Abstract:
Economic and environmental considerations are driving the need for a reliable supply of home grown high protein non-grass forage for organic livestock production. A review of literature highlighted the potential of three lupin species as mono-crops or bi-crops with spring sown cereals, for this purpose. The Conductance model was postulated as a potential tool for predicting the yields and protein contents of such crops and for selecting seeding rates for optimizing protein and dry matter yield. Field trials were carried out in 2005 and 2006 at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, UK, to determine the yields, quality and suitability for ensiling of three species of forage lupins grown as bi-crops with a range of spring sown cereals, under organic farming conditions. The Conductance model informed by data from spaced plants was developed as a tool for selecting the most appropriate cultivars and predicting crop performance. Predictions were also made of forage dry matter yields and crude protein contents of the forages in mono and bi-cropping systems. Bi-crop combinations which promised the best potential for yields and quality from the predictions were tested in field trials and the results compared with the predictions. The Conductance model proved to be a reasonably robust tool for predicting yielos and protein contents. Attention was drawn to the strengths and weaknesses of the model as a tool for predicting yield of such crops as those studied. Of the species studied, white lupin (Lupinus a/bus) bi-crops of cv. Dieta with spring triticale (Triticoseca/e Wittmack) cv. Logo or spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) cv. Paragon produced the most suitable combinations for organic production in the prevailing conditions. Dry matter yields achieved at 126 -130 days from sowing were within the range 11 - 20 tha-1 • Bi-crop yields were substantially greater than the constituent mono-crops and biological efficiency, estimated as Land Equivalent Ratio and Nitrogen Equivalent Ratio, was enhanced. Ensiling studies confirmed the superior quality of the bi-crops. Sowing in late April and harvesting at about 112 days from sowing produced marginally the best silages with estimated MEs in a range 11.5 -12.8 MJ kg-1 0M and crude proteins of 100 -195 gkg-10M. It was concluded that in the conditions obtaining on the experimental site that ' ...~ . white lupin/cereal bi-crops produced a reliable and predictable source of good quality non-grass forage which could be recommended for organic livestock production in this part of the UK. While the Conductance model produced good predictions of the yield and quality of vegetative growth, and could be further developed for this purpose with commercial applications, the predictions of reproductive growth and senescence were less convincing and needed further development. Further studies could also be usefullyundertaken to optimize seeding densities for optimum yield and crude protein content of specific forage lupin/cereal bi-crops. Larger plot or field assessments in other locations will be necessary together with animal studies in due course, towards commercialization.

Abstract:
In the current situation of a growing world population, it is not possible to ensure the production of sufficient food without phytosanitary products (PPs). However, their use has considerable drawbacks such as high costs of chemical control programs against pests and diseases. For instance, in the integrated pest control strategies implemented in orchards and vineyards they may represent up to 30% of the total production costs. Furthermore, the use of PPs can pose important risks to human health and to the environment. In addition, broad sectors of society increasingly distrust and reject the use of PPs. In order to reduce the negative impacts of PPs, the European Union developed the green deal and, through the implementation of the “from farm to fork” strategy, aims to reach a 50% reduction of the consumption and risks associated to PPs for the year 2030. In this context, reliable scientific and technical tools are needed to allow adjustment of application doses to the minimum doses required for effective control, that is without reducing the harvest. Throughout this thesis, the DOSA3D decision support system is presented and validated, this system allows to adjust the volume and dose rates of the PPs for fruit crops (3D crops) according to the characteristics of the crop (leaf area and geometry), the sprayer and the target pest or disease. The validation of the DOSA3D system has been carried out for both uniform applications and zonal applications based on vigour maps, according to the following two criteria: on-target product deposition and efficacy of pest and disease control. In order to do so, the following hypothesis were tested: i) the LAI or leaf area index (the most relevant parameter for adjusting the dose) is estimated correctly from the geometry of the vegetation and the phenological stages of the vineyard; ii) the efficiency of the sprayer, calculated by means of the DOSA3D system is adjusted to the operational reality of the applications; iii) deposition on leaves is a parameter that correlates well to the biological efficacy of the application; iv) the volume rate established by the DOSA3D system allows to obtain leaf depositions close to the objective threshold (1.2 µl cm-2) and, consequently, achieve the appropriate efficacy; and v) the zonal application in vineyards based on vigour maps, after adjusting the dose by means of the DOSA3D system, allows to achieve optimal depositions and therefore the expected biological efficacy for the different vigour zones. The body of this thesis is divided into three parts. The first part consists of a revision of the state of the art regarding dose expression and adjustment and different existing dose adjustment decision support systems. The second part of the thesis includes two chapters dedicated to the technical rationale of the DOSA3D system and its validation in vineyards. Sections along the vine trellis were defoliated in order to validate the LAI estimation model of the DOSA3D system for trellises up to 1.25 m wide. Likewise, the ISO standard 22522:2007 was used to determine the foliar deposition, this evidenced a marked tendency to the homogenisation of the depositions as LAI increases. In addition, the DOSA3D system has been validated throughout the entire season for the control of powdery mildew (Erysiphe necator Schw.), in four independent trials in which the dose was reduced up to 60%, compared to the doses used by the farmer. In the third part of the thesis, the DOSA3D system is validated for zonal applications of adjusted doses in spatially variable vineyards. Zonal classification maps, and the corresponding prescription maps, were built based on the Plant Cell Density (PCD) vigour index, established from aerial multispectral images. Leaf deposition did not present significant differences between vigour classes and the reduced-dose applications for control of yellow spider-mite (Eotetranychus carpini Oud.) and leafhoppers (Empoasca vitis G. and Jacobiasca lybica Berg. & Zanon) allowed to reduce pest density bellow the economic damage thresholds in both vigour classes, resulting in PPs reductions between 16.6 and 24.8% in low vigour zones. The conclusions reached in this thesis provide the scientific and technical evidences required for the safe use of the DOSA3D system for delivery of reliable control of pests and diseases. The system has proved to be a useful tool due to its benefits for stakeholders (farmers, advisors in plant protection, the chemical industry, constructors of application equipment and regulatory authorities) and its contribution to the achievement of European Commission objectives regarding reduction in the use of PPs.

Abstract:
[Abstract]: Since early settlement, agriculture has been one of the main industries contributing to the livelihoods of most rural communities in Australia. The wheat grain industry is Australia’s second largest agricultural export commodity, with an average value of $3.5 billion per annum. Climate variability and change, higher input costs, and world commodity markets have put increased pressure on the sustainability of the grain industry. This has lead to an increasing demand for accurate, objective and near real-time crop production information by industry. To generate such production estimates, it is essential to determine crop area planted at the desired spatial and temporal scales. However, such information at regional scale is currently not available in Australia. The aim of this study was to determine broadacre crop area estimates through the use of multi-temporal satellite imagery for major Australian winter crops. Specifically, the objectives were to: (i) assess the ability of a range of approaches to using multi-temporal Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery to estimate total end-of-season winter crop area; (ii) determine the discriminative ability of such remote sensing approaches in estimating planted area for wheat, barley and chickpea within a specific cropping season; (iii) develop and evaluate the methodology for determining the predictability of crop area estimates well before harvest; and (iv) validate the ability of multi-temporal MODIS approaches to determine the pre-harvest and end-of-season winter crop area estimates for different seasons and regions.MODIS enhanced vegetation index (EVI) was used as a surrogate measure for crop canopy health and architecture, for two contiguous shires in the Darling Downs region of Queensland, Australia. Multi-temporal approaches comprising principal component analysis (PCA), harmonic analysis of time series (HANTS), multi-date MODIS EVI during the crop growth period (MEVI), and two curve fitting procedures (CF1, CF2) were derived and applied. These approaches were validated against the traditional single-date approach. Early-season crop area estimates were derived through the development and application of a metric, i.e. accumulation of consecutive 16-day EVI values greater than or equal to 500, at different periods before flowering. Using ground truth data, image classification was conducted by applying supervised (maximum likelihood) and unsupervised (K-means) classification algorithms. The percent correctly classified and kappa coefficient statistics from the error matrix were used to assess pixel-scale accuracy, while shire-scale accuracy was determined using the percent error (PE) statistic. A simple linear regression of actual shire-scale data against predicted data was used to assess accuracy across regions and seasons. Actual shire-scale data was acquired from government statistical reports for the period 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2004 for the Darling Downs, and 2005 and 2006 for the entire Queensland cropping region. Results for 2003 and 2004 showed that multi-temporal HANTS, MEVI, CF1, CF2 and PCA methods achieved high overall accuracies ranging from 85% to 97% to discriminate between crops and non-crops. The accuracies for discriminating between specific crops at pixel scale were less, but still moderate, especially for wheat and barley (lowest at 57%). The HANTS approach had the smallest mean absolute percent error of 27% at shire-scale compared to other multi-temporal approaches. For early-season prediction, the 16-day EVI values greater than or equal to 500 metric showed high accuracy (94% to 98%) at a pixel scale and high R2 (0.96) for predicting total winter crop area planted. The rigour of the HANTS and the 16-day EVI values greater than or equal to 500 approaches was assessed when extrapolating over the entire Queensland cropping region for the 2005 and 2006 season. The combined early-season estimate of July and August produced high accuracy at pixel and regional scales with percent error of 8.6% and 26% below the industry estimates for 2005 and 2006 season, respectively. These satellite-derived crop area estimates were available at least four months before harvest, and deemed that such information will be highly sought after by industry in managing their risk. In discriminating among crops at pixel and regional scale, the HANTS approach showed high accuracy. Specific area estimates for wheat, barley and chickpea were, respectively, 9.9%, -5.2% and 10.9% (for 2005) and -2.8%, -78% and 64% (for 2006). Closer investigation suggested that the higher error in 2006 area estimates for barley and chickpea has emanated from the industry figures collected by the government.Area estimates of total winter crop, wheat, barley and chickpea resulted in R2 values of 0.92, 0.89, 0.82 and 0.52, when contrasted against the actual shire-scale data. A significantly high R2 (0.87) was achieved for total winter crop area estimates in Augusts across all shires for the 2006 season. Furthermore, the HANTS approach showed high accuracy in discriminating cropping area from non-cropping area and highlighted the need for accurate and up-to-date land use maps. This thesis concluded that time-series MODIS EVI imagery can be applied successfully to firstly, determine end-of-season crop area estimates at shire scale. Secondly, capturing canopy green-up through a novel metric (i.e. 16-day EVI values greater than or equal to 500) can be utilised effectively to determine early-season crop area estimates well before harvest. Finally, the extrapolability of these approaches to determine total and specific winter crop area estimates showed good utility across larger areas and seasons. Hence, it is envisaged that this technology is transferable to different regions across Australia. The utility of the remote sensing techniques developed in this study will depend on the risk agri-industry operates at within their decision and operating regimes. Trade-off between risk and value will depend on the accuracy and timing of the disseminated crop production forecast.

Abstract:
The topics of the PhD thesis have the objective of assessing three different aspects of the renewable energy sector: i) sizing of plants for the production of biogas through anaerobic digestion of agricultural waste and by-products of agro-industries; ii) evaluation of the mechanization and energetic aspects of the cultural practices and the harvesting of oil crops; iii) assessment of the sustainability of biodiesel production from Linum usitatissimum L. and Camelina sativa, with particular attention to the pressing of the seeds and the trans-esterification of vegetable oils. As regards the first topic the aim of the work was to develop a procedure for verifying the availability of biomass for biogas production in a territory of Ragusa province (south-east Sicily) and to calculate the power of a co-generator engine for a biogas plant taking in consideration the quantity and the biogas yields of this biomass. In order to assess the quantity of biogas and electricity production per year two hypothesis have been evaluated. The first examines the available biomass for only some months of the year and the second examines the available biomass all the year round. With regard to the second and third topic, the purpose of the research activities was primarily concerned with the following aspects: to calculate the quantitative parameters of mechanization such as work capacities, unitary time, fuel consumptions of farming practices to calculate the qualitative parameters of the work done during the seeding and harvesting such as the product obtained in respect of the product expected; to assess the cultivation sustainability of unconventional oil crops as Linum usitatissimum L. and Camelina sativa, in south-eastern Sicily for biodiesel production in terms of energy used compared to that obtained, by means of EROI index; to analyse the mechanical pressing of seeds in terms of a) vegetable oil yields and chemical characteristics; b) machine work capacity; c) energy consumptions; d) characterization of the operating parameters of the screw press plant; to evaluation the trans-esterification process in terms of a) yield into biodiesel by varying the temperature of the process; b) yield into biodiesel by varying the amount of methanol and potash; c) physical-chemical characteristics of FAME according to EN 14214

Abstract:
This study was born out of the desire to analyze the complex soil management problem faced by individual economic agents as well as society. The focus of this study, however, was on the theoretical formulation and estimation of partial equilibrium dynamic economic models directed toward optimizing the private use of the soil resource. In particular, four empirical representative farm models were formulated. Solutions to the four representative farm models showed that sizable reductions in topsoil loss, which contributes to non-point source pollution, and aggravates the crop productivity impacts of soil erosion, can be accomplished by adopting alternative support practices. Because of the change in support practices, reductions in the present value of net returns are expected, but this decrease in return was found to be minimal when compared to reductions in topsoil loss. Policy implications as well as several policy recommendations stemming from those results, with respect to soil conservation, are outlined and analyzed.<br>Ph. D.

The effect of soil tillage, crop rotation and nitrogen fertiliser rates on mineral-N levels in the soil, nitrogen levels in plants, wheat growth and yield components, grain yield as well as quality parameters of spring wheat were determined. Although the tillage treatments tested were initiated in 1976, present crop rotations and nitrogen application rates were only applied since 1990. Most of the data that are discussed however was recorded during the 1997 to 2001 period. The trial was designed as a randomised complete block with a split-plot arrangement and four replicates. Main plots were tillage methods namely conventional tillage (CT), tine tillage (TT), minimum tillage (MT) and no tillage (NT). Crop rotations used were continuous wheat (WW) and wheatl lupin/wheat/canola (WLWC). Both soil and crop data were recorded. The results of this study showed the differences in total mineral-N content of the soil. N-contents of wheat, wheat growth and yield components as well as wheat quality parameters were found between tillage treatments, crop rotations used as well as N- fertiliser rates applied. Response however, varied largely between years due to annual variation in especially total precipitation and distribution of rainfall. The inclusion of a legume crop (lupin) and canola in the rotation with wheat was found to have only a small effect probably due to the fact that lupins were grown once in a four year cycle only. Application of different nitrogen rates did increase the mineral-N in the soil, but the effect did not last very long in most years due to either N-leaching or plant uptake. To ensure sufficient mineral-N levels, late application of N-fertiliser will therefore be needed. Minimum tillage or reduced tillage performs better than conventional tillage in low rainfall years. In general these tillage systems should be combined with crop rotation to ensure that yields are comparable to that obtained with conventional tillage.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die ontwikkeling, graanopbrengs en bakkwaliteit van koring (Tritium aestivum L.) in reaksie teenoor gewasratasie, metode van grondbewerking en N-bemestingspeil is in 'n lang tennyn sllldie op Langgewens Proefplaas, naby Malmesbury in die Weskaap provinsie van die Republiek van Suid-Afrika, bepaal. Abstract:
The endeavour to ‘redesign’ life at the molecular level has been widely characterised as controversial. Subsequently, agricultural biotechnology has rarely been out of the news in Australia and elsewhere throughout the last few decades during its development. Proponents are certain of the benefits, while critics are equally certain of the costs or hazards. Such polarisation is especially intense with regard to the introduction of genetically modified (GM) food crops. This thesis presents the findings from a survey of Australian canola farmers and their perspectives on the widescale introduction and regulation of GM food crops in Australia in relation to scientific, social, environmental and commercial risk and uncertainty. It also draws upon an analysis of GM regulation in Australia to determine how farmers have been involved in GM technology policy making...<br>Thesis (PhD Doctorate)<br>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)<br>School of Environmental Sciences<br>Faculty of Science, Environment, Engineering and Technology<br>Full Text

Abstract:
Demais resultados detalhados são encontrados no desenvolvimento de cada capítulo.<br>With the increasing use of irrigation in animal production systems, the demand for studies in the area of water consumption of forage plants increases to obtain more precise measures for the purpose of improving water management in pastures. When this management is carried out from climatic elements, one of the strategies is the use of models to estimate crop evapotranspiration (ETc), and for this it is necessary to know the values of the crop coefficient (Kc) throughout the phenological cycle. However, there are still few Kc determination studies for tropical forages, in order to fill the gap of the lack of information to the users and technicians that guide the irrigation in forage. The purpose this study, the was to determine the water consumption and culture coefficient of Urochloa brizantha (Syn. Brachiaria brizantha) cv. Marandu in a system of exclusive cultivation and intercropped with winter forages (Oat-black and Azevém). As secondary objectives, we sought to: (i) determine the water consumption of forages with capacitive probe; (Ii) to measure biometric and productive parameters of forages along the cycles; (Iii) to correlate the evolution of Kc throughout the growth period with the leaf area index (LAI), forage canopy height (ADF) and degree-days (GD). The experiment was carried out at the \"Luiz de Queiroz\" College of Agriculture (ESALQ/USP), in two plots with an individual area of 144 m², in which lysimeters were installed in the center, with automatic weighing and drainage systems. These lysimeters were used to measure the ETc and estimate the Kc from the comparison between measured values and estimates of reference evapotranspiration (ETo) with data from the Meteorological Station located at ESALQ, 100 m away from the experimental area. The period from February 10 to October 11, 2016 was analyzed with crop cycles of varied duration due to crop phenology. The results showed that both cultivation systems (single and intercropped Marandu grass) require considerable volumes of water for maximum production. However during the seasonal period, the Marandu grass is not efficient in the conversion to dry matter produced. The use of the capacitive probe as an estimate of evapotranspiration presents different results from lysimeters, but with significant correlations. The use of growth model to estimate Kc explains a practical use. Further detailed results are found in the development of each chapter.

Abstract:
The object of the research project was to propose and develop innovative theoretical methods for evaluating mass and energy exchange processes within one of the most relevant crop of the agricultural Sicilian context. The study was conceived as a long monitoring program of micrometeorological features of the study orange orchard at different spatial scales (plant, orchard, farm). Different micrometeorological methods, mainly based on Surface Renewal theory, were studied and tested, in order to provide reliable and low cost estimates of sensible heat fluxes within the plant-atmosphere system. Micrometeorological techniques were integrated with in situ measurements of transpiration by up-scaled sap flow techniques, physiological plant features and microclimatic characteristics of the study area. Derived actual crop evapotranspiration fluxes, by means of the resolution of the energy balance equation opportunely corrected for closure, and crop coefficient values were analyzed. All these efforts may contribute to address irrigation water scheduling towards water saving measures.

Abstract:
*‘Pasja’ (Brassica campestris x napus) and kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala L.) were grown at Lincoln, Canterbury, New Zealand in 2008 with different levels of phosphorus (P) fertiliser. Banded or broadcast P fertiliser was applied at 0, 20, 40 and 60 kg P/ha at establishment. Total dry matter (DM) production, the proportion of the leaf and stem and leaf area development were measured over time and related to the biophysical environment. For ‘Pasja’, final DM increased with P rate from 3730 kg DM/ha to ~4900 kg DM/ha at 60 kg P/ha. For kale the increase was from 8710 kg DM/ha for the control to ~11000 kg DM/ha for all P treatments. The leaf to stem ratio declined from 22-31 at 17 days after emergence to 10.4 at the final harvest for ‘Pasja’, which meant the crop was effectively made up mainly of leaf (~90%). The ratio for kale declined from 2.7 at 24 days after emergence to 0.64 at the final harvest. The leaf to stem ratio for both species did not respond to either the method of application or rate of P. Seedling DM accumulation increased with applied P over the first 10 to 17 DAE for ‘Pasja’ and kale respectively. The crops went from shoot growth priority to root growth. The phyllochron of both species was unaffected by P application but responded linearly to the temperature above 0°C. For ‘Pasja’ the phyllochron was 60°Cd compared with 109°Cd for kale. As a consequence ‘Pasja’ developed its canopy and reached critical leaf area index (LAIcrit) earlier than kale. Leaf area index (LAI) for the control crops of both species was lower than for P fertiliser treatments with a maximum of 3.6 for ‘Pasja’ and 3.8 for kale. There was no difference in leaf area indices among the P fertiliser treatments for ‘Pasja’, while kale LAI differed with the rate of P application up to 40 kg P/ha. Total accumulated intercepted solar radiation (RIcum) was 8 and 11% greater for ‘Pasja’ and kale crops respectively when P was applied compared with the control. Thus, the difference in total dry matter yield due to P application was attributed to the difference in RIcum. Neither the method of application or rate of P applied affected the radiation use efficiency (RUE) of either crop. For ‘Pasja’ the RUE was 1.1 g DM/MJ PAR and for kale 1.33 g DM/MJ PAR. Based on this research, it was concluded that P application increased RIcum as a result of increased LAI. The difference in total DM yield was attributed to differences in RIcum. It is recommended that farmers growing ‘Pasja’ and kale under similar conditions to this experiment should apply 40 kg P/ha for ‘Pasja’ and band 20 kg P/ha for kale. *‘Pasja’ is considered both as a species and cultivar in this document as it marketed as such in New Zealand. Technically ‘Pasja’ is a leaf turnip.

Abstract:
With the advancement of computer computing power and the increasing availability of high spatial resolution images, retrieval methods can now benefit from more accurate simulations of the Radiative Transfer (RT) models within the vegetation. The objective of this work is to propose and evaluate efficient ways to retrieve leaf and canopy characteristics from close and remote sensing observations by using RT models based on a realistic description of the leaf and canopy structures. At the leaf level, we first evaluated the ability of the different versions of the PROSPECT model to estimate biochemical variables like chlorophyll (Cab), water and dry matter content. We then proposed the FASPECT model to describe the optical properties differences between the upper and lower leaf faces by considering a four-layer system. After calibrating the specific absorption coefficients of the main absorbing material, we validated FASPECT against eight measured ground datasets. We showed that FASPECT simulates accurately the reflectance and transmittance spectra of the two faces and overperforms PROSPECT for the upper face measurements. Moreover, in the inverse mode, the dry matter content estimation is significantly improved with FASPECT as compared to PROSPECT. At the canopy level, we used the physically based and unbiased rendering engine, LuxCoreRender to compute the radiative transfer from a realistic 3D description of the crop structure. We checked its good performances by comparison with the state of the art 3D RT models using the RAMI online model checker. Then, we designed a speed-up method to simulate canopy reflectance from a limited number of soil and leaf optical properties. Based on crop specific databases simulated from LuxCoreRender for wheat and maize and crop generic databases simulated from a 1D RT model, we trained some machine learning inversion algorithms to retrieve canopy state variables like Green Area Index GAI, Cab and Canopy Chlorophyll Content (CCC). Results on both simulations and in situ data combined with SENTINEL2 images showed that crop specific algorithms outperform the generic one for the three variables, especially when the canopy structure breaks the 1D turbid medium assumption such as in maize where rows are dominant during a significant part of the growing season

Abstract:
For decades, there has been significant investment in the development of agricultural technologies that aim to increase productivity of smallholder farmers in Africa. But farm output and productivity have stagnated and poverty rates have remained high and even increasing in some areas. At the same time, increases in human population levels have resulted in rising demand for food as well as for arable land. The growing intensification of farming has been accompanied by degradation of wild lands, including tropical forests and wetlands, at an alarming rate. Further pressure on fragile land has come from associated urbanization, leading to agricultural land being converted to residential and industrial uses with serious consequences for agricultural production and food supply. The recent increases in food prices across the globe as well as South Africa have drawn attention to this problem even more strongly. The main objective of the current study was to investigate farmer’s perception of the relative importance of crop-livestock integration in the small holder farming systems. Data were collected from 70 emerging and smallholder farmers selected by stratified random sampling in the communities surrounding Alice, Middledrift and the Seymour- Balfour area of Nkonkobe municipality of the Eastern Cape Province. To collect the data, a semi-structure questionnaire was administered to the respondents through face-to-face interviews. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize the farmers in terms of their socio-economic and demographic backgrounds. A series of multiple linear regression models and a binary logistic regression equation were fitted to determine the factors influencing farmers’ perception and how these in turn contribute to the decision to adopt or not to adopt crop-livestock integration. The results of the study reveal that small farmers in the Nkonkobe municipality have the possibility of realizing immense benefits from the integrated systems which also have the potential to lead to substantial improvements of the physical, chemical and biological soil properties. There is clear evidence of widespread interest to experiment with the practices based on the strong positive perceptions that a majority of the survey farmers exhibited during the course of the survey. But the farmers are facing challenges in coping with the associated complexities of competition on land, and management skill which are often in limited supply. That in most cases is not enough and efficient even to manage one of these two enterprises alone and reduction in crops yield due to use of manure as a substitute of fertilizer. Constraints to integrating crops and livestock include the competition for resources, especially land. Managing two types of farming on the same farm was perceived as difficult and many respondents held the view that use of waste of one enterprise as input to the other enterprise can reduce productivity. For example some farmers considered that the use of manure to improve soil fertility may not lead to output growth to the same extent as the use of fertilizer. A number of farmers (86%) pointed out that they only market their produce after deducting their consumption share, highlighting the crucial role of food security as a motivation for crop-livestock integration. Complementation of inputs rather than substituting inputs is required to render the system more productive and sustainable as costs are minimized and output is boosted. Associations of grain and livestock producers are useful for filling these gaps which include limited access to credit, technology and knowledge and can promote the adoption of a crop-livestock system.

Abstract:
Subsistence agriculture appears to be the principal production activity in the target villages 80% of the active population interviewed is involved in such activities. For a long time, self-consumption has been the main orientation of crop production. However, food-producing trade has gained a lot of economic importance these last years. By so doing farmers find alternative income source after cocoa price has dropped while the urban population, not involved in agriculture, has significantly increased. Regardless of the motivations behind the choice of farmers, food-producing trade leads to income diversification and financial power aiming at improving the living conditions of rural people. Since 1960, the central government of Cameroon has been trying to change believes that restrict food crop production to self-consumption in the households. The crucial economic crisis associated with agricultural export products led to Food-producing trade intensification. This objective has been accompanied by Common Group Initiative (CGI) encouragement and other financing subsidy bodies in the rural areas. It is however worthy noticing that, the villages of Mvila division are far to emerge in income generating activities as many households are still timid in adopting food-producing trade. Therefore, the contribution of such activities to poverty reduction is still insufficient. This kind of contradiction can be justified by several factors, including farmer dependence on cocoa farming or farmer fatigue on agriculture and marketing in general. This situation is also sustained by the lack of modernization of the productive and commercial food crop equipments. That global environment leads to decrease of agricultural production volumes and economic return while the risks increase in rural areas. Although some farmer organizations obtain good results, the scale of the current challenges greatly restricts the feasibility of rural households' poverty alleviation initiatives

Abstract:
<div>Leaf Area Index (LAI) is an important variable for both for characterizing plant canopy and as an input to many crop models. It is a dimensionless quantity broadly defined as the total one-sided leaf area per unit ground area, and is estimated over agriculture row crops by both direct and indirect methods. Direct methods, which involve destructive sampling, are laborious and time-consuming, while indirect methods such as remote sensing-based approaches have multiple sources of uncertainty. LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) remotely sensed data acquired from manned aircraft and UAVs’ have been investigated to estimate LAI based on physical/geometric features such as canopy gap fraction. High-resolution point cloud data acquired with a laser scanner from any platform, including terrestrial laser scanning and mobile mapping systems, contain random noise and outliers. Therefore, outlier detection in LiDAR data is often useful prior to analysis. Applications in agriculture are particularly challenging, as there is typically no prior knowledge of the statistical distribution of points, description of plant complexity, and local point densities, which are crop dependent. This dissertation first explores the effectiveness of using LiDAR data to estimate LAI for row crop plants at multiple times during the growing season from both a wheeled vehicle and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Linear and nonlinear regression models are investigated for prediction utilizing statistical and plant structure-based features extracted from the LiDAR point cloud data and ground reference obtained from an in-field plant canopy analyzer and leaf area derived from destructive sampling. LAI estimates obtained from support vector regression (SVR) models with a radial basis function (RBF) kernel developed using the wheel-based LiDAR system and UAVs are promising, based on the value of the coefficient of determination (R2) and root mean squared error (RMSE) of the residuals. </div><div>This dissertation also investigates approaches to minimize the impact of outliers on discrete return LiDAR acquired over crops, and specifically for sorghum and maize breeding experiments, by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and a wheel-based ground platform. Two methods are explored to detect and remove the outliers from the plant datasets. The first is based on surface fitting to noisy point cloud data based on normal and curvature estimation in a local neighborhood. The second utilizes the deep learning framework PointCleanNet. Both methods are applied to individual plants and field-based datasets. To evaluate the method, an F-score and LAI are calculated both before and after outlier removal for both scenarios. Results indicate that the deep learning method for outlier detection is more robust to changes in point densities, level of noise, and shapes. Also, the predicted LAI was improved for the wheel-based vehicle data based on the R2 value and RMSE of residuals. </div><div>The quality of the extracted features depends on the point density and laser penetration of the canopy. Extracting appropriate features is a critical step to have accurate prediction models. Deep learning frameworks are increasingly being used in remote sensing applications. In the last objective of this study, a feature extraction approach is investigated for encoding LiDAR data acquired by UAV platforms multiple times during the growing season over sorghum and maize plant breeding experiments. LAI estimates obtained with these inputs are used to develop support vector regression (SVR) models using plant canopy analyzer data as the ground reference. Results are compared to models based on estimates from physically-based features and evaluated in terms of the coefficient determination (R2). The effects of experimental conditions, including flying height, sensor characteristics, and crop type, are also investigated relative to the estimates of LAI.</div><div><br></div>

Abstract:
In drought-prone arid and semi-arid areas, limited plant available water exerts a tremendous negative effect on crop production, leading to undesirable low crop productivity, untold food insecurity, and never-ending poverty. In-field rainwater harvesting (IRWH or In-field RWH) is specifically designed to trap rainfall within the field and optimise its use to benefit crop yield and quality, and improve water use efficiency (WUE) in these regions. Two RWH-crop field experiments were established in the semi-arid area of the Hatfield Experimental Farm, University of Pretoria, South Africa. The first RWH-potato experiment was conducted during the 2009/2010 growing season while the second RWH-Swiss chard experiment was carried out during the 2010/2011 growing season. Three cropping systems were involved: (1) conventional tillage (CT), (2) tied-ridges (TR), and (3) IRWH with three different design ratios of runoff area to cropping area (1:1, 2:1 & 3:1). The runoff area of each design ratio was either bare (B) or plastic-covered (P) and this resulted in six IRWH treatments. Therefore, there were a total of eight treatments: CT, TR, 1:1B, 1:1P, 2:1B, 2:1P, 3:1B and 3:1P. For both growing seasons, the total plot area yields and WUEs of TR and CT were in general higher than those of the IRWH treatments. This is because TR and CT had more plants per plot than the IRWH treatments and the rainfall recorded for the specific seasons were sufficient, so there was little advantage in collecting/harvesting additional water. In terms of yields and WUEs expressed on the net cropped area, the IRWH treatments had higher yields and WUE than CT and TR because they captured more runoff than the latter treatments. Field trials are expensive, laborious and time consuming, therefore models were developed to predict potential runoff and crop growth and yield of different RWH techniques or design ratios. During the current investigation, runoff models such as the linear regression, curve number (CN) and Morin and Cluff (1980) models were used to describe and simulate runoff generation from this ecotope. The empirical rainfall-runoff linear regression model indicated that runoff efficiency declined as runoff length increased. The statistics revealed that the CN and Morin and Cluff (1980) models simulated runoff very well. Moreover, the use of a generic crop growth Soil Water Balance model (SWB) showed potential to simulate crop growth and yield for different RWH techniques and design ratios. During the present study, the SWB model was modified by incorporating linear runoff simulation models in order to predict the soil water balance and crop yield under different RWH design scenarios. Field data collected on the study ecotope contributed to the parameterization and calibration of the SWB model for the crops involved. The SWB model was in general, successfully calibrated for the potato crop, while the calibration for the Swiss chard crop was generally not as successful, most probably because of the continuous growing and harvesting system followed (approach for pastures). The scenario simulation results for potato suggested that for the study ecotope, if land is limiting, CT, TR and smaller design ratios (1:1) are the best options in terms of yield per total plot area. However, if land is not limiting, larger design ratios (2:1 and 3:1) are better options, according to the yields per net cropped area outcomes. The SWB model shows promise as a useful tool to assist in the selection of the best RWH strategy and the ideal planting date under specific conditions with minimal input requirements. However, there is a need to upgrade it to a 2D SWB model for better accuracy under a range of conditions.<br>Dissertation (MScAgric)--University of Pretoria, 2014.<br>lk2014<br>Plant Production and Soil Science<br>MScAgric<br>Unrestricted

Abstract:
[EN] Water scarcity is becoming a critical problem in arid and semi-arid areas of the world, where part of the production of the main horticultural crops is located, as is the case of the Mediterranean area. Drought is one of the main limiting factors in agriculture and it is seriously affecting the production of horticultural crops. The improvement of water productivity in agriculture in general, and in horticulture in particular, can be achieved through the use of certain strategies. Deficit irrigation consists of the supply of water below the irrigation water requirements (IWR), so that there is a reduction in evapotranspiration. It can be done continuously (CDI) or regulated (RDI). With deficit irrigation, the irrigation water use efficiency can be improved, maintaining yield, and it could even lead to an improvement in the quality of the harvest. This study, carried out at the Cajamar in Paiporta Experimental Center (Valencia, Spain), analyzes the effect of deficit irrigation on four of the main cultivated horticultural crops, open field cultivated in the Mediterranean area: two of autumnal-winter crops (cauliflower and onion) and two spring-summer crops (pepper and watermelon). In the evaluation, the following parameters have been analyzed: plant growth and water status, yield, irrigation water use efficiency, quality of production and crop profitability. In the first season the CDI was tested, which allowed to establish the different growth stages for each crop, which were used in the following season for the RDI. In the four crops, the control plants (100% IWR) have shown an adequate water status, in terms of both relative water content and membrane stability index, while those subjected to a severe CDI, have shown the lowest values of both indexes. The negative effect of deficit irrigation on yield has been less important in autumn-winter crops than in spring-summer crops, especially in cauliflower. The CDI at 50% IWR has drastically reduced the marketable yield and, consequently, the gross revenue, although it has supposed an improvement in the irrigation water use efficiency for the autumn-winter crops. From the individual analysis of the crops, it can be stated that cauliflower yield obtained with CDI at 75% IWR or RDI at 50% IWR during the juvenile phase, has remained at levels similar to the control, improving the irrigation water use efficiency. In relation to onion, in case of severe water restriction, it would be advisable to apply CDI with 75% IWR or RDI at 50% IWR during bulb ripening, since these strategies have slightly decreased yield, improving the irrigation water use efficiency. In less restrictive conditions, RDI at 75% IWR during the bulb maturation has led to a satisfactory yield, with an increase in the irrigation water use efficiency. In Italian sweet pepper, the application of RDI to 75% IWR during the harvesting has resulted in a considerable reduction of the yield, and therefore, of the gross income, although with important water savings and increasing the fruit soluble solids and phenolic compounds content. By shortening the cultivation cycle until the beginning of September, when most of the marketable yield has already been harvested, significant water savings would be achieved, and the land could be used in other crops. CDI at 75% IWR and 50% IWR, or RDI at 50% IWR at harvesting have resulted in a high incidence of fruit affected by blossom-end rot. In watermelon the RDI application can be recommended, both 75% and 50% IWR, during the fruit ripening, since it has led to acceptable marketable yields. In general terms, it can be affirmed that the application of CDI and RDI in the four crops has not significantly affected the product quality, in terms of the analyzed parameters.<br>My grateful thanks to the Cultural Affairs and Mission Sector, Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education for supporting me with a scholarship.<br>Abdelkhalik, AGA. However, the information of agricultural land use and the coverage information is very insufficient, consequently it can not grasp distribution of fully the field crop growth. The study took the Yunlin Irrigation Association-Huwei Irrigation Area as the subject area. Using the scale 1/5000 color orthophoto image map’s RGB Channel Red and the geographic information systems (GIS) to interpret the subject area crops image artificially, the researcher can estimate and control the amount of the Crops water effectively. In addition, the techniques can be used to overcome obstacles from space and human interference in the field works, and also to estimate the amount of water in non-irrigated areas in order to provide water resource allocation effectively. The findings of the study are that the color orthophoto image map’s RGB Channel Red artificial interpretation techniques are valuable for Yunlin Irrigation Association survey of large area crop fields; therefore this techniques can be applied to investigate the same degree of development paddy field and upland and estimate the amount of the Crops water.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中興大學<br>應用經濟學研究所<br>91<br>Abstract Drought is an important factor which temporarily causes water shortage in Taiwan. In order to mitigate the impact of drought, the government used to allocating water resource by moving out water from agricultural uses through administrative process, rather than by water market. However, the way of water reallocation through bureaucratic process is less efficient while compare to water market, and the compensation process can’t encourage the farmers to move out water voluntarily. For that reason, this study will discuss the potential problems of current water transfer and compensation, and applied “Farm Crop Budget Analysis” to estimate the values of water for the first and second rice crops in Hsin-Chu area. Finally, this study will further evaluate the losses caused by water transfer, then discuss the rational compensation standard by the case of 2002. The main results were summarized as fallow: 1.In the cases of water transfer and compensation in 2002 and 2003, as a result of the compensation costs were mainly borne by the government, rather than by the final users, “the user pay principle” still can’t be well implemented. Besides, the setting of compensation price didn’t involve the “user costs”, and the level of price merely attain to the basic guarantee in law, hence the compensation price may provide less incentives to promote conservation and voluntary water transfer. 2.The empirical results show that the average values of water in Hsin-Chu area during 1997~2003 were NT$ 1.23 and NT$ 0.80 per ton for the first and second rice crops respectively. It also represents the potential benefit loss while a ton of agricultural water was moved out. 3.In the case of water transfer in 2002, we can find that the losses caused by water transfer will be lower while it occurs before cultivation, and the amount of water which can be moved out will be reduced rapidly while cultivation has proceeded. Besides, the compensation level which should be paid for a unit of water before cultivation is NT$ 4.28 per ton; while after cultivation the compensation levels were as follow:the germination period (NT$ 6.74 per ton)、the tillering period (NT$10.72 per ton)、the time before heading (NT$ 20.75 per ton)、the time after heading(NT$ 29.13 per ton)、and the ripening period (NT$ 97.39 per ton). However, these results only represent the basic compensation of losses, and the rational price of compensation should be decided by negotiation which is based on benefit losses between the sellers and buyers.
