Full textIn this work, we are interested in reflection optical spectroscopy of diluted cesium vapor infiltrated in Langmuir-Blodgett artificial opals. After a microscopic study of the structure of opals, we report experiments of reflection, transmission and diffraction (without atoms) carried out on various opals, with the aim of exploring the propagation of the light field in these media. By carrying out selective reflection experiments, we observe that for a TM polarization the atomic signal vanishes at 45° and the Brewster angle, and between these two zeros the sign of the signal is reversed. This effect was predicted theoretically but had never been observed. We also report the experiments of reflection spectroscopy of a vapor infiltrated in various opals and for different wavelengths. On multi-layered opals, we observe sub-Doppler spectra in oblique incidence, the shape of wich in sensitive to incidence, polarization and wavelength. These spectra were interpreted as a signature of a three-dimensional confinement. Experiments on a multi-zone opal show that on a monolayer opal, we also observe a sub-Doppler signal where there is no three-dimensional confinement

Full textThis thesis presents the study of coherent light interaction with a sub-wavelength atomic alkali vapor layer confined in a nano-cell and applications for the formation of narrow optical resonances. We develop a theoretical model describing the resonant interaction of the laser light with the thin alkali vapor layer in the presence of an external static magnetic field. We show that due to a transient regime of interaction, only slow atoms contribute to the signal and their transmission spectrum is essentially Doppler-free. The nature of the obtained spectra makes the transmission spectroscopy from a nano-cell a convenient technique to perform studies of closely-spaced atomic transitions and investigate their behavior in magnetic fields. Experimental realizations for magnetic field up to 7000~G show an excellent agreement between theory and experiment. We also explore the Faraday rotation of the plane polarization of light with the propagation through the thin atomic slab. We see that despite a small angle of rotation, Faraday rotation spectra exhibit resonances narrower than that for transmission. At last, we investigate new possibilities to form narrow optical resonances in nano-cells and show that second derivation processing of transmission spectra yields the strongest line narrowing among all methods studied in this thesis

Full textThis thesis brings theoretical results on spectroscopy of hydrogen and gives some applications to tokamak edge plasmas. Miscellaneous line broadening models are developed and applied in three ways: diagnostic of plasma parameters, diagnostic of turbulent fluctuations of the plasma, and opacity studies. A review is first made (Chap. 1) on physical mechanisms which contribute to line broadening, such as for example motion of the emitters (Doppler effect) or electric field of the plasma (Stark effect). An analytical model is developed (Chap. 2) for opacity of Lyman a line (transition 2 → 1); this model, which takes into account Doppler effect, Zeeman effect, Stark effect and fine structure, has been incorporated into a transport code for studies of radiative transfer in ITER edge plasma. A refinement of Stark broadening description is next made (Chap. 3), in order to take into account quadratic Stark effect induced by the Zeeman degeneracy removal of atomic levels. The model is validated by a numerical simulation method. Finally, a study is presented (Chap. 4) on line broadening in presence of turbulence. It is shown how a line profile is related to the probability density function (PDF) of fluid fields; an application of formalism is then made to describe Doppler broadening of Da line (transition 3 → 2 of deuterium) and Stark broadening of D10 line (transition 10 → 2). Consequences for diagnostic interpretation are discussed

Full textThis PhD thesis deals with the application of recent high resolution spectroscopic methods that are either selective or ultrasensitive. Spectroscopic parameters of stable and transient molecular species, difficult to reach otherwise, are determined. First, selective Fourier transform spectroscopy is used to characterize TiCl4/He and N2O/He plasmas. The spectrum of the whole emission of a plasma and spectra, which select a given class of molecules (for instance short-lived or ions) are simultaneously recorded. In particular, the rovibronic transition X - C of the 48Ti35Cl radical is observed around 3 µm. Its analysis has shown a very weak perturbation, which affects the C 4D1/2 state. Moreover, selective spectra of a N2O/He plasma, expected to only retain the ion lines, have revealed NO rovibronic transitions between the A, C, D and E Rydberg states. Under specific experimental conditions, a Doppler shift of the NO transitions, similar to the one of a positive ion, is observed. An interpretation of this unexpected phenomenon, highlighted for the first time for a neutral molecule, is proposed. Second, spectra with absorption lengths of several tens kilometers are recorded by coupling intracavity laser absorption spectroscopy (ICLAS) and time-resolved Fourier transform spectroscopy (TRFTS). Two different experiments have make it possible to probe, with high sensitivity, relatively wide infrared spectral ranges. Around 2. 5 µm, lots of weak intensity rovibrational transitions of the atmospherically relevant molecule N2O are identified and analysed. Unstable species created in a N2/He plasma are also detected for the first time around 1. 05 µm

Full textWith the improvement of the detection techniques of exoplanets, we are able to probe populations of ever smaller objects. But if several hundreds of these small planets have been discovered, their detection and especially their precise characterization is still a challenge. Because of the lack of observatio- nal constrains, this population remains poorly known. My thesis focused on the detection in radial velocity of low mass planets with the SOPHIE spectrograph in preparation of the CHEOPS mission. I first analyzed, interpreted and corrected the instrumental systematics of SOPHIE which lead to an improvement in precision down to the 2 m/s level. Thanks to this work, I uncovered the planetary nature of HD 164595 b, a Neptune-like planet on a circular 40 days orbit around a solar twin. I also computed the detection limits and established an assessment of the high precision program on SOPHIE after 5 years of observations and more than 3000 measurements. The CHEOPS satellite will be dedicated to the search of transits of small planets already detected in radial velocities around bright stars. In order to prepare its observing program, I built a list of targets from radial velocity surveys. CHEOPS, with its high precision photometry, will then be able to to measure very accurately their radius and constrain their density. This program could lead to the identification of 3 to 9 new low mass transiting planets.I also studied the statistical properties of this low-mass planets population. Based on the hundred of planets that are well characterized in this mass regime, I uncovered a link between the maximal mass of these planets and the metallicity of their host-stars

Full textThis thesis reported on atomic spectroscopy for the development of alkaline atomic vapor photonic microcell (PMC). The work is motivated by reproducing the outstanding laboratory environment based performances achieved in the fields of frequency standard and coherent optics in highly compact and stand-alone devices that can be accessible to a wider scientific community or to a commercial market. In our case these future devices will be based a Hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) filled with a gas phase material to form a PMC, and outstands with an ultra-long long interaction length and micrometric modal area. However, the micrometric scale of the fiber core harboring the atoms raises several technical and scientific challenges. Among the technical challenges, we list the development of efficient process for atom loading inside long hollow fiber with small core diameter, the suppression or mitigation of physio-chemical reactivity of the atoms (i.e. Rubidium) with the fiber core inner-surface silica etc. In parallel, the large surface-to-volume ratio of the fiber-core raises questions like the coherence relaxation dynamics and the nature and effect of the atom-surface interaction. The thesis reports on fiber-core inner surface coating with different materials to mitigate the physio-chemical reactions of the confined atoms with the surface, on tapering large core inhibited coupling Kagome HC-PCF, and splicing technique that ensures low splice loss and no atomic reactivity during the splicing process. In parallel, the thesis reports on a set of spectroscopy experiments to assess the relaxation dynamics of atoms inside HC-PCF and to report on novel sub-Doppler transparencies

Full textPlasma turbulence is nowadays believed to be responsible for the anomalous transport and consequently the degradation of discharge conditions in magnetic confined fusion devices, such as tokamaks. Since a good energy confinement time is crucial for achieving a positive energy yield, understanding and control of turbulent processes is currently one of the major goals of the Magnetic Confinement Fusion research. To study the plasma turbulence, experimental tools that are able to provide information about its characteristics are necessary. Such tools include microwave diagnostics and, in particular, Doppler reflectometry and radial correlation Doppler reflectometry. While these non-invasive diagnostics benefit from the simplicity of the setup, there are a number of unresolved issues when it comes to the interpretation of the experimental data. Issues such are small-angle scattering and plasma curvature effects limit the range of applicability of the simple interpretation of the measurements, while nonlinear scattering effects make it inapplicable altogether. These problems make it necessary to validate the interpretation of experimental data. Thus, the primary goal of this thesis was to create a synthetic Doppler reflectometry and radial correlation Doppler reflectometry diagnostic for the interpretation of the FT-2 tokamak experimental results. This goal is achieved by applying full-wave IPF-FD3D code to the results of gyrokinetic plasma modelling with ELMFIRE code to obtain the synthetic signals, which are then benchmarked with experimental measurements. The synthetic diagnostic is also used for a more general study of the possibility of nonlinear effects influencing the experimental measurements. Finally, the secondary goal of this thesis was to perform an analytical research of plasma curvature effects, nonlinear scattering and a novel technique for turbulence structures’ characterization. The first principles analytical study was performed by considering the Helmholtz equation and obtaining an analytical expression for the experimental signals. The results for the latter two topics were numerically validated with the partial use of specially developed linear numerical model and the full-wave IPF-FD3D code

Full textMagnetic confinement fusion is a promising candidate for a future energy source. Its efficiency is limited by particle and heat transport due to plasma turbulence. A thorough understanding of the turbulence and turbulence moderation mechanisms, is therefore needed. The geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) is a radially localised plasma flow oscillation which contributes to the reduction of turbulent transport through velocity shearing. This thesis investigates the fundamental behaviour of the GAM through a systematic experimental study of its properties in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. In particular, the role of the plasma geometry on the scaling of the GAM frequency and amplitude, as well as the GAM radial structure are investigated in detail. The experimental data was obtained with the aid of the microwave Doppler reflectometry diagnostic. The GAM frequency scaling is compared with multiple models which reproduce the expected fundamental scaling behaviour, but do not give a satisfyingly accurate prediction. The GAM amplitude is studied in connection with damping rates predicted by models for collisional and collisionless Landau damping processes. It is found that finite orbit width effects need to be considered and that collisional damping effects cannot be neglected. In studying the GAM radial structure, three distinct states are identified for different plasma conditions. Transitions between these states are observed under variations of the plasma geometry

Full textThe present study is concerned with the experimental analysis of an axisymmetric water jet (Re ≈10 [to the power] 4), free or slightly excited. The velocity measurements are realised with laser anemometer and/or hot film anemometer. In a first approaches, the study of the fields of average and fluctuation velocities allows the observation of a behaviour already met in literature. Our contribution is concerned with the supply of additional information regarding the formation and development of periodic structure by means of an exhaustive spectral and space-time analysis. Through spectral analysis of the fluctuations of longitudinal and radial velocities, it cornes forward sorne preferential radial distances which are distinct for each component. However, it seems that just at the outlet of the nozzle there is generation of two periodic structures, with characteristics related to the boundary layer thickness for the first, and to the jet diameter for the second. We note that pairing phenomena regards only the lastly designed structure. A slight pulsation of the jet, does not alter significantly the global behaviour of its development. However, in this case we observe only the generation of structures related to the pulsation frequency and to their successive pairing. Since this last phenomenon has the same characteristics as the one recorded for a free jet, the space-time analysis allows the tracking of the development of the structures and the proposition of a mechanism describing their origin development
