Five cation exchange membranes and four anion exchange membranes were tested in a three-compartment, two-membrane, electrolysis salt-splitting cell for the recycle of sodium sulfate into sodium hydroxide and sulfuric acid. The cell is further examined using DuPont Nafion 324 cation exchange membrane and Sybron Ionac MA-7500 anion exchange membrane to determine the maximum concentration of sodium hydroxide that can be produced by electrolysis salt-splitting as well as to determine the chief source of inefficiency. The crystallization kinetics of sodium sulphate from 9N sulphuric acid was studied under cooling conditions. The crystal growth and nucleation rates were determined using the Population Balance concept in a continuous mixed-suspension mixed-product-removal (MSMPR) crystallizer. The effects of supersaturation, crystal suspension density and temperature on the crystallization kinetics were all investigated. Autocausticizing, a new method to regenerate sodium hydroxide from the sodium carbonate, is intended to replace the conventional Kraft Recovery System which uses calcium hydroxide produced in a lime kiln for this purpose. Abstract:

T cell protein tyrosine phosphatase (TC-PTP / PTPN2) is an enzyme that is essential for the proper functioning of the immune system and that participates in the control of cell proliferation, and inflammation. We previously observed that TC-PTP-/- mice display various immunodeficiencies, hypersensitivity to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and die within three weeks of birth due to anemia and widespread inflammation. A recent analysis of the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium (WTCC) genome wide scan data, reported in 2007, indicated a potential role for TC-PTP in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

The kinetic and mechanistic details involved in the morphological transitions occurring in aggregates prepared from the copolymer polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) in dioxane-water mixtures and the ability of sodium dodecyl sulfate to induce architectural changes in these aggregates are described in this dissertation. The kinetics of the sphere-to-rod, rod-to-sphere, and vesicle-to-rod transitions were determined by following the change in the solution turbidity as a function of time after the transitions were induced by a sudden jump in one of the solvent components of the system. Predator cues can influence how aquatic organisms respond to anthropogenic contaminants. This study examined the effects of predator cues on behavior, metabolic rate, and sulfate (as Na2SO4) toxicity in amphipods (Gammarus minus). Predator cues included alarm cue (macerated conspecifics) and kairomone from mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis). Amphipods decreased activity and increased time in refuge when exposed to alarm cue, and increased time in refuge when exposed to kairomone.
