Lo, Elsa, and n/a. "Chinese architectonic code : a semiotic study of shop signs in Sydney's Chinatown." University of Canberra. Communication, 1994. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20060818.132847.

Abstract:
This study aims to furnish a semiotic reading of Sydney's Chinatown by analysing the environmental meanings codified in that particular context. The basic unit of analysis is the shop sign. Some features underlying sign formations in Sydney's Chinatown are identified and the communication process involved in its organisation of meanings and space is explored. The thesis is organised into three parts. The first part gives an introduction to the background of study and examines theories on architectural semiotics and its relation to visual communication. It consists of three chapters. Chapter 1 defines the scope of the study and outlines the objectives and goals of research. Chapter 2 focuses on two related fields of architectural semiotics, viz. semiotics of objects and semiotics of space. Evaluation of semiotic approaches and behavioural science approaches to the study of objects and space is made. Some of the theories discussed are applied to give a profile of shop signs from a visual semiotic perspective. In Chapter 3 a description of the methods of research and an outline of the analytical framework of this study are given. The two chapters of Part Two provide some background information on various conceptions of "Chinatown". Chapter 4 discusses the development features of Chinatowns in North America, which reveal that there are divergent perceptions of Chinatowns. Chapter 5 describes the development of Sydney's Chinatown and underlines some of its distinctive features. In Part Three the results of the study are presented. Chapter 6 focuses on the codification of meanings realised in Sydney's Chinatown. Chapter 7 is concerned with elements of sign formations and examines the communicative functions of shop signs in the Chinatown context. The analyses made in these chapters are intended to identify some features of sign formations in Sydney's Chinatown within an architectonic system. The thesis concludes with a summary of the study and a discussion of the applicability of architectural semiotic theories. It is suggested that further study can be pursued in the direction that contributes to an understanding of architectonic systems and social communication.

The present study aims at amplifying the debate upon the creativity in advertising, more specifically the kind of creativity recognized in advertisements (not the proposed methods or techniques in order for an ad to become creative, an ordinary issue in advertising manuals). The detection of creativity in advertisements is usually accompanied by words such as ‘original’, ‘astonishing’, ‘intelligent’, ‘outstanding’. The study investigates the phenomenon of creativity in advertising under empirical bases. That is, the aesthetic as proposed by the semiotics serves as the framework for analyzing the data. According to this viewpoint, every aesthetic message conveys mechanisms that transgress the code. The code can be read as imbrications of norms that enable communicative processes to take place. By the exam of this concept (code) will be unrolled elements that will go to hint and to describe some generating mechanisms of creativity in ads

Abstract:
This dissertation is comprised of three teacher-researcher studies carried out with the intention of showing teachers how to move beyond the monolingual paradigm to build upon linguistic and cultural diversity in their everyday practice. The monolingual paradigm is linked to ideologies regarding proficiency in English as the principle means of academic success and citizenship. These studies challenge this traditional way of viewing education by treating learning "as an emerging property of whole persons' legitimate peripheral participation in communities of practice" (Lave, 1991, p. 63), whether these are interest-based communities of practice beyond the classroom or bilingual communities of practice within the classroom. In order to recognize and explain this learning and inform teaching practices, I adopt a social semiotic approach in order to explore how meaning is constructed through language, and also through social interactions with all modern aspects of society, including gesture, image, performance, and music (Kress, 2012; van Leeuwen, 2005). I explore how these interactions allow youth to create diverse identities, beyond immigrant, refugee, limited English proficient, learner, and "other", in three educational arenas: 1) Outside of the classroom in interest-based communities of practice at school, 2) in a secondary dual-language content classroom, and 3) online in an educational transnational telecollaboration project. In all three studies I triangulate quantitative data of student participation and academic achievement with qualitative participant narratives and teacher-researcher observations. What results is insight into the impact of creating multimodal trajectories for youth to perform identities and knowledge as language users in schools, where historically messages of youth's social identities are ascribed in much more constricting ways (Harklau, 2003). Viewing these youth as language users, rather than learners, sends a message to both educators and youth that in education, identity formation trumps skills development, and this can lead to higher expectations, more engaging learning, and opportunities for youth to question race-language educational legacies (Malsbary, 2014; Wenger, 1998).

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis studies the free indirect style in Pasolini's works through a double path of research. On one hand it takes into account his literary and cinematic production; on the other it studies the linguistic and semiotic principles on which its free indirect style hinges. This double path has been crossed in the light of four notions that Pasolini developed in his theoretical essays along his artisticactivity. The first one is the “regression”, elaborated in the 40s in order to describe the usage of the Friulian dialect of his early poems. The second one is the “sentimental connection”, which Pasolini discovered in Gramsci's Prison Notebooks and he employed to analyse the relationship between intellectuals and subaltern classes. The third one concerns the free indirect discourse used in Pasolini's Roman novels of the 50s and studied from a linguistic and semiotic point of view in some essays. The last one is the free indirect subjective theorised in the 60s to describe the cinematic adaptation of the free indirect style.Regression, sentimental connection, free indirect discourse and free indirect subjective are the most important notions of Pasolini's free indirect style. They show how the author established itslinguistic, political and sentimental relationship with the subalterns that populates his literary works aswell as his movies

Abstract:

Johnson, Ian Lyndon. "Towards urban multilingualism: investigating the linguistic landscape of the public rail transport system in the Western Cape." Thesis, University of the Western Cape, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/4045.

Abstract:
Magister Artium - MA<br>This study explores the linguistic landscape of Metrorail in the Western Cape, South Africa. The Western Cape is a diverse, multicultural society with a history of colonialism and imperialism. For this reason, the language/s on signage was explored to reveal differences/similarities between the various groups and cultures within society. This kind of investigation entailed consideration of the signage displayed on trains, stations and other railway infrastructure. Thus, data was collected over a three-month period during 2010 which coincided with the FIFA Soccer World Cup, hosted by South Africa. A combined quantitative and qualitative approach for the analysis of data was supplemented with a multimodal, multi-semiotic approach. In addition, interviews were conducted of a cross-section of commuters as a way to give meaning to the analysis of the quantitative and qualitative data. The analysis explored the extent to which multilingualism and multiculturalism are reflected in the linguistic landscape of Metrorail. The focus of the study was on the degree of visibility of the official and non-official languages on signage, as faced by Metrorail commuters. The findings of the study reveal that the interplay between power relations, prestige, symbolic value, identity and vitality in the linguistic landscape of Metrorail results in a somewhat limited display of multilingualism. The findings also reflect the changed language attitudes and perceptions, the maintenance of power relations, the expression of identity, and the desire to be perceived in a certain way, in a broader South African context. Furthermore, the data reveals that the actual linguistic reality does not accurately reflect the aims of the Western Cape language policy in terms of promoting multilingualism. Moreover, it reveals that English is the preferred language of wider communication and it is also the dominant language on the official and non-official signage in the public space. Although the indigenous African languages, along with Afrikaans, are generally neglected in the public space, these languages are widely spoken by Metrorail commuters. The linguistic landscape of Metrorail therefore does not accurately reflect the linguistic reality of the various speech communities in the Western Cape. The linguistic landscape of Metrorail serves to index the broader social developments of the transformed sociolinguistic South African identity.

Abstract:
Modern lifestyles in the developed regions of the world operate beyond our planet's resource capacity. Over-consumption has not only proven detrimental for the environment, but has also undermined our capacity to achieve deep life satisfaction and societal well-being. Embracing more sustainable ways of consuming and producing is key in order to foster the conditions for humanity to flourish. Strategies for disrupting the dominant consumption patterns lie within the next challenges, as adoption of sustainable innovation is still disappointingly low and needs to be accelerated. Design for Sustainability has contributed important technological advances to improve production and life cycle efficiency (i.e. eco design, cradle to cradle). However, it is increasingly recognised that sustainability is not just a technical matter, but ultimately a cultural issue. One of the problems is that people perceive sustainability as a loss, rather than a gain. Therefore, to drive demand, there is urgency to better understand users aspirations and expectations, i.e. the cultural and socio-symbolic aspects of consumption that influence decision-making. This thesis argues that the perceived value of sustainable innovations can be enhanced by paying more attention to the elaboration of meanings or symbolic value they bring to bear for the user, which can be achieved by strategically framing innovations using high-value contextual signifiers (cultural codes). Drawing on cognitive science, cultural studies and applied semiotics, this research contributes a theoretical framework and case studies of how these theories can support the design process in mapping sociocultural contexts, in order to elaborate sustainable innovations that are perceived as aspirational and relevant. The theory is applied to the case of sustainable Product-Service Systems (PPS bottom-up social innovations) due to the opportunities these pose for systemic disruption, and the cultural barriers for adoption. Through a series of Participatory Action Research interventions, the investigation developed three case studies of how of the framework may benefit sustainable PSS value proposition framing and design, with one application in the context of design education to support the development of designers critical and sociocultural deconstruction capacity and skills. Finally, in exploring the potential that cultural codes offer to improve the design and value proposition of sustainable innovations, this thesis contributes and advances a new perspective for understanding symbolic aspects of consumption, and highlights opportunities for sustainable design to have greater influence in societal transformation.

Abstract:
With the unprecedented rise in the use of visuals, and its undeniable omnipresence in organizational contexts, as well as in the individual's everyday life, organization and management science has recently started to pay closer attention to the to date under-theorized "visual mode" of discourse and meaning construction. Building primarily on insights from the phenomenological tradition in organization theory and from social semiotics, this article sets out to consolidate previous scholarly efforts and to sketch a fertile future research agenda. After briefly exploring the workings of visuals, we introduce the methodological and theoretical "roots" of visual studies in a number of disciplines that have a long-standing tradition of incorporating the visual. We then continue by extensively reviewing work in the field of organization and management studies: More specifically, we present five distinct approaches to feature visuals in research designs and to include the visual dimension in scholarly inquiry. Subsequently, we outline, in some detail, promising avenues for future research, and close with a reflection on the impact of visualization on scientific practice itself. (authors' abstract)

Abstract:
Abstract:
In today’s digital age, this Ph.D. thesis focuses on books defined as a form of media. Reconsidering the western idea of the communication conveyed by this medium, it juxtaposes the physical form of books and their symbolic role. This thesis is built on a history of the forms a book can take to analyse the transformations related to the rise of the « e-book ». Books fulfil a role of mediation between the partners of an exchange, who are irreducibly absent from each other. This absence is envisioned as a driving force, shaping the communication process of books, which incarnation would constitute the presumption of an encounter. To what extent are the mediation function played by books and the foundation of their symbolic efficiency built on the very same bases as those of bodies? Although generally considered as being immovable objects, we revolutionize the way books are perceived, and we examine the dynamic process of their acceptance in social life. Accounting for their “composite” features, we attempt to fully apprehend the implications of the corporealities of books, including language, text and physical object. Our hypothesis is that a book may be viewed as a substitute of a body, nourished by the thought of the co-presence of its contributors, in that it constitutes a form in which they are alternatively present. It is therefore necessary to investigate the corporealities of the media and to analyse the role of books in the construction of the cultural and social concepts of the body. Reconsidering the implications of the mediation, this thesis raises the prospects of an anthropology of communication, inviting to re-evaluate the medias from the perspective of a restructuring of the relations between nature and culture

Abstract:
In this dissertation, we depart from the theoretical basis of French semiotics to treat the syncretism of cinematic language, semiotic system in which it is possible to obtain the homogeneous signification of the syncretic code form from the syncretization of concurrent languages. We aim at establishing the place of cinema in semiotic theory so that the analysis of syncretic objects can be broadly elaborated considering all languages involved in its manifestation. Thus, we assume the conceptualization of syncretism by Hjelmslev (1975), Greimas and Courtés (1979) and the theoretical advances proposed by Beividas (1983) to deepen the discussion about how the arrangement and the organization of languages that participate in the system of syncretization in the language of cinema may occur, assuming that they would act as functions of the syncretic system, and also as functives of new functions which would be created. We intend to demonstrate with a model of syncretization of the syncretic code form that a movie can be analyzed in a broad approach of syncretization so that the complexity of the language that constructs its signification is achieved through the organization of several code forms, the individual languages that participate in the syncretic system. Finally, we aim at covering the formal and material peculiarities of cinematic language through the semiotic analysis of its system of signification.

This particular section prevents a legislator from modifying the semantic aspect of legal concepts that shape the matrix-rule of tax incidence transmitted in constitutional competency rules, resulting, as immediate consequence, in the modification of the ranges of tax competency and in collection increase. In the light of the study of dynamics of cognitive openness and operational closeness of autopoietic social systems, limits of interference of communications of political and economic systems in the legal system and the form of appropriation of environmental issues without interfering in its autopoiese, which are reflected in the constitution of legal communication meanings, it is claimed that the section 110 of the National Internal Tax Code determines that external knowledge upon legal system will be only transformed in legal information, if properly selected and processed by their codes and programs, otherwise, they will generate communication based on extralegal criteria, spreading noise and systemic corruption, as well as leading to loss of differentiation with the environment and rupture while being an autopoietic system<br>A dissertação é referente à interpretação da norma jurídica, especialmente o art.110 do Código Tributário Nacional brasileiro, que estabelece que a lei tributária não poderá alterar a definição, o conteúdo e o alcance de institutos, conceitos e formas das normas que estabelecem as competências tributárias, através de instrumental guarnecido pela Teoria dos Sistemas Autopoiéticos e da Semiótica.

Abstract:
All of these visual forms are produced by Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). APIs are digital writing tools which have become part of the publishing process of contemporary web pages. This thesis aims at understanding the « publishing function » of APIs : their role in the production, standardization and circulation of the « little forms » of online texts. Focused on Facebook’s and Twitter’s APIs, our work is divided into five chapters. The first one is a genealogy of the APIs, starting from their combinatorial aspect, a conception of writing which trace back to early programming and the invention of computer science. The second chapter is an inquiry about the imaginaries of calculus as a kind of writing, torn between the imaginary of numbers, of combinatorics and the search for a universal scientific method. The third chapter is a study of the semiotic consequences of this combinatorial universalism. We show how APIs are based on an idea of text as an abstract, modular object. This abstraction of the text is beneficial to an « economy of passages ». In this economy where circulation produce value, APIs are a place of « literate practices » (chapter four). They establish visual standards for the readability, production and circulation of online texts. Among these standards, there’s a systematic invizibilisation of the action of machines, although calculus is a necessary part of the production of digital texts. Therefore, in the fifth chapter, we give some epistemological elements towards non-anthropocentric semiotics, meaning : semiotics which would take into account computational machines as a part of the utterance of digital texts

Abstract:
This study examines how websites can be used for corporate branding purposes of institutions in the cultural field. It is based on my analytical findings on the website of Fotografiska, a gallery for contemporary fine art photography in central Stockholm. The thesis is based on the claim that both the surrounding context and the content of the exhibition texts plays a crucial role in the creation of a corporate brand for art galleries. Therefore my intention here is to show how Fotografiska all together use semiotic and narrative resources on their website in order to brand themselves. Supported by the findings from my sociosemiotic discourse analysis I argue that the extensive portraying of fine art photography and its key figures, maintains a few artistic core values that are characteristic for the branding of Fotografiska. Those are minimalism, intellectuality, exclusiveness, tradition and expertise.

Abstract:
<p>I’ve chosen primary to analyze commercial form of advertising by world leading companies; <em>McDonald’s, Coca-Cola</em> and <em>HP</em> due to their implementation of global advertising. The fourth campaign that’s being analyzed is not of commercial type instead it’s characterized as an informative campaign that the ideal organization <em>Amnesty</em> is carring out.  The study has been successful in gathering data that could be presented in correlation with already established theories and then comparing the results. The goal of the research is to create an understanding regarding global advertising as well as the scientific debate that’s going on within the subject. The scientific research has been debated for a long time regarding advertising that’s positioned globally; whether it should be standardized or adapted. This means whether advertising should look the same in all countries or if it should be adapted to a nation’s specific culture. Scientists haven’t yet been successful in establishing what’s considered to be more prominent due to various diverse opinions.</p><p>By implementing content analysis together with semiotic analysis as a reinforcer, the study was able to examine the global advertising’s design and their common characteristics. Within this study the campaigns have been studied both visually and verbally in addition to their messages and values. The McDonald’s and Coke campaign has been categorized as advertising that reflect specific kinds of lifestyles and therefore characterized as “lifestyle format”. HP campaign on the other hand was using celebrities. This contributed that their global campaign became very personal because the celebrities were reflecting their own personality in the commercials. That’s why HP was categorized as the “personalized format” while Amnesty remained characterized as an informative campaign. Results show that these campaigns’ global form of advertising weren’t only implementing standardized form but also incorporated adapted commercial characteristics as well. This is what the theorizers Hassan, Craft and Kortam call a”hybrid strategy” that’s by their opinion most effective form of global advertising. Another important result was that the “creative strategy” (its promise/statement) is what makes the campaign cohesive. While the “creative tactic” (the visual elements) differs more or less within an advertising campaign.</p><br><p>Jag har valt att främst analysera kommersiella kampanjer från de världsledande företagen<em> McDonald’s, Coca-Cola</em> och <em>HP</em> eftersom de tillämpar global form av reklam.

Abstract:
Today, the need to protect and to know how to read such identities becomes a way to ensure the survival of an important wealth, made of material and immaterial inheritance. Therefore, in this research the landscapes are not only considered as a group points, lines, areas, but also as a system of relationships that ties together the elements. This system of relationships makes the landscape a carrier of meanings that should be decoded. Then, the purpose is to read, translate and represent a text that describes the relations between things, and the field of work is the perception. For this purpose I used the semiotic reading. For the interpretation of the landscape we have to recognize the signs that become meaningful. In this case study (the Park of the Aniene in Rome) I faced a semiotic reading divided into four steps. In the first phase, considering the visual perception, I identified some signs (significant in the semiotic meaning). In the second phase I identified signs expressions related to their morphology but observing them far away from the topic content In the third phase the topic content comes up again as the core of the relationships among the signs and as the center of the attribution of the meanings (semantic features). In the fourth phase I investigated the relations between meanings and the way they help to create an image of the landscape. This can be done through an identification and a representation of the perceptual identity of places. The representation corresponds to the process of perceptual semiosis. In facts, the representation depends on the perception of the senses but it’s also deeply tied to the meaning.

Abstract:
The idea that dance can be understood as an act of communication and a form of language has been already taken into account by scholars. The hypothesis that will be discussed in this MA dissertation concerns a more specific matter: a semiotic approach to different forms of dance improvisation, and notably the method traditionally labeled "intuitive dance". To understand this phenomena two main concepts will be conveyed: that of "quotation" understood via W. Benjamin's essays on Brecht, and that of "notation", as defined by N. Goodman in his Languages of art. Can we understand dance as a language - id est a quotable and notable code - even in its more intuitive forms? How is it possible to "understand", "quote" and "address" gestures, even in front of a wide heterogeneous audience and without any prefixed choreography but only on the base of a free and in-time creating process? Can we understand improvisation as a complex code? what and how does this code mean? Abstract:
碩士<br>樹德科技大學<br>應用設計研究所<br>107<br>In the conceptualization up to the production and distribution of products, may it be in fashion, world of information technology, media and especially in product design, semiotic hegemony or power play on ‘meaning potential’ of a semiotic mode from a semiotic medium posits an argument on the universal acceptability and awareness of design from local and global consumers. These experiential expressions across culture lacks universal lexical inventory to visual and/or verbal texts. This has been a problem of local designers in showcasing and incorporating cultural design’s experiential expression to a certain product. The conceptualization of meaning-making in design using cultural signifiers in the modern world, tend to be more varied albeit being blackballed. In product design, cultural elements utilized for commercialization, production and consumption is no longer just an economic behavior but a deconstructed form of code consumption. Thus, there should be a conscious consideration of culture in global market, because culture and consumption have an unprecedented relationship with each other. The study intended to investigate, analyze and integrate the cultural codes of Pintados tattoo design in furniture product, as a viable medium for the promotion of its culture and heritage, and at the same time analyzed the cultural codes and cultural appropriation of present industries towards the design in study. A market survey using search engine with a product analysis pointed out the potential product created and innovated based on hypothesis that cultural codes generated from semiotics theory, and examined consumer culture using analysis generated from Quality Function Deployment (QFD). This research presented a 2D/3D digital sketch of the product concept based on the design rationale with the help of professional local designers. Specifically, the study aimed to answer research questions on the assessment and analysis of Pintados tattoo design’s cultural codes from interrelationship and intra-relationship of users (product consumers) to cultural symbols of Pintados design for the promotion and preservation of the design in study using Semiotics theory and Quality Function Deployment. A total of 109 respondents were identified, 102 culturally literate market from Samar, Leyte and Cebu comprised the sample of the study and seven (7) decision makers composed of a multi-disciplinary team of designers. The technique and tools for data collection were online survey questionnaires and QFD/House of Quality (HoQ) template. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected and analyzed to answer the problem covered in the research. The result showed that human relationship (inter and intra) are attached to symbolical perceptions and to understand these perceptions is through design by a matter of communicating with culture. These relationships predict human behavior—their needs and belief systems. The analysis of sign-systems (cultural codes) became an interdisciplinary attributes, from physical context (intrarelationship) to a more social interpretation (interrelationship). Studying culture as an important aspect in the design process, is a strategy of understanding the users (past and current) opinions, cultural trends if acceptable by the public and others. The medium (coffee table) does not affect much on the preservation of Pintados tattoo design because the preservation of the design relies on the ‘culturally-literate markets’’ perception and acceptance to the design regardless of the medium. But, the Pintados tattoo design helped in creating/designing a commercially viable product that is identifiable as a Filipino Visayan culture. This is very important as a study, due to the fact that modern and contemporary designs must have an integration of art, culture and science to form a cultural creativity design. In addition the modern needs of human beings need to be addressed in a humanistic, aesthetic and cultural aspects and should not be eclipsed by the influence of technology alone. Design as a human experience is much connected to our idea of ‘humanity,’ which is deeply rooted on the broader sense of culture, and as such to lead a more advanced design creation, technology should not be the leading aspect, thus merely supplements the modern problems and contemporary needs of the current society. This in turn can help in the promotion and preservation of the Pintados tattoo design.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:

This theses deals with methods of making meaning of visual signs that appears most often in fragrance advertisement. This will be worked out through analysis of these visual signs. The aim of my theses is to find the most common and most frequent semiotic visual signs and stereotypes and to find out how these signs are trying to show us imagination of the smell of fragrance and also what they express. The hypothesis is a thought that contrasting of visual signs in a fragrance advertisement for women and in a fragrance advertisement for men contains different sign stereotypes and emphasizes different elements. In the theoretical part, which is, however, supported by concrete examples from practice, I describe semiotics in advertisement, advertisement in general, differences between promotional strategies of products for women and men. In the practical part the main subjects are examples of specific fragrance advertisement. I will show both denotative and connotative meanings of signs, their disposition in the room of an advertisement, the most common elements and I will also focus on differences between the advertising for both women and men. Key words: semiotic analysis, semiotics in advertisement, advertising, stereotypes, visual signs, gender difference, denotation, connotation, codes, fragrance.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes news photographs related to the Old Town Square and its task is to explore the role of a place in a city and how it determines the myths in visual messages. The theoretical part focuses on the context of semiotics and news photographs and describes the possibilities in interpreting meanings of visual communication. In relation to photographic messages, it also reflects the analytical background at the level of myth, based on the work of Roland Barthes. Theoretical part also takes in account the symbolic and historical values of the Old Town Square. The analysis itself is based on a sample of 20 randomly selected photographs present in MF Dnes and Blesk, which cover events taking place in the Old Town Square between 1993 and 2013. Using comparative semiotic analysis it focuses on the visual content of news photographs in these journals, while observing how the Old Town Square takes part in the connotative chains and resulting myths.

Abstract:
<div> <p>The idea of “the book” overflows with extraneous significance: books are presented as windows, gateways, vessels, lighthouses, and gardens. Books speak to us and feed us, and they are a method of escape. The book has long represented much more than a static, hinged, bound, covered object inscribed with words. Even when a book is not performing an elaborate, imaginative function, the word “book” very often signifies the text it holds or even the text’s author: You can open <i>The Bluest Eye</i> or carry Toni Morrison in your bag. Fourteenth-century author Geoffrey Chaucer invokes a “book” by “Lollius” as authoritative source of his<i> Troilus and Criseyde</i>, though no person exists; likewise, to conclude the same text, Chaucer asks directs his project to “go, litel bok, go.” When a book makes an appearance in narrative, it is rarely j<i>ust a book</i>—without legs, the book moves, and without breath, it lives. This dissertation asks what about the shape of the codex has helped the book become such a metaphorically rich signifier.<br></p> <p>This dissertation attempts to unravel the various threads of meaning that make up the complex “idea of the book.” I focus on one of these threads: the book as a material object. By focusing on how the book as object—not the book as idea—functions within narrative, I argue that we can identify what about the book object enables its metaphorical range. I analyze moments in literature, television, and film when metaphorical functions are assigned, not to an ephemeral, complex idea of the book, but rather to the material realities of the book as an object. In these moments, the codex’s essential, material shape (what I am calling its bookishness) enables metaphorical functioning; I show that, by examining when mundanely physical bindings, pages, covers, and spines initiate metaphorical action, we can identify how the material book has come to mean so much more than itself.</p> <p><a></a>Indeed, despite a renewed appreciation for the book as both material and cultural object, books have become so significantly meaningful that attempts to define “the book” evade simplicity, rendering books as everything and nothing at the same time. My inquire explores this complexity by starting with a simple premise: Metaphors are based on some element of physical truth. Though the book has sprouted in a variety of metaphorical directions, many of those metaphors are grounded in the book’s material realities. Acknowledging this, especially in an age of fast-evolving media and bookish fetishism, offers a valuable and novel perspective on how and why books are both semantically rich and culturally valued objects.</p> </div> <br>

Abstract:
7. SUMMARY This diploma thesis The information value and acceptability of forecasting is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. In the theoretical part the forecasting is described as a product of television newscast. I deal with the fact of forecasting entering the media communication. I deal with the information value that forecasts bring and show the way a piece of information is transferred from a producer to an addressee relating to the process of coding and decoding. I describe the acceptability of forecasts and its elements influencing comprehension. In relation to acceptability, textual linguistics is discussed in a separated subchapter. The last theoretical part deals with semiotics and semantics. These disciplines deal mainly with meaning and sings and that is the reason why they are not important only in the theoretical part but also in an analyzing part of this thesis. The analyzing part is based on semiotic survey analysis dealing with individual components of forecasts (visual, audio and audio-visual). The aim of this thesis is to find out which of components of forecasting brings the highest information value to respondents and which is best comprehensible for addressees. The survey results demonstrate that it is the audio forecasting that has a high information value and brings...

Abstract:
My diploma thesis deals with respecting the journalism ethics by two most read general- interest newspapers in the Czech Republic - Mlada fronta DNES and Hospodarske noviny, when using complex communicate including a news photo. My research sample contained just breaking news (home and world) published nationwide in March, 2014. A relationship between meanings of particular parts in complex communicates (the headline, the caption, the photo and the article) and has been my variable that I was searching for within the sample. As all the parts work together in building one sense, which should represent a reality, I suppose, that meanings of these parts should show a relationship of harmony and substitution within one complex communicate. I used semiotic analysis to analyse meanings within a communicate, both denotation and connotation level. I applied my knowledge of social and visual semiotics, semantics and pragmatics to explain the meanings of individual signs. At the end of my research I compared results of my analysis to outcomes of Magda Polmanova's research - a former Charles University student that dealt with almost the same topic as me in her bachelor thesis, analysing the same dailies however from 2011. The findings of: How many times have these dailies published complex communicates that...

Mushore, Washington. "Corporate communications : a critical comparative study of the language of communication in the Zimbabwean banking sector." Diss., 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/3549.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to critically analyse the visual and verbal language used on printed adverts by some selected banks in Zimbabwe. A semiotic theory was used to analyse the printed adverts. The study revealed that all the banks use stereotyped language in communicating their messages to potential customers. Some audiences identified with this stereotyped languages, though others were also critical of stereotyped adverts. This paradox is dependent on the uneven levels of social consciousness of the audiences. The study argues that communication between banks and the potential customers is a product of negotiation of meaning at the point of reception of the printed adverts. The study then recommended the use of gender, race and class neutral language in order to enhance the effectiveness of advertisements. Future research into the study of the language of advertisement should focus on the problem of copyright infringement in advertising.<br>African Languages<br>M.A. (African languages)

Jankowitz, Christo. "Saying it with music: a theoretical exploration of musical encoding with reference to Western art music and the songs of the Ngqoko women." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/12219.

Full text
Abstract:
MA, Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, 2012<br>This research-report presents a theoretical exploration of musical encoding which has its basis in general semiotic theory. By examining what this reveals about the problematic and mysterious issue of music’s meaning, I argue that the most visceral and direct form of it is found in the manner in which the composer shapes a certain kind of temporal experience (erlebnis) which is engendered by the music itself. This reveals that sensations of goal-directed movement, closure, tension and release are shaped in a phenomenological way against a background of continuity that is established by metrical cyclicity and phrasal periodisation. As a result, the interpretation of certain kinds of accumulative structural effects generated by the gestural (rhythmic and melodic/harmonic) inflections of the temporal and intonational planes become meaningful in a rhetorical, affective (affekten) and topical sense. A study of Ngqoko (Xhosa) overtone-music, as a case study into African indigenous music (as opposed to the examples cited of Western art music), shows that an intensification of the relationships between pitch and rhythm that exist in speech-tone results in the formation of melody and a culturally embedded vocabulary of intonations. I argue that this resultant edifice exists in the music of most cultures and that this ultimately serves as the basis of musical encoding. Therefore musical meaning develops in ways that are completely intrinsic to music.

McDougall, Pascal. "Human Rights and Contracts as Labour Governance: A (Post-)legal Realist Inquiry." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/43220.

Full text
Abstract:
Law and development mainstream conceptions of labour market policies, while still marked by long-dominant views of contract law as economically superior to any labour regulation, have recently incorporated certain specific labour (human) rights. Core labour rights are thus accepted by global policy-makers, on the basis of their radical distinction from non-core labour standards and their rationalization according to certain foundational principles. This thesis criticizes the prevailing dichotomies between core labour rights and non-core standards, on the one hand, and contract law and regulation, on the other, bringing to bear the post-legal realist idea of legal indeterminacy. It argues that the organizing legal concepts that justify these dichotomies contain gaps and ambiguities that often lead to contradictory and indeterminate outcomes. It thus suggests that the core/non-core labour standards and contract/regulation distinctions are unproductive and should be rejected if a better conception of labour governance is to come to fruition.
