Full textMany studies show a general tendency in specialist species, i. E. Which have a narrow ecological niche, to suffer from global changes. Thus, the first results of my doctoral thesis show that specialist and generalist species of birds respond differently to space and time changes, this phenomenon contributes to the functional biotic homogenization. I wanted to understand why specialist and generalist species presented different responses to global changes. I used the complementary approaches of evolutionary and behavioural ecology, applied to levels going from the community to the individual. Thanks to experimental studies in natural and controlled environments, we compared behaviours that potentially play a role in the susceptibility of specialist species to global changes. My results show that generalist and specialist species differ about the knowledge of their neighbouring environment, their temerity to go near to a source of food, their level of activity and their rapidity of exploration. We also found that only the specialist species present a behavioral syndrome (i. E. , correlation between individual behaviours) that suggests a restricted behavioral plasticity. Moreover, we found that spatial generalist species (habitat) are also temporal generalist (phenology). By a phylogenetic analysis we show that the characteristics of the life cycle such as fecundity and age at maturity seem to be architectural constraints, whereas the dispersion ability seems to be correlated to species specialization. To complement all these results, we carried out a synthesis work summarizing the theoretical aspects and applied to functional biotic homogenization

Full textEducation is an investment that has its return on the labor market. However, frictions at work in this market affect both the level and the nature of educational investments. At the same time, the skills gained during schooling time determine the design of labor market institutions. This thesis is made of three chapters examining, each of them examines a particular issue. The first one presents a mismatch model on labor market where the efficiency of the assignment mechanism is endogenous: it depends on educational efforts (which reduce the mismatch) and on technological investments (which increases it). We examine the impact of uncertainty regarding the future work associate, of the worker's heterogeneity toward scholastic ability, and of risk aversion. In the second one we build a two-sector matching model with generalists and specialists, in which the proportion of specialists is endogenous. The nature of human capital determines the number of job queues in which worker can candidates as well as its rank in each of them. Self-selection in education type leads to three main externalities: specialists enhance job creation in each sector; generalists improve the efficiency of the matching technology, but nevertheless exacerbate firm's coordination problems. We calibrate the model on aggregate data for 20 OECD countries. Self-selection is always inefficient: taxing vocational education, to reduce the proportion of specialists down the efficient level, could reduce unemployment rates by more than one point of percentage. The third one studies the unemployment insurance scheme in a context where workers have different kind of human capital. We show that, depending on the scenario chosen for the management of the insurance fund, the proportion of individuals with specific human capital can lead either to a decrease or to an increase of the replacement rate of the optimal unemployment benefit

Ivanova, Olga. "Essays on the Role of Functional Diversity in Managerial Careers." Thesis, Jouy-en Josas, HEC, 2022. http://www.theses.fr/2022EHEC0005.
Full textClassic literature in labor economics and economic sociology has documented how managerial careers are shaped by internal labor markets and organizational division of labor. Yet the last three decades have been marked by a dramatic increase in external hiring, proliferation of new forms of employment, and the emergence of career histories that span multiple employers, industries, and occupations. This means that our understanding of intra- and inter-firm mobility of managerial workers in modern labor markets might be incomplete. In my dissertation, I explore how managers move between jobs and assignments, how organizations make their choices in filling vacant positions, and how market intermediaries shape talent flows and individual careers. I focus on functional (occupational) dimension of managerial experience. I aim at demonstrating how experience in many vs. one (or few) functions influences career outcomes for middle managers in internal and external labor markets. I concentrate on two mechanisms by which spanning functional boundaries might shape one’s subsequent mobility: (1) skills acquisition and transferability and (2) career history as a signaling device. My work speaks to the interdisciplinary research on careers and labor mobility. It extends our understanding of managerial career dynamics in modern labor markets and provides new insights for the studies of career specialization

Full textHerbivory is thought to depend on intrinsic plant resistance traits and negatively affect survival and growth of plants. Predators can depress herbivore populations and thereby indirectly limit the consumption of primary producers. The surrounding vegetation is also expected to modify the interactions between a focal plant, its herbivores and their natural enemies. The surrounding vegetation may disrupt the colonisation and the consumption of a focal plant by insect herbivores, providing associational resistance. Increasing diversity of neighbouring vegetation can decrease resource availability or enhance herbivores control by predators. By contrast, associational susceptibility may occur with higher levels of herbivory in a focal plant in more diverse plant communities. We tested 1) the effect of the neighbouring vegetation on the levels of herbivory on seedlings, 2) the indirect impact of predators on herbivores and subsequent herbivory, and 3) the interactions between surrounding vegetation, focal plants, herbivores and predators. We examined the damage caused by insect herbivores on three native broadleaved species. We then compared the importance of taxonomic similarity between seedlings and canopy tree species and the structure and composition of surrounding vegetation at both large- and small-scales. Birds are vertebrate predators likely to limit damage to plants and facilitate plant growth by consuming herbivorous insects. We estimated their effects by excluding them from focal plants, and compared their interactive effects with vegetation diversity or removal. The effects of surrounding vegetation and avian predation were also disentangled on concealed- vs. external-feeding guilds (predation sensitivity) and specialist- vs. generalist-insects.Surrounding vegetation of focal seedlings influences the abundance of insect herbivores and damage. Specialist insects (leaf miners) are affected by the understorey vegetation close to oak seedlings, decreasing with its presence or structural diversity. The damage caused by generalist insects depend on the large-scale composition of plant communities, and increase with tree species richness and cover or on conspecific forest habitats. Exclusion of insectivorous birds affects insect herbivory in a species-specific manner, and also greatly varies with forest habitats and presence of vegetation around focal plants. The indirect effect of bird predation on leaf damage is observed on seedlings beneath noncongeneric canopy trees. The removal of local surrounding vegetation affects the top-down effect of insectivorous birds on insect herbivores, according to their sensitivity to predation and the accessibility of preys. To conclude, our studies provide experimental evidences of interactive effects between bird predation and neighbouring vegetation on insect herbivores and levels of herbivory. These indirect effects are strongly related to the specialisation of herbivores and to their sensitivity to bird predation

Full textAt primary school, general teachers and specialized teachers belong to separate social groups with their own social representations of the notions of pupil in care and learning disability. Their actions, that everyone wishes to be complementary, towards pupils in difficulties aim at quelling or better, at having this difficulty disappear before it gets settled down in the long run. But their practical experience, depending on their social representation, gives rise to clashes that hinder any collaboration and make the pupil fragilized. The present survey shows specialized teachers emphasize their occupational specialization and do not meet general teachers’ every expectation. They "pick and choose" the pupils they regard as their concern. The others are put aside by both teachers. It is hereby demonstrated the reduction of tensions between the teachers turn the care really efficient. It shall be important the evolution prospects take this reality into account
