Abstract:
What is missing from academia and society at large is a more holistic picture of youth sexting. Not adequately understanding youth sexting has stunted previous attempts to effectively educate young people on its potential consequences. As such, the social and legal consequences of sexting gone viral have negatively impacted countless individuals. This study offers a preliminary glimpse of the sexting phenomenon by highlighting the experiences of 20 young people. I explore emergent themes regarding the nature of youth sexting as well as the interrelations amongst privacy, relationships, and sexting. Two distinct forms of sexting emerged from participant narratives, opening the door for more open-minded discussions and social policies cognizant of both the positive and negative outcomes of electronic forms of sexual communication. In general, participant discourse on youth sexting demonstrates a need for more research on the topic as well as updated forms of sexting education in schools and amongst families.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to offer a reflection on the theory of knowledge ofFrancisco Suárez and his nominalism in the light of Sextus Empiricus’ sceptical thought in his Outlines of Pyrrhonism. It is Sextus who allows us to compare the epistemology of Suárez with a dynamic system of knowledge. With this in view, in the first place, I examine Sextus’s scepticism and Suárez’s nominalist ontology. In the second place, I analyse the mental representation as conceived by Sextus in analogy with the formal and objective concepts of Suárez, and I also discuss the concept of relation in both authors.

Abstract:
By using rigorous conventional structure in her early work Anne Sexton was able to successfully contain some of her severe psychological instabilities stemming from childhood in poetic form. Sexton's artistic direction underwent a sharp change midway into her poetic career after she wrote the volume Transformations, a collection of story-poems based on narratives from the Grimm fairy tales. In this collection, Sexton took on the external persona of a witch, and with her new voice, she was boldly able to re-tell her version of the Grimm tales. The new persona enabled Sexton to shed her previous voice of passivity, and instead criticize humanity by using satire and humor. Unfortunately, this movement in her work was an exercise in self-exploitation as the larger, cultural arena of Grimm put off any chance of working out her private problems. After Transformations Sexton had come to the realization of her self-exploitation and decided to even further separate herself from humanity by continuing to work with even more generalized, cultural forms--a movement that ultimately led her to mythologize her own death.

The dissertation defends the idea that an adequate understanding of the sceptical suspension of judgement (epoché) presupposes the study of the Sextus Empiricus texts which, either directly or indirectly, address the problem of the pyrrhonian conception of language or discourse (lógos), and also the study of those texts that provide elements for the understanding of the Sextian position about the everyday language of common people. The first chapters deal with the well-known distinction between the so-called rustic and urbane interpretations of the pyrrhonian philosophy. In the sequence, the dissertation discusses the problem of the lógos, as viewed from a pyrrhonian perspective, also by developing a new argument in favor of the rustic interpretation, based upon the idea of a sceptic path. Subsequently, the notion of phainómenon and its relation to the sceptic lógos are analyzed through a general approach to ancient scepticism. The fith and last chapter proceeds to an avaluation of the philosophical strength of both the pyrrhonian and neopyrrhonian philosophies

Gill, Joanna Ruth. "'The cracked mirror' : Anne Sexton's poetics of self representation." Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2001. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/3019/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis re-evaluates the work of the poet Anne Sexton (1928-1974), concentrating, in particular, on the indeterminacies, contradictions and aporia which it finds to be characteristic of her ostensibly frank and self-revelatory writing. The study is based on a close textual analysis of Sexton's writing, is informed by oststructuralist theories, and is sustained by an examination and discussion of archive collections of her previously unpublished papers. In seeking an understanding of Sexton's poetics, the thesis identifies and interrogates the strategies of denial and obfuscation apparent in her own explication of her work - principally, by scrutiny of the unpublished, and previously unresearched, drafts of a series of lectures which she delivered in 1972. Chapters One and Two consider the origins of 'confessional' or - Sexton's preferred term - 'personal' poetry and reassess her place within contemporary poetry. They suggest that Sexton's writing is engaged in a process of negotiation and contestation, both with the boundaries and expectations of confessionalism, and with the strictures of T. S. Eliot's theory of 'impersonality'. In support of these arguments, Chapter Two offer a reading of Sexton's little-known poem, 'Hurry Up Please It's Time', alongside its intertext, Eliot's The Waste Land. Chapter Three reassesses received views of the supposedly beneficial interrelationship between confessional speaker and reader. It examines Sexton's appropriation of dramatic masks and personae and her use of metaphors of striptease and prostitution, and suggests that these are employed simultaneously to appease and to repel an intrusive audience. Similarly, Chapters Four and Five trace Sexton's problematisation of two previously-accepted tenets of confessional poetry: its status as autobiography and its truthfulness, drawing attention to the techniques employed in order to give the impression of both. Chapter Six considers Sexton's problematic engagement with a language which is not malleable, transparent, and referential but, rather, is experienced as uncooperative and occlusive. Finally, the thesis recuperates Sexton from the common charge of narcissism, arguing that it is the writing, rather than the poet, which is self-reflexive and self-conscious. In this respect, it concludes that her work - perhaps unexpectedly - anticipates many of the tendencies of postmodernist writing.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the ways in which Swedish library policies embed the requirements regarding people with a mother tongue other than Swedish and the Swedish minority languages, specified in the Swedish library law. The research questions were: What services do public libraries offer people with a mother tongue other than Swedish? What conceptions of the library’s possibilities to work with integration do the library policies mediate? Are there any differences regarding how integration is worked with in municipalities that are high in numbers of foreign born inhabitants, compared to those municipalities that are low in numbers of foreign born inhabitants? In order to answer these queries a sample of library policies from 16 municipalities were chosen by amount of foreign born inhabitants. Eight were chosen with high numbers, and eight with low numbers. These policies were analysed using discourse analysis and two theories: Ragnar Audunson’s theory regarding high- and lowintensive meetingplaces, and Robert D. Putnam’s theory regarding bonding and bridging as two ways to build social capital. The study showed that the services offered to people with a mother tongue other than Swedish and the Swedish minority languages, were mainly centered around an expanded collection of media in foreign languages, language cafés, library viewings, and providing an open meeting place. The most common conceptions of the library’s role in integration were the conception of the library as a meeting place, and the conception of increasing multi language in the collection and in the cooperation with other actors and organisations. The differences found between municipalities with a high number of foreign born inhabitants, in comparison to those with low numbers, were marginal, and possibly caused by other factors than those mentioned above. It was clear that next to all library policies expressed a view of the library as a lowintensive meeting place in accordance with Audunson’s theory. It was also found that both concepts of Putnams’ bonding and bridging, were applicable to the activities that suppousedly are to take place in these libraries. Hence, the library ought to be an excellent place for people to build social capital.

Gargett, Adrian. "Sextant in dogtown : a project." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1997. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/106918/.

Full text
Abstract:
The fundamental basis of the project concentrates upon an interactive manoeuvre involving Modern Continental Philosophy and the Postmodern Visual Arts. The primary components that structure the thesis conduct a Deleuzoguattarian "process” of action to produce a series of mechanisms designed to “open-up" a space in which to manifest a range of interpretations/translations that follow the developmentary trajectory of designated specific areas of art production. The primary aims concern the advance of the action to communicate an innovative/original set of expositions with a view to both “animate" and enhance these designated perspectives. The structural framework of the project tracks through “passages'/lines of flight” that occur/result from the impact of the Deleuzoguattarian mechanisms upon chosen material - "Introduction" (Primary) sets forth some guiding themes (how to think knowledge without the presumption of the neutral interchangeability of the subject?). “Tours of the Black Clock" (Dark) elaborates the Nietzschean background that informs the philosophical basis of the complete project. “Electrolite” (Spin the Black Circle), “Where Angels Play" (In a Network of Lines that Intersect), “Not to Touch the Earth” (Elephant Stone) “Across” (Out of Time) are sections designed to trace a number of alternative pathways through the major texts of the Deleuzoguattarian enterprise. “Becoming X" (Impact) initiates a secondary movement of experimentation. “Animal Nitrate" (The Image of Chance) effects “an encounter" with the work of painter Francis Bacon via the Deleuze text(s) “Logique de la Sensation" (1981), “Time and Again" (New Damage) introduces and articulates a number of instances from Deleuzian film-theory “The Fountainhead” (Vision Machines) is the main section of the project which evolves a detailed process analysing the paintings of American painter David Salle “The Mirror of Enigmas" (Numbers in the Dark) traces related Deleuzeoguattarian themes through the films of David Lynch, maintaining as a background an examination of Postmodern American culture/society. “Breaking into Heaven" (Elegia) returns to the more specific analysis of the late paintings of David Salle and uses the mechanics elaborated in Deleuze's book “Le Pli”. “Final Cut”/”Last Exit”/”Memorial Beach" is an attempt at a series of concluding remarks within the project divisions are resolved within a comprehensive Deleuzoguattarian structural system - evolving to be primarily defined in terms of two “active" processes/movements which engage theory and explanation, practice and application respectively, being therefore both a philosophical /academic debate while incorporating a high-level of “creative" experimentation. The first sections of the project detail an extensive series of explanatory “pathways/journeys” through the texts of Deleuze and Guattari with a view to indicating measures that can be deployed/utilized in a Deleuzoguattarian process of art/cultural analysis. Constructing the architectural pattern/”anatomy” of a series of interpretative surfaces to reflect the dimensions of the cultural material approached. The sections in the second part of the project enact a number of experimental designs, dispatching Deleuzoguattarian mechanisms in the body of the chosen cultural material. An interpretative surface is never under the influence of a single differentiated flow it constitutes the mutual boundary of numerous adjacent flows. The same interpretative surface is therefore available to be understood in as many different ways as there are adjacent flows along its fractural surface. This project is essentially a speculative enterprise, a philosophical experiment whose aim is to enhance, enlarge and intensify our “knowledge" of the area defined, through a synthesis, here labelled as a “Deleuzoguattarian process of Art analysis”. For Deleuze, thought creates what it thinks, as perception creates what it perceives (and therefore does not relate to it). The philosophical concept does not refer to the lived, but consists through its own creation, in setting up an event that surveys ("survole“) the whole of the lived no less than every state of affairs Deleuzoguattarian philosophy does not establish a relationship “between” philosophy and other disciplines, other ways of making sure, but eliminates this relationship to the advantage of a type of “greater philosophy” Thought/Philosophy thinks the sufficient reason of the actual in this manner. For Nietzsche, whose enterprise constitutes (I have suggested) the base/departure for the Deleuzoguattarian program, “the world" we know lies in our interpretation of it. However, the task of interpretation is not to discover “truth" but to “create" it. According to Nietzsche, there is no “world-in-itself, no unconditioned and stable entities that await our discovery, but a dynamic and turbulent “becoming" in which the forms we perceive are not separate from our interpretations of them Because we are ourselves part of this becoming, there is no vantage point from which it is possible to gain the absolute/unconditioned knowledge that we have imbued with the idea of “truth”. The exercise merely becomes self-reflective. However, despite this skepticism, Nietzsche realizes that the game of truth is unavoidable, so therefore he, and In consequence we, departing/initiating the pathways through this project, have to cast in the role of the philosopher who knows what he invents and invents while he knows. In Postmodern Art no style dominates. Alternatively we experience endless improvisations and variations on themes, parody/playfulness. Postmodern artists are unabashedly eclectic and call attention to it, combining traditions borrowing from rituals and myths. All the world's cultural symbols are now available in the public domain - “SANTA CLAUS IS ON THE CROSS". The Deleuzoguattarian process of art delineated is a play with the game of “truth” and not an explanation of a “whole" a description of the network of the "dynamic”/fluid nature of our transitional relationship to it. It is the flow of energy that encompasses what Deleuze/Nietzsche refer to as “the whole" A flow invokes the dynamic/fluid nature of becoming, while energy/activity implies a potentiality - the inherent capacity and growth actuated by the will to power. The flows of energy are manifested into differentiated flows within flows, “Ad infinitum” and powered by the parameters of state space - a potential i.e field defined by the characteristics of the subject flows associated Nothing exists in isolation Differentiation exists only via relations to other flows in a dynamic/non linear network of resistances.

Abstract:
Ancient Greek philosophical schools are said to share a common structure in their ethical theories which is characterized by a eudaimonistic teleology based in an understanding of human nature. At first glance, the skepticism of Sextus Empiricus as described in the Outlines of Pyrrhonism seems to fit into this model insofar as he describes the end of the skeptic as ataraxia, a common account of the expression of human happiness. I argue that this is a misunderstanding of Sextus’s philosophy for several reasons. “The end of skepticism” cannot be eudaimonistic or teleological in the way that other ancient ethical theories are typically understood; moreover, ataraxia is not an end derived from a theory about human nature. For these reasons, the skeptical way of life is radically different than the ethical theories proposed by other schools. I argue that this difference is a result of the character of the skeptical enterprise which involves the implicit rejection of norms in both the epistemological and the ethical spheres.

Abstract:
<p>This study examined the practice of sexting (the exchange of nude or semi-nude photos through text messaging) among 401 undergraduate students ages 18 to 25 at California State University, Fresno. A computer survey with separate tracks for sexters and non-sexters differentiated data between the two groups. The researcher found that one in three students sexted. Pearson&rsquo;s &chi; 2 test indicated a statistical significance between female non-Hispanic White casual daters and sexting. Among key findings, a majority of sexters infrequently exchanged a small number of photos with their boyfriends or girlfriends. Face cropping and smartphone applications were used most often for protection against harmful effects. Less than a fifth of respondents had their sext forwarded without their consent or were bullied with the photo. Over half of the students that sexted perceived their sexting activity led to having sex with that person. Those who did not engage in sexting perceived sexters to be unaware of the risks attached to the practice and perceived sexting as inappropriate. The findings demonstrated a range of risky and protective behaviors, experiences, and perceptions exist among Fresno State students that have adopted or rejected the practice of sexting. Recommendations for future studies include further exploration on the sexting behaviors between relationship partners as well as the types of applications used to sext. </p>

Ireland, Michelle. "The sexting experiences of a female adolescent." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/61267.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explored the sexting behaviour of a female adolescent in Cape Town, South Africa. Sexting has rapidly increased in recent years and concerns regarding the risks associated with the behaviour have prompted an increase in research on the topic. The rationale for the study included an acknowledgement of risks and the prevalence of the behaviour, and thus a need to fully understand sexting to prevent negative outcomes for adolescents. Few qualitative studies exist, meaning that the depth of an individual’s experiences has not been fully explored and nuances of the behaviour may have been missed. Furthermore, few studies have been grounded in specific theories. The purpose of the study was thus to explore a female adolescent’s subjective sexting experiences and perspectives through qualitative means grounded in the Theory of Planned Behaviour. Research questions aimed to explore the existing empirical and theoretical perspectives of sexting, motivations for sexting and consequences of sexting.   An interpretivist research paradigm was employed with a qualitative approach. The research design was a single, descriptive case study and data was gathered through a semi-structured interview, observations and a reflective researcher journal. Selection criteria for sampling the participant included being between the ages of 18 and 19, female and having exposure to the topic. Inductive thematic analysis was conducted on the transcribed interview data to establish themes and subthemes.  The resulting four themes are, firstly, the participant’s definition, conceptualisation and categorisation of sexting; secondly, the participant’s perceptions of motivations for engaging in sexting; thirdly, the participant’s beliefs concerning the consequences of sexting; and lastly, the participant’s ideas on the protection of adolescents from negative consequences of sexting. To summarise each theme: theme 1 established that the participant defined sexting as being both text-based and image-based and that each has differing purposes with a variety of technological influences. Theme 2 showed that the participant perceived the motivations for sexting to be associated with physical pleasure, emotional pleasure, intimacy, getting attention, seeking a relationship, coercion, a long-distance relationship, and for sexual communication. In theme 3 the participant described the consequences of sexting as being emotional and social and as punishment from adults. Theme 4 presented the participant’s ideas on how adolescents might be protected from the consequences of sexting on an individual level and through interventions by adults. When compared to the literature, the study confirmed many existing themes, while new data was identified along with gaps in the literature. This prompted recommendations for further research and assisted in informing recommendations for future intervention. The study’s findings added to the qualitative literature on the sexting experiences of a female adolescent. Using the Theory of Planned Behaviour means that the study added to understanding of how the theory may be utilised when qualitatively exploring sexting. Further, a South African case study was added to the body of knowledge on sexting.   Keywords: sexting behaviour, sexuality, adolescents, theory of planned behaviour, qualitative research, educational psychology<br>Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2017.<br>Educational Psychology<br>MEd<br>Unrestricted

Deflesta lärare som avböjde medverkan i studien gjorde detta på grund av överbelastningi arbetssituationen.<br>Negative spillover from work to family and vice versa often occurs when forinstance behaviour, mood, stress and feelings from one domain negatively affectthe other domain. This qualitative thesis investigated teachers perceptions ofnegative spillover from work to family and vice versa. The respondents were 16teachers in primary and secondary school which wrote a diary about negativespillover. The types of negative spillover that occured most frequently were 1)high workload, 2) disturbing thoughts or feelings, 3) fatigue, 4) problems withother human beings and 5) problems with machines. The results showed that therespondents reported more negative spillover from work to family, than fromfamily to work. Most of the respondents worked a lot and the time of trust werenot enough. The respondents who declined participation in the study did thisbecause of an overload in their work situation.

This thesis constitutes the first sustained attempt to situate the poetry of Anne Sexton in relation to postwar. American' politics. While there has been a recent resurgence of academic interest in the politics of mid-century confessional literature, the current crop of poetry scholarship throws focus on the work of Robert Lowell, John Berryman, and Sylvia Plath, and has hitherto neglected to examine the ways in which Sexton's creative praxis might be productively re-examined alongside contemporary critical theory and postwar political history. In the following chapters, I interrogate the received status of Sexton's poetry as psychic theatre and, demonstrate the terms-of its political engagement through a detailed analysis of its referential framework, which is, I argue, structured around key crises in postwar American history: the legacy of the Holocaust; the Cold War; the Vietnam conflict, and the rise of feminism. More explicitly, I explain how these historical paroxysms are registered in the metrical arrangements of Sexton's poems. Through reference to the work of Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, and Cathy Caruth, I locate her writing within the psychoanalytic discourse of trauma, in which the traumatic event - though not perceived fully at the time of its occurrence - is unconsciously re-experienced, or `acted-out', through the repetitive, compulsive, and automatic mechanisms of the subject's speech and behaviour. My thesis thus positions Sexton's poetry as a mode of acting-out, in which the socio-political upheavals of the twentieth century are not only expressed in directly referential terms, but are also woven into the formal fabric of the poetry itself. In addition, the following chapters show how the political lineaments of Sexton's poetry might be usefully illuminated through reference to the Cold War ideology of `containment' and the interlocking, if vexed, economies of privacy, conformity, and contamination.

Abstract:
In his Outlines of Skepticism, Sextus Empiricus claims that the Pyrrhonian Skeptic can live without holding beliefs. According to the 'Rustic' interpretation of this claim, Sextus holds that the Skeptic lives without beliefs of any kind. According to the 'Urbane' interpretation, Sextus' claim concerns only a restricted category of beliefs. I discuss each interpretation in the context of Sextus' broader philosophical stance, and argue for an Urbane interpretation. On this view, Pyrrhonism represents a practicable stance towards the world.<br>Master of Arts

Abstract:
This thesis studies nodal sextics (algebraic curves of degree six), and in particular rational sextics, in the real projective plane. Two such sextics with k nodes are called rigidly isotopic if they can be joined by a path in the space of real nodal sextics with k nodes. The main result of the first part of the thesis is a rigid isotopy classification of real nodal sextics without real nodes, generalizing Nikulin’s classification of non-singular sextics. In the second part we study sextics with real nodes and we describe the rigid isotopy classes of such sextics in the case where the sextics are dividing, i.e., their real part separates the complexification (the set of complex points) into two halves. As a main application, we give a rigid isotopy classification for those nodal real rational sextics which can be perturbed to maximal or next-to-maximal sextics in the sense of Harnack’s inequality. Our approach is based on the study of periods of K3 surfaces, drawing on the Global Torelli Theorem by Piatetski-Shapiro and Shafarevich and Kulikov’s surjectivity theorem, as well as Nikulin’s results on symmetric integral bilinear forms

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to assess attitudes toward sexting, subjective norms toward sexting, self-esteem levels, sexting behavioral intentions, and sexting behaviors (i.e. sending, posting, or sharing/forwarding sexually suggestive messages, nude/semi-nude pictures/videos, or both) among selected undergraduate students and also to determine relationships among attitudes toward sexting, subjective norms toward sexting, self-esteem levels, sexting behavioral intentions, and sexting behaviors. Results of this study showed statistically significant differences in sexting behaviors among demographic variables gender, current relationship status, lifetime sexual partners and current sexual partners. Nearly 700 (n=697) surveys were completed from selected undergraduate students during the spring semester of 2011. According to the findings, there was statistically significant positive relationship between attitudes toward sexting, subjective norms toward sexting, sexting behavioral intentions, and sexting behaviors. Also, attitudes toward sexting, subjective norms toward sexting, and sexting behavioral intentions were found to predict lifetime sexting behaviors, with behavioral intentions as the strongest predictor sexting behaviors. For non-sexters, there was statistically significant positive relationship between attitudes toward sexting, subjective norms toward sexting, and sexting behavioral intentions. Attitudes and subjective norms toward sexting are both found to be predictors of behavioral intentions to sext for lifetime and current non-sexters, with attitudes toward sexting being the strongest predictor of sexting behavioral intentions. Future research on sexting should go even further in depth to help explain reasons for sexting as well as reasons for not sexting. Also, future research should explore the benefits of sexting among consensual adults, paying particular attention to how sexting is used for sexual communication and sexual assertiveness. Recommendations for the profession of health education and health educators focused on preventing negative consequences of underage sexting, and promoting the benefits of sexting among consenting adults in relationships with mutual respect for each other.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 143-149).<br>Poets are able to express symbols in words by way of what C. G. Jung called "archetypes". This is an investigation of the feasibility that poets who wrote independently worldwide, were able to use the same imagery in their poetry without being able to copy it from each other. There are several similarities between the poets discussed. In the first place they lost a parent when they were still children. Secondly they all committed suicide and (thirdly) they were excellent poets. Their lives were characterised by a search for something they believed they could only find in death. These there issues could almost be put into a mathematical formula where [loss of significant other] + [artistic ability] = depression & suicidality/certain poetic elements (e.g. the use of "ek"/"I"). The focus of the study is the symbolism in the discussed poems, especially water, stone and moon imagery, and Jungian theories are used to explain these. Biographical information is also used to gain a better understanding of the poetry. Ingrid Jonker, Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton's poetry is initially analysed (as well as that of Eugène N. Marais and Sara Teasdale). Later more poets enter the discussion, such as Attila József, Cesare Pavese and Marina Tsvetaeva. The therapeutic value of writing poetry is investigated as well as the possibility of plagiarism, Antjie Krog's Die sterre sê 'tsau' enters the argument in order to substantiate Jung's hypotheses was well as to balance Stephen Watson's accusations of Krog. Finally the approach of this thesis gets a closer look.

Abstract:
A recent trend in the study of Anne Sexton and Sylvia Plath often dissociates Confessional poetry from the subject of the writer and her biography, claiming that the artist is in full control of her work and that her art does not have naïve mimetic qualities. However, this study proposes that subjective attributes, namely negativity and abjection, enable a powerful transformative dialectic. Specifically, it demonstrates that an emphasis on the subjective can help manifest the process of transgressing the law of One. The law of One asserts a patriarchal, monotheistic law as a social closed system and can be opposed to the bodily drives and its open dynamism. This project asserts that unique, creative voices are derived from that which is individual and personal and thus, readings of Confessional poetry are in fact best served by acknowledgment of the subjective. In order to stress the subject of the artist in Confessionalism, this study employed a psychoanalytical Kristevan approach. This enables consideration of the subject not only in terms of the straightforward narration of her life, but also in relation to her poetic language and the process of creativity where instinctual drives are at work. This study further applies a feminist reading to the subject’s poetic language and its ability to transgress the law, not necessarily in the political, macrocosmic sense of the word, but rather on the microcosmic, subjective level. Although Sexton and Plath possess similar biographies, their work does not have the same artistic value in terms of transformative capabilities. Transformation here signifies transgressing of the unity of the subject and of the authoritative father, the other within, who has prohibitive social and linguistic powers. Plath, Kristeva’s the “deadmost,” successfully confronts the unity of the law, releasing the death drive through anger. Moreover, Plath’s psychic borders are more fluid because of her ability to identify with the pre-Oedipal mother. This unsettling subject is identified by shifts in texts marked by renewal, transgression, and jouissance. Unlike Sexton, Plath is able to achieve transformation as she oscillates masochistically between the “inside” and the “outside” of her psychic borders, and between the symbolic and the semiotic. Furthermore, this enables Plath to develop the unique “Siren Voice of the Other.” In comparison, Sexton, the “dead/less,” evades any confrontation with the maternal and the performance of death in her poetry. Her case is further complicated by the discovery of a second mother. As a result, passivity becomes a main characteristic of her work. This passivity remains until the maternal abject bursts in her text and she reacts to this by performing cleansing rituals, and gravitating toward a symbolic father. Without the dynamism of transgression, Sexton’s work is heterogeneous but does not achieve ultimate transformation and jouissance. Confessional poetry, in this sense, takes on a new dimension. The life stories of the poets become important not for their pejorative, pathological aspects that focus on narrative mimesis, but rather for their manifestation as an aesthetic process. The subject of the writer becomes important as an aesthetic identity in the poems, which are rooted in real life. The main concern then becomes the aesthetic transformative dialectic between the semiotic and the symbolic in her work of art.

Thesis, Le Mans, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012LEMA3015/document.

Abstract:
Elle révèle également l’impasse où mène le poème testimonial<br>Although the poetical works of Robert Lowell and of Anne Sexton have been called “confessional”, they may rather be defined as testimonial insofar as they are discourse “haunted” by fiction. This will be shown through the analysis of the relation between literary confession, fiction and poeticity. It will also appear in the study of the poems’ relation to truth, both poets’ conceptions of truth relying on autobiographical motivations and on artistic considerations about poetical achievement viewed as truth emerging from “the structure of fiction”. Eventually, the poems of Lowell and Sexton are fictions of the self aiming at speaking the truth and, as such, they might be redefined as testimonies tempted by confession, which is exemplified in Sexton’s surrealistic search. Besides, the poetic representation of madness provides a link with, on the one hand, Augustine’s religious confession and, on the other hand, M.L. Rosenthal’s initial definition emphasizing the importance of guilt in Lowell’s “confessional” writing. But expressing determined psychological suffering in both psychoanalytical and religious terms reduces the accomplishment of confession to mere fiction of the self. Contrary to fully achieved confession, hybrid self-testifying may then prove destabilizing: it bears witness to the failure of confession and therefore to the weakening of the “I”, whose vulnerability Sexton’s tragic fate may embody. Analyzing the poetical workings of the speaker’s fragility allows to understand the consequences of the poets’ confrontation with their testimonial poems and with the reader. It also reveals to what extent testimonial poetical writing is bound to lead to an impasse

Abstract:
During the 1950s and the 1960s the confessional poetry of Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton and Adrienne Rich triggered ambivalent responses from both critics and readers. This thesis was precipitated by and focuses on these ambivalent reactions. On the one hand there were critics who viewed their poetry positively because of the way in which their poems genuinely probe the emotions. On the other hand there were critics who maintained that the poetry of these three women was just not poetry; rather their writing was compromised by their emotions. In both cases the critics make judgments about the nature of emotion in poetry and the value of these emotions and assume that emotions do not have a cerebral component. I am proceeding from the very different standpoint that the emotions have a cognitive dimension, and are an essential component in the way in which the poetry of Plath, Sexton and Rich is cognitively moulded. The emotions, in short, help to secure the poetry’s sense and meaning in a sense-making way. This use of emotions to shed light on the poetry of Plath, Sexton and Rich has to date received scant attention. The thesis bases this approach on the work of a number of theorists of the emotions. Because of the development of theories of the emotions in the last fifty years, our appreciation of the cognitive dimensions of the poetry has flourished. This thesis reasons that the emotion depicted in the poetry of Plath, Sexton and Rich makes evident their cognitive reactions to specific happenings. As a result of analysing the poetry of these three female poets, it is possible to see the shaping spirit and the cognitive dimension of emotion in their poetry and the way in which the individual emotions contributed to the structuring of the poetry...<br>Thesis (PhD Doctorate)<br>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)<br>School of Arts, Media and Culture<br>Full Text

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This Ph.D. thesis analyzes the literary works of American poets Anne Sexton and Sylvia Plath in light of Women’s and Gender Studies and considers the notions of myth and disenchantment. Plath and Sexton were labeled “confessional” poets; this study’s first section seeks to understand the underlying mechanisms of this appellation and how it participated in the construction of myths around the two poets and also aims to deconstruct these myths. Plath and Sexton met at the end of the ‘50s and influenced each other. Their poetics of disenchantment are a common trait in their literary works, from their “confessional” poems to their rewriting of fairy tales and myths which may be called “anti-tales.” Although their poetic styles differ, the themes they pursue are similar, from the incestuous trauma to the female body, from the American housewife to the representation of women through the Madonna/slut dichotomy. In this thesis’s second section, these topics are scrutinized and considered in relation to the notions of veil and modesty. Appeals for modesty stem in part from the Bostonian poetic stage of the 50s-70s, the puritan influence of New England poet Robert Lowell and the misogynistic critics of the time. This study’s third section links literature and society and emphasizes the influence of patriarchal and “poetriarchal” context on and in Plath’s and Sexton’s poetry and prose

Abstract:
Six mots. Six words with 720 possibilities of combinations meetS in the initial order after only six tours, in the permutation with crossed degradation. Six words which resound several times at the end with the verses which change meaning, as the kaleidoscope modifies colors. This mechanism has a name: the lyric sextine. A poetic shape, a numeric series, a distant music. The lyric sextine is the symbol of the meeting of the knowledges, the common roots to sciences henceforth distant and separated in spheres of specific skills. This study suggests finding, recognizing intuitively this common sense of membership between music, mathematics and poetry running over the tracks of the history of the lyric sextine, its transformations and the other forms of approaches, by questioning on the mechanisms which are integral part of the training of the word as sound, and on the way this sound is transformed into sign, how this sign becomes again sound, the number symbol, shape, rhythm. To finish comes the proposition and the study of a new variant of the lyric sextine in a project for realization of a show proposed in the form of research experience

Abstract:
This undergraduate project carried out within the scope of the Degree in Criminology of the Fernando Pessoa University deals with the theme of the use of social networks by minors and their consequent risks. In a society increasingly oriented towards new information technologies, it is important to highlight the growing phenomenon of online social networks, which in a way influence the way of life of each individual. The Social Networks, seen as factors of acculturation and socialization, are thus widely used by minors and adolescents, and these are exposed to several risks that need to be analyzed. In the first part of this project will be carried out the literature review regarding the use of the internet and social networks where it will be possible to identify the risks that present higher prevalence such as Cyberbullying, Cyberstalking and Sexting. In the second, an empirical study is presented with a research project that will focus on the application of questionnaires by inquiry in two schools composed of groups from grades 5th to 12th degree, to reach the age range between 10 and 17 years. With this methodology, it’s intended to: assess the habits of minors related to the use of the Internet; verify the prevalence of parental follow-up; to verify the existence of possible victims in the mentioned risks, and if the existing information on the subject will be adequate.<br>N/A

Abstract:
Recently, sexting has gained popularity in both popular press and academic publications. Despite the prevalence of this communicative behavior, there is limited research that focuses on a theoretical explanation as well as how it can potentially enhance relationships. The purpose of this dissertation was threefold: to utilize the multiple goals theoretical perspective to examine sender goals when sexting, to assess if multiple goals within sexting was associated with relational behaviors and outcomes, and to develop a reliable and valid scale for sexting goals. A two-phase study was implemented. In phase 1, participants provided actual sexting messages they had recently sent to another person, and also provided their goal when they sent that particular message. Participants also answered scales related to relationship, communication, and sexual satisfaction, affectionate communication, and relational maintenance behaviors. Analytic coding was utilized for the open-ended responses regarding message content and goals, and the researcher also used the responses to develop participant- and theoretically-driven scales. Nine themes were identified for the type of goal participants had when sending sext messages. For phase 2, the proposed scale for the multiple goals of sexting was added to the preexisting survey. The researcher coded 204 sexting messages provided by participants as instrumental, relational, or identity goals and conducted multiple regressions to assess how the type of goal influenced each of the five relational outcomes. Multiple regressions revealed no significant associations among multiple goals and outcomes. Finally, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis was used to assess the proposed scale for the multiple goals of sexting. The EFA revealed a four-factor solution and the CFA demonstrated factorial validity for the scale. Post hoc analysis revealed significant associations for the goals from the scale and the relational outcomes. The results of this dissertation demonstrate that multiple goals are utilized in the context of sexting, and that specific goals are important for relational outcomes.
