Full textAlthough there has been a significant reduction in air pollution since the 1990s, it remains a major public health problem, responsible for over 4.2 million premature deaths worldwide every year. At present, experts' attention is focused on ultrafine particles (PM0.1 or UFP) because of their ability to translocate into the systemic circulation and reach peripheral organs, where they are likely to have a harmful impact. Nevertheless, the knowledge of the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the toxicity of these particles is still very patchy, and most often remains focused on their main target, the lung. Thus, the main objectives of this thesis project were to provide innovative insights into the toxicokinetics (i.e., distribution/persistence) and toxicodynamics (i.e., pathophysiological mechanisms, associated cell signaling pathways) of UFP collected in urban environments, on the one hand, and the organospecific effects of UFP and the use of circulating miRNA as indicators of chronic and/or cumulative exposure to UFP in a mouse model, on the other hand. To answer these questions, Balb/cJRj mice were exposed for 3 months to various doses of UFP collected in the urban area of Lille, then analyzed in various target organs richly vascularized, and therefore directly exposed to UFP during their translocation and systemic distribution phase. The results showed that, in all target organs, the intrinsic oxidative potential of UFP undeniably induced the production of oxidative oxygen species and the activation of antioxidant defenses in sufficient quantities to restore a state of redox homeostasis, but were unable to prevent the onset of an inflammatory response in the lungs, heart and brain. Transcriptomic approaches carried out in the lungs, the target organ with the most marked deleterious effects, have suggested the deregulation of numerous signaling pathways in relation to oxidative and inflammatory responses, which constitute the central mechanisms of UFP toxicity, but also with more original toxicity mechanisms such as mitochondrial dysfunction, epithelial-mesenchymal transition and tissue remodeling, whose modulation has also been validated from a functional point of view. These promising data could ultimately contribute to better decision-making on the reduction of UFP emissions, as well as to the updating of current regulatory standards

Full textIt is well documented that the mammalian hairless gene plays a critical role in the maintenance of hair growth. The hairless mutant ph enotype is characterised by a progressive and definitive hair loss. Although the hr gene has been known for many years, the biochemical function of the encoded Hairless (Hr) remains unclear. Hr encodes a putative zinc finger protein of approximately 127 kDa acting as a corepressor of nuclear hormone receptors. It interacts with histone deacetylases (HDACs) and is localized in the nuclear Matrix-Associated Deacetylase (MAD) bodies. Allelic mutations in the murine hairless gene, which arose spontaneoulsy in a colony at the National Institute for Medical research (NIMR), Mill Hill, London in early 1998. The gene symbol hr rhbmh mice revealed a substantial deletion at the 3'-end of the gen. Our results indicate that the transcription of the gene is surprisingly unaffected by the deletion. Instead it results in ablation of the determination codon leading to a new protein. This protein encompasses a 117 amino acids extension at its C-terminal part and presents an abnormal cellular localization. In an attempt to identify partners and targets of the hairless gene, we have analysed a series of markers of hair follicle and epidermal development in these mutant mice

Full textThe generation of microwave micro-plasmas by non-intrusive excitation inside hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HC-PCF), allowed the emergence of a new platform emitting in the ultraviolet range. Based on the surface wave generation, the observed plasma columns are of 50 mm confined to a micrometric scale. Despite a plasma temperature close to the transforming the microstructured silicat this one is not affected, preserved by a particular plasma dynamics. This work includes a study on the development of inhibited coupling fiber with an expended core (i.e., core diameter> 200 μm) with short wavelength transmission bands. These transmission bands make itpossible to guide the plasma fluorescence in the ultraviolet optimized by ternary gas mixture of argon, oxygen and nitrogen. These two demonstrations are at the origin of the realization of a tunable ultraviolet plasma source with more than 20 lines ranging from 450 nm to 200 nm. With optical outputs of more than 1 μW at 314 nm and 337 nm. A final experimental study on the possibility to use the plasma as an optical amplifier medium opens the way for the realization in the near future of portable ultraviolet laser sources

Full textThe Catholicon, a philological summa by the Genoese Dominican Giovanni Balbi (13 century) comprises a grammar (books I-IV) and a lexicon (book V). The study of the sources for books III and IV aims to situate the work in the history of grammatical tradition and is part of a move to reassess the compilation. The introduction first considers how the Catholicon spread until the Renaissance. The context in which it was compiled is then presented through Balbi's social and intellectual environment. Balbi's means. Methods and goals are analysed, and this is followed by an overview of other Medieval grammar works among which the Catholicon would take its place. The study of sources will produce three levels of analysis which will be dealt with in turn. The first level deals with the structure of the compendium, how the three main subjects are connected to one another, and also their internal structure : etymologia ( the parts of speech and their accidents), diasyntastica (syntax) and figures of speech. Balbi's structural choices are assessed in relation to those of his predecessors and contemporaries. The second level involves identifying and delineating borrowings from texts, and the methodology employed. The texts are by Priscian, Donatus, the Venerable Bede, grammar books in verse, etc. , whether the borrowed references be implicit, explicit, theoretical or illustrative. The final level is devoted to lexical sources for Catholicon and focuses on links between the books ( through internal references), hence between grammar and lexicography (via Hugutio of Pisa, Papias). Full textThe subject of this doctoral dissertation is the analysis of the dynamicbehavior of ball bearings using artificial neural networks. Based on theresults of the experimental test, artificial neural networks were trained to beable to predict the amplitudes of the bearing vibration velocity. The vibrationsgenerated by the bearing depend on a number of influential parameters thatcan be divided into construction, technological and exploitation. Modelsobtained by applying artificial neural networks determined the dependencesbetween the influencing parameters and the amplitudes of the vibrationvelocity generated by the bearing. Validation of neural models wasperformed based on experimental results. The influence of each parameteron the vibration velocity amplitudes in the characteristic frequency rangeswas analyzed. The paper also presents the results of the mutual influence ofseveral parameters. The models obtained the recommended values of theinfluential bearing parameters. In the analysis of technological parameters,the following parameters were introduced: the parameter of equivalentsurface roughness, the parameter of equivalent waviness and the parameterof equivalent roundness error of raceways. The newly introduced parametersprovide a better understanding of the impact on dynamic behavior. The papershows that neural models are able to predict the bearing quality class basedon bearing parameters.

Full textThe ball end milling process of hard (hardened) steel, is usually applied in thefinishing operations of machining comlex surfaces. Modeling of this process andoptimization of its parameters are very important as an aid to understanding theprocesses and to solve practical problems. Several classic and nature-inspiredmethods were used for modeling of the output process performances and findingthe optimal values of input parameters. From traditional methods of modeling andoptimization Response Surface Methodology-RSM, Taguchi method and Taguchimethod with Gray Relational Analysis, and nature-inspired methods of modelingand optimization Genetic Algorithm-GA, Gray Wolf Optimizer-GWO and NondominantSorting Genetic Algorithm II- NSGA-II, were applied in the paper. Reliablemathematical models of the output process performances and the optimal inputparameters, confirm the validity of the application of these methods in the processof ball end milling hard (hardened) steel. The results obtained by the method of theGray Wolf Optimizer-GWO should be particulary noted. This nature-inspiredmethod is quite a new method, and so far there was no literature information onthe possibilities of its application in the cutting processes.

Full textThe bearing is an essential element in the design of rotating machines. In an industrial context, bearing failure can have extremely costly consequences. Predictive maintenance minimizes the intervention costs and warns about the state of fatigue of the mechanical component. In this frame, we propose a study of the rolling contact fatigue damage applied to thrust ball bearings. This study is twofold: numerical and experimental. The first axis consists in establishing a dynamic three-dimensional numerical model of the cyclic shift of a ball on a running surface in the presence of an indent, using the finite element method. An estimation of the size evolution of a surface initiated spall depending on loading cycles is also performed. These results are consistent with laboratory tests executed in the same conditions using a fatigue test rig dedicated to ball bearings. The second axis consists in determining a vibratory indicator using modal analysis to estimate the on-line structural damage level of the ball bearing in the presence of an indent. The technique developed in this work enables monitoring the evolution of the modal damping values based on the life cycles determined from tests in static and dynamic modes. This study will contribute to estimate the residual life of the mechanical component after onset of a spall using the finite element method and accounting for the structural damage state

Full textThe aim of this study was to investigate functional characteristics of akombucha beverage from lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.) tea. Antibacterial activity of kombucha beverages with optimum and higheracidities was tested against bacteria isolated from food and drinking water. The main active component of antibacterial activity was acetic acid, while slight activity of neutralized kombucha and unfermented tea against some test bacteria indicated presence of other antibacterial components. Total phenol concentration in unfermented tea samples, fermentation broths and kombucha beverages from lemon balm and black tea was determined spectrophotometrically whereas qualitative and quantitative concentration of polyphenolic compounds was determined by HPLC method. Antioxidant activity on DPPH and hydroxyl radical in the same samples was determined on an ESR spectrometer. Fermentation broth and kombucha beverage from lemon balm had higher antioxidant activity against both radicals than the samples from black tea. Kombucha beverage from lemon balm with optimum acidity had higher antioxidant activity than unfermented lemon balm tea. The main active components of antioxidant activity were probably rosmarinic acid and quercetin. Antiproliferative activity of lemon balm tea and kombucha was measured by sulforhodamine B colorimetric assay on HeLa (cervix epitheloid carcinoma), HT-29 (colon adenocarcinoma), and MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma) cell lines. By applying concentrations higher than 100 μg/ml, tested samples did not stimulate proliferation of cell lines. The possibility of simultaneous lactic acid and kombucha fermentation was tested as well. When starter cultures and Lactobacillus spp. isolates were applied, the content of Land D- lactic acid increased during fermentation, although lactic acid bacteria (except L. hilgardii isolated from sour dough) showed low resistance to the conditions during fermentation and beverages storage. Acetic acid bacteria isolated from local tea fungus were identified by PCR method. Two isolates might be Gluconobacter oxydans and one - Gluconacetobacter hansenii.

Full textThesis for a Candidate of Engineering Sciences, specialty 05.11.13 – devices and methods of control and determination of substances. – National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute" Kharkiv, 2017. The thesis solved the current applied scientific task of improving the accuracy of direction in space at a point source of gamma radiation (SGR) of continuous and pulsed nature. For the first time it was developed a precise method using the means for determining the direction of the point of SGR with asymmetrical sinks in plane which measurement error is not beyond ± 0,0138°, by determining the direction of the boundary between the maximum and minimum thickness of the asymmetric absorber. The first time it was established the effect of increasing the size of the gamma-quantum rays scattering in passing along their copper-lead surface, the usage of which allowed to significantly increase the accuracy of determination of the direction of the point SGR. The proposed physical-mathematical model to determine the direction in space at point SGR, including pulse, asymmetric and spherical sinks, which allowed depending on the position of point SGR in space to determine the thickness of sinks and theoretical coefficients of proportionality, which ensure the determination of the angle, and therefore significantly increase the accuracy of the method and develop precision measuring direction SGR. Having obtainded further development the method of determining the direction in space at point continuous and pulsed SGR through the use of physical and mathematical models and theoretical proportionality coefficients obtained from the ratio of transmission coefficient detectors, calibration developed product for all angles in space and energy SGR, and use of four blocks from the multichannel analyzer detecting pulses of gamma radiation spectrometer operating in standby time. It was developed means of determining the direction of the gamma-ray source with spherical and asymmetrical sinks that allow you to design devices for determining the direction of gamma-ray sources, including pulsed. Experimental studies have shown the ability to determine the direction of continuous and pulsed SGR in space with an error not exceeding 16°. The results of the thesis introduced in Karazin KNU, a state institution "Grigoriev Institute for medical Radiology NAMS of Ukraine", National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine and the military training faculty NTU "KPI".

This dissertation investigates the effects of different light sources imaging on Ball Grid Array solder balls and the improvements. First, use 3D drawing software to design a 3D pattern and import the file into optical simulation software to analyse the illumination. Second, use oblique lighting to design a multi-ring-guide constituter to achieve a uniform illumination. Lastly, analyse the relationship of the optimization imaging and the light source’s altitude. The study shows that the use of oblique blue light multi-ring-guide constituter can make solder ball-imaging surface clear and conspicuously reduce the system error. Sub-pixel method is used to measure the accurate dimension when dealing with the section of image process. It verifies the result that the diameter of a solder ball, which is lightened through a specific design, is between 0.72mm to 0.78mm. The result is more accurate than the the diameter of a solder ball, which is lightened through traditional ring light, is between 0.56mm to 0.62mm. The specific designed light source mode will get a better solder ball image and will efficiently reduce the number of bulbs from 216 to 157. Thus, the stability and accuracy of BGA Solder ball detect system also meet the demand of manufactured processes standard and also it effectively improves the lack of light source in traditional ring lighting.

This research is to use the standardized heavy and soft floor impact sources of Chinese National Standard CNS8464(Automobile Tire) and the International Standard ISO140-11(Rubber ball) for field measurements of impact sound insulation of floors, with that to analyze the correlation about floor impact sound of both. ■ Contents 1. The research collates and treats the theory and the code about impact sound of floors and the standardized heavy and soft floor impact sources, in order to make sure and establish the standard test measure and evaluation approach correlated. 2. Redacting the standard test measure is according to International Standard (ISO)and Chinese National Standard (CNS), choices as steel constructs, reinforced concrete and wooden construction buildings use small floor specimen for field measurements of impact sound insulation of floors. 3. To carry on the difference comparing and analysis of correlation regression is aimed at two standardized heavy and soft floor impact sources with the impact sound pressure level, the normalize sound pressure level, the standardized impact sound pressure level, the reduction of impact sound pressure level, and rating of impact sound insulation ■ Results Through studying real example to discover the correlation of the floor impact sound about two standardized heavy and soft floor impact sources: 1. Difference of the impact sounds’ the average in the reinforced concrete floor is the most heavy, the steel compound floor takes second place, wooden floor is minimum. The reduction of impact sound pressure level of two standardized heavy and soft floor impact source in wooden floor is most constant, that has 2.5~3.5dB in 63Hz~1250Hz and 2 dB upward 1250Hz. The steel compound floor has 1.0dB odds in 63Hz~1000Hz, odds of the reinforced concrete floor changes greatly in every frequency. 2. The coefficient of correlation with the standardized impact sound pressure level of two floor impact sources in 63Hz,125 Hz,250Hz, and 1000 Hz is the biggest and the correlation with the normalize sound pressure level of both in 500Hz,2000 Hz, and 4000Hz is the best, so both of every frequency sounds can use the conversion of regression equation. 3. About every rating of impact sound insulations, the numerical analysis values R are0.938 with dB(A) values of the rubber ball and L value of automobile tire is the best, so the regression equation :Y =0.774X+12.217(Y: L values of automobile tire, X: dB(A) values of the rubber ball) can appraise than rating of impact sound insulations of two standardized heavy and soft floor impact sources.

Full textO objetivo deste trabalho de investigação consistiu na análise do ruído aero- acústico emitido por dois ventiladores de diâmetros diferentes aplicados em duas unidades exteriores de bombas de calor, recorrendo a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) e Computational Aeroacoustics (CAA). O modelo acústico Broadband Noise Source (BNS) e o modelo de turbulência Transition SST, implementados no código comerical Fluent 19.0, foram utilizados para detetar o ruído da camada limite dos diversos casos de estudo, utilizando simulações em regime permanente. Os objetivos do estudo estão divididos em três componentes: a análise da relação entre o diâmetro e a velocidade de ponta com o ruído aeroacústico, o estudo da influência do disco do motor na acústica da camada limite e a análise de arestas serradas e ventiladores com cavidades inspiradas nas bolas de Golf. Os resultados indicam um potential para redução do ruído aerodinâmico de 3,3 e 4 dB no modo de baixa e alta velocidade, respetivamente, utilizando o ventilador maior no chassis mais pequeno, uma vez que requer velocidades mais baixas para atingir o mesmo caudal de ar. Foi descoberto que o disco do motor influencia a distribuição do caudal à saída do ventilador e que previne o fluxo inverso de ar. Apesar de influenciar os pontos de operação do ventilador, utilizar o disco demonstra um potencial de redução de ruído de 0,4 e 0,8 dB num dos modelos nas velocidades anteriormente mencionadas, após ajustes para os requisitos de caudal. Por fim, foi descoberto que adicionar cavidades a regiões da superfície de ventiladores com tendência para separações de fluxo de ar pode prevenir este fenómeno e reduzir a energia cinética turbulenta, favorecendo o ruído da camada limite. Este fenómeno torna-se mais evidente em condições de operação perto do stall aerodinâmico. Não se registaram melhorias significativas no modelo com arestas serradas. Medições experimentais realizadas num túnel entálpico e numa câmara semi-anecóica dos três protótipos impressos à escala reduzida mostraram melhorias na ordem dos 3,7 e 5,3 dB(A), a 350 rpm, com os modelos com cavidades e com arestas serradas, contudo novas medições devem ser conduzidas com igual qualidade de impressão para confirmação dos resultados
