering a given insurer's portfolio of life annuities, divided into homogeneous groups. This is done in two different ways: computing the ruin probabilities, given the initial reserve; and finding the initial reserves' allocation amongst the groups that maximizes the survival probabilities. Frostig and Denuit (2009) is the main reference. Some significant results are observed.

Yee, Sandra M. "Greedy Hunger and Happy Ruin." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/52859.

Full text
Abstract:
Greedy Hunger and Happy Ruin is a collection of poems that gathers a life of fragments and frayed ends into a loose narrative of desire, loss, language, and almost redemption. The poems examine the costs of leaving home, as seen in a mermaid's wish to become human, an immigrant family's aspirations of upward mobility, and an immigrant daughter's hunger for U.S. American social/lingual fluency, male attention, and erasure of her difference. The collection follows speakers who, hungry for homes they cannot return to, navigate a landscape crowded with fairy tales, biblical myth, filial duty, and pop culture in search of the perfect lover or dress to transform them from brokenness to wholeness. As they strive for such unattainable ideals, however, these speakers inevitably end up homeless and/or scarred, as exemplified by Joyce Wildenstein's plastic surgery excesses. The speakers in these poems rue their missed chances, lost loves, ageing bodies, and crowded histories of wrong men. They offer their sins in confession but are unsure whether such disclosure can free them from the mistakes that haunt them. Ultimately, Greedy Hunger and Happy Ruin begins to question what we choose to covet and how we choose to reflect on our pasts. The poems' speakers must confront the fantasies and ambitions that govern their lives and discover that transformation and absolution come not from a radiant external source but internal shifts of perspective, moment by moment, memory by memory, towards an embrace of the loss and longing (and joy) that make us human.
Master of Fine Arts

Lavery, Andrew. "Unmasking Modernity through Urban Ruin." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2021. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/27497.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a visual artist’s investigation into the role of urban ruin as the site of revelation and redemption from the impacts of capitalist modernity on urban communities. The urban ruin of Sydney’s gentrifying suburbs is the focus of the visual exploration of this research. The research connects approaches to urban ruin in contemporary art with a succession of traditions, starting with those of ruin in art in antiquity. It seeks to reveal how decay and decrepitude have shaped narratives and critiques concerned with human history and societal development. The thesis posits new ways of working with and interpreting urban ruin in contemporary art through its exploration of Marxian theory, especially as adopted by Walter Benjamin and Henri Lefebvre. The research started with the overarching question—How can an artist unmask the reality of modernity through urban ruin? It developed along the following trajectory: • What has been the role of ruin in art since antiquity? • How have artists addressed capitalist modernity through the urban ruin? • Can historical materialism expand readings of contemporary art practice? • How can a practising artist create new forms in contemporary art through an engagement with seminal practice and historical materialist discourse? The thesis accomplishes a major contribution to knowledge; it is a definitive study which combines four elements: an application of a framework of historical materialism to urban ruin; an analysis of Benjamin’s and Lefebvre’s novel approach to urban ruin; an investigation of contemporary art concerned with urban ruin, from the seminal works of Robert Smithson in the 1970s through to contemporary practice; and four artworks produced in cross-pollination with the research. The artworks of this thesis aim to unmask the reality of modernity through the Marxian aesthetics of urban ruin in select gentrifying suburbs of Sydney—Bondi, Marrickville, Millers Point and Arncliffe.

Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on the Voortrekker road strip between Salt River Circle and the Black river. It is bounded by the railway lines on the western side, and the Black River and M5 elevated freeway bridge on the eastern side of the strip. The Voortrekker road bridge over the railway line creates a blatant disconnected neighbourly association. The area is currently in a state of decay, plagued by abandoned buildings and crime. Within this focus area I have highlighted 3 key sites of interest, both for their location adjacent to defining natural and man made boundary elements, as well as their state of neglect and ruin or being underutilized. The urban strategy of this project will attempt to uplift and transform this abandoned area by stitching together the two edges of the strip with a pedestrian orientated, contrasting intervention, that inverts the existing ruin, creating a series of relief spaces within this harsh environment. The architectural intervention would address each ruin by inverting them into public space with individual responses and programs, incorporating predominantly a mixed use transport orientated development with housing and rentable spaces above and retail/ market on ground floor. All the sites will use the same technological and structural approach of a light adaptive socially performing structural frame that connects this disconnected, scarred context. The buried, dark and grungy social & material context is thus resurfaced through this light, uplifting, vertical transition. This architectural transition also carefully uses structure and tactility, with walls that grow out of the existing ruined landscape and protect the site. The social user then inhabits this structure and controls or changes their own space to suit their needs within this new vertical spatial framework.

Abstract:
We study the infinite time ruin probability for an insurance company in the classical Cramér-Lundberg model with finite exponential moments. The additional non-classical feature is that the company is also allowed to invest in some stock market, modeled by geometric Brownian motion. We obtain an exact analogue of the classical estimate for the ruin probability without investment, i.e., an exponential inequality. The exponent is larger than the one obtained without investment, the classical Lundberg adjustment coefficient, and thus one gets a sharper bound on the ruin probability. A surprising result is that the trading strategy yielding the optimal asymptotic decay of the ruin probability simply consists in holding a fixed quantity (which can be explicitly calculated) in the risky asset, independent of the current reserve. This result is in apparent contradiction to the common believe that 'rich' companies should invest more in risky assets than 'poor' ones. The reason for this seemingly paradoxical result is that the minimization of the ruin probability is an extremely conservative optimization criterion, especially for 'rich' companies. Abstract:
In this thesis, ruin probabilities of insurance companies are studied. Ruin proba- bility in finite time is considered because it is more realistic compared with infinite time ruin probabilities. However, infinite time methods are also mentioned in order to compare them with the finite time methods. The thesis will initially provide some information about ruin probability of a risk process in finite and infinite time, and then the Markov chain and quantum mechan- ics approaches will be shown in order to compute the ruin probability. Using a reinsurance agreement, which is a risk sharing tool in actuarial science, the ruin probability of a modified surplus process in finite time via the quantum mechanics approach is studied. Furthermore, some optimization problems about capital injections, withdrawals and reinsurance premiums are taken into considera- tion in order to minimise the ruin probability. Finally, the thesis compares the finite time method under the reinsurance agreement in terms of the ruin probability and total injections amount with an infinite time counterpart method.

Abstract:
Groundspace to bury the deceased has become a rare commodity. As an alternative, cemeteries are beginning to build large high density mausoleums to house the dead above ground. As I began to study the building type of a mausoleum, an issue perturbed me: As time passes, the loved ones of the deceased will pass on and no longer come to visit or care for the building. Most likely there will be a lack of funds, the building will no longer be maintained. The building will eventually deteriorate and become a ruin. What happens to the mortal remains? The conventional cemetery does not have to consider this issue, as the bodies are simply allowed to deteriorate in the ground, and the grave marker is able to withstand much more abuse than a building. The manner in which I have addressed this issue is to design the mausoleum to potentially become a ruin, and thus the mortal remains are returned to the earth. “FOR DUST YOU ARE AND TO DUST YOU WILL RETURN.” (GEN 3:19 NIV)
Master of Architecture

Abstract:

Nurses sometimes question their presence during the ward round and understanding of the importance of their professional role is required as motivation. In spite of the ward rounds’ potential for care development it lacks recognition as an important research area. The aim was to study the ward round as a phenomenon. A literature review was conducted using 13 papers. The findings reveal that the ward round was conducted as a routine part and was never cancelled. It consisted of mainly three functions; planning and evaluation of the patient care, a pedagogical function and a coordinating function. The format affected patients experience and participation. Nurses often felt excluded, experienced difficulties in providing information and rarely contributed to decision making. Nurses’ contribution in the ward round was essential and increased patient safety. Common tools for communication, documentation and risk analysis within the care team have been developed to improve the ward round. There were patients and staffs who were dissatisfied with the format and there existed anxiousness during the ward round and lack of knowledge about the meaning and purpose in both groups. The ward round needs to be highlighted in education and students need to practice communication with other care team members. Professionals should promote patient participation and understanding during the ward round. Future research should include a nursing perspective and address how the ward round could be used as an effective tool and how to promote teamwork.

Wong, Tsun-yu Jeff, and 黃峻儒. "On some Parisian problems in ruin theory." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/206448.

Abstract:
Traditionally, in the context of ruin theory, most judgements are made on an immediate sense. An example would be the determination of ruin, in which a business is declared broke right away when it attains a negative surplus. Another example would be the decision on dividend payment, in which a business pays dividends whenever the surplus level overshoots certain threshold. Such scheme of decision making is generally being criticized as unrealistic from a practical point of view. The Parisian concept is therefore invoked to handle this issue. This idea is deemed more realistic since it allows certain delay in the execution of decisions. In this thesis, such Parisian concept is utilized on two different aspects. The first one is to incorporate this concept on defining ruin, leading to the introduction of Parisian ruin time. Under such a setting, a business is considered ruined only when the surplus level stays negative continuously for a prescribed length of time. The case for a fixed delay is considered. Both the renewal risk model and the dual renewal risk model are studied. Under a mild distributional assumption that either the inter arrival time or the claim size is exponentially distributed (while keeping the other arbitrary), the Laplace transform to the Parisian ruin time is derived. Numerical example is performed to confirm the reasonableness of the results. The methodology in obtaining the Laplace transform to the Parisian ruin time is also demonstrated to be useful in deriving the joint distribution to the number of negative surplus causing or without causing Parisian ruin. The second contribution is to incorporate this concept on the decision for dividend payment. Specifically, a business only pays lump-sum dividends when the surplus level stays above certain threshold continuously for a prescribed length of time. The case for a fixed and an Erlang(n) delay are considered. The dual compound Poisson risk model is studied. Laplace transform to the ordinary ruin time is derived. Numerical examples are performed to illustrate the results.
published_or_final_version
Statistics and Actuarial Science
Master
Master of Philosophy

Gravity plays an essential role in creating time in architecture: it gives physicality to the transience, allows time to be experienced with one's senses and imagination. In that sense, time is neither metaphorical and prescriptive, but physical and personal. Using the physical context of Fort Point Channel as the stimulus for intellectual thinking, the thesis project strives to discover how the idea of an urban ruin can inspire new forms of spatial-temporal experience. The physical and spiritual qualities of the Greek temples, in particular the Doric Order, are analyzed in order to understand the fundamentals in architecture such as Absence, Gravity and the Order of space and matter. Through the resurrection of time and memory in architecture, the new archetype allows one to become closer in touch with his senses, thus finding purpose to his own existence.
by Danny C. Abstract:
My study consists of an inquiry into archaeology and palaeontology, and the relationship of 'the dig' to landscape. I focus on the idea that digging or excavating is a process that can reveal ancient landscapes and suggest new narratives. My research revolves around ruin discourse, and the idea that a 'dig' is a sort of ruin in reverse. I began thinking about the criteria that define a ruin and applying them to landscapes. The study culminated in the idea of the landscape being a kind of ruin itself; the experience of a ruin, or ruinenlust, isn't only about a structure that has been dragged down into the ground over time- it's also about light, temperature, plants, views - all the elements that make up our experience of landscape. I set about trying to turn this study into a project - how do I design the idea that all landscapes are ruins? The ideas I had explored of excavation, and especially the image of the 'grid' of excavation as an imposition over the landscape, led me to the Higgovale Quarry site.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the study of Generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck(GOU) processes and their application in ruin theory. The GOU processes, which are the solutions of certain linear stochastic differential equations, havebeen introduced in ruin theory by Paulsen in 1993 as models for the surpluscapital of insurance companies facing both insurance and market risks. In general, these processes were chosen as suitable models on ana prioribasis. The first and main contribution of this thesis is to show that GOUprocesses appear naturally as weak limits of random coefficient autoregres-sive processes which are used extensively in various domains of applied prob-ability. Using this result, the convergence in distribution of the ruin times, the convergence of the ultimate ruin probability and the moments are alsoshown. The rest of the thesis deals with the study of certain properties of GOU pro-cesses. In particular, the ruin problem for the GOU process is studied andnew bounds on the ruin probabilities are obtained. These results also general-ize some known upper bounds, asymptotic results and conditions for certainruin to the case when the market risk is modelled by a semimartingale. The final section of the thesis moves away from classical ruin theory and layssome first directions for the study of the law of GOU processes at fixed times. In particular, a partial integro-differential equation for the density, large andsmall-time asymptotics are obtained for these laws. This shift away fromthe ruin probability is explained by the fact that most risk measures used inpractice such as Value-at-Risk are based on these laws instead

Abstract:
In this thesis, we develop with literary categories the polemical aspect of Saint Jerome’s Apology against Rufinus, whose author was an important Latin Father of the Fourth Century of our era, an important author of Late Antiquity and Christian Latin Literature. We describe the variety of gender aspects employed by Saint Jerome in order to construct his Apology against Rufinus text, such as the apologetic gender, the cynic-stoical diatribe, the aristotelic rhetorical genders, the satire and the epistle. Because the text is a place where we find debate, refutations and invective, we submitted it to intertextual analysis, and the result was an interesting dialogue between Jerome and his ex-friend Rufinus and also no less interesting cultural background of the epoch in which the text appeared. This work contains stylistic analysis with analyses on the Christian Latin Language, the figures of speech, the expressive ressources of Saint Jerome language, the classical and biblical motifs, the presence of the beasts, in such a way of reconstituting the formal and expressive process of Apologia’s text. Our work rescues in formal aspects a good portion of the contents and the polemical construction of the Apology against Rufinus.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The work presented in this dissertation is motivated by the observation that the classical (re)insurance risk modelling assumptions of independent and identically distributed claim amounts, Poisson claim arrivals and premium income accumulating linearly at a certain rate, starting from possibly non-zero initial capital, are often not realistic and violated in practice. There is an abundance of examples in which dependence is observed at various levels of the underlying risk model. Developing risk models which are more general than the classical one and can successfully incorporate dependence between claim amounts, consecutively arriving at the insurance company, and/or dependence between the claim inter-arrival times, is at the heart of this dissertation. The main objective is to consider such general models and to address the problem of (non-) ruin within a finite-time horizon of an insurance company. Furthermore, the aim is to consider general risk and performance measures in the context of a risk sharing arrangement such as an excess of loss (XL) re insurance contract. There are two parties involved in an XL re insurance contract and their interests are contradictory, as has been first noted by Karl Borch in the 1960s. Therefore, we define joint, between the cedent and the reinsurer, risk and performance measures, both based on the probability of ruin, and show how the latter can be used to optimally set the parameters of an XL reinsurance treaty. Explicit expressions for the proposed risk and performance measures are derived and are used efficiently in numerical illustrations.

Abstract:
In the literature of ruin theory, there have been extensive studies trying to generalize the classical insurance risk model. In this thesis, we look into two particular risk processes considering multi-dimensional risk and dependent structures respectively. The first one is a bivariate risk process with a dividend barrier, which concerns a two-dimensional risk model under a barrier strategy. Copula is used to represent the dependence between two business lines when a common shock strikes. By defining the time of ruin to be the first time that either of the two lines has its surplus level below zero, we derive a discrete approximation procedure to calculate the expected discounted dividends until ruin under such a model. A thorough discussion of application in proportional reinsurance with numerical examples is provided as well as an examination of the joint optimal dividend barrier for the bivariate process. The second risk process is a semi-Markovian dual risk process. Assuming that the dependence among innovations and waiting times is driven by a Markov chain, we analyze a quantity resembling the Gerber-Shiu expected discounted penalty function that incorporates random variables defined before and after the time of ruin, such as the minimum surplus level before ruin and the time of the first gain after ruin. General properties of the function are studied, and some exact results are derived upon distributional assumptions on either the inter-arrival times or the gain amounts. Applications in a perpetual insurance and the last inter-arrival time before ruin are given along with some numerical examples.
published_or_final_version
Statistics and Actuarial Science
Master
Master of Philosophy

In this dissertation we discuss the Ruin Theory, considering the classic collective risk model developed by Cramér and Lundberg, in which the number of claims that occur until a period of time t is modeled by a homogeneous Poisson process. We can say that an insurance company is in ruin if its reserve became negative at some instant t. The probability of this event to occur is called the ruin probability. Since it is difficult to find an explicit expression for the ruin probability of an insurance company, we present some numerical approaches for its estimation that are available in the literature. Also we show in this work how a reinsurance contract can alter the insurance company’s ruin probability. The effectiveness of the estimators of the ruin probabilities is verified with simulated data, where it is assumed different probabilist models for the claims.
