The research analyses the behaviour of the flow in an open channel with self-formed banksides, with the purpose of exploring the ability of a numerical model to predict such geometries. The strategy consists in contrast a numerical model with physical model data. With respect to the numerical model, it is divided in two main parts, the first one describing the flow and the second one defining the cross sectional geometry. For the first part, a quasi 2D flow structure was selected to model the flow, i.e. the Shiono and Knight Model (SKM) (Shiono and Knight, 1991), due to its simplicity and flex

Abstract:
Modelling and forecasting the stock market remains a challenge because of the high volatilities in individual stock prices and the market itself. Hence, this topic has received much attention in the literature since forecast errors represent the systematic risk faced by investors. Therefore, the ability to reliably forecast the future values of the shares would provide essential help in reducing that risk to those investors. The main aim of this research is to develop and calibrate a framework that can be used to model the daily share prices of the companies from the banking sector and hence p

Abstract:
In active portfolio management, fund managers seek to follow an investment strategy with the objective of outperforming an investment benchmark index. Opportunities to outperform a benchmark in active fund management is made possible through crosssectional dispersion of returns in the market. It is cross-sectional volatility of returns that allows fund managers to identify changing trends in market relationships and to take advantage of market opportunities.Quarterly active share and active return data of Domestic General Equity funds was used to determine whether the level of active share and

Obesity and weight-management is primarily focused on improving diet, nutrition and activity levels. Some research suggests that psychological interventions may have a role in weight-management. This thesis sought to better understand whether there is a role for the use of psychological approaches in obesity. Literature Review: A review of literature examining the efficacy of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) as a treatment for weight management was conducted. Ten quantitative studies were included in the review. The evidence showed that CBT had a positive effect on weight-loss in both short

Abstract:
A number of papers have provided empirical evidence suggesting that analysts' earnings forecasts do not conform to Muthian rationality. Analysts' earnings forecasts have been found, in both early research and more recent studies, to be irrational, i.e., biased, inefficient or both (see for instance: Brown et al., 1985 and Easterwood and Nutt, 1999). De Bondt and Thaler (1990), in particular, documented generalised overreaction in the analysts' forecasts, showing that the forecasts, tracked by I/B/E/S, are too optimistic and too extreme to be considered rational. Conversely, a notable study dev

Studies examining bioevents (e.g., mass extinctions, faunal turnovers, diversification events) usually only scrutinize a short interval prior to such events, however, understanding their actual paleobiological implications requires a thorough understanding of the background conditions. The objective of this study is to document the background biodiversity dynamics in a single lithofacies of the Upper Cretaceous Pierre Shale that was deposited in an offshore setting of the Western Interior Seaway (WIS) and to place these changes into an environmental context. Abstract:
This research project aims to assess development projects in the energy sector with its focus on the shale gas exploration in the Karoo. The assessment is based on a critical analysis of the concepts and principles of sustainability, complexity and the National Environmental Management Act, using a critical hermeneutics methodology to develop an assessment criterion. Critical hermeneutics is the science and art of interpreting texts, challenging the status quo, its influences and assumptions. Hermeneutics is the reaction to enlightenment fundamentalism, which is an over-reliance on rationality
