Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to address performance practice, and develop a systematic approach to the preparation of three pieces composed for the Morceaux de Concours at the Paris Conservatory. The pieces were written by former students of the conservatory. Each composition features distinct musical and technical challenges for the trumpet. Solo de Concours written by Theo Charlier requires the performer to play musically in a variety of ranges, dynamics, and articulations. For this work, exercises were composed to address these demands. Morceau de Concours by Augustin Savard is technically less challenging but requires mastery of phrasing and lip flexibility. Finally, Legend requires the most preparation out of the three works examined. The composition requires a performer to have established solid trumpet fundamentals. For this piece, dynamic exercises, a chromatic etude and multiple tonguing exercises were developed to equip the trumpeter with the skills needed to excel in the performance of these works.

Abstract:
The title Savage Ballet came into being because, so far as I articulate, it aptly describes the beauty and horror that are borne from combining art and instruction. Poetry, itself, is a ballet. And poetry, itself, is savage. It is a ballet of words carefully choreographed and practiced and spun into being. Poetry is the body politic of the ballet. It is beautiful and often fancy when the curtain rises, but behind the scenes and tucked into toe shoes is the instruction – the gnashing of teeth and blisters and broken nails. Thus, the savage side of poetry presents itself. And, may it also be said, graduate school is a savage beast. It wrestles and tests and knocks down to build up. And, if the dancer is lucky, they will rise.

Miles, Cressida Serena. "The savage body." Thesis, Lancaster University, 1997. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.274269.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis makes a contribution to the spatio-analysis of contemporary cultures that creatively and reflexively experiment with the surface of the body. Drawing upon the philosophical work of Henri Lefebvre, The Savage Body provides an exploration of representational space. Lefebvre considered this element of social relations to be clandestine and transgressive, relating to the aesthetic sphere of symbols and codes. For Lefebvre, these spaces were lived through associated imagery, embracing passion, pleasure and dismay. This thesis provides an exploration of two distinct, yet related representational spaces. The Fetish Scene is a culture that has a more bounded sense of symbolic community and dwells within the night-time sexual economy of club land. In comparison, the Pierced Body is a more fragmented sphere, scattered and located within a diverse cultural landscape. Though separate cultures, these two spaces overlap in the Torture Garden, a night-club on the periphery and cutting edge of the fetish scene. It is within this realm that the fetish people and pierced bodies meet to celebrate the pleasures of the flesh. This work explores the way these cultural sites are produced through the creativity of those involved and the subjective relation to representational space. The body is considered as actively weaving its way through landscapes which both mark and leave their mark on those engaging in these spheres. Beyond mapping out the cultures of the Fetish Scene and the Pierced Body on a descriptive and broad level, I also consider identity as reflexively situated within representational space and the way that memory plays an active part in constructing narratives that operate on an individual and broader cultural level. Developing the idea of a 'haptic ethnography', drawing upon a variety of methods, I have used and documented my own body as a means of exploring these rhythmic realms, speaking with the Other instead of for the Other.

This paper is an interpretation of the body and its interrelationships with eroticism and love, from a dialogue with the book Linha-d’Água (1987), by Olga Savary (1933). The hypothesis this research articulates the poetic transfiguration of the body under the symbolic element of water as a poetic-ontological staging of the principle of unity between man and nature. Through a hermeneutic approach (RICOEUR, 1990), it is perceived in the poems a opening for textual articulation of a being in the world (being-there), with respect to the dynamics of human existence. The work of art operates a poetic recreation of bodies in the prevailing presence of the water, so that the loving communion establishes an approximation of the human being with its origin as a possibility of reconciliation with nature (PAZ, 1994). To compose this dialogue, we oppose a ecofeminism reading, which understands this operation as a poetic expression of subjectivities related to issues of gender or social roles (SOARES, 1999). Through the erotic impetus, human bodies are compared to a donation of nature, understood as unveiling of what the Greeks called phýsis (HEIDEGGER, 1999). The verses of Linha-d'Água articulate a movement that breaks with the conceptual legacy of Platonic metaphysics, which established a division, that has deepened in the modernity, between man and his carnal condition, between man and the reality. Amid the incessant cyclical dynamics of phýsis, Man must recognize itself in the liquidity of your body the return to primordial basis; on the other hand, he also must assume its condition of being released on the incessant temporal flow. In Savary's work, the human horizon is reinserted, through bodily experience, in reconciliation with that original impulse of nature and, at the same time, with the own living nature of lovers.

Abstract:

Savant syndrome is a rare condition in which some people have extraordinary talents despite some serious mental or physical disability. It is a syndrome with remarkable features, standing in stark contrast to a person’s overall character. The term savant, or idiot savant, describes a person who, in spite of low intelligence, has a skill in some specific narrow area. Savants can have a specific talent in, for instance, music, art, calendar calculation or foreign language but whatever the specific talent is, it is always connected to extraordinary memory. Savant syndrome seems to be also connected to autism or autistic characteristics. In this paper I aim to give a clear description of the savant syndrome and explain its connection to autism. Further, I present how specific theories try to describe the causes of savant syndrome, and connect the theories to results of empirical research in order to give an overall view of the syndrome’s appearance. I will also compare the theories and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses with respect to the discoveries and progress that has been made within the area of savant syndrome research.

Abstract:
This thesis aimed to investigate possible cognitive underpinnings of sayant skills in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Since savant skills are overrepresented amongq individuals with ASD, several cognitive functions thought to be intact or enhanced in these individuals were hypothesised to contribute to savant skill development. In particular, central coherence, implicit learning, perceptual functioning, and infonnation processing speed were assessed in a group of nonsavant children with ASD (n=28), age, IQ, and gender (group-wise) matched controls (n=28), a group of typicall~' developing children (n=64), and finally a series of four savants with ~~SD. Consistent with previous reports, weak central coherence, Intact implicit learning and infonnation processing speed, and particularly good ability to reproduce a time window were shown in both savant and nons avant individuals with ASD. Savants also showed indications of good memory and idiosyncratic sensory functioning. As predicted, there was evidence that infonnation processing speed was IQ independent in ASD whereas it was significantly related to IQ in both comparison groups. There was also preliminary indication, via correlations and subgroup analyses, of cross modal central coherence, particularly within the ASD group. A "gateway model", in which certain cognitive functions need to be intact (or superior) in order for individuals (especially those with ASD) to develop savant skills, was proposed to account for these findings. The present findings are preliminary in nature but provide indications that certain cognitive functions more characteristic of the cognitive profile in .\SD may be necessary but insufficient for savant skill development.

Abstract:
Stokvel, in South Africa, is used as an umbrella term for Rotating Savings and Credit Associations (ROSCAs) and Accumulating Savings and Credit Associations (ASCAs) which are informal financial associations where the members agree to regularly contribute a set amount to a fund. In South Africa, there are 11.4 million stokvel members which make up about 30% of the adult population. These stokvels save up to R49 billion per year yet, many of the people in these communities that save this money find themselves unable to gain access to credit and savings facilities. An agile and iterative approach was used to develop a web-based stokvel management application that allows groups to adopt a structure where there are borrowers who pay interest, and savers and investors who will receive interest on their savings. Four different evaluations were carried out on the system namely, (1) system testing, to evaluate the implemented features and their correctness, (2) a heuristic evaluation with a set of expert evaluators, (3) usability testing and (4) user acceptance testing with potential users of the application. The evaluators and users gave the application a combined score of 76.875, which translates to a good interface on the System Usability Scale. The users accepted the application, however, the system usability testing showed that the interface needed improvement. The system was developed using multiple iterations but time constraints did not allow for multiple iterations of user testing. It is best to have multiple iterations of user testing so that the user experience feedback can be incorporated into the following iterations

Abstract:
When I create art it is as though I am building a metaphorical cathedral. Although there is serenity and faith within the process, there simultaneously exists an equal measure of frustration and mystery in the final outcome. At times I am like an ancient Chinese monk who, scrambling to please a merciless emperor, stumbles at last upon his pet cricket’s cage and using this accidental inspiration designs the perfect plan for the Forbidden City. My art then, at its best, possesses the rigidity of ritual, the flexibility of enlightenment and the joy of invention. I believe in the power of symbolism and in its ability to deliver a clear and consistent message throughout the ages. This concept has driven me to create a pastoral robe fashioned from men’s ties, a Lenten calendar derived from ancient Christian symbols, as well as a collection of clay cups paired with linoleum block prints in memory of a Finnish love affair. Perhaps what I strive for most in my artistic life is to produce artwork that attains spiritual truth accessible to the wisest of professors and the humblest of peasants.

Full text
Abstract:
Designing the elements of a theatrical production is a unique and often experimental process. This process changes from show to show, and it can be difficult for a viewer to differentiate mistakes from design choices without a background in lighting. That is why it is important to take a look at the design process step by step. Two goals I strove for when designing Savage In Limbo were, how the director's concept blended with a design and if the integrity of the designer's vision was evident on stage. To explore these goals, script analysis and consideration of the director's vision are two very important processes. Additionally, an exploration of the design process will better describe the growth and personal achievements of the design. This thesis will show the process of the lighting design for The University of Central Florida's 2011 production of John Patrick Shanley's Savage In Limbo. The project will highlight the design achievements and the goals explained previously, and create a formal dialogue on this specific design in order to provide insight into the process. When analyzing the design it was important that I assessed the process as well as the product by looking at whether the design met the expectations of the script and audience. This thesis will also explore how my past experiences, education and current skill level have prepared me for this design process in order to create a guideline for others interested in the development of knowledge needed for design.

Music Composition
D.M.A.
A monograph on the musical composition How We Saved the World, a multimedia musical drama written by the author, describes in detail the history of the writing of the piece, its context within his development as a composer, its context within our times, the writing and structure of the libretto, the characters and character types within the piece, their relationships with one another, the music of the piece and its construction. The two hour long composition requires 44 performers to stage: 14 singers, 8 dancers, and a conducted 21 piece orchestra. In addition to traditional acoustic instruments (winds, brass, percussion, strings) the orchestra includes electric guitars, drum set, and audio and video laptop performers. How We Saved the World is situated in a future time and begins with the premise that the world has been saved. Human beings have found a way to live in peace and harmony with one another and with the ecology of our planet Earth. We, the participants in the performance are sharing among ourselves the story of how human culture changed from the destructive, unsustainable practices and consciousness of the past. The libretto is included as an appendix. The score and all of the audio files needed to perform the piece are included as supplementary material.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Current studies of T. S. Eliot explore his social poetic, his religion, his sexuality, and his place in the history of modernism and contemporary poetics. "T. S. Eliot's Civilized Savage" links these interests, beginning with Eliot's controversial masculinity. Eliot constructs an impotent poet who engages in celibate heterosexual relationships; he uses comparative religious studies (such as Frazer's Golden Bough and Harrison's Themis) to transform these relationships into a social imperative. "The Death of Saint Narcissus," "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and "Hysteria" compare Eliot's poet to Frazer's self-sacrificing god, pitting him against a voracious mother goddess who demands the poet's self-sacrifice. Eliot's lady poses as an alibi for his own hysteria and as a spiritual catalyst; the poet is reborn in the Father. By Ash Wednesday, Eliot rewrites heterosexuality using Christian iconography. "Tradition and the Individual Talent" exposes Eliot's ambivalent relationship to masculinity and maternity: though Eliot describes a purely scientific poetic reproduction, the essay bears traces of his maternal fascinations, though these images are sterilized by the rhetoric of Immaculate Conception. By 1927, Eliot converts to the Church of England, abandons Vivienne, rekindles a chaste romance with Emily Hale, develops his poetry of confession, and refashions the Lady. Now she acts as the perfect vessel for God's Word, and her "torn and most whole" body eliminates the threat of sexual intercourse. Subsumed in her, Eliot's poet becomes God's womb. Eliot's contemporary fall from grace seems to stem from repeated exposures of his erotic and religious masquerades. Christopher Ricks's publication of Eliot's notebooks foregrounds Eliot's racist, sexist and classicist ideology and Michael Hastings's Tom and Viv suggests that Eliot blamed his hysteria on Vivienne while profiting from the marriage. Eliot's mysticism appears to be an impotent attempt to escape domestic horrors, but a re-examination of this diagnosis may reveal our own construction of sexuality, poetics, politics and spirituality. As we recoil from Eliot's corrosive "conservatism" perhaps we safeguard our own.

Wilmoth, Traci Carol. "The Role of Richard Savage in Composing Pope's Dunciad." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32080.

Full text
Abstract:
Murderer, bastard, spy: Richard Savage was no stranger to scandal and controversy. And yet, for a man who lived such a varied life, little is known for certain about him. There are rumors, suggestions, and accusations, but little that can be said without debates and arguments. It certainly does not help that Savage is often marginalized in eighteenth-century scholarship as scholars seek to discover and analyze all they can about his more famous, and more upstanding, contemporaries. While Savage's relationship with Johnson is well known and discussed frequently, all that is known of his relationship with Pope is that he contributed information to Popeâ s Dunciad Variorum (1729) and that Pope later contributed large sums to Savage's support. Pope was the driving force behind Savageâ s retirement to Wales, possibly alluded to in Johnsonâ s London (1738), as well as the chief financial contributor to this retirement plan. No serious effort has been made to connect these two important episodes in Savage's life, perhaps because no serious effort has been made to establish the extent of his involvement with the Dunciad. It may have been this connection with Pope that drew Johnson to Savage in the first place. The intent of this thesis is to clarify the nature of Savageâ s collaborations with Pope and the extent of his contributions to the Dunciad Variorum of 1729. The Dunciad seeks to make fun not only of Popeâ s critics, but of writers who write for bread, the â hack writersâ of Grub Street. It was here that Pope would most likely turn to Savage for information; Savage was much better acquainted with those writers than was Pope. But Savage may have done more than simply supply Pope with gossip, and I will consider the possibility that he had a more active role in the publication of the Dunciad Variorum.

The aims of this thesis were: to investigate the heterogeneity of soils and to evaluate the contribution of clonal growth to the population dynamics of woody species under contrasting soil conditions. In the Cerrado-Pantanal ecotone (15º43 S; 56º04 W), the soil possesses typical features from both the soil of Cerrado in the Central Plateau and the soil of the Pantanal Plain. Given the variability of soil and pluviosity, our hypothesis is that clonal growth is the demographic parameter that most contributes to the population growth rate () of five woody species in this ecotone area. This study was carried out in five Cerrado areas. We identified four soil categories; three of them typic Litoplinthic Petric Plintosol, typic Dystrophic Yellow Latosol and Dystrophic Yellow Latosol with plinthite had not yet been described for the study site. The chemical attributes aluminum saturation, magnesium, calcium, pH and manganese explained 38.7% of the variability of the soils in the study sites. The spatial distribution of the edaphic attributes was heterogeneous. These attributes differed between the soils in the Cerrado Pantanal ecotone and the soils of Cerrado in the Central Plateau and of the Pantanal Plain. The population dynamics of Curatella americana, a dominant species with wide geographical distribution, was evaluated in Petric Plintosol (P) and in Yellow Latosol (L), in the dry and rainy seasons. Sexual reproduction and seedling growth were higher in P, whereas clonal growth was higher in L. The population growth rate (λ) was higher in P. The adult survival rate exerted the strongest effect on λ for the two soil categories and the dry and rainy seasons. The interaction between soil category and pluviosity exerted the strongest effect on λ. We also analyzed the dynamics of species with small populations (Bowdichia virgilioides and Roupala montana) and large populations (Curatella americana and Caryocar brasiliense), to determine which demographic parameters characterize woody clonal species with different sizes. For the species with small populations, the rate of sexual reproduction and the density of all life stages were smaller, whereas the clonal growth was higher. Small populations were more susceptible to variations in soil and pluviosity. The rates that most contributed to the λ of Bowdichia virgilioides and Roupala montana in L and P were: respectively, the survival of young ramets and immatures, in the dry season; and for both species, the survival of adults, in the rainy season. For C. americana and C.brasiliense, the survival of adults was the parameter that most contributed to λ, independently of soil category and season. The study indicated an heterogeneity of the superficial layer of the soil and of the soil categories that occur in this area. Soils with contrasting attributes exerted an important effect on the dynamics of woody clonal species. The survival of young and immature individuals, originated from clonal growth, was the rate that most contributed to the λ of the small-sized populations of woody clonal species B. virgilioides and R. montana , whereas the survival of adults was the rate that most contributed to the λ of the large-sized populations C. americana and C. brasiliense.

A trajetória sucessional depende do grupo funcional dominante inicialmente?
There are still many gaps to the restoration of savannas, and understanding community trajectories in areas under restoration is a key information to improve restoration methods. Most assembly models for savannas consider only regeneration after natural disturbances, when species are able to resprout, usually focusing on succession from herbaceous to tree layer. However, in severely disturbed areas, resprouting ability is lost, trees may take a long time to influence on vegetation dynamics, and invasive species may reduce regenerationThis study aimed to track initial successional trajectories, and identify functional groups of native species (fast growing and short-lived shrubs and grasses; perennial grasses; and native trees) relevant to regeneration, in restoration of savanna in Central Brazil on abandoned pasture. We aimed to answer the questions: is final relative proportion determined by initial relative proportion? Is successional trajectory dependent on the initial dominant functional group? Are there species turnover in the successional trajectories? We established 111 plots encompassing a range of different initial compositions of species and functional groups, and measured vegetation cover during two years. In the first year of monitoring, the short-lived and fast-growing shrubs Lepidaploa aurea, Stylosanthes spp. and the annual grass Andropogon fastigiatus were among the six species with higher vegetation cover, but decreased 69%, 78% and 100%, respectively, in the following two years. Plots dominated by these species were replaced mostly by perennial grasses (in 58% of the plots), but also by invasive grasses (in 22% of the plots). Plots dominated by native perennial grasses followed different trajectories: 28% remained stable; 28% were replaced by Tachigali vulgaris, a fast-growing tree; 36% were replaced by a composition of mixed functional groups. 74% of the plots dominated by invasive grasses (cover ≥ 80%) didn’t have significant variation on vegetation cover. Invasive grasses strongly increased cover in the restored area, reaching same cover of native species after two years. They also increased relative cover in more plots than the natives (72 x 38 plots), and were able to replace up to 91% of native cover, whereas native species were not able to replace more than 44% of exotic relative cover in any plot. Our study evidence successional trajectories in restoration of savanna in abandoned pasture, with fast species turnover from short-lived to perennial species. We also highlight the importance of pre-sowing control of invasive grasses, which can reinvade the restored area if seed bank is not adequately eliminated.

Abstract:
György Ligeti is nowadays perceived as one of the most important composer of the second half of the 20th century. However, most of his production remains unrecognized. Thanks to new elements, including among others the Hungarian period of his creation, the evolutioon of a style is given a new light. The adoption of a new point of view for this study allows us to reconsider the entire works. We shall focus on the concept of popular and its varied meanings, such as the influence of different forms of popular music, the aspects of the composer's popularity, or the existence of some populiste inclinations at a certain time. A first introductory part both includes a monograph of the Hungarian years and an inventory of fixtures of the corpus. The second part focuses on the prominence of Hungary and Central Europe in his production. This same part points the filiation with Béla Bartók and give a translation of the musical Hungarian poems. The third part first attempts to match Ligeti's work with some biographical elements. Then, the years preceeding his arrival in West Europe give us the opportunity to get back to a certain period when the research of a personnal style led the composer to balance Bartók's and Schœnberg's views. Eventually, the influence of folk music, jazz music and others popular music shall be discussed. A major work of collecting and translating is to be found in the annex ; an exhaustive catalogue of works or the translation of the composer's folk music based articles are a few examples

Abstract:
Known as the founder of the Musée de l'Homme, Paul Rivet is still an obscure figure in his disciplinary field, whereas he contributed powerfully to build the shapes of french ethnology in the 1920/1930's. This intellectual biography intends to rediscover him. Back from a five-year mission in Ecuador in 1906, which provoked his vocation, Paul Rivet turns away from anthropometry and revitalizes the anthropological project thanks to linguistics and diffusionism. He conquers institutional positions that ensure the definitive recognition of ethnology. Exemplary figure of the committed intellectual, he fights for his humanistic convictions against the fascist and racist threats in the 1930's. In 1941, he refuges in Colombia where he develops ethnological studies and helps to reassert the value of the Indian's place in the nation

Abstract:
Yellowstone National Park (YNP) contains the world's largest concentration of geothermal features, and is legally mandated to protect and monitor these natural features. Remote sensing is a component of the current geothermal monitoring plan. Landsat satellite data have a substantial historical archive and will be collected into the future, making it the only available thermal imagery for historical analysis and long-term monitoring of geothermal areas in the entirety of YNP. Landsat imagery from Thematic Mapper (TM) and Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) sensors was explored as a tool for mapping geothermal heat flux and geothermally active areas within YNP and to develop a change analysis technique for scientists to utilize with additional Landsat data available from 1978 through the foreseeable future. Terrestrial emittance and estimates of geothermal heat flux were calculated for the entirety of YNP with two Landsat images from 2007 (TM) and 2002 (ETM+). Terrestrial emittance for fourteen summer dates from 1986 to 2007 was calculated for defined geothermal areas and utilized in a change analysis. Spatial and temporal change trajectories of terrestrial emittance were examined. Trajectories of locations with known change events were also examined. Relationships between the temporal clusters and spatial groupings and several change vectors (distance to geologic faults, distance to large water bodies, and distance to earthquake swarms) were explored. Finally, TM data from 2007 were used to classify geothermally active areas inside the defined geothermal areas as well as throughout YNP and a 30-km buffer around YNP. Estimations of geothermal heat flux were inaccurate due to inherent limitations of Landsat data combined with complexities arising from the effects of solar radiation and spatial and temporal variation of vegetation, microbes, steam outflows, and other features at each geothermal area. Terrestrial emittance, however, was estimated with acceptable results. The change analysis showed a relationship between absolute difference in terrestrial emittance and earthquake swarms, with 34% of the variation explained. Accuracies for the classifications of geothermally active areas were poor, but the method used for classification, random forest, could be a suitable method given higher resolution thermal imagery and better reference data.

Abstract:
Advertising of products and services has become an accepted and integral part of everyday life, and advancements in mass media technology have made it easy to convey information to a large proportion of the population. However, when addressing health related services and products, the messages contained in today's advertisements have taken on a new purpose and tone. The healthcare industry in North America, especially pharmaceutical companies, and to a lesser extent the diagnostic imaging and the medical device industry, use direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising to convey a message to a target population. On its face, the promotion of health awareness is an acceptable and worthy practice, but ethical concerns are raised when the health industry plays an instrumental role in creating "illnesses" or "conditions" for which they are providing treatments.
At one time, to protect health consumers, legislation and regulations prohibited directly advertising of prescription healthcare products and services to consumers, since it was thought that physicians were the ones best equipped to deal with this information. However, times have changed, and DTC advertising now is openly allowed in some countries, and in others in some narrowly specific situations.
This thesis examines the ethical and practical issues raised by this development, arguing that the negative consequences of permitting Direct-to-Consumer advertising far exceeds any positive benefits. If governments do not take an active role in preventing the further commercialization of medicine, Canada (and other countries as well) may be destined to become a nation of worried well.
