Abstract:
This thesis is about the molecular structure of minerals, their surface modification and the dispersion of selected minerals of a ceramic nature as sols and gels. The theme that permeates through this work and connects the different elements of the work is the search for fundamental knowledge and understanding of mineral structure and mineral surface structure. The underlying principal is that of molecular structure of surfaces and the changes in that molecular structure through modification of the surfaces. There are seven research divisions of study reported in this thesis: (A) Molecu

Abstract:
Osteoporosis is a major health problem that can be mitigated by accurate prediction of future risk for bone fractures. Bone mineral density (BMD) testing can be conducted to assess people's risk of fracture, but its value rests on the ability to provide risk information effectively to those individuals who have low BMD; those individuals must then be willing to initiate and maintain recommended lifestyle behaviours and medications. This study assessed the influence of low BMD results and direct-to-participant feedback of results on awareness of diagnosis, information seeking about osteoporosis

Abstract:
Acid leaching of different natural chrysocolla samples under ambient conditions demonstrated that the chemical and chrystallographic inhomogenity significantly affects the rate and that it is virtually impossible to use the mineral as a model for the kinetics of hydrometallurgical processing of copper ores.Dissolution experiments, stability diagrams, and X-ray powder diffraction studies are undertaken and studied in this research and results are given. It is found that a complete solid solution series exists in Nature with most tungstenian wulfenites and molybdenum stolzites containing a range o

A study was conducted on three natural mineral materials referred to as basalt, scoria, and calcined shale. These materials were provided by an industrial mineral producer in British Columbia. The main objectives of this study are, to evaluate the selected materials for treatment of metal contaminated effluents by adsorption, and to assess the possibility of replacing cement with the materials and to evaluate the performance of the cement replaced mortars. In this research study, adsorption tests were conducted to asses the possibility of removing cationic and anionic metal ions from prepared

Humic substances, such as the closely related humic and fulvic acids are ubiquitous, naturally occurring organic macromolecules of complex but undefined structure. These compounds are known complexing agents due to their supramolecular like structures and are capable of binding a wide variety of compounds. Numerous studies have confirmed that humic and fulvic acids exhibit diverse medicinal and therapeutic properties. For this reason, alternative or “natural” medicinal preparations rich in these substances are being self-administered, often concomitantly with conventional drugs. The possibili

However, humin, is insoluble in aqueous base. Recently, a sequential exhaustive extraction (SEE) process has been shown to be capable of isolating and separating the major components of the classically defined HSs from soils of the temperate and tropical regions. The SEE system was used to isolate the HA/FA and humin fractions from a subtropical volcanic Taiwanese soil. Inc
